Nexus Q as Sonos Connect:Amp alternative? - Nexus Q Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone come up with a way of leveraging their Q as a Sonos Connect:Amp alternative? It seems to me the hardware would be ideal. I am no developer, but it sure would be nice to be able to use this hardware for something other than a dust collector.

Play as remote

I have a xoom and I run fpse and n64oid on it and I hate the on screen keyboard so I was wondering is there a way to use my phone as a remote for those emulators on my tablet?

That would be cool. I have an Ipad 2 that connects to the TV so it would be as if the Ipad was a bunch of consoles.
actually i was thinking in some identical direction, everyone knows splashtop or crazyremote i guess. it allowes u to cloud/stream, with minimal lag, ur pc-games to an android device. just a little question, i know this may need some custom rom. but is there a chance ( also in a technical way, especially when a new kernel/rom (sorry im not a dev ^^") is out)that someone could make a prog like splashtop ( minimal lag cloud/stream remote client) with the use of the xperia play buttons as a controller in windows through wifi? i guess this could be an answer to all our dreams, having a strong cloud computer, rendering all our beloved games Just dreaming , i know, cause i can imagine how much work this will need, but playing with balls of steel (;D), i know every other phoneuser would get jealous.
I love using Splashtop on my Ipad. It is one of my Fav apps. That and Air Vid.
The Air Vid dev said he won’t make an android version because:
It's been mentioned here many times, unless Android gets solid live http streaming protocol support the Air Video port is very unlikely.

I don't develop in android yet so I don't know how true it is.

Airplay

Something pretty cool that apple will implement into ios 5

I hope this gets picked up by Google and devs, as it looks really cool.
Try going to the website in this post... it will not let me post the link, sorry.

I have not tried this, but it appears to do the same thing.
There is also another app called Skifta that is DLNA certified as a streaming app.

It says it has been around since 2009... Apple isn't all that innovative after all, only very good at marketing.

Horrible at marketing, not very good.
From the tv ads I tought it was their renaming of DLNA (laaaaame), but this is incredibly cool and completely different! Aside from that the PS3 had DLNA support in 2007 already, so it's even older even if I'm not sure how much.
DLNA offers you to stream multimedia files (video, pictures, music) to a compatible reciever, but that's all. You wouldn't be able to watch video from an app like Hulu and so on, just files you have on your device. Also, nothing like seeing on a tv (passing through a special device like Apple TV, true) the game/app you are using at the moment, if it was just DLNA. It's closer to a wireless HDMI transmitter/reciever, but it costs way less than that!
Airplay has been around for a while. It is similar to UPNP/DNLA.
Anyway, Airplay is an RTSP variant with DRM. It's been reverse engineered, and there is an a freeware C lib for it. The biggest advantage to Airplay is that it probably had tighter standards. UPNP allows pretty much anything, which means you end up with a lot of cross device format compatibility issues.
I haven't seen a lot of really good uses for either. DNLA is kind of fun to DJ with and maybe should pictures/videos from your phone. I think a really cool app would be to take the SD card from my camera and send the pictures to a TV. You can kind of do this, but I haven't seen anything real slick.
If you have a device that supports AirPlay/DNLA, it likely that it can already do whatever you need to through that device and use your phone/tablet as a remote (This is how I use my Onkyo TX-NR509). The problem is that both protocols rely on a wireless network, which is susceptible to drop outs.
FYI: You should check out iMediaShare. It's pretty impressive (I'm not sure it works on Transformer, it's really geared more toward phones).
How about a cheaper, more efficient, more universal solution transformer owners can already utilize: HDMI mirroring...
WiDi (if it ever becomes standardized) will then blow airplay/DLNA out of the water anyways and only requires a firmware update in existing WiFi modules.

Android controlled tractor?

Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but I'm looking for some ideas or links for a project. My father makes scale model working tractors as a hobby. We have talked for years about making them remote controlled, and he has an upcoming one I'd like to try it on.
I would like to make something he can control with an android tablet. (Asus transformer) I'm looking for something blue tooth or wifi that could work output to some servos or relays. Thinking of using a car Window motor for steering and a servo or switch that could run a hydrostatic transmission. I found some how to articles but they are mainly geared towards rc cars and seem quite complicated. I'm hoping this could be done for cheap, not looking for anything too fancy like cameras or sensors.
What do you guys think?

Needs some hardware hacking, but that's why you're here right? Up/down to get you forward/backward and left/right. There's an Android app to control these kinds of camera's. You said no camera's, but that was because of the budget right? $45 is a steal if you ask me...
And don't forget to make a tutorial on how you did it, so we all can build one!
Edit: cheaper but no camera and no web interface: http://dx.com/p/android-remote-cont...-139551?Utm_rid=88474882&Utm_source=affiliate

I recomment you to use a arduino (like arduino uno) http://www.arduino.cc/
you could buy an bluetooth of wifi shield to connect to your tablet.
and a motor shield of relay shield to control some lights and motors.
i hope this will help you!

This is not an application only Python script, but you can use this software with low-cost radio-controlled toy board . Simple and cheap.

That blog should walk you through setting up the comms, up to you whether the tractor will be dumb or intelligent (avoid crashes etc).

Porting Chromecast to Nexus Q?

So, we've been told that Chromecast uses some of the underlying components of a Google TV build, and is hence, a piecemeal portion of Android. Would it be possible to turn a Nexus Q into a Chromecast?
I'm with you
I am with you on this. Chromecast looks so similar to what the Q was doing. I'm hoping the OS could be ported to the Q. I have two Nexus Q devices that I would love to continue to use. (I build speakers, so they're prefect with the built in AMP.)
:good::good:
Really hoping this will be possible.

Ouya Controller + nVidia Shield Tablet

I own Ouya controller and nVidia Shield Tablet but Ouya controller seems to have wrong keymaps, when I launch Portal or Half Life 2 character tends to spin around due to wrong keymaps, is there a correct keymap definitions for Ouya controller to make it work with stock android? I have root access on Shield Tablet.
I've searched forums for it but couldn't find anything relevant to my case.
Thanks.
I've found my answer in that thread;

I'm leaving the thread as it is for future reference.
(PS: Don't forget to change extension to ".kl" before copying it to system/usr/keylayout)
What do you think of the shield? Thinking of getting one
One of the best tablets I've ever used. It is fast, fluid, powerful and definitely feels like a premium device. I would personally recommend this device to anyone looking for a good tablet worth it's price.
