A few questions about the phone - Moto G4 Play Questions & Answers

Hi,
My questions are:
1 - Does any variant of the phone have NFC?
2 - I read that some people have issues with their GPS? Is that a manufacturing defect and only present in random units?
3 - Does anybody know how to reflash stock ROM for harpia? Because somebody might want to reflash stock ROM for some reason (not restore from TWRP backup), but wouldn't know how. I don't own the phone yet, but I am planning on buying it, so a guide would be useful to be made if somebody knows how to do it and is willing to make one as a seperate thread
Thanks in advance!

if you looking to buy, please wait for g5 play.

Why though? I think the G4 play is a great phone, not gonna use it for things like heavy gaming after all.

Why? What differences will there be?

screen will be 1080p
sd 430 chip
releases with nougat ( may get android O support)
will come with updated gps

I can quick whip up a guide soon on how to restore to the stock rom, I've done it several times before. Also, one perk to potentially waiting for the G5 to be released is it might drop the price of the G4 Play a small bit making it a better deal. Also most light casual gaming is very smooth, things such as Alto's Adventure, Dots, etc. I personally recommend it, mainly due to seeing how development is starting to pick up nicely (big thanks to all the debs too). Heck, the 2013 Falcon model of the Moto G is still getting a decent bit of Nougat roms, and it launched with Jellybean on it when I owned one

That's great! :good:
About the price dropping of G4, that doesn't really bother me, because I just want to buy the phone ASAP to stop using my old replacement phone! I also like the fact that the phone has official Lineage ROM status
I've watched some videos of gaming on the phone and the frame rates look high enough! :good:
Do you have any information about the GPS problem some people are complaining about? Do you have any personal experience with it?

Just got the guide completed, here's the link for anyone who wants it. Make sure you don't get the Amazon or Verizon variant because currently I don't think there are any methods of unlocking the bootloader right now. I don't have an problems with my GPS signal, it seems there must just be the occasional bad unit.

A lot of phones are shipping with GLONASS disabled on the GPS chip. That's why the GPS sucks outright. This is Lenovo's problem and they themselves have no idea how to fix it. So far, I've only heard of a Moto G5 and G5 Plus (no play edition), but if Lenovo makes the same mistake, they'll run the entire product line into the ground.

Thank you so much for this. I really haven't been hesitant in the past but with this phone I'm a bit worried to dive right in.. This should definitely help out.

Yes now I think I have got a bad unit. 15 days are over and now I know Amazon will refuse to replace. Though I would go for replacement of the gps device. I am facing some serious problems with it.

users of the vk810 are currently prepared to fork over $135+ to the Developer that produces a working L build, doesn't have to be 100%, but it needs to have the basics; data, GPS, wifi, etc... Any takers?

I'd be willing to donate as well. Getting the tablet free. Should be here tomorrow.

All of those things should be covered with the $100, we'll just say that we have the bounty set to $110 or so. Anyone want to put on top? Lets get in touch with a developer to get this rolling!

we have a semi-working CM11 devicetree/kernel ported from the non-LTE model (LTE data/GPS doesn't work, everything else seems to work)
I'm still trying to understand more about kernel development/porting, just not much time to look at it...

Why do you want Android 5.0 so bad to the point you want to pay money? I'm mean specifically, what in it is such a big deal that you need it NOW?
Why not just go buy a Google Play Edition if you want Lolipop that bad?
There's more to life than obsessing over having the lastest O/S version
Well a bounty is less than a gpe tablet lol. So there's that.

users of this great, underestimated beast of a tablet, that for some reason LG dumped some unoptimized garbage on to it, then "replaced" it with tablets with WORSE hardware, are really missing out on what this tablet can do. What it needs is a build that will run perfectly on it. Furthermore if it works half as good as it should, it would be better than what LG is currently doing with it.
Lets get a dev to get 4.4 working with radios, and we'll go from there. We may have to wait for a dev to pick up this device, with that; I am also willing to allow the dev my device as a start.
I'll add 50 to it
I would just like to see CM11 or CM12.. The tablet would run so much better.
It's starting to look like a significant amount of people are buying this tablet with the recent promotions by Verizon. I really hope that a dev can pick this up and see if they can get us a working ROM. I'm in the process of prepping a server to do some of my own ROM builds for the LG G3. Wish we had a working base because I don't have the knowledge to do anything but compile the builds.
Even a custom kernel would be nice so we could boost the CPU back to the 1.7 that the other models run at.
I'll kick in $20 for this. Would be nice to be cm12 or even GPE rom with working data (or not at this point).
I just got this tablet from verizon about 2 weeks ago, I dont consider myself a dev in any shape or form but I have done enough to know what can break my device and what cant, a while back I successfully ported a rom to a cheap Chinese tablet I owned a while back, I am going to look into porting a (hopefully) lollipop rom to our VK810, gonna take me some time and who knows if I will even be successful, just wanted to let everyone know someone is trying..... I will let you know if I make any progress....
Prepare your bounties guys !
Development is in full swing. We'd see some love for developers in coming weeks !

And They Wonder Why G4 Sales Suck...

LG says no plans for G4 Android 5.1.1 update at the moment
Are we going directly to Android M? When I had my G3 we had the same issue, no 5.1.1
Given all of the issues with Lollipop, this may be a blessing in disguise but
the negative publicity from this may further impact the already poor sales.
Actually
I am eager to buy a new phone. I do have the cash. I do not like Touchwiz, and no SD Card is a no go. So no S6.
The Nexus 6 is way to big and no SD Card. HTC M9... oh well.
So, the LG G4 is the only option. Why am I not holding this phone in my hands?
It is available for nearly a month now (give or take depending where you live) and no root method available, without LGs unlock code. ....No bootloader unlock. No XPOSED because of that, and no CM Mod or anything even possible because of that.
Coming from a Nexus which I love (despite the camera, the battery, the missing SD Card and the terrible GPS) I am not willing to buy a piece of expensive phone which is not mine.
So maybe, just maybe that is a reason why sales are not that great...
There are other reasons I am fully aware, but this is the deal breaker for me...
By the way: I visit here daily. I can not really tell where we are in terms of a unlocked bootloader and easy root method? Anyone here that could sum it up?

We are no where unless someone's keeping it hush hush. I check daily too.
The xda and tweak people are just s handfull of users ... Most buyers are regular and they don't even know xda .... If you want a phone that get every update then buy a Google phone, or a iphone. If you want a unlocked bootloader now then buy a Samsung. If you don't want those phones , then stop whining and buy a G4 or any other phone with Android on it instead of complaining. Sales are not depending on if a bootloader is unlocked or not !

Why is it essential for you to have an unlocked bootloader and root? I don't understand why its a dealbreaker - obviously you buy a phone based on its spec and features and no phone comes with 'unlocked bootloader' and 'root' as features.
XPosed is a heaving pile of **** which is buggy and unstable even at the best of times and if you start installing custom ROM's you start losing features.
I and plenty others bought this phone as it meets what we were looking at at the time. Root would be a bonus, but even then two weeks in I still can't think of anything I need root or a custom ROM for...

GravityBox is a HUGE one. It controls the look and behavior of everything on your phone.
Downloads2SD for remapping hardcoded folders like Downloads from internal storage to the SD card.
DisableFlagSecure for taking screenshots in apps that forbid it.
XHangouts for configuring image quality and other things in Hangouts.
NotifyClean for suppressing annoying system notifications that cannot normally be disabled.
The list can go on, I'm sure others use a lot more than this.
I am also missing a few features that I can only use with root. AdAway, AirAudio to stream my sound to other devices, etc...

Everyones usage is different remember - I just want to use a phone and from previous experience with my S4 introducing xposed to it turned it into a buggy mess, I don't want that happening to this phone.

99% agree with you there. I got this device for the ability it has without any root/unlock. Fully agree that Xposed has never done anything good for me in my experiences...usually end up having bugs and ending up factory resetting rom I'm on.
Also confused as to why people expect that the G4 would already be unlocked or rooted. This device has been out for just over 3 weeks, fellas. Sure, there are other manufacturers (HTC which I LOVE save for their inability to understand that a good camera is a requirement in 2015) that are able to be unlocked like 30 seconds after you open the box. LG is NOT that way. The G3 was a pain in the butt last year for this from what I understand and this device is running a newer processor and supposedly more secure version of android.
In the end, I would like to have root, so I can get rid of the T-Mobile stuff...and yeah, while I can DISABLE it, that doesn't get rid of it, it's just lying dormant...I still have a disabled app taking up space on my device.

Yes this times 1000. Plus getting rid of bloat (although the LG does not have nearly as much as my Samsung devices had) plus I really want to be able to use Titanium Backup again.
Also...Not sure why everyone is so set on being on the latest version of Android at all times. I learned my lesson on that the hard way. Last device I was on was the Note 4. We were extremely irritated that we were getting Lollipop so late compared to all the other Sammy devices. Boy was I wrong to wish for it. It came with more bugs than new features, most of which made the device nearly unusable to me, resulting in my spending $280 to get the device half paid off so I could JUMP to the G4.
Rather than rolling out a new version of Android, I'm sure many users would prefer that LG work on the number of bugs that some users have experienced thusfar. That being said, 5.1 seems to be doing me pretty well for this device for me
A free wifi tethering method would be nice to have again.
I don't see the link between 5.1.1 and bad sales. If someone refused to get G4 because they won't update it to 5.1.1, I find this hilarious. 5.1.1 is a maintenance update, nothing major as I am aware, so LG can include the most important fixes from the latest available android version through OTA update, and there is no need to show you the latest android build number. 5.1 can include everything 5.1.1 got.

Have you even used Xposed recently? Root itself is fantastic, and does not harm usability. You can use apps like Greenify and Titanium Backup to remove apps and improve battery life, modify the tethering provisioning check to use the hotspot, etc. I also use Xposed on 5.1.1 and on 5.0, 4.4, etc., and I don't have any issues at all. the 10+ modules I use never have problems.
I'm keeping my rooted G3 until we can root the G4, as I need root in some form or another.

The phone is is great all on its own but I am looking forward to no ads and a tweaked Rom to hopefully get rid of the awful lagging and missed touch issues
Give the devs time. There's a lot of money pledged in the bounty board which should attract some top devs, so short of JesusFreke coming out of retirement I doubt it'll be in the next month.

If you purchase the open EUR H815 handset, you can officially unlock the bootloader through LG's Dev website, and from there install TWPR and flash SuperSU for root.
This method is not (yet?) available to other models, however.
You're correct that there are currently no unofficial methods to unlock the bootloader or root the device, yet.

Huawei Mateb9 pro, do you recommend it?

Hello,
I'm reading for a while about Huawei mate 9 pro and found many reviews and comparisons which are very promising.
I really trust this forum and i became little worried when I couldn't find that many threads about it. So I'm asking people who used this device if they recommend to purchase this phone or not.
Appreciate your advices amd thanks in advance.

This is just my personal opinion and experience of the phone, im just loving the phone, it has extremely good camera that i use taking photographs in every situations, the low light photos could be better, but i think software updates can improve that part. There has not been any lagging, everything is so smooth and fast, also i havent had any problems with notifications, they work perfectly in every app i use. There are some bugs in the EMUI 5 software like font changing works only in english language etc, but i think those will be fixed in future updates. Battery life in my personal usage has been very good, usually at night time i have 25-30% battery left even i use phone very much during the day, anyway i would personally recommend this phone to anyone because it is very good phone and i just love it.
Yes, best Android experience I've had in a long time. And, I come from a long line of Samsung devices.
Thanks guys.

Best android around.
People who are after an Iphone built quality and super Android performance at 20% to 30% cheaper comparatively should go after the Mate 9 Pro .There is no similar package around.Dual sim and 128 GB plus 6 GB RAM are insuring it to be the best Android for the months to come regardless what Samsung will try to promote. That Phone is the best i had.
I also like the phone a lot ,the feature i was looking for most was great battery life on a high end device (had the S7 edge,Oneplus 3T before this one ) the battery life is amazing and this is the only phone that I do note have to charge to top up the battery during the day.
Buy it, no regrets.
that sounds promising
thanks guys for your reviews.
but don't you find it weird that there is no section dedicated for this device till now in the forum?!

my only complaint with my M9Pro here in the USA is that i'm still stuck on B124. check for updates through HiCare everyday and nothing. Called Huawei customer service and they say they roll out updates by serial# but I've seen around 2 updates so far that people are on which means that Huawei CS is full of it.
I hate when updates are super delayed. I love the M9Pro but I'm really missing my Nexus 6P because of this one issue. The lack of current security updates and such is nerve racking

While I do know of this method and appreciate your assistance, the point I was trying to make was that getting updates shouldn't require us to jump through external hoops. The manufacturer needs to make updates more easily accessible and if they know they can't do that because of all the customizations they implement then they should consider just using stock android and build their proprietary apps to be Play Store downloadable and simply put restrictions that limits those apps to be installed on certain phones.
Why not just get the China version, works flawlessly on US networks + you get the updates.
U can delete the fitness app
sorry if this is the wrong place to post this..

Are any of you on Tmobile in the USA, and, do you get 4G/LTE?

Thanks if you can help with this! :good::good:

Worth it

Hi i'm thinking of getting the Verizon S8 during the black friday sale, my question is:
1. From people who own it is it generally a good phone and are y'all happy with it?
2. I saw the thread about rooting the US. Snapdragon version i'd like to know if there's anything different/would stop me from rooting since ill be getting it on Verizon? PS. ill be activating it on Verizon but buying it at BestBuy in case that makes a difference.
Thanks for your help

Personally knowing what I know now I'd be looking at a different phone. These things are carrier owned locked bootloader with no unlock on the horizon. The root method sucks with it being so long and complicated, reminds of the Sony Xperia days. Plus you lose 20% battery and there's no fix because locked bootloader. The list can go on but why bother I think you'll get the point. Have fun
I would suggest you OnePlus 5T if you want root, custom roms ecc. But if you want a freaking georgous screen that stretches at it's maximum, a great camera, and overall great build and design I would suggest S8. I have not rooted it yet, and personally I don't find the need to do it. Regarding the looks I can change through substratum or through custom themes(which just install as a normal apk but change even the notification bar). As far as speed goes it is pretty good, been using it for 5months and never noticed a big lag that bothered me.

It is a great phone, with an amazing screen, it´s super fast, has good batterylife and a great camera. All of it even with a stock Samsung ROM.
That said, if you are used to rooting your phones and installing different Custom ROMs and Mods, maybe the US S8 isn´t right for you. It´s a real hassle to root and it can only be charged to 80% after root. The ROM and Mod development is very slowly picking up with Flashfire, although I´m confident we will see some more ROMs in the future, since the installbase is quite big.
So, the Phone is great on it´s own, but I personally wouldn´t buy the US Version, if I would want to use Custom ROMs or Mods.
As everybody said its a great phone as it is . No need for root and custom roms . But if you are really into these things then don't buy it from any carrier .

G4 Play alternative?

Hello folks, sorry if this isn't the right forum,
I really love the Moto G4 Play for its battery life especially, but as many of you know the GPS works very bad.
Do you know any other phone similar to the G4 but with a decent GPS?
Thanks a lot in advance

Moto E4 XT1768 is an excellent choice given your criteria. Very similar to the G4 XT1607 but with fingerprint scanner, front flash, Android 7.1 stock, and reliable, fully functional GPS hardware. Also sports a slightly faster chipset. Most E4 variants are bootloader unlockable.

Are you using a custom ROM? If so, which one?

Spouse cracked the screen on their G4 Play and the estimated repair cost was higher than the original purchase price so we went shopping for a new phone.
Got a Nokia 3.1 and like it a lot. GPS seems to work very well. Comes with Android One so it is very much a stock Android experience. It is Android v8.0 (Oreo) based on Treble with a guarantee of system and security updates for several years.
I am still using my G4 Play but am a bit envious.
p.s. I got a Bluetooth GPS receiver and paired it with my G4 Play so I have decent satellite based location now.

For consideration: https://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_3_1-review-1795p6.php
I'll further qualify my previous E4 suggestion with a bias toward the Qualcom chipset. E4 comes in several flavors; do your homework if you go this route.

Battery life seems reasonable. I'm not the person using it so I haven't fully characterized it.

That review seems a bit brutal. I suppose this depends on where you live too: The phones the author of that review like are not available in retail stores near me. The choice for me was between a Moto G6 flavor and this Nokia as that was all the store had in the general price range that were carrier unlocked.
The Moto was more expensive, had a screen size that was bigger than desired. And I've come away with a bad taste about Moto's update history. The Nokia's Android One claims updates for a couple of OS releases and several years of security updates and, near as I can tell on the Internet, they seem to be honoring that.
Use of a MediaTek process was a bit of a issue for me too. But that seems to come into play more for custom ROMs and, at least at present, this phone is likely to be kept stock.

Everything about new Nokia phones sounds great except the inability to unlock the bootloader. You'll get updates for several years, but what after those years or if something wrong happens with Nokia? You'll be stuck on an old version with no security patches until someone finds a bootloader unlock vulnerability

Yep, lack of an official bootloader unlock is an issue. There seems to be a way to do it on the Qualcom based Nokia phones but the 3.1 is MediaTek based and I haven't noticed a way to do it on those.
