How can I root Samsung Galaxy SM-j320A (Express Prime aka. J3) - Samsung Galaxy J3 (2016) Questions & Answers

Hello,
I have recently acquired a Samsung Galaxy Express Prime, simply put it is a re-branded J3 pre-paid phone from AT&T. I purchased this device for it's immense value. I paid $84.79 after tax etc. where as J3 w/ the same specs runs $137.78 after tax etc. meaning that this device allows you to save exactly $52.99, so you can see the obvious appeal. The device is fast and snappy, and is a slightly better device than the Iphone 5s if you want some comparison on the Apple side (Ewww Apple Lol xD) so the value of this device is outstanding; however there is some downside...bloatware, I was able to disable most of it and save some small amounts of space and remove the icons from being visible in the launcher, but they are still there. This device has 16GB of internal flash, w/ a little over 10GB available out of the box. According to the storage monitor the Android system v6.0.1M is taking up 5.2GB, and most near stock devices running Marshmallow take a little over 3GB..leading me to believe that the bloatware on the device..although hidden and disabled is still taking up near 2GB of space, and I have uninstalled all the ones that I can..and the only way that I know of to 100% remove the bloat is to root the device and forcefully uninstall the bloatware. There are also some small tweaks that I like to do to my rooted devices, but the only problem is that I can't find any information on how to go about rooting this device. What little I did find seemed unreliable and not worth the risk, if anyone knows how I can go about rooting this device it would help alot. Thx in advance, have a wonderful day

Galaxy S5 in 2016

Hello, I am gonna buy a used S5 soon. Does it still hold up by today's standards? I had a nexus 5 until now and by the specs I can only assume the S5 is better. So from my personal experience I think that I will have a smooth experience. Is there any rom that you can suggest? Been using CM on my Nexus 5 so I am familiar with it. My main concern is the battery life so I would like something with pure black themes so I can save some juice from the screen. Last thing is that I am concerned about the longevity of the device considering its hardware. By that I mean that I really dont want to run into any motherboard problems or digitizer and screen issues because the device will not be covered by warranty. Thanks in advance
From my experience the S5 is still pretty good. I've been messing around with my wife's S7 a lot these days and for daily usage the difference between the S5 and S7 is pretty minimal.
But for the love of god don't get the Exynos version (lacking in ROM development), especially since you're coming from a Nexus. Get any of the Qualcomm variants.
Getting a device second hand is always going to be a risk.....you simply don't know how the previous owner treated it. I for one, always look after my devices (i still own my first ever smartphone. It is 5 yrs + old and in perfect working order) my S5 contract finishes in December at which point, I intend to downgrade my contract to SIM only and carry on using the S5. It still does everything I need and does it very well. If it fails at that point I still have 2 other phones I can 'fall back on'. In terms of what to look out for concerning hardware.......
Only 3 things come to mind.....
1) the battery (obviously)
2) the USB port (IMO it is PATHETICALLY fragile and simply can't withstand regular connection/disconnection...This is true for every device that uses this connector....not just the S5) I've had to replace a number of these connectors on several devices.
3) amoled burn in. If it's not already an issue, it WILL be.....guaranteed.
As far as software, all I've ever done to my S5 is......
Root, debloat, xposed and slap Nova launcher over touchwiz....
My setup is stable, pretty good on battery and Nova makes things theme-able....
Pretty much all I need.
I'm scratching my head right now to understand, why are you buying used S5, while you had brilliant Nexus 5 until now... Wait, maybe that's why you're buying it - had... Nevermind :silly:
Anyway, GS5 is my second Android phone after Galaxy S Advance (big upgrade, almost 4 gens of flagships up), which i bought almost 10 months ago, and what can i say about it? I could buy a lot better LG G3 32GB 3GB RAM version for less, but i couldn't resist this AMOLED screen (after having S Advance[emoji14]) and i had to buy it for those blacks. And i must say, that 1 additional GB of RAM would make multi tasking much much better on this phone. But it is what it is.
I've bought G900F so i can use custom ROMs. Right now i'm running Resurrection Remix with Boeffla kernel (previously running CM13/12.1). TouchWiz always was for me ugly (but that's matter of personal taste) and it liked to kill background apps very fast. With RR i can also have CM themes which i love :good: and i use Dark Material - as much black as you can do in whole UI One flaw on AOSP ROMs is camera quality - it's not as good as on TW due to its framework, but i don't care about that[emoji14]Battery life is good for me, but i'm a power user, i carry additional battery in my pocket, so i can't feel the difference as much.
As for the longevity, devs will take care about software , while hardware will slowly get old. I'm sure 801 will be still good SoC, but those 2GB of RAM will reduce its longevity as time goes due to app updates.
Also, about AMOLED burn-in - just try not to exceed 50% of brightness when you don't need it, to minimize its effect. I use ~25% or less in rooms, and i set it to automatic in daylight. After some time you will start noticing the line of your status bar on the top and i suggest you to not paying attention to it, because then you will think only about it and you won't enjoy anything what you will do on your phone. I have burned not only my status bar, but also, battery circle, signal triangle, wifi icon, clock and even Poweramp icon, my friends are telling me to stop listening to music as much[emoji23]One last warning, don't treat IP67 seriously. I'm not telling this from my personal experience, but i saw a couple of people here on XDA with problems after underwater photo sessions. My adventures with S5 and water ends on having to use it in the rain, or with wet hands.
So, that would be my 2 cents on this device. Overall, I'm not angry at it, or happy either. It's hard to have a perfect device, but for me it has everything i need - AMOLED screen, microSD, replaceable battery and custom ROM support. I'll stick to it, until i will see a device with those features.
Anyhow, welcome to klte family, also known as Samsung Galaxy S5 :highfive:

Considering buying, QU about RAM

I'm considering buying an unlocked 16GB Moto G4 Plus. I have a question about multi-tasking with the 2GB of RAM. Let me explain what I mean by giving scenarios:
Currently I'm using a LG Stylo (1GB RAM) but have used a Galaxy S6 Edge+ (4GB RAM).
I like that with the S6e+ I can stream internet radio, press home to open up the browser and view a page or take a pic to post to Facebook, press home then send a message in Hangouts, then press home (or recent apps) and go back to the browser without it having to reload the page because of low memory... all while still streaming.
On the LG Stylo if I press home and then go back to the browser it has to reload the page even if I don't run another app. When I try to post a picture to Facebook by the time it loads the camera or gallery it will need to reload the page and I lose my picture sometimes and have to try again.
My question: How well does the 2GB of RAM work on this phone? Can you browse and do other functions without the page being taking out of memory if you go to send a text or take a pic? What if you had two tabs open?
Thanks for the help! Hope to be here rooting soon!

Will recommend 3gb variant because as you dont close background app.S6 is far superior then g4 as it has better processor and ram. They both cannot be compared.

I understand that and should have said that I realize the S6 is much more of a powerhouse. I'm currently using a device with 1GB of RAM and I do close my background apps ( and use Greenify) but it doesn't help... I wasn't sure if an extra 1GB of RAM would help.
I don't see a 32-gigabyte version for sale anymore tho, I looked... Not on Motorola's website, Amazon, or Swappa. I'm in the US and dunno what happened to it or if it was ever available.
I can go with the 64GB version with 4GBs of RAM but considering the phone has adoptable storage I thought of this as an unnecessary expenditure. I guess it's really about the RAM.. Thank you for replying.
I looked up BLU phones but heard about the battery issues that's why I wanted to go with a major manufacturer.

As far as the 4gb variant is concerned it is useless,i have fifa 16,coc,fb,chrome etc in background even though my ram is not fully used.max 1.8 gb have been used not more then that. Moreover the processor snapdrgn 617 is not that powerfull to use 4gb ram.Battery will get affected for 4gb.Verdict g4 3gb suits best for you.
I'm not sure if it's just an error but any 32 gigabyte version I see says it has only 2 gigs of RAM.
I saw a review saying that the phone has jittery animations and feels sort of sluggish. But once it's rooted you could adjust the memory options, the CPU core control, and have it function a little smoother. I see CM and Pac ROMs....

My LG Stylo has the same type of screen, IPS LCD Capacitive, and so has nearly every other phone I've used. I've never had screen burn in and never heard of it happening unless maybe you keep your screen on for hours. I believe it's image retention and not permanent burn in.
Must be some kind of manufacturing flaw unique to the screens in the Moto that causes it. I read the phone gets very hot and that could add to the problem.
I still think I want to buy it, I can't find any other name brand phones with that high of a screen resolution and PPI for a simular price.
Thanks for answering my questions!

Yeah screen retention which will be for 10 mins.Lol same reason why i bought this phone! If you dont have problem with screen retention you should go for it.As far as the retention is concerned it has been reported by indian users mostly, which the phone was manufactured in tamil nadu, india.Have not heard any one of US having that problem.

Got tempted to butt in with my $0. 02, being a new moto G owner and someone with not many work days to clock in lately.
I have the XT 1643, the Indian variant with 3/32Gb. After almost about a month of (rigorous) use, entailing flashing recovery, kernel and ROM back and forth, I find the ROM/RAM parameter to not really be the clincher.
For one, when I was on stock ROM, without even the OEM unlock and just a handful of playstore apps, the UI was OKAY, not what I'd expected having switched over from a 2014 2gig ram zenfone with a puny 8gig internal storage, an x86 Intel processor (which meant compatibility with only 60-70% of all Android apps) and a 16GB ext SD Card. Its Lollipop 5.0 stock firmware (its last official firmware update, as usual heavily modded UI and a truck load of Asus bloat masquerading as system apps) had pushed me to the end of my rope, but a chance attempt at braving to flash a custom ROM (CM based Android 6), followed by installing xposed mods and whiling my time away on android customization forums and such, helped salvage it from getting tossed out, at least for a good six months till its battery died coinciding with Moto G4 hitting the market.
So, coming back to the current phone, a week on, I unlocked and rooted, installed xposed, crammed up a cache of apps and mods, and spent time following how to guides on xda. But, I wasn't really sure if I'd cracked it as yet. Flashing the kernel was fun first time activity, and following up with the dev and users about its features kept me from comparing performance for a bit. However, with flashing to RR ROM, things have begun to look up, I can go about switching between apps or Chrome tabs with no noticeable lag. There's a large set of customization features, which along with tweaking battery and cpu performance have brought me closer to how I'd want my phone to behave.
TL;DR Having a bare bone OS with chosen essential apps, a stable custom ROM with multiple customization features, mods and apps to tweak performance + battery, is what could ideally make the switch over to a higher RAM device worthwhile, which probably is a lot better than running synthetic benchmark tests and comparing results on forums about tests.
About the 64gig variant, not quite sure why you can't find a 32gig one, though signs seem to point to Motos habit of selling different spec models in different markets. And, unless it came with a standard OEM warranty, I wouldn't buy a phone even if it's the better one.
I agree, warrantee is very important. I wouldn't buy a used phone.
I'll be looking forward to getting this device in the next few months. I'm not worried about internal space since it has adoptable storage but I think I'll spend the extra money for the 4GB version.
Thanks for all the help!

Help with installing the Samsung Phone App on LG V20

I'm running LG V20 on T-Mobile with h91810D build LH-H918 Deodex NRD90M rom rooted with unlocked bootloader and trying to install the samsung phone app simply because I love how clean the dialer is on the Galaxy S8 with the fading in-call background.
I'm running into an issue trying to install the dialer on my phone with the error "The package conflicts with an existing package by the same name"
I've tried all I could to uninstall all the phone related apps on the V20 that I would think that could conflict with the install going as far as completely destroying the calling functions on the phone (thank god for backups) but still running into the same error.
I've tried all I can even as far as attempting to resign the file even thought I'm clueless as to how any of it works so I'm sure I did it wrong so now I turn it over to the XDA community to try and help to see if it is possible or if samsung locks down their apps so well that it's not possible.
I am unable to upload the APK here so I'm sharing a link to where I installed it from (APKMirror) for anyone who wants to give it a shot and offer any advice they can to see if I can get this working.

I'm sorry if this sounds critical but this is like the 5th thread I've run across in 10 minutes with someone who has an LG V20 but wants (for some reason that is beyond my ability to comprehend at this late/early hour) to install Samsung bloatware on it. Does LG not pack enough of their own bloatware into their phones that now we must port it over from the undisputed king of useless space consuming bloatware? Seriously. I'm baffled. AF. I just came from the SM-G935T which was so annoying that once the display got seriously effed TF up I opted to finance an entirely different phone instead of throwing $175 down the drain to get someone else's refurbished S7 Edge. So now I'm a year out from paying off my overrated Edge, which I refuse to drop almost 2 bills into just so it doesn't slice my delicate digits up when I'm playing Archery King At best I'd possibly get it fixed for the purposes of an immediate trade-in/upgrade but seriously, who would want it? Janky root? ☒ Weird rounded off edges making an already delicate display even more delicate? ☒ Bootloader locked tf down like it's a goddamn iPhone 8 (or whatever they're on )? ☒ 32 pitiful GB of storage, half of which ( OK slight exaggeration but for reals, yo ) is packed from floor to rafters with every conceivable type of useless, non-descript, shady AF Sammy/T-Mo bloatware? ☒ Aaaaand the list goes on. And on. And f*****g on. And still, I wouldn't trade my new LG V20 for two S8+ AND a Google Pixel (make it an XL, a OP5 plus some accessories of value and we'll talk ). SO PLEASE FOR ALL THAT IS HOLY EXPLAIN TO ME WHY YOU PEOPLE ARE SO DESPERATE TO INSTALL REALLY GENERIC SAMSUNG GARBAGE ON YOUR LG V20?! I'll trade you my busted up S7 Edge for your obviously unappreciated (or at least underappreciated) LG V20 :fingers-crossed: And the Incipio case that looks great and doesn't interfere with all that Edge swiping action, if that's your bag, nor does it interfere with the pavement smashing every last oversaturated glossy AMOLED inch, you know, ALL 5.5 laggy inches (yeah, Ikr  that's all ) of that glass (front and back btw - because that's how I do). There's bound to be 1000 better 3rd party substitutions available for any given Samsung app you're seeking so desperately to inject into a perfectly non-infected LG. I've lost all understanding of the world we live in. You should just buy a Samsung. Get it out of your system and be better for it. Ask around XDA. Tons of helpful types with many potential suggestions that will more than suit whatever bizarre needs and wants a guy (or girl. Or guy-girl/girl-guy. I'm open minded af) might have. Seriously though. Your phone probably will not accept anything from Sammy on basic principle alone. That's just f*****g weird s**t, my strange interweb comrade :cyclops:

If you could (for free), would you switch to Galaxy S8+?

I'm switching my Galaxy S6 Edge after long using it and I have 2 main choices: OnePlus 5 (128 GB version) or the Galaxy S8+
The main reasons for me to choose the OnePlus are the faster and cleaner android performance, even though I'm a Galaxy user since the Galaxy 2 I never liked the bloatware and the oxygen OS looks wonderful.
The reasons for taking the S8+ are... Well everywhere I searched and almost any review by people who used them both are saying that it is the best android smartphone there is.
Except the reviews, the camera and amazing display and quality are much better.
After a couple of days, and hundreds of video and written reviews and comparisons I still couldn't choose so I decided to ask here, after you've used OP5 for some time, if someone approached and offered you to switch your OP5 with a S8 for free, would you do it?
Please note that cost is not an issue, here in Israel the S8+ costs about 300 ILS (about $85) more than the OP5 and i can afford it if it's worth it.
Nope. OP5 has far superior battery life, it is faster and dash charging is amazing, more ram and storage and basically Stock Android! The S8 has a better display but I'm OK with 1080p (didn't think I would be coming from 1440p phones) as I don't care about VR. Also, better updates and more frequent to date.
I switched from the S8+, the near stock Android is unbeatable for fluidity and just quality of life. Everything seems more iOS like on stock (or near it) Android. And when I say more iOS like I mean the good things about it, such as the fluidity and overall polish.
I switched from the S8. OS is light-years better. I don't need all the gimmicks and love quick updates. Portrait mode is a plus for taking pics of the family.
I'd trade, try it out for a bit, then sell it for another phone lmao. Maybe a Z2 Play or Mi A1. Who knows?
S8+ is a nice phone but all that Samsung bloat I can't deal with
You probably should ask that question in a more Samsung friendly thread because people here are obviously going to be biased. The OP5 is better if you are into rooting or customizing your phone. But it also has terrible camera software --I could take better low light pictures with my $200 Samsung Galaxy J3. The other thing Samsung phones have going for them is the build quality. I've never owned a Samsung phone that broke before I was ready to replace it. I don't think the OP5 has comparable build quality. But if you like to root your phone and flash custom kernels and ROMs the OP5 may be the best phone on the market.
For the looks yes, I came from a s6 edge+ and my girl has a normal s8, but for overall experience, speed and stuff I would def choose the 5, and if I want looks, I just hold my girls phone for a few sec..
They could pay me money on top and I would never come back to Samsung!
As you may have noticed, most of oneplus's users (including me) see the OP5 as a superior device to the s8.
Most people are not buying this phone because it's cheaper.
Coming from an s4, I was considering the s8 and the oneplus 5. But I am going for the OP5, because I think it's the superior device.
S8 is a good phone but I cannot live with Samsung's software
I haven't used Samsung devices much, but simply because I am able to mod this (custom ROMs, kernels, etc.) with virtually no bloatware and heavy skins (such as TouchWiz) makes this the better option for me.
The S8 does have a nice design though, and from reviews/feedback, seems like it has a better camera as well; but that isn't enough for me to switch over.
The 5 is a great device and I think if you choose it, you won't be disappointed!
Considering the fact that I'm switching from the LAGGY S8+ to the OP5 then I guess the answer to this would be NO
I could go either way except for the fact that I need dual sim cards so I don't have to carry 2 phones. I used an s8 for a couple weeks before switching to the op5. They both have there pros and cons which have all been touched on here. I won't switch but I would be happy with either phone. I think the s8 design is prettier and more impressive but the op5 is easier to use.
I like both.
As stated they both have their pros and cons...
S8+ has got a brilliant camera, sd card support and a heap of hardware features to explore. There is always things to find and surprise. Bixby is a little hard to use unless you have a US accent, I find it doesn't understand Aussie to well but it does learn.
The 4gb of ram is noticeable when you hold the Oneplus up to it though.
Oneplus doesn't have sd card support but does have dual sim support. You are stuck with the internal memory you buy so make sure you account for that. It is quick with 8gb ram and easy to flash/theme and mod .
In the end it depends if you like to be able to change roms and mod easily, though the S8+ isn't too hard after bootloader unlock (you just destroy any chance of Samsung honoring your warranty) or like to play with some cool little features you may or may not get over.
It will ultimately come down to you and how you use your device...
Just to be clear here, asking a dev forum of dedicated phone owners how their phone compares to the "competition" is not really going to get you anywhere. Most will fight tooth and nail defending their vaunted purchase and you will get a very biased opinion...
If you don't believe me, ask how it compares to an Apple... Now I've let loose the cat amongst the very heavily armed pidgeons...
I chose OP5 over an Exynos S8 because Samsung's software is the worst and I've been burned too many times. Price didn't enter the equation.
Same. Money wasn't the deciding factor for me. I had an S6... the ritual of disabling all the bloat got old. Too many gimmicks. Plus lots of RAM makes me happy.
I'd post in the S8 forum and ask why they chose S8, see what their responses are, and see if you value those things.
Home button and phone unlocking is way better on the OP. Infinity display is nice but also very fragile. I went with the OP5 instead of the S8 for these two reasons and never regret. This phone rocks.
Coming from an s6 then the s8 for a couple weeks, the home button is really nice of have. Both phones have equally lightning fast fingerprint sensors. The op5 would be much less likely to break if you accidentally drop it it.
Only big issue is Facebook Messenger is still freezing a lot when typing or just sitting idle. After several updates it's still problematic and it's only happening on my op5. I started just messaging on my old HTC m9 which still works fine, as did the s8 and s6 and even an s4 I just sold.
A Google search hasn't helped so far and I'm away from home on vacation without my m9 so it's getting frustrating.
Other than that it's been basically flawless.

[Off topic] For how much did you sell your s4? Thinking of selling it but I'm afraid nobody wants it for a good price (~100$)

Confused... Sell S6E+ and buy S7E?

Hello Masters of Disasters
As I surf all these sites and this forum I couldn't help but notice that Samsung S7 (Edge or non Edge) is getting much more attention from dev teams. It even made it to the official ineageos.org device support list with its both version version. It's hard to find something fitting our model. I hate to break up with S6E+ but it seems to me that I would have much easier time modding, rooting, flashing, installing LineageOs with S7 than with S6E+.
What do You think boys and girls?
It would be only minor upgrade, you won't gain much, better wait price drop and buy Galaxy S8

That is absolutely correct, I wouldn't gain much in performance by buying S7, the photo camera is a bit worse in daylight in S7. The menu buttons at the bottom are "melted in the screen" which is a little irritating. S8 is much more irritating because the whole area is the actual screen, no real physical buttons. That's not impressing.
I do very like the look of my S6E+ and I would like to keep my phone cause I think it's balanced perfectly in every aspect (performance, looks, screen size, real-physical buttons, awesome camera).
The only reason for the change is that I would like to have a phone that supports LineageOS or a bunch of mods that can make it free of Google's ads, non-removable aps, privacy etc. nasty violation.
Can someone help or guide me how to achieve these goals without switching to S7?
Thank You for Your Time to read my post

There is unofficial lineageos, I don't know about stability, but rom that i can recommend you is this : https://forum.xda-developers.com/note5/development/rom-n-fuel-xl1-t3609259
It's extra lite, so extremely debloated, no samsung bull****, perfect rom, also battery life is perfect.
Now about google ads, I use AdAway, it requires root ofcourse but it's perfect.

I have tried this ROM as well, and can confirm you'll get the best battery life possible from this ROM. No edge features though, so I left it. Lack of support on my 928t has me wanting to upgrade as well, except I won't get and s7 edge since that what I had at first (got rid of it because of locked bootloader). Looking towards an s8+, but then again I'm broke so I guess I have no option but to keep my 6

Have you seen/touched S8, worked a bit with it.
I did.
It only does a bit better photos. It's not ergonomic hence problematic. Think twice about that.
But Note 8 on the other hand... wow that's a different story. This phone rocks even it has screen almost all over but non edgy so it saves the day.
