Question: Is it safe to log into gmail after rooting? - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!
So I recently rooted my Samsung Galaxy S5 (SM-G900i)
I flashed the kltedd .tar.md5 file through odin (downloaded the .tar.md5 file through Chainfire's CF Auto Root Website)
Everything worked, after going through the whole process my phone rebooted and everything seems normal.
All my data has been preserved and it all works fine.
The only problem is to check that my phone actually has root access I need to download one of those root-checker apps from the play store, but I need to sign into my Gmail account to get to the play store in the first place.
I just wanted to know if it is safe to log into my gmail account on a rooted device - is it possible in any way shape or form that I might have a sneaky keylogger or some spy-ware that could potentially see my Gmail password?
Any help would be appreciated
Sincerely, a noob to XDA Forums.

If you have rooted then there should be a SuperSU app or similar, and when you enter it it should tell you somewhere if root is working fine.
There's an easy way to check for root, which doesn't involve any app, but you need to be able to connect the phone to a PC and you will need USB drivers, and to get your hands on adb.exe (or android-tools-adb package on Linux). Assuming you've done that:
* Enable developer options. (Settings > About Phone, tap Build number 10 times, you will get a popup telling you that Settings > Developer options has appeared.)
* Enable "USB debugging mode".
* Connect via USB to the PC.
* Run `adb devices`.
* You will be asked if you want to accept the debug connection, and possible if you want to enable MTP, say "yes" to both.
* Run `adb shell`.
* Once inside the shell you can type "su[ENTER]". The terminal should freeze and you should get a popup from your SuperSU app asking if you want to grant root access to ADB. If you don't get a popup and "su" fails in the terminal, you don't have root. If you don't get a popup but you get a "#" prompt in the terminal, you have root, but you don't have a root controller app, which is not good (anybody can get root).
Another even simpler method would be to use a terminal app... provided you already have one installed. Most custom ROMs do, stock ROMs don't. Then you just use the same "su[ENTER]" stuff in the terminal.

also, you can bypass the whole thing of logging into your gmail acct and go directly into your phones main screen, go into menu, settings, about phone and tap on the build number until you see the message stating that you are now a developer, back up one step, go into developer options, check the box to allow the installation of third party apps and just download the root checker apk from elsewhere. Sounds compllicated, but its easier than CLI stuff for the uninitiated

also also, ive never heard of anyone getting a keylogger after merely rooting their phones

It's technically possible if you get your "root app" from random websites. It's a golden opportunity for a hacker, you're practically begging them "please exploit my phone, I'm gonna help by running your app and bypassing all safety measures".

security should be fine as long as you dont lose your device or download apps from unsafe sites.
as for whether it is rooted or not, already answered above.
Good to see another aussie here.
I'm still a bit of a noob too but happy to help with any endevours regarding phone, especially model specific ones (I have G900I too).

How can I activate Sprint Tab?

Thanks for the reply. I meant I bought the Tab without a data plan and do not wish to. It keeps trying to activate but cant. I am looking for a way around it.

I've been grappling with this for a while now, and unfortunately, the activation process can only happen if you were to have service. You could, thanks to Sprint's 30 money back guarantee, buy a month of service, activate your device, and then cancel the service within a few days and you won't be charged. Of course, this invovles spending a whole lot of time on the phone with Sprint, or going into a Sprint store, which you may not want to do. Don't worry though, there is another option.
I decided I didn't want to go through any hassle, so I spent some time fooling around with the system and came up with the following method. It took me a while to in the application manager to track down the programs responsible for the activation prompt, but I found them. What you need to do is this:
NOTE: I have tested this on the SPRINT Tab with the latest software.
*DO NOT uninstall any of these apps, just "Freeze" them. If you delete any, you may loose the ability to do firmware and Android OS updates!*
1. Root your Tab, (preferably with z4root), I suggest using the "permanent root" option.
2. Go to Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Development -> and check "USB Debugging"
3. Install Titanium Backup
4. Run Titanium Backup and go into "Backup/Restore" Look for "Software Update 1.5.0" in the list.
5. Tap the application name.
6. On the window that comes up, select "Freeze" It will give you a confirmation of success and the "Freeze" button will change to "Defrost" now hit the back button.
7. Locate "Sprint Installer 2.0", "Sprint Zone SZ 2.1.11", and "System Updates 1.0.0" Repeat steps 5 and 6 for each of these applications.
8. Close Titanium Backup
9. Restart
Now the activation prompt will not come up and it won't interrupt you when using your Tab. It doesn't affect anything if you plan to use the Tab off-contract with Wifi only.
I chose to "Freeze" the apps because it denies them access to the system, which removes the activation problem. I didn't uninstall them, though because if you want to activate it on the network at any time later, or you need to do a Firmware/Android OS update through official channels, you may need these apps.
If you want to undo this at any time, follow the directions the same way, but during step 6 select "Defrost" instead of "Freeze"
I hope this helps.
Thanks
Works great! Thanks for the info.
It´s posible active the phone

Hi there, Do you think is´t posible to liberate the phone?
This is EXACTLY what I was looking for! Worked GREAT! Thanks!
... but I have a question regarding 2 of the items that are frozen now. like the Software Update 1.5.0 & System Updates 1.0.0 --- are they specific to sprint? what exactly are these for and why do these have to be frozen in order to disable the sprint activation? will i still be able to get firmware updates and all that jazz?
if i want to check for updates, do i need to defrost these?
How to get root app
maybe I'm missing something but how do you get the root app. I.e. to bypass activation you need a root application. However I can't find a way to download apps without the tab being activated. Seems like a paradox. In a nut shell how can I get the z4root application installed when the tab is not yet activated?
Thanks for any help
You can always turn on the WiFi, and connect it to an available network to gain access to the Market.
I too have been struggling with the activation prompt, and since Rooting is still somewhat touchy with our SPH-P100, I've found that the best answer is to put your Tab in Airplane mode, and manually turn on the WiFi. This will keep any options you're unsure of on the back burner 'til the devs here have some more time to save money for, and play with the Tab!

You can find z4root here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
I have a Sprint tab, and if you hit cancel on the activation each time you turn the device on, you can still access your home screen and all the apps and enable wifi to access the market.
To permanently bypass activation, side load & install the z4root app from the link above and install Titanum Backup from the market .. follow the instructions posted by rkmj earlier in this thread.

Sorry for taking so long to respond to this, but my XDA notification settings were all screwed up. I just realized that you asked this. Software Update 1.5.0 and System Updates seem to be Samsung apps that are tied directly to Sprint Zone and the activtion prompt. They run periodically and when they activate, they query Sprint Zone to see if the device has been activated on the network. In order to stop the activation prompt, these need to stop running.
I can't really tell about firmware updates just yet. Based on the way Sprint generally provides them, you will have the option of OTA or via PC. With this fix in place, you will need to run the update via the PC. If you wanted to get the firmware updates OTA, you will need to defrost the programs. Unfortunately, you will also have to activate the device.
My method doesn't change anything on the device. It just disables the prompt. In order to receive anything OTA, you will have to activate the device. I have a theory about how you can both disable the prompt and still query for OTA updates, but I have to do a bit of testing first. I will post back here once I have tested it completely.

[Guide][Step-by-Step & Video]How to Root the Samsung Galaxy Exhibit SGH-T599N

Hey guys in this tutorial i will show you how to root the Samsung Galaxy Exhibit from Metro PCS, model SGH-T599N.
The phone comes Stock with Android Jelly Bean 4.1 Jelly Bean. This will also work on 4.1.2 Jelly Bean.
So lets get started.
There is a tutorial video at the bottom of the page
WARNING:
THIS WILL MOST LIKELY VOID YOUR WARRANTY.
YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK, THERE IS A CHANCE YOU COULD BRICK YOUR PHONE.
What you will need:
1) A Samsung Galaxy Exhibit SGH-T599N
(To check your model number, go to Settings / About Device / Model Number)
2) A PC running Windows (XP, Vista, 7, 8 or 8.1)
3) A Usb Cable
4) Rooting program called VROOT
Step 1:
You need to download the VROOT rooting program.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/f85okpyc1u33zgt/Galaxy_Exhibit_Root.zip
Once the link is downloaded, extract the zip. You will get a .exe file called VRoot_1.7.3.4863_english_cid1005_7337ba1e_89.exe
Run the VRoot_1.7.3.4863_english_cid1005_7337ba1e_89.exe You will be greeted with the VROOT Setup Screen.
Click the Next button. You will be taken to the screen where you can chose where the installer, installs the program. You can chose a directory or use the default. Use the default.
Click the Next button. The next screen will ask you if you want the program to be put in your Start Menu, this is up to you.
Click the Next Button. The next the screen will ask if you want to place a Shortcut on your desktop, again this is up to you.
Click the Next Button. The program will now install it self. It should only take a couple of seconds. once the installer is done you will see the Setup Complete screen. Make sure the Launch VROOT box has a check in it and click the Finish Button.
The VROOT program will open. You will see a screen saying Device is connecting. After a moment the program will install daemon.
Step: 2
For the program to recognize you phone, you will need to turn on Usb Debugging on, on your phone. To do this on your phone go to Settings / Developers Options
Scroll down to the Debugging Section. Look for USB debugging and click on it.
A warning will pop up saying Allow USB debugging, select OK
After you turn on Usb Debugging a second warning should pop up on your phone asking if you wanna allow Usb debugging between your computer and phone. Check the always allow and then OK. Checking Always makes it so you do not have see that warning everything. Your computer and phone will allow debugging connect every time you connect in that mode.
Step 3
Now back on your PC you should see VROOT trying to connect to your phone. Once it connects you should see your phones model number on the screen. T599N
VROOT will now check to see if your phone already has root permission. VROOT will tell you, you do not have root.
The green root button in the bottom right corner should now be available. Press the Root button.
You will see the Rooting now screen. This should only take a moment to complete.
When VROOT is done, you will see a screen saying Success, your T599N is rooted. Rebooting.
You can now click complete, you are done with the VROOT program.
Step 4
You Exhibit will now reboot back into the Android OS
Once you are back at your home screen, open the app drawer in the bottom right hand corner to show all your phone apps. Scroll all the way to the right. You should now have two new apps installed on your phone. Superuser and one that is in Chinese. The one in Chinese was installed when VROOT told you it was installing daemon. You will no longer need that app.
The Superuser app is the one we want. This app regulates which app you grant root permission to. Just open the app. Make sure it does no tell you, you do not have root permission.
Now my suggestion here is to get a different app to do the same thing. The one you should use is SuperSU by Chainfire from the Play Store. Go to the Play Store and in the search look for SuperSU. There are 2 verions, a free one and a paid one. The free on works just fine.
Install this version. You will now have a app that looks like a Superman symbol with a # inside of it. Open the app. Make sure SuperSU does not tell you, you do not have root.
Now anytime a app requests root, a warning will pop up from SuperSU asking if you want to allow that app root access.
You have the option to Deny or Grant that app root. You can also check the Ask again box. If you check this box and Grant a app root, after some time SuperSU will pop up again asking the same thing. If you chose to Grant a app root without checking the box, that app will have full root access anytime you use it.
If you Deny it then the app will not have root access and not work the way it was ment to.
And that's it guys. You now have root access on your Metro PCS Samsung Galaxy Exhibit SGH-T599N

still working, EXE auto-updated, then i followed simple instructions, and the device rebooted with root.
vroot does install its own Super User Permission Management app, and a System Cleaner app (which are both actually useful), and some other junk (i uninstalled this). all their apps seem to have links to their other apps/appstore, but as long as you ignore them the apps themselves seem to be harmless enough.

question for Galaxy Express 3(not listed). Trying to bypass google verification

so my friend found a samsung galaxy express 3 from at & t and wanted me to set it up for him. so he gave it to me, first thing i did was factory reset it in recovery mode. Then problems started. I dont have the previous owners account so i need to bypass the google verification. But i have no idea how. ive tried the side sync method, the open with option never showed up. this phone doesn't have usb hosting so i cant use an otg cable. i tried the real term method, just an error when i put the codes. i tried the no computer methods, i can get into ultra power saving mode, but thats it. with the other no computer methods it comes down to restarting it, and when it comes back on theirs camera access but for me when i restart it its locked, but no camera or phone access. ive tried every option i could find and even tried installing a stock ROM, succeeded with the stock rom installation thinking it would remove the google verification but still didn't. does anybody have any ideas? i cant enable USB debugging. so i dont think i can root it and install a custom rom and disable it. at least i think. im new to this stuff so if anybody has suggestions for me then that would be great. Thank you in advance
Google frp bypass. Methods have changed, due to patching. You need to research the most current method. I used Rootjunky's method back in the fall of 2016. Worked like a charm. Consisted of a phony call through an emulator, triggered a request for contact storage, led to browser opening playstore for a vcard app. Download frp bypass app instead, viola!! Imho, too much work for that phone.
I managed to get into chrome. Now what?
So with a bunch of messing around I managed to get into chrome through the emergency call but I'm in chrome. Which is how most methods work is through chrome. U install an app then run it and ur able to bypass it pretty much. But I can't install any apks. When I download a file it ask if I wanna download it, then starts it but never prompts me when it's done so I can't open it and install it. If I redowbload the same file it lets me look at the downloaded files and I can even get to the SD card. But if I tap on anything that's not a folder it kicks me back to the browser. So how could I get on the Samsung store to get es file explorer or install apks? Any help would be great thanks
I've had success setting up a samsung account installing es file explorer, then putting the app needed on sd card or Bluetooth it via a settings app. Rootjunky has the apks. But yes the 911 loophole is there if you don't have a sim to do a realterm dialer method

Inaccessible Note 4 [BROKEN DIGITIZER] - How to recover data?

Need some help, got a broken note 4 here and I want to access my files that are still stored inside it. I tried the Vysor Application to see the display but the problem is I forgot the passcode of my phone because i haven't touched that phone for over a month now.
My phone is running custom Note 7 port rom (Ditto Note 7) and I have TWRP installed as a recovery option for my phone. I tried using the adb shell comand su to my phone to remove the gesture.key but it seems that I haven't accept permissions for the adb on my device.
How do I clear the passcode of my phone? or can I clear the settings and data (without internal storage) using TWRP?
Need replies ASAP please
There's probably a few dozen (at least) threads on recovering data on XDA
Did you try the forum search?
I did and amazingly this turned up very quickly
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2339530
If that doesn't nail it, try a search yourself, it's free, and easy
Another option is to go to Find my phone/android device manager website, sign in, and unlock the phone, and then connect it to PC and copy as normal....
p.s. the denied on su is most likely because you do not have apps not apps AND adb option enabled in your superuser app under developer settings

Google Play Services Error: Wants Permissions

I've been using my Essential phone for over a year without any real problems. From the very beginning I limited the permissions that GPS has access to. I've been using Android phones for a few years, but this is the first time that I haven't rooted my phone and removed GPS pretty quickly. Last week I signed out of my Google account on my phone. I immediately started getting Google Play Services Error messages asking me to enable every single permission for GPS. I don't want to do this. I don't use any Google apps, and I don't think any of the apps that I do use rely on GPS.
I ended up signing back into my account (at which time Google immediately downloaded every Google app that I'd removed from my phone already), but I'm still getting constant permission error notifications from GPS. Seems mostly related to when I'm using the built in dialer. Is there an option short of giving Google permission to my life to stop these error messages? The phone seems to work fine (although reception may be even worse than normal), but could using a 3rd party dialer fix things? Or should I just stop Play Services from being able to give notifications? Or, do I need to just bite the bullet and root and put Lineage on my phone?
Have you considered going the microG route? And maybe it was just frustration speaking, but you don't need to root to install a custom ROM. Just unlock the bootloader ?

Thanks for that. I'd looked at NoGApps a few years ago, but it wasn't finished enough at the time to work on my device, so I just went without. Had not kept up to date on the evolution, so appreciate you linking me to this.
And I had thought that the bootloader was unlocked on Essential, but you still had to root. Which would have been easier I think, since unlocking the bootloader is usually the difficult step. Will take a look at the instructions and maybe take a stab at this next weekend. Thanks.
The bootloader is unlockable on the PH-1, but you still have to unlock it. If you are using a windows computer, everything you need is on the Essentials developer page. At the bottom of the linked page, is a link to the ADB/Fastboot binaries for windows. If you click through to the current builds, the instructions to unlock are at the bottom, part of the fastboot instructions. Once you're unlocked, you don't need to follow the fastboot flash image instructions.
However, if you're unfamiliar with A/B slot devices, please make sure to read and understand about them. It's different than non-slot services. While long in the tooth, you can start with read the docs - Mata document. Recovery is no longer a separate partition, but when flashed, is embedded into the boot.img. That's also where root goes, and so anytime you flash something that overwrites boot, you lose recovery and root. All manageable, but requires understanding.
An anti-Google ROM alternative might be /e/. It's based on an older build, but it's designed to run without Google. I have no personal experience with this ROM.
Change dialer or root fix
For some reason, Google phone dialer is mad because Play Services doesn't have access to the microphone or body sensors, etc. The solution seems to be changing dialers. I'd like to know what receiver or service triggers this interaction.
Ok, I found something here https://nzeid.net/samsung-galaxy-s10e-root-guide
"Disabling Notifications That Are Grayed Out
If you open the details for an app under "Apps" in "Settings", you will see a "Notifications" button that accesses a menu of all the notifications that the given app is allowed to broadcast. Some system apps have notification settings under this menu that are grayed out. Now that the phone is rooted, you can defeat these restrictions.
Copy the file containing these notification settings to a computer:
Code:
adb shell
su
cp /data/system/notification_policy.xml /sdcard/
exit
exit
adb pull /sdcard/notification_policy.xml
Using any text editor, open the file. You will notice the following XML structure for each app:
Code:
<package name="com.google.android.dialer" show_badge="true" app_user_locked_fields="0" uid="10263">
...
<channel id="com.google.android.gms.availability" name="Google Play services availability" importance="4" sound="content://settings/system/notification_sound" usage="5" content_type="4" flags="0" show_badge="true" deleted="true" />
...
</package>
Notice the attribute "name" with the value "Google Play services availability". That name matches the grayed out item on your phone. Next to it is another attribute called "importance" whose value is "4". If you want the notifications to stop, set "importance" to "0".
In short: set "importance" to "0" to stop notifications. Set "importance" to "4" if you want the notifications.
Once you are done, copy the file back:
Code:
adb push notification_policy.xml /sdcard/notification_policy.xml adb shell su cp /sdcard/notification_policy.xml /data/system/notification_policy.xml
Reboot the phone for good measure."
It works. But I just used a root file manager and text editor to edit the "importance" value to "0". I also changed the "locked" value from "4" to "0" so I can easily turn it back on from the system settings menu for the Phone app and is no longer greyed out.:good:
