[OPINION][GUIDE] My best ROM experience and my thoughts about it - G 2014 General

Hello everyone!
I wanted to wright this post because it was kind of a surprise to me the outcome of my decision.
Since I bought my XT1068 back in April 2015, I constantly changed between custom ROM's and kernels, from Lollipop to Nougat, hoping to get the best out of my device, in terms of performance and also in terms of battery (as everyone else).
I faced a lot of great ROM's (CM 12.1, MinimalOS, Blisspop, TurboROM, RR, Radium, etc.) What I began to realise, was that I was still missing the bug free ROM experience I wanted, along with the performance and battery life that everyone wants.
Lately, I have been using @Danilo-Sanchez Unnofficial CM 12.1 (thanks a lot for all awesome the work man) who kept updating it with latest security patches, but I missed some of the MM features.
A couple of days ago, after reading some comments and seeing some reports I thought to my self why not go with stock (stock? omg ), and decided to install it and update it to latest version.
Along with Root, Xposed, Greenify and Amplify, I ended up with a blazing fast smooth ROM, with great performance, incredible battery life, and all the tweaks that xposed has to offer.
I now have a constant 400+Mb free RAM device with 5+hours of SoT with average usage (YouTube, browsing Chrome, Instagram, Messenger, SMS).
For those who want to know how I did it here is the guide:
There are two Stock Moto Marshmallow builds.
This is the first one, you will get everything stock, including recovery, and you will lose all data and root.
After flashing according to the link, you will receive after some minutes the second update. Install the update and then you can finally flash TWRP and then root your device.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/general/official-stock-firmware-t3018682
Here is the link for the TWRP and root thread. Remember to flash latest TWRP.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2…/…/xt1063-t3018818
I always have 450+ MB off free RAM and 5+hours of SoT. This achieved with xposed, greenify and amplify.
PS: I would like to remember that I dont have Facebook neither Snapchat apps, which take a lot of ram and battery. For Facebook I use Chrome shortcut.
Battery TIP:
Always try to plug in your phone to the charger between 5% and 10% and NEVER let your phone turn off itself because of no battery.
Also, if you can, always charge to 100% and try not to charge overnight, unplug when it reaches 100%.
Hope I was clear and if I helped you, hit thanks! :good:

I have to admit that I didn't use stock MM rom a lot.
I've just used stock LP 5.0.2 (which I hated because of that memory leak bug).
When update to MM came I was already using CM12.1 (later I updated to MM only to update the bootloader, but didn't use the ROM).
Was the stereo channels bug fixed on latest update?

You should give it a try
Yes here stereo channels working as they should, not inverted.

After trying many ROMs on here, and ultimately not being satisfied (jumping from ROM to ROM). I found myself always going back to stock. And now seeing as how Cyanogen Inc. no longer supports CyanogenMod...not that I was ever really a fan on CM based ROMs in the first place (but apparently it was important to custom ROM development or something), ROM development for the phone has really gotten slow.
All I ever really wanted was a stable, bug free, as pure as possible AOSP ROM that's maintained and kept up-to-date with the following Apps...
G-Apps:
Google Play Store
Google Play Services
Google Now Launcher
Google Search App
Google Keyboard
And any other apps/libs required for those to work properly. Any other G-Apps that I may have needed could have been downloaded through Google Play.
Moto-Apps:
Stock Motorola Camera (fully working)
That's pretty much the only Motorola app I care about.
But no, I was unable to find such an AOSP ROM so now stock ROM is the only ROM I'll use till I part ways with my Moto G (Titan). Rooted of course, but no Xposed for me...I don't really care about customization and TBH I don't really care much for Nougat and Nougat based ROMs either. I was using stock Marshmallow for the longest while but recently decided to try stock Lollipop again. I had forgotten how responsive stock Lollipop was compared to Marshmallow, I personal never experienced any sort of memory leak on stock 5.0.2 Lollipop. Now I've decided to just stick with stock Lollipop till the end.
I've disabled the following Apps:
Android Live Wallpapers
Android System WebView
Android Work Assistant
Assist
Bubbles
Calendar
Calendar Storage
Clock
Cloud Print
com.android.wallpaper.holospiral
CQATest
Device Management
Drive
Email

I use an app called Disable Service by WangQi to disable the following apps:
com.motorola.motgeofencesvc
MotoCare
MotoCareInt
Motorola Services Main
MotorolaOTA --a must disable for me, as it will try to check for updates then nag you to death to upgrade which will brick a downgraded phone.
NativeDropBoxAgent
(BlurServiceMother) Service from stock Gallery App --otherwise you'll keep getting errors in the gallery app due to NativeDropBoxAgent service being disabled.
Now I have better battery life than I did under Marshmallow and have up to 605 MBs of free RAM and a smooth responsive experience. Note that I also set animations to .5x under Developer Options and turned off touch sounds.

Most of the apps you disabled I unninstalled myself, I prefer to free the space (although I dont really use it).
The main reason I use xposed is for amplify, greenify and for some small tweaks with gravity box, I dont like many apps messing with the phone.
Anyway, there were some features I missed from MM, that is why I switch from Lollipop.
Thanks for your comment!

@maximuns Since I am currently facing the dilemma (hold on for LineageOS 14.1 Snapshot or revert back to stock), I have some questions for you:
1) What apps have you disabled/uninstalled and with which app did you disable/uninstall them? Can you make a list of them as @MobileHD did with his/hers?
2) What custom ROM were you using prior to reverting to stock ROM? I've read posts mentioning some ugly hardbricking when reverting from custom ROM to stock ROM and that I should stick to custom ROM, if I have one installed. I am currently using LineageOS 14.1 200170126.
3) What kind of weekly or monthly maintenance do you perform to keep your phone bug/ram leak free? I myself wipe cache from recovery (TWRP) every 15 days and use sd maid once a month. But I cannot keep the phone from lagging and it really gets on my nerves.
4) How may apps do you have currently installed? I feel that keeping 77 apps is killing my phone's ram.
5) Do we really need to install TWRP? Can't we just use the command "fastboot boot twrp.img" and run the custom recovery just to install the root app?I ask this because we won't be able to install OTA updates after installing a custom recovery.
6) Did you make any changes to the default settings of Greenify or Amplify? What for do you use the Gravity Box app exactly? Care to mention what changes have you done to the default settings please?

Just a question. In stock roms, how you disable the ascending ringtone? I really dont like it.

You will brick your phone when you use default OTA and update it from older Android(or bootloader) version to newer.(I think its because of the bootloader) Just care!

You only brick your phone if you downgrade android with a higher bootloader to a lower (for example from 4887 - latest to 4886 - previous).
When in stock, you can update your android when the update arrives, as long as you have stock recovery, stock ROM and no ROOT. (not sure about the last one)

I think there is no option for that and I think I don't have ascending ringtone, never noticed.

These are all my installed apps, I don't remember the ones I uninstalled, so I will leave here all apps and you can see the ones you have that are not here (which will be the ones I uninstalled). The frozen apps are identified.

2) What custom ROM were you using prior to reverting to stock ROM? I've read posts mentioning some ugly hardbricking when reverting from custom ROM to stock ROM and that I should stick to custom ROM, if I have one installed.
I was on AOKP N (January 19th build). I don't know of such issues.
3) What kind of weekly or monthly maintenance do you perform to keep your phone bug/ram leak free?
I usually clean cache when it reaches around 500/600Mb and once a month I fstrim my device (there are many apps that do that). My device usually stays smooth.
4) How may apps do you have currently installed?
Currently 30 apps that I installed myself, I normally try to have only the essentials so my device keeps running smoothly.
5) Do we really need to install TWRP? Can't we just use the command "fastboot boot twrp.img" and run the custom recovery just to install the root app?I ask this because we won't be able to install OTA updates after installing a custom recovery.
I know that with the stock Lollipop build you could apply that command, but with marshammow I sincerely don't know if that can be done, sorry. Even so, I don't think that there will be more official OTA's for our device, so for me that is no problem at all.
6) Did you make any changes to the default settings of Greenify or Amplify? What for do you use the Gravity Box app exactly?
Greenify:
I now use Naptime from Francisco Franco instead of Greenify, it is more what I want. When I lock my device, it immediately enters Doze mode, so almost no battery is drained as soon as I turn the screen off. Also phone sensors are turned off.
I only don't apply it to Google Messenger app and phonograph because I wouldn't receive SMS/MMS neither would I be able to listen to music with screen off.
Amplify:
I leave everything as it is, all default.
Gravity Box:
I use Gravity Box app for some visual tweaks and funcionality.
Device unlocks automatically once I put the correct PIN code;
Long pressing power button when screen off turns on the flashlight;
Quick Settings tweaks (personal taste);
Turn on cursor control keys on navbar;
Advanced reboot menu;
Ram usage on recents menu;
Clear all button on recents menu.
I hope I was clear with everything, any questions feel free to ask!
Hit thanks if I helped you :good:

I think if you don't try to downgrade or mess around with the bootloader then you should be fine. For reference that's the motoboot.img file from stock ROMs. As a precaution I always rename that file to something like _motoboot.img and remove any reference to it from the EasyInstaller script I use to flash my ROM. I also do the same for gpt.bin, it seems to cause problems when you try to go back to an older partition table when downgrading. (it can cause issues with WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, Data connections etc...)
I also use an app called Trimmer (fstrim) by AdminseHow which seems to keep my phone snappy.
These are the apps I have installed (bare in mind that I'm a very minimalist user):

Right now I am on LineageOS 14.1 20160702. My bootloader version is 48.86. So I guess it is safe to flash stock Marshmallow, since 48.86 is compatible with stock MM and I won't have to worry about possible hardbrick, right?
Furthermore, how do you keep system apps frozen? I guess that it's not the Servicely app that does the trick.

Yes you're right
I used Link2SD app

What are your thoughts on Radium Redefined? It's a stock rom which with some tweaks. I saw in your main post that you've used it but I would be interested to know your opinion on it.

am i the only dude happy with lineageos? i´m on 20160208 build and i have to say it´s pretty good...with about 50 apps and a 32gb sd it´s holding up. i bought a p9 a couple weeks ago but i still find myself comfortable with the g2 even with a crackled screen...my gf just moved on from the 1st gen moto g with cracked screen as well to a p9 lite...and guess what, i´m not jumping on the huawei boat cause LOS isn´t on the way yet...i´ve been a CM dude long time and can´t stand the bloatware on huawei phones..

It is a stock based rom, with a low memory consumption and really light, but the development has seized, so I prefer to stick with stock, the security patch is more recent and with root you can unninstall all the apps you don't want and tweak the rom as I did.
Anyway, it is an awesome choice also.
Keep in mind that it is stock based, so many of the kernels and mods are not compatible (just like stock)
Hope I helped

BLOATWARE remove List-Script for all Quark

Bloatware: What is it?Bloatware wasn’t invented with the Android phone, but Android phone manufacturers and cell phone carriers have really taken advantage of it. Bloatware is all of the extra software applications that come pre-installed on your Android (in addition to vanilla Android)–it can include any kind of application but some of the most notable examples are carrier apps and/or trial apps that you have to pay for after a certain time to keep using it. At best these apps can simply be taking up space on your phone, or at worst it can be running in the background without your knowledge and drain your battery.
Source: http://whatisbloatware.com/bloatware/
I Started this thread in the intention of share and teach how to get rid of Bloatware apps of Moto Maxx.
Right now i will focus more on the custom ROM, after new releases of stock ROM i will give more support but for stock 5.0.2 i will only give advice not a script (i don't really spent time using stock 5.0.2).
I have made a flash zip that I use it for months and keep it update to all the devices I have, so the script i share is safe and fully working, but it may contain a app that the user use, so check the list of content of the zip before flash it, make a backup, and if yours backup doesn't help you can allays just flash your ROM again it will flash back all the deleted app.
1° Post, disclaimer, download how to install.
2° Post, help, changelog, list of content of the scrip for custom ROM, advice list for stock ROM, safe app to remove but not in the script, safe app to freeze not to deleted.
3° Post, how to make yourself
How to use my script:
- Download link
Cleaner-Custom-ROM-V-10X.zip this can be used on all devices.
Cleaner-Verizon-from-Custom-ROM.zip this is recommend to XT1225 and GSM only as this remove all Verizon app from custom ROM
- Make a TWRP backup
- Flash via TWRP
- Reboot
- Enjoy
! Check second post for the list of app deleted, Help, changelog etc...
All of this list can be used for other device if you end up here by search be aware of that, but do not use my script in other device it may cause trouble, try to adapt it to yours
Help:
If your device dont boot, or it keep receiving a Force closed message, you may have delete a wrong app, so use yours backup, if yous backup doesn't help you can allays just flash your ROM again it will flash back all the deleted app.

Safe app to remove but not in the script:
This app i believe most users use but they are safe to delete or freeze.
Theme app:
/system/priv-app/ThemeChooser (it may show as Themes 1.0 on titanium)
/system/priv-app/ThemesProvider (it may show as Themes Provider 2.0 on titanium)
Lock clock, this will not delete yours lock clock, it only remove the customized option of app clock that may be in the custom ROM, like RR
/system/app/LockClock (it may show as Widgets 3.4.1 on titanium) this app like to eat the battery
This LockClock Widgets app can use up to 5% of the battery, in my use my battery last for 36 to 48h, this app disable may give me 2 to 4h more of battery.
Safe app to freeze not to deleted.
Basically there is some app you may never use (but they are need to exist) or used only once in awhile, i use titanium backup app to freeze those app's. This will help to extend your battery use, if you don't use disable/freeze it.
Bluetooth pack, if this are freeze Bluetooth will not work.
Bluetooth extensions 5.1.1xxxxxx
Bluetooth share 5.1.1xxxxxx
End of Bluetooth pack
GPS pack, if this are freeze GPS will not work.
com.motorola.motogeofencesvc or MotogeofenceSvc
Fuse Location XXX (location app)
LocationServices 1.0 (location app) may exist two of this apk
End of GPS pack
NFC pack , if this are freeze NFC will not work.
Nfc Service 5.1.1xxxxx
Tags (NFC app)
End of NFC pack
PrintSpooler Print app
Terminal Background terminal app
OmniSwitch (custom app may only exist on RR ROM)
Trebuchet 1.0 (laucher app) yo may freeze it if use other launcher
Update 1.2 (RR only, is a update app it doesn't work for quark)
How to make yourself:
There is two ways:
1° User can edit my script and make they on.
2° delete or freeze the apk via Titanium backup or delete via Root browser
Note: in 4.4.4 all the app share the same folder, in 5.x.x +, it app has it own folder. So in 4.4.4 you need to delete the file of the apk, and in 5.x.x + you need to delete the apk folder.
1° How to Edit the script
To edit the script
Basically you open the zip, go to the folder:
\META-INF\com\google\android
Open the file
updater-script
And edit and save it...
I recommend edit this file using Notepad++
To remove a app from the script you remove the lines of the script that contain the app, there is two for lines it app, one display the name the other is the one that delete the app .
To add a app to the script you add the lines in the script and put the right name and path of that app.
I recommend to add ui_print below line 27 of the script, and delete_recursive below line 63 of the script.
Do not change any line above (# do not change anything above this) originally at line 12 or below (# do not change anything below this) originally line 97.
What it line/command do:
ui_print(" Removing BasicDreams"); * This will print to the TWRP screen what is inside the quotation marks, yes ui_print lines are just a cosmetic ting!
delete("/system/app/atfwd.apk"); * This will deleted a file, inside the quotation marks the path of the file
delete_recursive("/system/app/BasicDreams"); * This will deleted the folder inside the quotation marks the path of the folder
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "sleep", "1"); * This will stop for some seconds the TWRP script, so the user can read what is on the screen, the number is the quotation marks is the time in seconds
I recommend to add ui_print below line 27 of the script, and delete_recursive below line 63 of the script.
Any line that starts whit # will not be read by TWRP.
If you have any trouble editing the script let me know.
2° delete or freeze the apk via Titanium backup or delete via Root browser
This is really simple no need to explain...
If you choose the file browser... delete the apk file if in 4.4.4, delete the apk folder if on 5.x.x +
Thanks! A couple of these apps I use, but most I don't. Especially the wallpaper crap.

Those wallpaper are in every ROM, i don't really know way, maybe somebody use it, i never use it and some times i can see that it use the battery...
You may use the script and remove those lines of app you use, and flash your personal zip after it ROM update... Or just freeze it, but some times the apk change version and after a ROM update it is "un-freeze" so you need to check in titanium after a ROM update...
V 1.0.2:
Made the script more easy to understand

Thanks for reminding me about freezing with Titanium Backup. I use the app every day for years but I've rarely frozen stuff. However, I just solved two crashing problems by freezing.

1) I froze the motogeofences apk (moto GPS) that crashes every time with Waze. Since I use TopNTP I don't need Moto's buggy GPS (discussed thoroughly in the CM12.1 thread). With that apk frozen, navigated all day yesterday with no GPS issues and no motogeofences crash error report! :good:
___
2) Also since I re-flash the Moto Camera and Gallery every time I flash a CM daily, I get a gallery crash report whenever I reboot. Some conflict there, so I froze the Gallery I am not using.
You are correct that if the apk is updated at some point, I will have to re-freeze but right now that solution is working.
I will also use your script to actually remove some other stuff, but in those two cases the freeze is working to solve the crashing errors.

Nice find...
I don't really use GPS i test to see if works but never use on the move.
What about use motogeofences from another moto device? I have made a zip from victara CM12.1.
I install on my device and GPS works, i open Waze and it works but i'm not on the move...
If you can do a test, i made two zip one the apk form quark cm12.1 another from victara CM12.1, just in case the victara cause trouble.
If this fix we can update CM source using this apk... of course after a long test but i can just share the zip on CM thread after if you have success and other users can test it... :good:
So, just to confirm -- the Victara zip installs another version of the Moto GP from another device? And the Quark zip is to restore the Quark Moto GPS?
I'll try it, just wanted confirmation on exactly what it does.
______
Also, with the Quark Moto GPS, the Waze app crashes when using navigation to a certain destination -- when the app is giving you directions, usually within a minute or so it crashes. If you just have the app open for general driving (police warnings, accident warnings) but are not actively using it for route directions, it runs fine.

Yes victara is Moto X 2014, if you flash victara you will have MotGeoFenceSvc from victara, if you flash quark you flash back the original MotGeoFenceSvc that is on Quark CM12.1 today.
BTW, I started a navigation and no bug, but I'm not moving, i read in some quark thread that the bug is only present when using the mobile data, on wifi not, i'm on wifi now...
Let see what happens to you...

Very sorry, but the Victara version crashed in Waze navigation mode also.
I unfroze (Quark) MotGeoFenceSvc in Titanium Backup, rebooted into recovery, flashed the Victara zip, booted back into system. When I left work about an hour later, I opened Waze and put it into navigation mode to go home. Soon after I left the parking lot, I got the crash error message.
After that crash, Waze continued to work just like it always does, and GPS is fine. But MotGeoFenceSvc still crashed.
When I got home, I flashed the Quark version back, then froze it in Titanium Backup. This morning when I went to work, and put Waze in Navigation mode, it did not crash.
______
When I use Google Maps navigation, MotGeoFenceSvc does NOT crash.
MotGeoFenceSvc only crashes in Waze mapping app (which is also owned by Google), and even then only when in Navigation mode (for turn-by-turn directions).
Even though I know how to drive home from work, I use the Waze navigation mode because it will quickly re-route me to alternate roads if there is a traffic accident. Google Maps also will re-route you but not as quickly. Waze is crowd sourced, in addition to the traffic data coming from government systems. And due to the crowd sourcing, Waze will warn you about police speed traps or other hazards.

Ok, that going to be a little more hard to find a fix to the motogps app. But at least frozen works that is a +. I will see if i can reproduce the bug on my device so i can make a more test to fix it...

New 7.1.2 image and root

Has anyone successfully installed and rooted the new nougat image just released? i want to give it a go but not without Kodi. its my main streamer.
It has only been a week or so. I think we'll have to give it some more time.
What good is root on the NP? Kodi can be installed and updated from the play store or stand alone APK

Off the top of my head I can think of these pro's:
1. Using the phone as remote. DroidMote is a superior alternative.
2. Give Kodi access to power states.
3. Get rid of the default launcher - forever.
4. Force sideloaded apps to open in landscape mode.
5. Making backup images of the whole device (TWRP+Tasker) and individual apps (Titanium Backup) on regular basis. The best reason to root IMO.
6. Block ads system wide.
7. Block certain undesired services (such as automatic updates).
8. Use unsupported remotes designed for consoles.
9. Unlock the full potential of Tasker.
10. Install Xposed (especially for xprivacy).
11. Expandable storage - writing to external storage.
12. Wifi/LAN adb access.
Root is liberty to do whatever you want to do with your device. Should always be an option for customers.
I am a fan off root access, just never knew there was any real use for it on the NP. thanks for the list, I'll have to check some of those out, especially droidmote for my linux server
root 7.1.2
use nexus root toolkit to temp boot into custom recovery goto supersu.c.o.m to download latest version of supersu 2.79 in zip format through usb flash from the custom recovery on to 7.1.2 nexus player
use busybox from appstore ,sideload launcher from appstore to complete root
also use stickmount and download the 2 files in app to get fat32 and more file system usable
disable automatic updates to stop nexus player from rebooting
Anyone have review comments on it?
Fast/Stable/memory usage/
Can you just install Nova launcher and use it as a desktop?
I'm waiting to try this so I can get rid of the bugs in the current 6.0 rom I'm on.

As far as I know, unless anything has changed, in order to use Nova Launcher on the Nexus Player as if it was a tablet in landscape mode, you'll need to install one of the "full android" custom roms. The stock Android TV interface/launcher is pretty locked down in Nougat. Also, as far as I'm aware, the stock nougat Android TV leanback launcher can't be swapped out for a 3rd party launcher like you speak of, although it was possible in earlier android versions to run a different launcher other than the stock leanback... As to what I've used in the past on earlier ATV versions -- "HAL Launcher", a 3rd party Android TV leanback launcher on the Play Store, specifically comes to mind.

That's too bad.
Any ROM developers out there planning to release a full android ROM based on this?
The closest I've found is 7.1.1 by zulu99 http://www.videomap.it/forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=1609 I will try that soon.

Im using that rom since today. Is fast, light and has inbuilt gapps ( and Its only 300 mb the size).
The few things i dont like is that
1)i cant use "Android tv remote" app. (i guess i will have to try "droid mote".
2) having clásic play store is nice (to avoid sideloading apps) but, because you alredy have a play store, you cant have "play store tv". (and apps designed for tv like Spotify tv and youtube tv cant be installed from clásic play store).
I like to check New apps made for Android tv and i cant now. So i have to sideload the apps i want.
3) when you see "recents" you cant delete apps by swypping to bottom, instead you have to use a mouse or a remote with air mouse).
3.1) there are a few moments like before when you realise this rom cant be moved at all with nexus remote's few buttons. So the "Android tv" experience is half broken. (i will see if with droid mote can be "replaced")

The best part is that you can use a regular keyboard and mouse, #1 and #3 of your dislikes will be taken care of if you do the same. I'm using his previous lollirock 6.0 ROM with a logitech K400 KB/mouse and it works great.
Only downsides with the 6.0 ROM I've seen are:
1. low device RAM and slowish CPU causes apps to stop responding.
2. apps that use popup dialogs (titanium backup, ttorrent etc) turn the whole screen black unless you turn off hardware overlays every time you reboot.
3. some apps rotate the screen and you need other apps to restore the orientation to landscape.

This ROM works great, much better than 6.0.
Less ANRs and faster response. Only bug is app-specific where the screen rotates. No other issues so far.
Using Nova Launcher and ES file explorer.
Best part is that I installed it all on the TV with my K400 keyboard and TWRP
Steps:
1. Backup current ROM to ext media...Just in case. Also backup all your apps using a tool Ike Titanium backup to ext media.
2. Download latest TWRP, Google Fugu 7.1.2 ROM Zip, latest SuperSu, zulu 7.1.1 ROM to ext media. Extract the zulu ROM zip as the two IMG files need to be flashed individually
3.flash the latest TWRP. Reboot into the updated recovery using the device button. Skip this step if you already have a new recovery.
4. Install the Google ROM zip image first...Because zulu's instructions menton it.
5. Install the boot and system images from the custom ROM one by one.
6. Wipe data and cache. I unplugged my HDD for extra safety.
This will wipe internal media like /downloads
7. Root by flashing the superSU zip
8. Reboot. Done.

I've tried that and others too. When a heavy app is running these services seem to get killed, as we only have 1GB RAM.
Nova has that option too.

Chinese or english ?
Chinese ROM with English option. I received it via OTA 28th of December. I f*king hated it, and reverted back to 26s (previously I had 20s and it was a fine ROM).
My description of it is pasted below from another topic, but bottom line, it has a crappy folder interface, no entering/exiting animations, it's harder to return back from a folder, and it will screw google services.
If you go to the original topic and scroll down a little you'll see some screenshots I posted.
----------------------------------------------------------
Ok, my phone just updated by OTA yesterday from 20S to 28S (yeah, it jumped 7 updates, I know).
Well, the new update is a pile of crap:
1- After the 1,2GB update the playstore became corrupted. I tried to clean cache and data of Google services and playstore as I saw in a video, it didn't work. Then I uninstalled those 2 and google framework, and tried to install them with Google Installer (that app that installs the Playstore in chinese phones that don't have gapps). It installed them but it didn't work. I downloaded the most recent Google Installer apk and repeated the process, again it didn't work. F*cking seriously??
2- Some system apps now have splash screen ads which make you wait. Very professional, LeEco
3- The smooth zoom in / zoom out animations every time we entered/exited a folder are gone, now you enter one and can scroll sideways to get to another folder while their titles are in the top sliding horizontally, metro style. Worst even it's harder to exit the folder: before this update we clicked a free spot and it exited it, but now we have to tap a free spot in the right side to the "+" sign, or it won't exit, I have to put my finger all the way down to tap the back button.
And the turd in the top of the cake, when a folder is entered, the OS displays f*cking ads!! chinese ads, in my folders! Thankfully this can be disabled, but what the hell, Leeco?
4- The Phone Manager app is much more intrusive always complaining about cleaning, data plans and telling me to "accelerate apps"
5- A butload of more chinese apps installed
6- In the browser (that also has a splash screen), if I choose "other countries" as a location I loose the Bing and google options as search engines with only the chinese search engines available, so I have to set my location as USA (I'm in europe). If I wanted only chinese search engines I would have choose as my location, oh I don't know... China, maybe? What stupidity is this?
7- The folder icon now only shows 4 apps maximum, before it supported 9, which was much more useful
So, anyone else with these kind of problems, was your playstore app ruined too?
I'm planning to downgrade to a version without this stupid folder navigation system, and of course with a funcioning playstore. Which version is that? 26S? 27S?
I like the previous version and don't want to install "pure android" or buggy cooked roms.
I hope anyone can answer my questions, thank you and sorry for the rant

5.9.28S is cr*p...
My daughter received the 5.9.28S update for her X500 little over a week ago, i got it 2 days ago on my X620....
IMHO do NOT upgrade to that version because for the last few days i've been trying to get GApps to work on the
X500 and X620 (both unrooted) but Google Play Services will NOT work on 5.9.28S. My daughter is the
most unhappy girl in the world at the moment because every friggin app that needs Google Play Services doesn't work...
I've tried everything i could think of and i've tried a lot of solutions from the most well known places for these kinda
problems on the interwebs. Not ONE solution worked, both the X500 and X620 have been factory reset several times
and its the same story "Google Play Services stopped working" over and over and over again... Worst update EVER!
It's driving me NUTS!!! I need to revert both phones back to 5.9.23S or 5.9.26S.
@pipoawas
You can turn of the ads... Long press free spot on screen, go to "Desktop settings" and disable "Media recommend".
But i think you found that out already
*Edit:
Tried to revert to 5.9.23S on my wiped X620 with the file from LeTV.... It FAILS to install during recovery. What the ... I give up....
@Excorio
Yes, I know about disabling the ads, but we're still stuck with the splash screens and the hedious launcher: when exiting a folder, if the '+' sign is at the right with no space left at it's right side, you can't exit that folder without going down to the back button.
I discovered for myself how to make google services to work, and it wasn't from any solution on the web. Here, it's the 1st post. You will also have to do another extra step to synchronize your google contacts with the phone contacts (aka, getting your phone contacts populated with your google contacts, e.g. gmail contacts), if that's your case, or else the phone contacts will be empty. To find it just scrool a little down from that 1st post (it's the big "EDIT" in red).
Yes you can export the contacts manually in a csv file from google contacts to the phone contacts, but they will never sync: any change you do to one won't update in the other
One thing that's pissing me off is that I'm having trouble with the 26S:
In the google keyboard (gboard), even though I added my home language, it underlines in red any word from my language; even stranger, despite underlining them, it keeps suggesting them (so it knows them after all). Even worse every time I tap on a word the drop down menu pops up suggesting english words, despite the fact that I have set the keyboard to write in my language.
That and any keyboard I try (4 of them) completly freeze every time I try to update a comment in facebook. *Any keyboard*
So I tried to revert to 23S like you, and like you, it gives me an error. I tried 20S, another error (it's meant to be flashed in twrp only or something, I thought). Then I went to their official rom site (https://bbs.le.com/zt/eui/le_1s.html), with the kind of official roms that work with the original recovery (that I have), I downloaded the 13S, renamed to 'update.zip', tried to downgrade to it, and guess what, another error! With an official rom, with original recovery, in a phone that was never rooted!
F*CK YOU, Leeco!
EDIT: I just found out why 23s, 20s and 13s seem to be off limits, it's not that they're meant to be flashed with twrp, it's because of this (translated from chinese):
After the Android 5.0 (EUI and EUI versions under 13s and 13s) is upgraded to Android 6.0 (15s and above) , the underlying code logic of the system changes. It is not supported to roll back from Android 6.0 to the previous Android 5.0 version .

The 3 roms I mentioned before are Android 5.0. I guess the update to 6.0 (26s, 28s) changed something in the phone, I'm guessing it's the recovery, that now rejects roms from Android 5

To be honest, if i could get Google services running on 5.9.028S_12161 (Stable release) on my X620 i wouldn't mind the so called "improvements" of that update....
I have read your post about how you got it working... It was one of the first i read while searching on XDA I actually used the same installation package you mention in your post, that apk also gave me the same "corrupt apk error". I did what you did and still it wouldn't work on 5.9.028S, i read the post several times (lol) and tried to get it working serveral times but it failed. I then searched for another installer (more recent one called "Google Installer v2 for Xiaomi / MIUI Devices") and tried that one on 5.9.028S but that one also didnt work. After that i lost my patience, cuz i was trying for a couple of days already, and i went on the forum again to write the rant on this page https://forum.xda-developers.com/le...om-rom-to-official-stock-rom-5-t3725302/page3
While i was writing that post i was downloading 5.9.026S_06141 (Stable release) from this forum page https://forum.xda-developers.com/le-2/development/mtk-chipset-custom-rom-to-official-t3715691 I had NO hopes for it to work because of all the previous FAILS (grrrrrrr....) but i could try anyway right. So after downloading i copied it to my phone's root storage and renamed it to update.zip and started the update from withing the file manager AND i crossed my fingers also
OMG it worked! I now have 5.9.026S on my phone again. Then i used that same "Google Installer v2 for Xiaomi / MIUI Devices". It installed all needed apps to get stuff working. So after some installations and a reboot the Google Play Services was working again, no errors. I was able to access the Play Store and every other Google app EXCEPT for Gmail. I couldnt get Gmail running cuz Gmail popped an error saying gmail has a problem with google play services. So just to be sure i checked the Play Services version and it was 438 but i need 440 for my X620. So i updated Play Services to 11.9.51 (440-177350961) and i was able to get into Gmail again without any error. It was just a wrong Services version. Pfff....
Now my X620 is purring like a kitten on 26S again like before. The ONLY thing that's p*ssing me off is that i get a notification from an app thats installed on the phone called "Performance Monitor". If i run the Play Store for example the notification says "Google Play Store skip 48 frames!" (see image below). I have never EVER seen that before. This goes for any app im starting up or have running. The notification pops up now and again telling me some app "skipped xx frames."
What the heck is that thing and why is this happening? More importantly how do i make it go away?

Good to know you got it working, I guess my solution worked only for me (that, and your phone is X620 while mine is the X500)
To my surprise 23S seems to be Android 6.0, according to the "about phone". Then why the hell did it refuse to install??
Bear in mind that I'm almost certain that my "contact Sync solution" seems to be the culprit for my issue of only one language being recognized by the google keyboard; that or is an incompatibility with Android 6 and that particular Google Sync apk, because later I tried 13S rom, then Google Installer 1.3 which installed all the necessary apks with no errors (aka, no need to install a external apk for Google Sync), and the Gboard recognizes both languages.
You really like the "upgrades" of 28S? yacchh The default browser takes some 5 seconds before it even opens a website, because of 1, sometimes 2 (!) splashscreens. And really, what new upgrades does 28S has? being Marshmellow? big deal, I don't notice it in my daily life, so a previous version is fine by me.
About the "Performance Monitor", there's got to be a way to disable some notifications in the app, otherwise I recommend you disable all of the Performance Monitor notifications in the settings->notifications->permissions
That 48 frames thingy is new to me... are you sure you didn't activate something about performance either in the "Performance Monitor" or in the developer options?
Anyway, that's a chinese app, I suggest you disable their notifications like I described above with the "Performance Monitor", or even disable some of those apps altoghether (you can't do that with *every* chinese app though)
By the way, how did you update the Play Services to 11.9.51? you hunted for the apk online, or is there another method that I'm not aware about?
I don't like the "improvements" they made in the new version but it's not that i run into stuff i need to change. Also i use Chrome for browsing. The default browser is not that good imho and i have been using Swiftkey as a keyboard for ages and works great for me...
I can not set permissions for the "Performance Monitor". This app was already on the phone after i installed 26S so it must come with 26S? I also did not enable anything to make it come up with those messages. I'm also not able to set permissions for that app or disable notifications, the most ANNOYING thing about that notification is that the phone vibrates with it also... (See image below) and i can not uninstall it. If anyone has an answer to this Performance Monitior thing plz do tell cuz i cant find anything about it.
I did indeed hunt for the Google Installer online. Here's the page i got it from: http://www.teamandroid.com/2017/06/21/download-google-installer-v2/. The only problem with this one was that it installed 438 and not 440. I was not able to upgrade to 440 manually or thru the Play Store (I cant find it in my Play Store, dunno why) so i installed an app called "Play Services Info" from the Play Store. I've used that one before and always worked for me. The app shows what version you have installed and you can also upgrade from the current version to the latest version by tapping "PLAY STORE". (See image below). It then opens a Play Store page where you can download/install the latest version, you also have the option to download it from APK Mirror.
Another fun fact about the System Update app in 26S is that even if you disable Auto-update in Settings it will STILL download 5.9.028S and it WILL try to get the new version installed. I noticed this morning that it had downloaded it and it wanted me to update to 28S! No way thats gonna happen lol. Crappy thing about that update message is on the screen that you cant get it to close by using the back button for example.
So i just shut down my phone by holding the power button, i then connected the phone to my PC and powered the phone up. On my PC i went into the file system of the phone, deleted the update zip file from data\com.letv.android.ota. I went into settings and denied the storage permission for the updater app. Just to be sure i rebooted the phone and there's no more message about the update. I then opened the updater app and it said i had the latest version lol... It now thinks 26S is the latest version even if you tap the update button. It still recognizes 26S as the latest version so im confident 28S will never come by again in the updater...
gboard has a better prediction in my opinion, and that facebook issue also happens with swiftkey.
chrome is bloated and google is the new Big Brother now. I would recommend opera or vivaldi.
For the Performance Monitor notifications go to settings, notification management, see if you can find "Performance Monitor" and choose it. Also the Phone Manager app (the icon is a tuxedo ) has some permission settings that might be useful, including the disabling of apps.
If that doesn't work, then your options are either rooting your phone so you have permission to mess with that app at will, or get another ROM (26S, 23S)
You can also see the google play services version number in app management/google play services.
To delete new updates from the update app you just have to go to app management, choose 'system update' and wipe it's data (or cache); you will see that one of them has some ~1.3 GB of data.
I'm afraid the system update notification may appear again, I too denied storage and notification permissions, and that damn thing appeared to me again later. No promises , but try to wipe the data and cache from that app and never run it again, so it doesnt have any permissions (you still havent agreeded with its licence, you know, that popup "do you give this app permission to access blablabla")

So I upgraded to 26s, and I hated so I tried downgrading using flashing but for some reason my bootloader won't unlock so I upgraded to 28s. It's better than the 26s in my opinion, less bloatware than the 26s, new awesome camera, app drawer, improved battery life. My Gapps are working successfully, I downloaded them from here https://youtu.be/8VU270w99bA there are links in the description so no need to wait for it like he does. My calendar keeps crashing tho, and the splash screens are hideous, but I don't have a problem with folders because I was used to the app drawer before this, and now I have it again I don't use folder on the main screen anymore. Chinese ads are disabled (but seriously though what the freak??) And I think it's functional enough, at least until I figure out how to downgrade to my stock rom lol
Why did you hate 26S? is basically the same as 20S, but it lets you update the gallery, calendar and browser to the new 28S versions (it asks you for each app, sooner or later).
But I didn't update these apps since I like the old gallery with it's recycle bin, and the 26S browser already supports more than 16 tabs and doesn't freak out with the search engines and location
You prefer the app drawer? To each it's own I guess But it's hard to find the app you want in the middle of so many apps including system apps. Folders are a must, they're organized according to *your* tastes and your software designations.
The new camera still doesn't seem as good as the google's Open Camera app. At least it doesn't made that loud sound when taking a picture and it's faster than open camera specially in burst mode.
As for the locked bootloader, have you tried fastboot oem unlock in fastboot? From there you just have to copy the stock rom as update.zip (no caps lock) in the root of the virtual sd card, flash the original letv recovery, reboot, and the phone will flash the original stock ROM. Maybe you can do this through TWRP too, but I'm not sure.
For some reason I can't update to the 28S OTA (I have 20S), when updating it says "failed to update! Cause: corrupted"
I have the original recovery, the phone is unrooted (it was rooted before but I erased the system folder)
Why is this happening??
Also FYI, I want to update to this rom which I don't like, because my phone is having strange behaviours even after wipes and flashing the original roms:
Whatsapp and now Telegram often don't deliver the messages when the phone is idle (I have to constantly open the apps to see if there are new messages), and now another issue, those blue filter apps like twilight suddenly stop working and close (no banner in status bar, no "badge" icon, nothing"). I had this app working for a full year before, and now this happens, WTF?? the same happens wit hanother similar filter app.
It's like messaging and these filter apps get kicked from memory, (though still being shown in multitasking screen)
I have gave all permissions to all of them and configured them to autostart after boot
It's like something is roten inside the phone, and decaying further.... no amount of wipes and fresh installed roms will correct this. How in the hell is this possible?

Stable AOSP 7.1 setup w/ working Google and Voice - ACHIEVED!

This guide is to install AOSP 7.1.2 and GApps on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, model GT-P7500 ("p4"). It has also been reported working on the Wifi-only version GT-P7510 ("p4wifi") with minor changes, noted in the instructions. I will update this main post as better information becomes known.
Updated 2018-Aug-06
After a couple dozen wipe-and-retry sessions, I thought I'd share my current setup which to date has been the most stable configuration I've had between Nougat and Oreo. I've had absolutely no stability issues so far with this setup, and I even have fully functional Google search, voice search (and Ok Google), and voice typing - no crashes. Anyone who's tried to install a modern GApps on these devices will know the frustration of literally endless and unstoppable "....has stopped" messages!
Here's what I've got working on my GT-P7500:
- AOSP Nougat 7.1 (all thanks to @decatf)
- Fully functional Google Apps - NO "... has stopped working"/"... keeps crashing" issues. None.
- Google Search, Google Now, voice search, voice typing, and other voice-related services ALL WORK. No crashing.
I should also mention that I have NOT included the instructions to create the 1GB /system partition. I figured this out when I was trying to install modern GApps that needed more space; in the end the instructions below turned out to be the best and do not require the expanded space. I have posted the file in another thread if anyone wants it for other purposes.
Installation Instructions:
Download these files to your PC. Some files are different for different variants of the device - make sure you get the right ones for your device!
Odin v1.85 (download)
Use only this version, the newer ones don't work well with this device.
TeamWin Recovery Project
Custom unofficial versions for p4* by @decatf. Direct download links below; select the right one for your device. (original thread / downloads page) Some have reported issues with TWRP 3.1.1; if you experience issues, try TWRP 2.8.7.0 instead.
TWRP 3.1.1.0 - for GT-P7500/p4 (download) - for GT-P7510/p4wifi (download) - for SGH-T859 (download)
TWRP 2.8.7.0 - for GT-P7500/p4 (download) - for GT-P7510/p4wifi (download) - for SGH-T859 (download)
Android Open Source Project 7.1.2 Custom Built for Galaxy Tab 10.1 - AOSP 7.1.2 built for p4* by @decatf (downloads page) (original thread).
decatf's AOSP 7.1.2 2017-10-05 - for GT-P7500/p4 (download) - for GT-P7510/p4wifi (download) - for SGH-T859 (download)
SuperSU v2.82 (download) (original thread).
Custom GApps from decatf's Lollipop release (download) (original thread).
Yes, really, the Lollipop version. Just trust me.
Boot into Download mode (instructions).
Connect to PC.
Start up Odin v1.85.
If the device is properly recognized, it will show up in the first of the row of white squares at the top. If not, install the Samsung USB Drivers and start again.
Use Odin 1.85 to install TWRP 3.1.1 Custom.
Reboot to Recovery mode (instructions).
Wipe the device, including the /system partition.
Transfer the AOSP, SuperSU, and GApps files to the device.
Install decatf's AOSP 7.1.2.
Install SuperSU v2.82.
Do NOT install GApps at this time, despite all the instructions everywhere else that you would normally install GApps before the first boot. This older release is being used to get a version of the Google app that works on this tablet's no-longer-supported CPU, and the install is done after first boot to bypass Google's Setup Wizard which will put you in an impossible-to-exit loop.
Reboot to System, and allow complete boot-up. Note that the boot will take several minutes as Android 7 does its thing setting up - be patient!
Once fully booted, wait a minute for the system to settle, then reboot back into Recovery.
Install custom GApps.
Reboot to System. Boot should be much faster this time.
You can do this part later, but the final steps will be smoother if you do this first.
Install a CPU Speed Control program of your choice. Device Control, 3C Toolbox, No-Frills CPU, heck even Automate or Tasker if you already have a script setup.
Set your CPU Max speed to 1400 MHz (1.4 GHz). I find stability issues at anything above 1400 on my device; your mileage may vary. When testing speeds, do not set them to apply on boot until you are certain it is still stable, or you may have some difficulty reverting.
Optionally Set your CPU Governer to Performance. This results in a smoother system overall, and doesn't seem to have much of an effect on battery life. I also use some settings to drop the Governer to Interactive when the screen is off, back to Performance on screen on. You can do this using any number of programs like Automate, Tasker, IFTTT, 3C Toolbox, and many others...
Most important step - open Play Store, go to My Apps, select Google, click the Menu in the top-right corner, and uncheck Auto-Updates. Alternately, you can go to Play Store Settings, and disable auto-updates altogether, but that is more troublesome than simply inhibiting the single app.
Update Google Play Services. It will need to be updated before most of the newer apps will function, so might as well do it now.
Install all the other Google apps you want from the Play Store, and any updates... you will need to update Play Services before most of the newer apps will function... but never, ever update the main Google app.
Open Settings.
Scroll to the bottom, and open Language and Input. Select Physical Keyboard settings, and enable "Show Virtual Keyboard". This ROM fakes having a physical keyboard always connected for some reason, so you will never see an on-screen keyboard unless you turn this on.
As long as we're in Settings, go to Security, and enable Unknown Sources. You'll probably want this.
Set up your Wi-Fi connection.
Adjust any of your other preferred settings.
You're finished! Try installing some of the software below.
Known issues:
Browser will crash once or twice during the first few minutes of operation for unknown reasons. Doesn't seem to happen again after that.
Recommended software that works: (I'll add Play Store links later...)
3C Toolbox / 3C Toolbox Pro - I've found this to be an excellent package for numerous functions including CPU control, app control, and battery reporting - I was able to quickly determine which of my chargers would charge it fastest. Also gives options for optimizing device on each boot and a number of other useful functions.
Via Browser, a modern browser built to be slim and speedy "for geeks". It is surprisingly responsive compared to the other two options on this old device.
decatf's Chromium for Tegra 2 CPUs (direct link to Downloads). This is a modern browser with all the features you expect, but compiled to run on the older CPU. It is a little bit slow but is essentially Chrome without the official branding, including the ability to sync with Chrome on other devices. @decatf is nice enough to keep compiling new versions to keep it roughly on par with Chrome, let's hope he keeps it up.
Firefox Focus, a privacy-focused version of the Firefox browser maintained separately. For whatever reason, this one is still compiled for older devices where the full browser is not. It is a modern and relatively speedy browser which can be nice to have on hand, but purposely eliminates features most people want in a daily-use browser, like bookmarks, history, etc.
Got suggestions for useful software that functions well on this old device? Let me know!
Mainstream software that WILL NOT WORK, even though it shows up as compatible in the Play Store and will install fine (but complain about your CPU type or report 'unsupported device'):
Google Chrome browser - as an alternative, check out decatf's Chromium, noted above.

You read it. I have a Tab 10.1 (GT-P7500) which I have managed to configure with decatf's AOSF Nougat 7.1, Google Apps with fully functional Google App and Voice Search (NO crashes), and with an enlarged /system partition so there is actually room on the partition to install some extra system apps without mucking about with linking or anything.
I slapped a quick guide to the GApps bit on the end of decatf's 7.1 thread in Development, but I wonder if there is enough of an interested audience for me to write up how I did the whole thing?

I could find little to no information on how to do any of this, but I pieced it all together, experimented, and got it working. I've solved most of the problems I was having, including the ones that seem to be most commonly posted here from what I can see.
So here's what I've got working on my GT-P7500:
- decatf's AOSF Nougat 7.1
- Fully functional Google Apps, NO "... has stopped working"/"... keeps crashing" issues. None.
- Google App WORKS. No crashing.
- Google Now WORKS. No crashing.
- Voice search WORKS. No crashing.
- Voice typing and other voice-related services WORK. No crashing.
- Larger /system partition.
What I haven't figured out or haven't worked on yet:
- Some apps do not seem to be reading the compass properly, but I think a test app showed it as working, so needs more investigation...
- Get (standard) Firefox running.
- Which partitions can be safely reduced or eliminated to increase available data space.
- Experimenting to see if any voltage adjustments will allow 1.6GHz overclocking to function without freezing up. My device will only run stable at 1.4GHz

Yes Please!
Please post the instructions. I still use the OG Galaxy Tab 10.1 regularly. Yes its slow as all heck, and barely runs 2 apps at a time. But Id like to do this just for giggles before my Yoga Book comes in the mail and i lay my 6yr old Tab to rest.
I'd also be very much interested in this. I just got one of these as a gift for a NGO that I'm working for, and would love to be able to use it...
yes please!
Please post instructions/guide. Would love to able to update the tablet. My daughter uses it and it's so slow
pls advice if said method can be aplied to P7100
I am also interested in what you did to get everything working (for me, the Setup Wizard continually crashes right after the first screen).

Yes they posted it here:

I followed all the steps up until I got to 'install SuperSU'. First root I did, it stopped the home button/recent apps button from working. So I started again and didn't install it
GApps worked perfectly and I was able to login to google and download all my apps
Once I rebooted the system, the tablet was stuck on the "Android" logo for about 5-8 mins so I left it and then it loaded normally. 2nd time it loaded perfectly.
Installed Device Control [root] but it said it wasn't able to access the processor tab so uninstalled.
FYI, I had to use TWRP 2.8.7.0 available at the same link https://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=24424 for my p4wifi. I tried the latter one, but didnt work so just copied over the older tar file, installed in TWRP itself, rebooted recovery, and then the rest of the steps worked. Thanks OP for trying to bring this old tablet back to life!
When I install aosp-7.1-p4-20171005.zip, I got:
E3004: This package is for "p4" devices; this is a "p4wifi"
and stop installing
How to solve this?

My bad, so sorry, I forgot to provide the links for multiple devices! I've fixed the main post. You want to get this file: https://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=26886
Perfect guide, thank you! Brought my long forgotten tab back to life with some extra sparkle. I too had to use TWRP 2.8.7.0 to get the ROM to install on my P4. (Donwload link to 2.8 Recovery as the main thread links were down : https://get.xda-developers.com/dl/1....md5?key=juCucVnKuO7-Lt_mR3qH6g&ts=1534633325)
Word/Excel
Hi! I can't launch Microsoft Word/Excel/PowerPoint from Play Store. I get a message "This device uses a processor that doesn't meet the system requirements for installing Office.". Have I done something wrong during the update? Thanks!
Mine is running very smoothly including internet and video, however, I am having the following issues:
- home screen circle and task history triangle buttons in the bottom menu are not working
- when I plug in the USB cable my computer recognizes the device but no menu pops up on the tablet allowing me to select file sharing
- I can't access developer options in the settings menu (tapping 7 times on the build version does not bring it up)
So right now I can't move any files to the tablet.

Slide down the notification bar. Select Nougat symbol to switch the USB mode.
Can you run Microsoft Word?

Unfortuntately, something is wrong with my onscreen menus. I can't swipe down to expand the menu, so I only see the top row of symbols (wifi, user, flashlight, auto-rotate, Bluetooth) and can't get to any other symbols. I'm kind of new to this so I'm not sure what impact different versions of TWRP would have - my version is 3.0.3. Maybe I should update to the version noted in the post.
I get the same error for Word.
Good guide, but some inconsistencies in the sequence.
For example, you indicate to disable the auto-update on the Google app BEFORE to fill in your Google account: it's impossible.
And even after you enter your Google account, you need to install at least one application (and therefore activate the wifi) to see the Google app in the list "My applications".
Other than that, it's more stable than my previous installation, and just for that: thank you!

Good guide, I successfully installed Nougat on my Tab 10.1. following your steps. Very smooth. BTW, I didn't install any Gapps son I can't provide any feedback about it. I can say overclocking to 1400 Mhz seems pretty stable on my unit.
Regarding the non-NEON issue, I found this guy built a relatively recent Firefox 59 package compatible with our device. It's not the latest version, but it's better than what we had. It works fine for me.:good:

[DISCUSSION]Best ROM Currently 11/2018

Best ROM Currently (11/2018)
Look at the date above. This is for current, relevant info. I'm looking for people's opinions on the best ROMs right now. Things to consider: speed & functionality, & whatever else you think is important. There aren't many options at all these days.
Please chime in & let's get this debate going!
I'll go first. I plan on updating this post as I try more. BTW the big reason I created this thread is to save people time. I spent at least a week now trying to get a functional & fast (or at least usable) ROM. ICS, which is the last ver of Android the manufacturer supports, is just too old to consider an option, in my opinion. So I tried https://forum.xda-developers.com/eee-pad-transformer/development/rom-t3318496 last & it's just way too slow for me. I did the bigwheelie partition increase, but honestly I don't think that's necessary for most of us (& it took me a long time!). & It takes forever to read each thread & hundreds of posts inside them to get up to date regarding these ROMs...just to find out something doesn't work. People often aren't nice about repeat questions & expect you to read through hundreds of pages...Im the opposite! I want to save you time & give you an up to date summary of ROM options & what to expect. I also found out the hard way that Google Play doesn't work on tduros Marshmallow ROM. Not his fault, darn Google. BUT there's MicroG as an alternative.
So there you have my first review:
KatKiss KatchMellow is waaaay to slow for me. Gapps doesn't work (tablet will keep restarting), but MicroG is a Google Play alternative.
I'll try out older ROMs next to see if speed gets any better & report back...
UPDATE:
I exhaustively tried getting microg to work on both KatKiss KatchMellow & Lollipop, but finally gave up. I'm sure its possible, but I ran out of time & patience.
I did however end up with a pretty fast solution: KatKiss Lollipop with Fdroid for my app store, and via that I installed DavCal (to tie into my Google Calendars) & Simple Calendar that displayed this. Many apps I wanted worked. Some not but I found an alternative. MX player plays videos fine & theres a million audio apps. Id recommend this.
Thank you for this. I also came here to find the best and fastest ROM but was overwhelmed by the number of comments to sift through. I have KatKiss 6.0.1 with playstore but no other Google apps. It's a bit slow. I'm gonna try KatKiss Lollipop with FDroid.
If anybody finds a solution to have google play store and no constant bootloping.... I've tried Katkiss 6.01, 5 and now went down to Omnirom kitkat 4.4 they all reboot constantly with google play store
I'm using Tims katsmallow. Gapps is an absolute no-go. I tried microg and ended up with the same bootloop/reboot after installing YouTube. I'm currently using no gapps and f-droid. It works fine, and functional. I want to use the chromecast, and that's not functional. I have seen some reference to CM or even lineage existing for the 101. I can't track it down though. I'm going to dig into that next, maybe even compile a build of lineage if it ever existed.

We never had lineage. I think the newest CM was all the way back to 10.3. Our TWRP is now very outdated and that may cause problems flashing any newer ROMs
Yeah, I find references to lineage, but it appears that it never was built. I found CM 10.2, and am considering flashing it...but I'm fairly sure it won't be any better than Tims latest build. It would be nice if we could convince him to do one last build for us, but it seems fairly clear that he is done.

Hi, inspired by your comments I undusted my old TF101 and brought it back to life.
Objective: To have a working tablet for my children to play.
Restrictions: Tablet must be responsive and easy to use. Ads should be eradicated or reduced to a minimum. Tablet must not auto-reboot nor crash.
Initial state: Rooted tablet with TWRP recovery and Timduru's Marsmallow (random reboot problem) ROM installed. Linux computer with adb tools installed. A microSD (FAT32) holding every zip file I needed to flash.
Procedure:
Step 1. I've wiped everything (system, dalvik, cachè), all, using TWRP.
Step 2. Kind of followed Jan's guide at KCORE.ORG. (Read it here).
------ I did install Timduru's last Android 6 (a.k.a. Marshamallow) ROM (v34 from 2017). (Available here).
------ I skipped Super SU 2.52 from Timduru's (not sure whether it was a good idea or not).
------ I did not install any gapps.
------ Flashed F-droid (NanoDroid-fdorid and NanoDroid-patcher zips. I used the latest I found, 20.3.2018208). It was actually Nanolx's NanoDroid (Available here). It might be important to mention that when I selected Timduru's ROM to be flashed using TWRP, it asked me whether I wanted to add more zips to the flashing process; so I added both NanoDroid files to the queue (but skipped Super Su because I didn't want it to be flashed).
It took some time to finish the flashing process. Once it did I wiped dalvik and cachè, and rebooted.
----- Tablet booted just fine. When it finished I immediately rebooted to recovery (TWRP).
----- Then I flashed the last Super Su version I could find (v2.82-201705271822). The official site didn't provide a valid download so I used google to find an alternate source for it. (Remember to checksum everything before installing to avoid errors or malware -Trojans, virus, etc.-)
----- Once Super Su was flashed I rebooted (didn't wipe anything this time). It rebooted a couple of times until it was idle. I then ran Super Su app to check if it was Ok. It was. Then fixed some settings like language (Spanish, in my case), time zone (Mexico City) and location (changed to 'high accuracy' from 'device only'). And then connected to the Internet.
----- I ran F-droid and disabled all repositories but microG. Forced repositories update and installed microG Services Core and microG Service Framework Proxy.
---- Then I re-enabled the F-droid repository, forced it to update and upgraded microG (for me it was available).
---- Installed the recomended backends:
---- ++ UnifiedNlp (no GAPPS).
---- ++ MozillaNlpBackend (I didn't want the one from Apple as Jan did).
---- ++ NominatimNlpBackend
---- ++ WiFi Location Service (I don't know if this was necessary but I installed it anyway).
---- ++ Local GSM Location (I think this wasn't necessary because the tablet doesn't have GSM nor any other cellular SIM, but I installed it anyway to cover all my bases).
---- Patched the ROM to allow signature spoofing. (Check Jan's article about this). The second and third patch weren't applied because the files were already patched but I followed every step there to the end.
---- Followed Jan's article at sections "Configuring microG Services" and "Reinstall Google Play Store"
Step 3. I took the opportunity to install and run the AdBlocker script from this thread. In my case there was no pdf but the script file. I downloaded the raw text file and created a file named adblocker. Used the adb shell to ran it. I needed to remount the system partition in order to move the script to /system/bin. (A google search can help here if you don't know how to do it). Short version: it installed and ran Ok.
Step 4. On my first attempt (second, third, and maybe fourth actually), I installed apps from the Google Store. Eventually I ended with the reboot loop again. So in the end I opted for downloading the apk files of the apps I wanted to install (from apkpure.com) and did it manually (actually I used a for loop and adb in bash, but it counts as manually).
Step 5. That was it. Tested some apps and gave the tablet to my little monsters for further testing. The kids have been very happy playing around with the old tablet.
Additional considerations:
1. In my case I installed an app blocker so the children won't mess with anything important, microG settings and F-droid included.
2. I didn't install Google Play Games nor any games that depended on it. So the idea of me using the tablet to play was abandoned.
3. There are some apps that the old TF101's hardware cannot handle, so I uninstalled them as they crashed at start up.
Conclusion: TF101 is old but with this workaround it might live to fight more battles. Kids apps are simple, but they run (some Ok, some a bit slow). My kids learn and have fun with the old tablet, so mission accomplished!
Further considerations and remarks:
1. Updating apps is not a concern for me unless they stop running. If they run they do stay, otherwise I will check them manually and then decide.
2. No Google account was registered in the tablet. Store is there, but it is not used.
3. I installed some other apps aside from the children's ones, like the app locker, a file manager and things alike.
Good luck.
EDIT: Updated to Super Su SR5 (highly recommended) and added suhide-lite.
EDIT: Reboots restarted eventually. The solution was not installing microG nor Google apps, and therefore no store at all. I installed my kids' apps manually using adb. I also omitted Youtube kids. Tablet has been working fine for almost a week now.
Katkiss Kitkat with no gapps. Smooth like butter.
Workaround is to first flash with gapps, reboot and go through first time setup (skip wifi), then reboot into twrp, wipe system and flash without gapps, then reboot.
Reason is first time setup wont work without gapps for kk.
My detailed instructions in the timduru mm thread (kk was closed)
Yes. I can confirm (after multiple back and forth flashing) that Katkiss works perfectly w/o gapps.
Now w/o gapps how does one get the apps to install?
Edit : Looks like yalp store is the answer

You can look for your app's .apk file (e.g., apkpure.com), download it and use adb to install it.
I'm using katschmallow, no gapps. It has been very stable for a couple of months. I have microg installed, and a lot of apps from yalp are working OK. YouTube seems to be the culprit in making it bootloop. I've been using newpipe instead.
Works without gaps

I tried it as well and works well. I installed rom with the latest gapps (Jan 19th) and it has nice feature that you can disable "autoupdate apps" from upper right corner "three dots". Actually it was quite stable even with the gapps as long as you don't allow autoupdates.
Of course those apps, which are requiring Google play support won't work (mainly google made).
But many apps don't work with TF101 if you load the latest version so I found older versions from uptodown.com site as well other sites have old versions if you just search those.
Here are some apps and working versions. (some never might work as well but I did not have time to try furher)
Dropbox 18.2.2
Firefox 51.0.3
Uptodown 3.18
Chrome 49.0.2 (you need this if you want use your google account)
Mega 3.2.6.2.6
Spotify 8.4.0.534
OneDrive 4.12
Surprise was that the latest version of MS Outlook mail/calendar works

Do you guys happen to know how I can root my TF101? I have two and I want to see what my best options are to get this thing to work with youtube. Please let me know if these two tablets are still worth the trouble.
I have spent countless hours chasing my tail as ASUS SYNC isn't even online anymore and all the exe files aren't made for windows 10. I have two, I am a college student and I would like a tablet to play Youtube when I am eating, as I don't have a tv in the dinning room/table.
Thanks in advance.
I have not been able to get YouTube working on mine. I have katschmallow without gapps, and use newpipe for YouTube. Anything Google service related seems to boot loop the tablet.

Thanks for the quick reply. I guess I'll use it as a paper weight. On the plus side, I use my TF101s as a camera for the apt when I leave for school breaks, via Alfred. The video quality sucks, but at least it still has a little functionality.
It's not quite paperweight territory, but without support from Timduru it's becoming more and more crippled. I'm thankful for all of the years of service it has given.

You should try OGYoutube instead, it depends on microG. You can use your google account and you will also get rid of the ads.
Look for the apks at apkmirror (ogyoutube and microG for OGYT)
Update for anyone still using this device. I discovered that . apk files can be installed from the terminal emulator. I was using katschmallow without gapps but kept getting random reboots. I went back to KK, and it is blazing fast. No reboots so far. Anyway, when you flash KK without gapps, there is no good way to install apps. I placed the apps that I wanted to install on the external SD, and installed in terminal as follows.
su
cd extSdCard
ls
pm install packagename.apk
Edit:Firefox 51.0 still works on this device on KK and is the minimum version for adbock plus.
Hello sirs
from your post I assume that best ROM il KAT KISS MM without Google Gapps.
I already have this configuration, but too many apks ( I use APTOIDE like market) do not works.
I would like to try a ROM based on original Firmware ( ANDROID REVOLUTION HD 3.6) . do you know if Google works with original FW ?
thanks
