Help please....phone bricked? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions & Answers

basic rundown.....im rooted (was)..... today i made a phone call and ironically the xda app kept crashing and asking me to send a report....which i denied. Then it just kept popping back up, i then went to end the call and couldnt even access my "phone" app, i therefore restarted the phone. when it it booted back up, it was stuck on verizon boot logo, with a vibrate then double vibrate....but no advancement. I therefore accessed the factory reset, wiped my phone, and it booted successfully. However, the bare minimum apps were installed, not even a browser app, no chrome or anything...i therefore decided to return to stock following the odin/vzw files and encountered a major problem.....my phone wont accept the odin flash, i keep getting an error. my phone continues to boot into recovery and continuously fails odin flashes....any ideas???? my phone at the moment either gives me and update failed screen and to use the verizon update software or can enter "download" mode which then refuses to flash any stock image in odin.

Try using another version of odin, usb cable, etc...

I had a similar issue, I had to download the Software Upgrade Assistant tool from verizon to get it to work
I think this is the direct link you'll want
edit: if you put it in download mode, it should show up under repair, relevant link

Solved: the Verizon software repair assistant got me back up and running. Many thanks.

Fairly serious problem after Kies firmware update

OK, so today I decided to update my Galaxy S firmware via Kies as it was now available for Vodafone customers. All seemed to go ok, got to the final screen on Kies where it says completed, phone will reboot when firmware update completed. However it never did reboot, the menu and back button lights just lit up and stayed on for ages.
Now the phone would only boots to the Galaxy S start up screen and get stuck.
I decided to go into recovery mode and do a factory reset which sort of helped. The phone boots up into Andorid but only to the 'Welcome to GT-I9000, touch the Android to begin'. Except the 'force close' messages keep popping up saying XXXX process has stopped unexpectedly, and pressing the 'touch android to begin' doesn't do anything (more force close errors pop up). After a while the force close errors stop, but pressing 'the Android' does nothing.
If I plug the USB cable in it is recognised and I can choose Samsung Kies/Mass Storage mode on the phone. However, if I press Samsung Kies and fire up Kies it just gets stuck on 'connecting'. Nothing shows up on on the phone though.
Any ideas on what to do next? Flash firmware with Odin?
Any help would be much appreciated, really don't want to have to send it back to Vodafone
Have you tried unplugging the battery from the device and leaving it for a while and restart it. It may work out....
I've flashed it to JM8 now and is working okish.
I installed the project voodoo lag fix and now I can't sign into my gmail or facebook account which is slightyly irritating . Worked fine before, any ideas why it comes up with "Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server"?
I'm using wifi to connect to the internet, full signal, worked fine in same place before etc. Internet works fine so it suggests the connection is ok. Any ideas?
I had this issue yesterday and resolved it by doing a factory reset in the settings app. For some train the recovery mode reset doesn't reset the google link..
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
lex_87, did you ever resolve this? I've been having a tonne of issues since upgrading to the Vodafone-provided update that was released on 19/09, and after getting fed up with my phone crashing/panicking all the time, did a a factory reset from within the Settings menu. And now I've got exactly the same issue as you.
Really not sure what to do. If I flash it myself I'll end up voiding the warranty and if I send it back to Vodafone, I won't get a replacement for weeks, if not months, as they're out of stock.
Any help would be appreciated...
You need to re-enter your APN settings to get data to work again, Google for vodafone's APN settings.

Hi,
I'm having the same problem, but I didn't manage to enter in to the setup mode in order to do a factory reset. Can you please tell me how can I access factory reset? The phone never recover from a black screen and a few buzz.
Thanks.

[Q] Flash I9505 without going in download mode?

Hi,
I've got my good old 9505 I bought right at release on which the Volume UP button (or more likely whatever hardware it's connected to, as the button itself works perfectly normally) has become stuck pressed.
That causes a little problem - I can't enter Download mode anymore (Normal power up enters recovery due to the stuck key, Vol Down cancels Recovery and boots normally).
I had a custom ROM and recovery on it, and in order to send it for repair I obviously want to put it back to stock status, so I have reflashed a stock MI8 image I found using ODIN, using the custom recovery's "Reboot in Download mode" command.
Now the problem is I have bad luck and likely had an incompatible modem, and after booting even with cache/data wiped I have the Samsung keyboard crashing constantly and WiFi won't work.
Of course restoring the stock image wiped my custom recovery, so I can't use the same trick to get back into Download mode and reflash another modem.
I can't use Mobile ODIN or reboot menus with a "Reboot Download" option, as those requires root, but... rooting needs Download mode.
I can connect to Kies, but for my region it unfortunately says the current ROM is already the latest.
Does someone have an idea I didn't think about?
is there a way to reboot to download mode via usb debugging?/adb shell or something like that?
I found something that suggested it, however while I've painfully been able to go enable USB debugging (with the UI that locks and the "Samsung Keyboard has stopped" messages that appear between nearly every tap) adb devices returns nothing. Maybe the same issues cause debugging to fail too...
make sure that all instances of kies are stopped and also try reinstalling the drivers?
OK, found an app called "Kingo Android Root" that works from the PC through adb, and managed to root it again. It took some time to connect, but once it did it went through the procedure OK.
Then I could transfer the apk for "Quick Boot" to the phone through MTP, and its reboot menu worked to reboot in Download mode
Got a new modem flashed, and WiFi is back. The Samsung keyboard is still crashing every 5 secs, but I'll just try reflashing the OS, never know...
now that you can get to download mode, you can just restore everything back to stock? no? should fix any fc's you're getting, unless they are related to the physical fault with the volume up button being stuck?
Yes, it's just a matter of finding the right stock ROM... :\
OK, the MKF ROM for my country I found here works perfectly fine.
Issue closed then, hope this will serve other people who might end up in a similar situation
Now to see how the service center reacts to a stock config but with Knox flag set...
good luck, and don't forget to let us know how you get on with the service centre/knox situation.
Good news, received my S4 after a one week turnaround (shipping included), and it was repaired under warranty even with the Knox bit set and me having dismantled it (thanks Sammy for not putting "warranty void" stickers, pretty much the first manufacturer I see who doesn't!)

5.0 bricked my phone

Saturday evening I got a notification saying 5.0 lollipop was available for my s5 so I eagerly downloaded the update. During the update my phone froze and crashed (had this happen twice earlier in the day) and it rebooted to the update screen. Once the update finished installing the phone rebooted like normal and sat at the verizon screen for about 2 minutes before crashing again. This caused the phone to enter a boot loop that ended up making an open padlock symbol appear on the start screen. After this appeared it took me to a screen that said "System software not authorized by Verizon has been found on your phone". After getting this error I tried using Odin and Kies to reinstall 4.4 on my device. The install was successful but after the phone booted it was freeze and crash again leading to another boot loop and a "recovery booting" message in the top left screen. It now either boots back to the System software screen or loops until it hits the recovery menu. Is there any way to fix this or did Verizon brick my phone?

Still boots with the custom rom padlock and freezes on the verizon screen
Try pulling the battery. I've read where that's helped some people get it to boot.

Ok, so I am safe now. I was able to flash a stock NK2 Kernal.
Pull the battery on the phone. Hold down Vol. Down, Home, and Power and go to download mode. Plug in the phone, and open Odin. Flash the kernal.
Reboot and you should be ok. This just worked for me.

I tried flashing the kernel, it booted and I got an error that said "processing system isn't responding" and it crashed back to the verizozn software screen.

If Kies doesn't work, try Verizon Update Tool. It also has a repair tab and may help you get back to stock.

Instead of flashing only the kernel, flash a stock, unrooted retail version of KK 4.4.4.

This worked for me as well, thanks! For anyone that wants to know, I used "NK2_Stock_Restore.tar.md5" specifically. You can get it from this thread labeled as "NK2 Stock Restore".

S4 stuck at RECOVERY BOOTING..... loop

I seem to be another victim of this issue. I was attempting to update my recovery (TWRP 2.6 installed) on my Verizon S4 via TWRP's app. It failed, so I figured I might try it from recovery. I attempted to boot into recovery, but it is stuck at the Samsung "custom" screen and the blue "RECOVERY BOOTING......" text is in the top left corner. I can leave the device alone for several minutes and it never goes into recovery. It does get very hot though, and occasionally it will reboot on its own. If I hook it up to my PC and then put in the battery, it will vibrate as if it is going to boot, then it vibrates again in 3 seconds and does this endlessly with nothing coming up on the screen. Without being able to get into recovery or have my desktop recognize the device, I'm not sure what to do. Any ideas before I chuck this brick?
Are you able to get into download mode (volume down, home button, power)? If you're able to, the device is not bricked and, using Odin, you can update TWRP to 2.8.4.
I've found that the app isn't working all that well. For the last few updates I've had to use Odin to update TWRP.

Ah ha, you are correct. I actually tried a variation of this (I think with volume up?) but it just attempted to go into recovery again. At the download screen I just told the phone to boot into the OS and all seems well. I'll look into updating TWRP via Odin and see if I have any joy, but at least I have a working phone again. Thanks for the help.:good:
When you update, do NOT try to use TWRP 2.8.5.0. It's bugged on the S4. Use 2.8.4.0 instead.
Thanks, good advice!
Looks like my recovery is toast. Doing some research, I never used Odin as my phone had the old MDK baseband. Sites tell me not to use Odin, so I followed the instructions on TWRP's site using Terminal Emulator and 2.8.4.0: http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/181 Everything seemed to go well, so I attempted to reboot into recovery, but now I get some warning/error about unauthorized software, turn off your phone and take it to Verizon, etc.
Sounds like I need to try again, but I'm not sure what my options are now.
I didn't even see you had a Verizon S4 until you mentioned it. Verizon encrypts the bootloader as a matter of course, and thus installing TWRP is not possible. You should however be able to restore the official firmware with Odin, and from there, follow the root guides at http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-verizon to get yourself back up and running.
mine get to the point where i select volume up, i see the android bot and message do not turn off target, and it shuts down. what do i do?

Help Exposed Installation gone wrong

Hey, so I have had my phone rooted for a long time. I have a Galaxy S5 6.0.1 Marshmallow.
I decided I wanted to get Framework installed so I downloaded the right files and flashed it in TWRP.
My phone took way longer than 10 min to reboot into system so I thought I was stuck in a bootloop and decided to run my phone through TWRP again.
I tried rebooting but that didn't work. I have my phone's backup saved onto a micro SD so I did a factory reset and then tried rebooting.
I got past the rebooting logo and actually got to my lock screen where it asks for my password.
From there, I've been getting spammed with 3 different messages, one saying that IMS service is down, com.sec.vsimservice is down, and WfcService is down.
After I press ok to all 3 of the messages, my phone is still in the lock screen asking for my password but the phone doesn't recognize that im touching the screen to type. After letting the phone stay like that for a few minutes, the lock screen that asks for my password goes away and all I can see is my wallpaper background (no notification panel either) but now the phone recognizes me touching the screen ( I know that because the LED lights up for the windows button and back button )
So basically I decided to go into TWRP and flash my recovery that I had saved on the microSD.
After that didn't work, I've just been going through a series of factory resetting my phone and wiping Dalvik files and then flashing my recovery. My phone is getting unrealistically hot too.
Btw I never downloaded the Exposed Uninstaller from the forum so I tried downloading it onto my pc and then sending the file over to my phone through download mode using Odin so that I could flash the uninstaller through my TWRP but that didn't work because the PDA in Odin does not recognize the uninstaller file.
Please, I really need help and thanks to anyone who tries, it would mean a lot if someone could figure out what I can do. Thanks.
Since you've tried restoring your backup and everything seems to have failed (it sucks, I know) you should try to install a completely stock firmware which you can download from here: http://live.samsung-updates.com/index.php?device=SM-G900I Just make sure you select your exact phone model from the dropdown menu at the top right side as you didn't mentioned which of the 40 S5s you have lol. And after you flash stock firmware and successfully boot up try to restore your backup. If it's still bugged - flash stock again and start off fresh. Let me know how it turns out. I'll help with installing xposed later as well, first let's get your phone running again
