Is China spying on U.S. Mate 9 users? - Huawei Mate 9 Guides, News, & Discussion

I posted something similar on AC forums but I wonder if this forum draws a more technical crowd that might have further insight. Here is what i posted with some additional comments based on what I've heard over there....
One thing that did stick in the back of my head was this is an all Chinese phone without Google's involvement and I wondered about whether or not it would send my personal information back to China similar to the fiasco with the Blu phones. I installed Spy Monitor to see what my phone was communicating with. I have seen these communications with Hong Kong twice. Sure it could be some other app and completely innocent.
I could just be paranoid. Anyone out there able to interpret this? Have any thoughts?

A good point was made by an AC user that made me feel a little better....
I would still trust the mate 9. But "trust" is a fluid term here. I think Huawei's increased global profile, and it's partnership with Google for the recent Nexus, might...*might*...Be enough to temper the really egregious spyware activity from this company. Especially from their flagship phone.
Maybe it's just me, I see a difference when the spying is coming from a country like China compared to the mass cataloguing of data within the U.S. I'm patriotic about my privacy violations.
I just turned on my 6P and I'll leave it on to see if it shows any similar activity. Just for kicks.
So any thoughts?

That IP belongs to Baidu search engine. I'm guessing it was accessed for weather or something like that. To really be sure you can try to capture the actual packets with wireshark. It's on Port 80, so it's not encrypted most likely.

Thanks!
This is exiting my realm of expertise. Would I see sensible information using Wireshark or would it be random numbers and letters that make no sense?

It wouldn't be all that hard to make sense of, but setting it up could be a bit of a pain.

I'm not seeing an android app for this. Are you suggesting I set this WIndows app up on my home network and attempt to capture the traffic going from my phone and out through my router and to the net?

Er, what? Froyo does local searches?

Hi,
I was playing around with the new (fast, fast!) global search from froyo and noticed that when I type a whole word that might correspond to a business (e.g. restaurant, bakery) I get an entry for it. The funny thing it even shows the rating and the phone number, and when clicked gives me the option to call, show on map and even add to contacts!
How crazy is that? Did you know it?
Mine doesn't do that. Is there a preference or something?

It only does it using the new google searching widget. It works pretty well actually, even in a little village like mine
Yeah it's a great little feature, will come in handy for sure.
All I can say is, wow!
Doesn't seem to work for me in Norway.
I think you have to check an option in the privacy settings for it to work, but you don't need the search widget: pressing the search button in the home screen gives the same results.
Anyway, does it happen to you that the results it gives are farther away than other existing ones? E.g. you get a bakery two km away, when you know there is one at a hundred metres and it appears in the maps too.

It doesn't work that way, it doesn't do complex searches (e.g. you picking the place). The second try should have worked, though. If I search "pizza" I definitely get a local result.
Here's a screenshot I took last night, I just checked and it works for "pizza" too:

If anyone is interested and willing to take on such a huge challenge, PM me and we'll go about setting up a meeting (Face to Face or Netchat) with the guy.
Hopefully someone here can help him out.
IMO i dont think youre looking for an android develroper . You're kinda looking for a person that can set up a windows exchange server . My dad does this kinda stuff . but hes not an android developer.
he knows how to setup a server for a business like this i thinkk

Hmm.. think your right, Unless the [OP] already has a working server otherwise an android dev
I'm sure he doesn't give a care what it is that someone is called or what job title someone needs to be called. He just needs it done. So if anyone can do this, let me know and we'll get things rolling.
Figured I'd hit the XDA forums first seeing has how you guys can do just about anything. He's giving it one more week, and then opening the job up to a firm. If you want the cash, respond.

Another proof: Apple is spying on you!

Ok, this ain't really a developpement post [sorry for that!] but I'm sure that, like for me, it will makes you real glad to be an Android user.
I kindly invite your to read this thread:
http://technaute.cyberpresse.ca/nou...urdhui-sur-cyberpresse_267_article_ECRAN1POS2
it is in french, but if you like to call yourself a dev, then I'm sure you know how to use a webpage translator .
In short: iphones and ipad are kepping unsecured data of all your geo-localisation on your phone and any computer that you synch to.
Isn't this hughe and nice of them !!??
So attention all of you cockold of this world, Apple with all it's kindness is making your life easier to confirm your status.
hehehe!
Big writeup today on Tech Republic as well. If iOS was open source they could rip it out like when Sprint CIQ was ripped out of the Epc 4G. Thanks K0nane!

You gon be disappointed:

Is that true? Does anyone know where is that database stored in Android?
And even if this data is being recorded, wouldn't it be possible to fix it as Android is open source?
Its stored on google's servers and yes you can turn this off on the android so none of the applications can track you! Killing your gps/3g/and data means they cant track you there are even anti gps apps that will tell them your in some other country. So just because some apps can doesnt mean they always do like on iOs. Its all about what apps you have installed really and what they're doing the easiest way to see this is with adb....adb logcat command while your phone is plugged in usb. Youll see google services running calling on your gps location and data collection you can see the code its plain as day!
Heres an old ss i had of what it looks like!↓↓↓

What the guy said below me is not true but hey whatever you want to believe... They store your data because its worth money plain and simple...
Its worth money to marketing and analytical firms! Google knows more about you than YOU do!
They know your darkest secrets whatever you typed into google they know...
They've even developed software to collect and categorize all of it... So saying that Google is the devil LoL

Part of the screen is being cut off on some games/apps

Certain games and apps on the Essential Phone have the issue of part of the image being cropped out of the frame. I've already tried using the Essential Layout Whitelist Editor, but nothing changes. Some screenshots of the issue are below:

Ace Attorney Spirit of Justice
Like I said, the Essential Layout Whitelist Editor does nothing to fix this. Is there any other way?
I've only had that problem when adding to whitelist. Even then if I rotated the phone, it would be fine. Only cropped when turned the wrong way. I know, shouldn't matter, fixed soon I hope.

Rotating also does not help, whitelisted or not. In Ace Attorney in particular, there's a giant border on the left, and the game is cut off on the right. Rotating the device around (and every which way) doesn't change it. It's always cut off on the right.

Did you try unlisting everything including systems files? Could be a system setting that was whitelisted that's doing it and not the app itself. Do you also have the navigation hidden? I would uncheck all the navigation including systems settings and see if that help.
I have an issue with some games being stretched and looking weird. I don't know what whitelisting is or how to do it.

Well I unchecked everything from both Fill Status and Hide Navigation. Nothing changed. Then for good measure I checked everything on Fill Status, everything on Hide Navigation, and then both together.
No combination of settings seem to fix the problem.
Sounds like a app im compatibility
Well, I suppose if this isn't fixed by Essential the phone's going back to Best Buy. I've only found a handful of apps that do this (all by different developers), but I'm sure there's more. And considering how small the audience of this phone is, I seriously doubt any app developers will be putting out dedicated fixes for it.
It's not really something I'm willing to put up with on a $700 phone.
I get the impression that this problem is an app incompatibility issue. But is there anything we can do about it if the app does not update to address the issue
I notice this happens to me sometimes on clash of clans, i thought it had someting to do with having a certain notification open wihch i just restart the phone and it fixes it.

Any Ideas Please?

This is the screen on my junsun v1 pro when I go into the trip computer on my Peugeot 208 1.4HDi. The gear icon (ringed in red) asks for a code when I tap on it and I cannot find a code for this anywhere. I have no idea what it's for since the other 2 screens just have a clear button to reset the trip memory. I assume there are some settings but since I can't find the code, I have no idea. If anyone knows what this code is I would be grateful!!
[edit] I have tried all the obvious ones: 8888 8878 1234 5678 etc etc etc

I assume this means that no-one here knows, or can hazard a guess. I posted the question in the wild hope that someone might have the same setup and know what the code is. To be honest, if you don't know what the code could be then I doubt that the system info and Mcu version will make any difference unless you have a magic key to extract it.
I don't have access to the car just now but, if it will make any difference I'll get the info when I do...

Usually it's better to post your question in a thread related to your head unit because many users will get an email with your question.
Most users will not read a thread with the generic title "any ideas please?" because in most cases it only contains a thrown down question asked by a lazy user.
Please install this tool

The app will show the technical name of the app (package) and the technical name of the screen (activity).
Package name should be com.ts.MainUI but activity name needs to be provided by yourself to allow further investigation.

It means you haven't provided enough information and crystall ball not working. Perhaps the seller might be a better choice for support.
Looks like the question wasn't important enough to provide further information.
Sometimes I wish to be an admin with the authorization to delete whole threads.

Oh dear.
It would have been useful if someone with the same setup had happpened upon the question and know the answer. Every other feature works fine so I didn't expected someone to put in days of work to solve the issue and, honestly, I'm not that worried about it.
FWIW I have not had access to the car since last I posted the original question, so have not been able to get more info. I realise it was probably very rude of me not to say that before but the post had dropped down so many pages I assumed it would fade into obscurity, like an 80s rock group.
I don't really want to get into an argument here, TorstenH, but are you a little bitter? Do you feel the world is treating you unfairly? It's the only reason I can see for that last post from you. I don't spend a lot of time on this forum and when i went looking for my post it was, something like, ten plus pages down so, as i said, I assumed it would be forgotten. Lighten up.
