AOD kills S5's display - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys!
Everybody knows there are some roms, which have fully working Always On Display. I'm also using one of that roms, but I faced with a problem. Before the night I used the phone with the lowest brightness, and it worked fine. For the night I left switched on the AOD. After I woke up I saw that my phone's screen is flickering on the lowest brightness.
This is my second S5 dead like this...

this might be the answer to my query about why ive been seeing so many dead/dying displays as of late. Using AOD on a display that wasnt built for it is never a good idea. The AMOLED designed for this phone is over 3 years old (design-wise) not a good idea to torture it like one would with an AOD

Wow! Nice finding, thanks for sharing. Sorry for your losses. I'm glad I've never flashed those ROMs.

Let me give you a short and simple answer.
Stop worrying about burn in. There are people here who have the original Note with perfect screens.
Screen issues have been mostly resolved with the newest Super AMOLED panels. You can use facebook as long as you wish, if you do encounter any problems take the device back to Samsung and they should give you a replacement unit for use.
Enjoy your Note!

If you want your screen to be constantly ON for 1-1.5 years then AMOLED is not for you. But if you get something like 4 hours of screen time / day then you should be more than fine.
Brightness also matters a lot - IMHO current AMOLED can not last more than 365 * 8 hours at absolute max brightness without showing serious burn-in, but CAN last that much on auto.

I assume you haven't read everything I wrote, I use my phone max 3 hours in a day that to not constantly, I use it in short periods and I guess I use only 2 hours 3 hours is still way more than I actually use but still just the estimate time also I only use max brightness outdoors that too very rarely or else I keep it on auto.

Screen Brightness Dims when battery is below 50%. any reason why ? how to fix it ?

Hi.
so I noticed something with my Oneplus Two. I am not sure if its because of the kernels or its like that form the start.
my wife has HTC ONE M9+, when my battery is full or above 50%, my screen is brighter than her screen. we use the google page from the browser to compare colors. however, when my battery is lower than 50% ( I tested it today when it was around 40% or 38% battery remaining)
and her screen was brighter than mine.
I tried all three kernels available. and all the same results. and the auto brightness is already unchecked.
any idea why this is happening ? the problem is I don't have the official kernel and I don't want to format my phone or whatever to get the stock kernel to test this again.
the only reason I actually went ahead and installed a custom kernel is because in my eyes the colors of the phone was a lil washed out " true to life but not to my liking" as I am used to more color options.
any reason why this is happening and is there a way to fix this ?
at one point I am not even sure this has something to do with the battery. it might be something to do with the phone heating ? I honestly cant tell. but feeling the phone from the back its not even warm.
thanks in advance to anyone who can actually help.
i did more testing and i still cant figure out where exactly is the problem.
my phone is now fully charged and if i go to twrp to install a kernel or something, the screen goes a lil dim again as the phone gets warm. so maybe heating has something to do with it.
is there a way to stop the phone from dimming even if its get warm ?
So I understand why you're asking the question, and it's not a bad question to ask, but you're comparing two vastly different devices.
Everything from the screen type(LCD3 vs LTPS LCD), to screen resolution (1440p vs 1080p), to processor(Mediatek Helio vs Snapdragon 810), to Android version (5.0.2 vs 5.1.1), to ROM/kernel (SenseUI vs OxygenOS) is different.
In short, you're not comparing Apples to Apples.

yeah I am not comparing screens. I just want to know why the screen dim. upon further inspection. it seems the dimming happens when I restart the phone. it needs some time then it will go up in brightness again to be higher than my wife phone.
I am no longer sure what causes this behavior. heating? restarting the phone ? phone battery ?

Autobrightness is controlled through the OS and the ambient light sensor. When you reboot the phone, the screen comes on, the OS checks the light conditions through the sensor, then adjusts the brightness accordingly--either up or down based on what the OS believes is the optimal condition. You can see it in action when you hold the phone under a bright light, then suddenly turn off the light or move away from it. While under the light, the device will increase brightness to 100%, then will dim once you move away.
There is definitely some battery savings in the way autobrightness behaves as well, since the Display is normally the number one consumer of battery power--as it should be, since it's the main way you interact with the screen or get information from the device.
In any which case, you know you can set the brightness manually through the settings, right? If you turn off autobrightness and set it manually, the phone shouldn't adjust anymore.

Faulty Light Sensor?

Has anyone had any problems with the light sensor on their Nexus 6P?
I've noticed that it works fine if the light is shining directly onto the device, but it's not so good at picking up ambient light.
If I put my Nexus 6P and Nexus 9 flat on my desk at work, I get a reading of 225 lux on the Nexus 9 and 226 lux on the Nexus 6P - basically the same.
But if I pick up both devices and stand them upright on the desk, the Nexus 9 shows 90 lux and the Nexus 6P shows just 36 lux.
Most of the time this isn't a problem, but if I'm using it somewhere where the light levels are borderline and change a lot (like on a bus or train at night) I find that the device ends up changing the brightness a lot because there's not much light directly shining on the screen.
I've been using the free App "Sensors" from the Play Store to check the light levels - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.calintat.sensors
Has anybody noticed anything similar? I'm running stock on build MDA89D (not had any OTAs yet).
I am seeing the same behavior with my 6P. Borderline light conditions at all, and the brightness is constantly changing.

Could you check the readings you get from the light sensor when it's happening?
There are lots of apps that will let you see the sensor readings.
I noticed this last night in a dark room with a few lamps on -- the brightness would just randomly increase and decrease.
Yep, was sitting on the couch last night reading in a moderately lit room and the screen would randomly get bright and then dim again. Got so annoyed that I turned off adaptive brightness and will just adjust the screen manually. My biggest complaint with this awesome phone.
Nothing to add except that I also turned off adaptive brightness as it wasn't functioning properly and was pretty annoying.

Would you be able to try and get some light sensor readings in that same location?
I'd be very interested to know if it's the same cause as mine.
Same thing here with the low light. It kept going bright and slowly back to dim where it should be.
Same issue. This and being virtually unable to use the phone in direct sunlight are my only two gripes.
Watching the sensor as I move around it bounces all over the place where as with my S5 the sensor readings appear much more constant.
Same issue, I wonder if it's software or faulty device
I checked out the light sensor In the lux app as I was having a similar issue, I can see the sensor go from 1 lux to 11 even though it's in a pretty dim room at night, it keeps changing...
Same for me.

+1 for this issue, when playing games in a brightly lit room, my brightness on the phone keeps constantly changing, even though I always hold my phone in the same position while playing.

Would you have any source on this, I'd love to get this better as it's pretty god damn annoying. I'm sure it can be fixed with a kernel or xposed module.

Because it's an lcd, it doesnt actually burn in. It's image retention or ghosting. I'm having the same problem. Lowering the brightness will help. I use automatic brightness and it works great. I've heard that using an app [Twilight] that can put a filter on the screen might help. Apply 5% filter for 30% brightness, and for every 10% brightness add another 5% filter. Example: 30% brightness, 5% filter, 40% brightness, 10% filter, 50% brightness, 15% filter, and so on. I don't know how much it will help but if it does that's always a good thing.

The maker of WETA has found if you lower the values of the screen just barely through KCAL compatible kernel it can stop the ghosting completely.
But that means you have to use a custom kernel that supports KCAL so if you aren't rooted you pretty much have to deal with it. It goes away eventually.

I believe off the top of my head it was just lower RGB by 10 points is all it took. Ineed to double check but try that in mean time

Try setting them to the lower values he personally uses and see. He says he likes it darker. I've noticed brightness seems to affect quite drastically on my end

I also thinks the same that brightness is key issue which is promoting ghosting
And auto brightness seems to work a lil bit

I just got my LG V20 US996 Friday afternoon & of course tested it at full brightness most of the time but will start using automatic brightness more regularly if it really helps prevent such eventual screen issues, I just noticed today for the first time on my Moto X Pure, which also has an IPS display, what looks like burn in that appeared suddenly not gradually..?
How common is (IPS vs other screen tech) burn in-ghosting-image retention with the LG V20/US996 & best ways to avoid it's if not really totally repairable? -Thnx
Finally i fixed it, AlhamduLillah!
.... How?
Supposedly the burn in for LCD displays is rare, part of why I bought the v20 in the first place. Except it's not rare, seems to happen more than it should. I ended out sending mine in for repair, barely still in warranty. I suggest those of you with issues and warranty do the same.

How? You can't just say you fixed it and then be silent about.
I'm having ghost issues as well now.
Is it the heat that makes the problem for the screen to do it? If that is the case one more reason to use a big battery like the mugen 9300 battery which keeps the heat of the phone down tremendously. Sadly iv changed back and forward on the stock battery and my big mugenpower - and now have the problem of ghost. I do mostly have my screen on 100% light all the time as one is not even able to adjust the auto function - I ordered the phone at 2017-Marts-09 and the issue has just raised in the last couple of weeks. I bumped up from 2 minutes turn on time to 5 minutes which seemed to be the time I began to get the ghost issue, which seems to be getting worse - but that could just have been a coincident.
Its not a big issue as such but it is still a little annoying having it around.
If it is an heat issue with the LCD - had I known I would just have used my big Mugenpower battery 9300 mAh all the time which keeps the phone at an stable 21-22 celsius degrees all the time. Stock battery sometimes fly over 40 Celsius when working.
It seemed there is a one year warranty on the phone but I'm not sure if it is actually worth doing anything in that regards.

The thread starter seems retarded for me sir.
I tried without success to use the 1 year warranty and sent my phone in TWICE to LG. Both times they did nothing but wipe the phone and claimed they fixed it.
I ended out going through my carrier which sent me a refurb phone, but it looked new. I would recommend anyone with similar issues do the same. You can change the colors of the screen and it improves what you can and can't see, but the burn-in is permanent.

Screen-On high brightness issue

Hi Guys,
what I found really terribly annoying is (I guess a bug) a bug related to the screen brightness.
When you switch on the phone - especially when having it next to the bed at night or in the morning, the screen goes to full or at least high brightness for 1-2s.
This is in my opinion quite awful while you get blinded like crazy when it happens. I usually have it on the charger at that time - so I don't know if it happens if not on the power-cord.
Can anyone confirm this on their own device? And is there any workaround?
I got a Porsche Design one, but I guess this issue is persistent on all Mate 9 Pro.
Regards,
maeffjus
