ZUK Z1 ZUI 2.3 Enable RECENT and BACK button instead of UTOUCH - Zuk Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
So I used ZUI 2.3 for a bit and using DEVELOPER MODE you can enable the hardware keys to be used. But the left hardware key which was used as RECENT APPS key in the COS/CM/AOSP is used as MENU which is really not useful to me. Does anybody have an idea as to how to change the hardware key binding? I heard there is a file in which values can be changed once you have rooted the phone. I wish to know the details.

Don't have ZUI installed, if you have "Settings->Buttons" you can change the HW keys from this option.

But all I could do was reassign to HOME button in the UTOUCH settings of ZUI. I want the solution for ZUI 2.3.
I am going to try this: (Button Remapper No Root)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.irishin.buttonsremapper&hl=en
EDIT:
Tried the app. RECENT working perfectly on the left hardware button. HOME soft touch to actually working like HOME isn't working flawlessly. But will do. So people who want the capacitive buttons like COS on the ZUI 2.3 should install that app and configure it like that. I am still looking for a better solution. Cheers!

There is no button option under setting... Menu and back key option is in developer settings.. I do enabled it.. But how to enable soft touch home by just a single tap...

Two files specifically generic.kl and fpc1020tp.kl located in system /usr/keylayout are needed to be edited.
With the help of any root browser, simply open the generic.kl with a text editor and scroll to the 'key 158' and change the attribute from default 'BACK' TO 'HOME'. Similarly, open the fpc1020tp.kl and do the same modification.
Save both files and reboot to notice the change.
Bingo

Start button without using Stylus?

I'm probably missing something obvious but on my XDA Mini S I don't appear to be able to press the "start" button on the today screen via a hard button (used to be centre button on my old XDAIIs) without having to get the stylus out.
I'm sure we're both missing something, 'cus I concur.
However, if you find yourself desperate you can install my program VJKeypress (on my website) and use the command line 91 to pop the start menu. Make a shortcut and assign it to a hardware key.
V
i just slide the keyboard out a bit about .75cm and the start key on the keyboard is exposed, press it and VOILA!! hahaha, yah i thought the keyboard wouldn't work unless its out all the way but it does
i use my finger.

If God wanted me to pull the stylus out everytime, he wouldn't have given me fingers! also anything to hand (as long as gentle) ie a real pen (nib withdrawn or the ink might mark the screen), screwdriver, key etc.
Also screen protector so you dont damage anything
I made this for using on my i-mate k-jam.
After installation you can use left software key to Start
Why do you want to do this easy thing in such a complex way? Just open Settings, click Buttons and assign <Start Menu> to any of your hardware buttons. I have configured Button 1 to open start menu (it's messaging bu default) and Button 2 for <OK/Close> (that button is IE by default).

Yup, me too.
By far the simplest solution.
I did try installing VITO ButtonMapper so I could have multiple apps mapped to the buttons but it has screwed up my 'soft buttons'.
DON'T USE IT, or Battery Pack Pro for that matter as it screwed up the whole PDA.

i had the same problems with vito buttonmapper. toggling buttonmapper on and off a few times seemed to fix it. not very good i know but it works perfectly now.
I used to set the Comm button to act as the start button. Don't do that anymore these days because i needed the quick button to the Comm manager. Thank god for fingers
I still bind the memo/speech button on the right to the OK/Close button at the top right button. Found it easier to use when typing the the keyboard or in normal mode.
All well least it wasn't me being dim! thanks for all the suggestions but just don't have a spare button to remap.
You'd think that they would have bound the Today screen "Start" function to a press of the directional button as it doesn't do anything else when on the today screen(as it was on the Blue Angel), but maybe that's just too logical!
assigning START menu to a button doesn't work when u have tomtom running. The menu pops up and just disappears again. It works in most of other apps though.
Got it!!!!
Just discovered that holding down the left soft key for about 1 second(rather than just tapping it to open calendar) opens the Start menu.
This is the feature of Smartskey
But I don't have smartskey installed so this must be a default function

Tried it here on my 2.24 ROM and it does not work. I press and hold for a second, also tried other varying lengths of time, and sure enough I always get the app the left soft button has been assigned.
Bizarre, works fine on mine - 2.21.4.1 Rom, 2.07 Radio UK XDA Mini S
Only apps I have installed are SPBBackup, Resco Explorer trial (expired) and TT5
Maybe a feature of the O2 UK Ext Rom?!?

Possible to re-map hold function of buttons?

I just finished installing PTTFix on my 8525 and I love it. (Thanks Sleuth255!!).
My question is this: is it possible to re-map the other 4 buttons to also add a hold function for them? i.e. When can add extra functions for holding the IE button, or the Messaging Button, or even the camera button.
If there's a registry hack for this or some way to do it please help me out, I've done numerous searches to no avail.
Thanks in Advance to anyone who can help.

it seems the reg hack can't do that for you. i've asked a similar question in a different thread and i was recommended using software such as AEButtonPlus or Vito Button Mapper. give it a try if you are interested.

Thanks, I tried Vito Button Mapper and this was exactly what I was looking for. The only bug was it changed and disabled my soft key functions in the today screen, but a simple settings change and soft reset was a quick fix.

When you go to Setting/Buttons to change your button functions, the configuration will be for default, from that drop down menu where you see "*<Default>, you need to select *<Today> and then it gives you the option to change your soft keys either back to original settings or whatever you want. The default setting seems to be <none> so thats why my soft keys did not even work before I changed them. I read about this in another thread and I was able to fix the problem.
As for the record function, I couldn't find any solution for that but I did encounter the same problem with it opening up notes.

8525 Ok button
Does the Vito ButtonMapper allow the changing of the "ok" button on the front of the 8525. I know the side "ok" button is supported, I am looking for the front ok above the End Call Button.

[Q] is it possible to change key functions?

I was wondering if there is a way to change key functions on note 3, for example: by pressing menu key we can see recent apps instead of menu
I would be thankful if anyone can suggest a solution to do this:good::laugh:

There are actually a couple different ways to do it...
You can used Xposed mod, with either Xposed Additions or MenuBeGone
(I've never used either of these methods...)
or, the way that I do it, manually edit the \system\usr\keylayout\Generic.kl file.
When I do it, I make the following two changes:
Change key 139 from MENU to BACK
Change key 158 from BACK to APP_SWITCH
Then I use button savior to add the menu for those things that need it...
(I'm coming from Nexus devices, so having the keys with back on the left, and app switch on the right is how I'm used to it...)
Ever wondered to use Google search ? Just saying.

Quick and easy answer:
Change key 139 from MENU to APP_SWITCH

[guide] disable capacitive buttons

I have seen a bunch of posts regarding the capacitive buttons and on screen navigation buttons. Love them or hate them, this is how you can turn them off.
I will leave that up to you on how to get onscreen Navy buttons.
As for turning off the capacitive buttons this is how I did it.
1.To eneble onscreen buttons follow this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/redm...mi-1s-t2950455
2. Download a root file explorer. Root Browser Lite --> http://goo.gl/b9ISW This is what I will use.
3.Load up Root Browser and navigate to system>usr>keylayout. We will be looking for a file called "atmel_mxt_ts.kl".
4. Select it and hit "Open as..." then "Text file" then "RB Text Editor"
5. Now we see this:
key 139 MENU
key 102 HOME
key 158 BACK
key 217 SEARCH
All you have to do is option out the keys you don't want to work with a #. So if you are like me and think the home button is fine, it will look like this.
#key 139 MENU
key 102 HOME
#key 158 BACK
key 217 SEARCH
6. When you have the ones you want optioned out just tap the little disk icon in the top right. It will ask for root rights, grant it, saved.
7. Now just reboot and DONE!
Tested on

As you can see, i made this post 2 years ago, you can give it a try, do a backup on TWRP first, if everythinggoes as you expected, that good. If not you know how to restore.

Remap Menu Button

Hello everyone!
I am currently using @Lenny Bard's SuperTouchWiz v5 ROM (https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/i9505-develop/rom-untouched-stock-rom-t3419034) and I'm loving the ROM except for one thing:
The leftmost key (to the left of the home button), once short-pressed launches the switch app, the long-press does the menu function (or settings? w/e). I want to swap the two as I am much used to a short press launching the menu function.
Can anyone help or lead me to somewhere which can help me solve my problem? I've been searching around but alas it seems that I cannot fully find the proper solution.
Except for Xposed, there isn't any way to do it. Except if you're a developer.

Unless there is a Magisk module that allows you to do it, then no.
Well here's what I did which turned the soft press to menu and long press to google search (altho what I wanted was for it to become app switcher but the long press on home button does that already so I guess it's fine )
On system/usr/keylayout/Generic.kl
I replaced Key 139 APP_SWITCH to MENU
and Key 217 to APP_SWITCH
