I have a 6P running 7.1.1 that has never been rooted or modified in anyway other than unlocking the bootloader. When I first got the phone I unlocked the bootloader so I could root the phone later if I wanted to without wiping the contents. I never rooted it.
Now Android Pay doesn't work with an unlocked bootloader. I would like to relock it. I understand that this will wipe my device. My question is, can I just press the button in NRT that says "OEM Lock" and it will take care of any flashing or resetting that needs to be done? I was more up to speed on all this when I had my Nexus 5, but the 6P hasn't really required me to get that involved.

Yes, OEM Lock will work, it just sends the ADB commands to your phone. Yes it will (unfortunately) factory reset the phone so to be sure to backup what you need, or at least be sure the Google backup feature is enabled for your apps.
Couldn't you just flash a custom kernel to get AP working again? For example, ElementalX has the bootloader check removed from the kernel. Use fastboot to boot into latest official TWRP without flashing it to the device and use that to flash EX kernel.

Thanks for the feedback. I knew I was going to lose everything, I just didn't want to brick it someway because it was 7.1.1.

Can you just root the N7, without loosing all your data?
I just want to be able to root it so I can use USB OTG properly.
With StickMount etc.
I don't want custom ROM's etc, just plain old root.
Any way to do this without loosing my apps/layout/data etc.

In order to "just" root, at a bare minimum, you will need to install su. In order to install su, you need to flash a custom recovery. To flash a custom recovery, your bootloader must be unlocked. Unlocking your bootloader erases everything unless you are already unlocked.
There might be a way but it involves relocking your bootloader before booting to the system. Booting the system in an unlocked state causes it to erase everything. All rooting operations can be done without booting the system and the last step would be to lock the bootloader. I have not tried this so no guarantees.
In order to root, you need to unlock your bootloader which will wipe your N7 app layouts etc. You can use adb to backup your apps and settings, or you can have a toolkit do it for you. Unfortunately, I can't help you with exactly how to backup. I didn't backup my settings when I unlocked my bootloader because I did it soon after I got my N7. I'm sure there is someone on here that's more knowledgeable in adb that can tell you the right commands.

Thanks both, what about the "All-In-One" nexus toolkit, I think that has a backup function and stuff.
And I guess this is a note to self "Root" before you customise and get all set etc.
I wouldn't even root it if I didn't want OTG but things have to be done I suppose.
Can any1 shed any light for the easiest way of rooting, and keeping my apps etc, because its such a ball-ache setting it up again

So, I got my Nexus 10 today. Super nice tablet. I wanted to root it and unlock the bootloader - unlocking the bootloader went fine, and I managed to flash CWM recovery. However, I forgot the enable USB Debugging under developer tools before I started all this..
My question now, how do I get this thing to boot again? And what is the smartest move now to root it?

If you're stuck in a boot loop after unlocking the bootloader, you may have to perform a factory reset from recovery. I had to do this to get mine booting again after I unlocked it. After the reset, everything worked great.
Of course, this is also assuming you unlocked your bootloader using fastboot , and not a toolkit. Solution might be the same though either way. May be worth a shot.
I also borked the original ROM after unlocking it, before I even flashed a custom recovery using the nexus toolkit (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2015467)
However, it is quite easy to reflash the software (you will loose the data though) through the same toolkit. After that I was able to flash TWRP recovery and CM10.1

I did it in a friend's phone, as she didnt want to lose data and I was lazy enough to not make a backup
just make sure adb is working properly...
My pc didnt recognize her phone immediately, adb was saying device was offline
after updating adb everything went ok

You can root it with motochopper and then use the bootunlocker app on the play store to unlock the boot loader without using data.
You can also do fastboot OEM unlock, and flash a recovery with fast boot. Clearing the cache in recovery should stop you losing data, theres a thread in the general section that tells you how to do this

While trying to upgrade my device to stock Android 7.1.1, I've forgotten to flash the boot image. All the other components have been correctly flashed (system, bootloader, radio, etc.), but I was not careful enough and I forgot to flash the boot image. The problem is I've decided to relock my bootloader (silly me) right afterwards and now the device is in a bootloop (as the current boot image comes from the custom ROM that was installed previously). Naturally, I cannot unlock my bootloader again as it says "OEM unlock is not allowed". Am I screwed? Any ideas on how to unlock my bootloader? After many years of flashing, this is the first time I'm in a real trouble. Thanks for your help!
Yup u may at a lose if the Bootloader is locked then I don't think u can flash anything that's why it's recommended not to Relock the Bootloader bc if you phone doesn't boot for some reason then there's nothing u can do but to RMA it if u still have warranty. If not then sell as parts

I can access the recovery and bootloader, but when I tried doing an ota update through recovery, (even with NUF26K) it kept failing.
I need to be able to flash a full factory image, which is why I need the bootloader unlocked.

Hi... Did the bootloop came from nowhere or what were you doing when it happened?
What error do you get when you sideload the ota?
Tried formatting cache or factory reset?
Edit: You can't downgrade with a locked bootloader.

You will not be able to unlock the bootloader without booting the OS and entering Dev Options to allow "OEM Unlocking". Now that the 7.1.2 beta is out, that OTA is worth giving a shot. I'd certainly try the suggestions above if the beta OTA fails. If a factory reset does not work, you may be able to fastboot format userdata and cache and try the OTA route again.

Completely gave up on this, but I will give you the error when I get home, it was somewhat contradicting.
I have a Oneplus X I am using now, but the screen size is killing my hands! Atleast I am not out a phone
Maybe there is a way to erase/corrupt the system and bootloader and ota with a 6.0.x? I didnt really like android N

If you erase or corrupt the bootloader then the phone is hard bricked (if it already isn't). I think you need an unlocked bootloader to do that anyways. Any flashing or erasing command in fastboot is going to need an unlocked bootloader. Even if you did somehow manage to delete the bootloader, without the phone being unlocked you can't flash a new one = hard brick.
If your phone is BL locked, you can't access Android, recovery doesn't help, you're mostly out of luck. Some people have said that using MSkips toolkit recovered their phones, but others had no such luck. There's a lot of people in the same boat as you. Others have tried calling Google about the issue despite their warranty status. Your phone is locked and a stock OTA took it out, from the sounds of it. Maybe they'll be willing to work with you. The worst they can do is say no, can't hurt to try. Good luck!

Never really like 7.x and it has been the only OS that has bricked my phone without being rooted.
Unfortunately you can neither use an OTA to downgrade nor flash a factory image without BL unlocked.
And I'm not sure that would help either. Your device corrupted itself for a reason and that might be the flash failing (which the Nougat update exhibited, but Nougat isn't the root cause probably). You could rather wait for a higher OTA and hope.
Any recovery log to post?
How old is the phone? 1 year?
