New HD 8? Threads for Google Play and Nova Launcher installation - Fire HD 8 and HD 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi! I just picked up a new HD 8 (2016) from Amazon on sale. The new HD 8 is noticeably quicker than the 2015 version, and a very nice tablet for light use. Web pages and apps load much faster now.
I spent far too much time trying to find the best threads for two mandatory mods I had to have: Installing Google Play, and replacing the Fire Launcher with Nova Launcher.
I finally found two good threads that had minimal stuff to install on my v5.3.1.0 HD 8, and both are working fine.
Of course, these are posts from other folks, and I don't take any credit for anything.
Google Play Installation: http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/how-to-install-google-play-store-fire-t3486603
Replace Fire Launcher with Nova Launcher using LauncherHijack: http://forum.xda-developers.com/ama...hijack-custom-launcher-t3409531?tag=823814-20
After you install the Hijacker, you will go to the Accessibility >> Services settings, and enable the Nova Launcher and Detect Home Button options.
I am blocking Amazon updates to my HD 8 by following option #4 here: http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-bloc...-the-amazon-fire-tv-or-fire-tv-stick/#opendns
I usually keep my HD 8 in Airplane Mode since I generally use my HD 8 as a book reader. It gives much, much better battery life, and prevents accidental Amazon updates if I'm not on my home network.

Using Kidoz on an Amazon Fire HAD 8 (2017)?!

Hello all, looking for some help here. I wanted to pick up a cheap tablet for my 6 year old and settled on the Amazon Fire HAD 8 after some super crappy ones like Dragon Touch. The best part about the Dragon Touch was it hard a kid's mode that only allowed apps toï be used that were ok'd by the parent. Unfortunately it seems as if the Fire HD 8 doesn't have any such features, or at least not in Canada.
I remember reading about something called Freetime BUT OF COURSE IT ISNT AVAILABLE IN CANADA UGH. So I got google services a d the play store going so I could use the Kidoz app, which is along the same lines as Freetime. I get to choose how she uses it, what apps she's using and all that.
The issue is when I go to setup "Extra safe mode and kid launcher" (meaning Kidoz starts right up after turning the device on) I'm not in to set it as the default launcher. It just won't let me!
Any ideas why? Or do any of you have a better suggestion for a full on kid's mode launcher that allows me to pick the apps?!
Thanks in advance

New Fire HD 8 (2020?)

Hi Guys
I ordered today my Kindle Fire HD 8 and think that it is a 2020 version but will see this earliest by tomorrow. (It was a Demonstration tablet so I hope that it's a earlier version).
I don't like Phones & Tablets which are spying on me so the first thing I will do is to skip the initial setup and disable all unnecessary apps and features. But I have some questions where I would be very happy if someone can answer them:
- Is the installed (stock rom) os a "normal" Andorid 9 which is customised by Amazaon?
- Will I be able to run an alternative App Store like F-Droid on this device? (I don't want to use the Goolag Store and Services)
- Is Nova Launcher the only Launcher or are there any alternatives available? Is it possible to run maybe KISS Launcher?
- I know that there is no Custom ROM for the Fire HD 8 at the moment - but is it maybe in work?
thanks

updated to fire os version 7.3.2.2...what did they do?

ok, thread title says it all..what'd they do to Fire Os this time?
...and while I'm thinking about it...anyone know where I can find patch/release notes for the fireos?
so far all i've noticed is that they removed paginated scrolling from folders
I noticed that SD cards formatted as extended storage (to install apps) are not working fine under kids profile. When you try to install an app that goes on the extended storage (SD) instead of the internal storage, it gives a warning saying that it is running low of storage space; yet I can proceed with the install.
If I restart the tablet, however, the app(s) installed in the SD card, under a kids profile, are gone.
The issue happens in two different Amazon Fire HD tablets: One 9th gen, and one 11th gen
Each tablet has a different SD card: 9th Gen a Samsung EVO 256GB, the 11th gen a SanDisk Ultra 256GB.
The issue ONLY happens under a kids profile. Any app installed in the extended storage (SD) under an adult profile does not give a warning of low disk space, and they persist just fine after a reboot .
I have an 11th gen still running 7.3.1.9 and second adult profile cannot write to SD card acting as portable storage. I was wondering if an update would help, but sounds like these tabs still have issues with SD cards vs non-primary profile.
so..it just updated AGAIN...what did they do to it?
I'm not hallucinating! split screen apps! yatta!

Is fire hd 8 have dolby atmos ? I can't find that icon to access it
SUPPOSEDLY they do, but I cant find any settings for it either.
i noticed another thing too, the keyboard now has a speech to text option.
it...can kind of be..hit or miss on accuracy.
lets just say I tried to voice type a comment about grocery shopping to my sister and it ended up with words I wouldn't repeat to my own worst enemy, forget family ^^;
now there's a recent apps section and the home screen is completley different now, and somehow worse. and the imdb tv app can be uninstalled from google play... yay
how do I access the recent apps section?
it doesn't seem like every device has it, its at the top of the home screen.
heres a screenshot of it
how interesting..it looks like its part of the 'recommended widget'
looking at it some more they also added a unified search option in settings which allows you to turn on bing (lol) and use it for the searchbar search engine, i think it also effects silk
they also revamped the help app, it's actually useful now!
You can always just install Google play store/framework/account manager/services the install a new launcher and disable com.amazom.firelauncher it will be identical to a tablet without fire Os and the home button will make the launcher home once the Amazon app is disabled with ADB
I set bing as my preferred search provider...thanks for the tip there ^^

Fire HD 10 - question about using Toolbox

I read if you have a certain OS version that it may not work correctly. I installed the Nova Launcher and it Runs, but then it reverts to the normal Amazon screen, and I have to run nova launcher again. When I went through the Tour to install things, all of them failed, but when I went back to the normal Toolbox menu I was able to install Google Services, custom launcher.. but when installing Nova Launcher it installs, but it does not try to disable the fire launcher like it did in the Tour guided steps. When I bring up Nova Options it say click here to make default launcher, but when I do there are 3 options
Assist & Voice input
Browser App
and
Opening links.
will this happen no matter which launcher I try to install? Am I stuck with the amazon launcher? Is there no way around this? If I disable all amazon services will it disable? Hoping someone could give me some help on this. I don't know where to look to see which OS version I have. if I go to system options, Device Options, about fire tablet it only shows...
Device model Fire had 10 (11 Gen)
Serial Number
Build number 0022247233412
How do I change the launcher on HD Fire 10 (2019) (+ a few other questions)?
I've had a Fire HD 10 (2019) knocking around since black Friday, and I've finally got around to looking at it... I realise that it's not fully rooted, but does has some sort of temporary root... (from this thread)...

Amazon Fire 10HD 11th Gen + Google Play Store error

So after my grandchildren signed me up to Amazon Prime without my knowledge on my kindle fire, I decided to use the kindle toolbox on their brand new fire HD 10 tablets (11th generation).
I completely debloat all the Amazon software (after enabling dev options menu), install google play services, waited a minimum of 10 mins as advised before trying google play and I also installed evie launcher – all of this was done using the toolbox v27.
The problem is when I try to log my kids into their new tablets using their own gmail accounts, I keep getting the ‘something went wrong’ screen and all I can do is try again, but it keeps on failing.
I’ve tried not removing amazon software and then adding google play, but that doesn’t work.
The only thing that does work is if I login to play store using my account.
My thinking is this must be a family link / permissions thing because they’re all under 8 years old.
The really confusing thing is when I did this same thing on my kids Huawei T30 tablets, it worked fine, no problems???
So, it’s either some security setting in the fire tablet, or because these fire tablets have a newer version of android than the old and no longer working Huawei tablets (Android v6).
Anyone got any ideas how I can login my kids into their own play store on their own fire hd 10 tablets using their own google accounts, without creating child profiles and without leaving my account logged in on their tablets for them?
The only thing I can come up with is to change their d.o.b. in their google accounts, log them in, then change it back, but I suspect this won’t work long term.
I really need to understand what’s causing the problem first.
