Death of CM? - Google Pixel Guides, News, & Discussion

This popped up in my Google feed today. It looks like CM will be no more. That may explain why development has been so slow for the Pixel.
http://www.theverge.com/2016/12/24/14074496/cyanogen-flail-shutting-down-services
A little research infers that LineageOS may replace CyanogenMod.

it means devs will have to find another stable base to work with such as aospa or googles aosp. also read the article above to see what may come of CM.

CM had run its course. Not even a niche player these days.

Lineage OS will be around to replace CM. They will still be a big player.

Yep. Many of the DM's and contributors forked the open source code and have been working on rebranding. Just give them some time......

Yeah seriously I don't know what's the mystery about it.. Already running cm10 on my gtab and gnexus I know they don't like people ask when their phone will get CMXX. but CM developers should try to communicate better with users... Open source, free work in this scale is not excuse for blindness

Maybe it's worth posting a note on the cm forum and getting as many of us to sign it, that's how we got cm9 in the first place. I'm pretty sure they're already working on it.

Xplodwild does a great job on implementing the s3 cm10 previews. I tested the previews from the beginning. I have now migrated to N7000 and cannot wait for the First previews there.

There will be long wait to have a fully working jellybean on the Note.
Mostly due to Samsung who delays Note updates for newbies critical bugs (ie brick bug) and also to sell the Note 2. Why users will buy Note 2 if they have a fully working ICS/Jellybean on the first one ?
Kernel/FW sources will be released in a long time.
Concerning CM10, hope they will not face issues like working camera etc.
As an example, CM9 & Aokp/Aosp are ready for months on galaxy tab but still missing functionnalities & working camera which make them useless. Cause of no sources available for devs.

Cm9 works with 4.0.4 way before samsung releases 4.0.4.. Drivers compatibility its for 4.X.X that's well known.. And cm team several weeks ago (since jb source droped into aosp) started the merge with ics and they said it was a piece of cake since the drivers from ics are the same... We don't need samsung sources to get JB.. Cm can deliver a jb rom with what they already have..
And in the case of gtab 10.1 we don't have working camera because our kernel developer Wich also is the cm9/10 maintainer for tab ported all the drivers from honey comb Wich were a slightly improvement over ginger bread drivers.. That's why we don't have a working camera yet.. But hey everything else works. Hwa/gps/sound/wifi/3G and cm10 its running on the tablet buttery smooth with the lack of camera.. And those are drivers from honey comb..
So tell me what's wrong with cm10 for note when they have every single driver for ics available... Makes no sense to me... Most of the popular phones/tabs cm supports in cm9 already have a cm10 preview
Difference here its that our cm developer I'm gtab is an angel.. What a nice guy he baby every single person that uses cm9 and or his kernels... He takes care of every single case one by one and he didn't move to merging jb until the last of us solved his personal issue...

You just did not understand what i've written.
I am hoping that CM teams won't face these issues like camera even if they should not be concerned.
I am certainly not speaking about their awesome work but about the fact that if issues raise with CM10...it can be hard to fix since Samsung are not going to release the eventual sources needed before months.
Nevertheless, i am running CM9 and I love it. But there are still missing stock functionnalities. It is for users to know if they can live without them or not. Some absolutely need S-suite...other the Mhl...and for me, working camera especially for skype is a must have. That is why I have to run that **** of samsung stock over my gtab 8.9.
I am angry towards Samsung...not towards the different developers teams who litterally save us.
As an example, they fix the emmc brick while Samsung did not do it yet and force most of Note users to remain at Gingerbread..which just innacceptable for the ones who's getting the most money between manufacturers.
I also have the Xperia S...comparing Gb/ICS to samsung stock is just day and night. At the end...comparing to any devices I had/have..Samsung provides the best innovations and hardware but the worst system.

it's depending to Samsung. their to busy making big money instead of customers who facing problem with their own product. working too slow to solve their own problem and not appreciates value customers.

Here's come the legend! RESPECT!
Seriously, we can't wait to test JB in Galaxy Note!
I'll wait for the Butter.
Yeah, we got lucky. Unlike GB audio blobs in ICS, ICS audio blobs worked with a backwards-compatibility wrapper in JB.
I don't think anyone was expecting it to work but it did. I would've started working on the Note tree last night, but I got home late and am away from home almost all day today. xplod will probably have a tree up before I get home, he cheats by being 6 hours ahead of me in timezones!
Due to certain limitations of our graphics blobs, the majority of "butter" will not be present.

Out of curiosity, would the limitations be fixable, given time? Or is it just not-fixable and our Notes would forever be dry and crusty, without any butter?

What? Aosp is aosp. Android open source project. There's only one source. It can't "depend on the aosp".
Aosp means built from source which makes it easier to add mods and such. Otherwise stock aosp and stock OTA are pretty similar.

yes ik that but cyanogen mod is also aosp...as well as others.
W ouldn't AOSP be sorta pointless in a Nexus device, seeing as its basically a pure android experience (as is AOSP) straight out of Google? I get AOSP /AOKP on a Samsung /LG/Sony/etc that's plagued with crap and bloatware, but on a Google device?
Just think about it...
Yeah, the ideal rom to me would be a deodexed stock rom. That way you know everything works but mods are easier to add.

Nah. Mods are much easier to add to aosp. That's why CM and AOKP are modified from AOSP.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here... But isn't the Nexus 7 an AOSP stock rim as is? I mean it seems to me like it's vanilla (AOSP) android with Gapps added... Remove theGapps and u have AOSP, no?

depends on the rom. as mentioned before, some devs use AOSP as a base and add features to it. if you go for just a plan AOSP, then its semi-pointless. but if you go for a ROM that has AOSP as a base and adds a crapload of customisability to it, then there are some benefits. some have integrated equalisers, integrated speaker amplifer apps, more choices for screen settings, etc.

BeanStalk port worked! Waiting for Scott's permission to post in dev section

I used this rom on my Samsung infuse and it would be awesome if a dev could port it to the s4!
If you look on the original thread in the infuse forums you can see step by step instructions on how to port it.
I tries to do it, but don't know how to do step 6.
It turns out I was able to do it on my own!

That rom is AOSP-based. So why don't you just try one of the other AOSP-based roms around here, such as AOKP or SlimBean?

It's not really easy whatsoever to port a Rom that is for a different device especially if the resolution is different for the other Phone.

That's where source comes in handy...it eliminates a lot of those issues, really all we need is xxhdpi (we should be able to cherrypick that from cm when needed) to be added into aosp and then source porting should be a breeze for the most part - if you know how to build from source that is...actually building a custom aosp rom like scotts, that's a different story
Zip porting is where resolution and all that stuff makes it hard/not possible
Just look at cm...its available on nearly every device...why? Because its got its source up. Basically all you need to do is add in all the correct hardware source, kernel sources, device sources and proprietary files and your good...not saying its easy, as you do need to figure out what you need to add in, as well as edit a few files...but its definitely not really hard (although some of those errors you run into do make you want to throw your computer out a window)
-I guess it is a little hard, but for the most part its pretty much the same for any source port...trial and error your way through errors until it builds
Anyways, I'm sure someone will get around to it...I was gonna try and compile pure aosp...but my dev environment needs to be updated before I can start compiling again (been months since I compiled anything)
If it can be ported to the galaxy s3, than it can be ported to the galaxy s4 (I'm not saying the two are similar, but both are completely different from the Samsung infuse)

Please keep in mind, in order to build from source you must have linux...actually I think Mac works too...but windows won't
Follow the link in my signature, its full of a bunch of tutorials, somewhere close to the top should be a thread called compile jb from ubuntu or something like that...follow that thread to get you started and get you build environment set up
-it is very confusing at first especially if your new to linux, bit once you get going it gets easier
Anyways, good luck!!! The great thing about porting from source is it gets your feet wet, gets you used to the basics with source...and eventually you can get experimental and start creating your own source roms...also, it is kinda addicting lol, for a while I was compiling non stop...I went from a flashaholic to a compileaholic lol...now, I'm neither due to my busy schedule but summer is just around the corner for me so that should change

The source code has been available on github, from the following link , this has been available for some time, but I lack the knowledge, and time to build the ROM, and kernel.
The kernel is a modified CM11 kernel, and the kickstarter file from the repository should setup the rom with all the repo dependencies (including the actual sailfish os part) that it relies on to work, providing I correctly understand what a kickstarter file does.

Is it possible to port it to galaxy s4 i9500?
If yes, can some port it? or can someone teach me how to port? or is there any tutorial for porting it?
This looks Promising ...
I want that ^^ can't weit till we can get a shot at it
yeah, I hope we will get some news soon, I'd fancy a nexus 5 sailfish-rom most of course
Anyhow, it seems the nexus 5 wasn't that of a good choice imo. Sure, it has good specs for that low price, but owning a Nexus S before I thought the N5 is a good choice also towards support for new roms (like the Nexus S was: you always got new / experimental roms for it first). Now the N5 seems to have bad hardware in the way that it is hard to implement in new roms (e.g. find suitable driver) which is a shame. Well, I'm not sure if I'd buy another Nexus phone again, thankfully there are many alternatives now (the fairphone, jolla phones etc).
Umm.. Guys? The rom has been out for over a month already.

Is CyanogenMod worth it?

I'm running PureNexus and its a great rom but is CyanogenMod a viable choice for this phone? I haven't really seen threads on it but i see there are nightlies being built.
Coming from an OPO CM was a pretty big deal but it doesn't seem so here. Is anyone running it that can give their opinion?

Lots of good choices and I've tried at least a half dozen. It's completely subjective but so far my personal favorites are RR, Pure Nexus and Screw'd. RR has all the extras most would want but it's really stable as well.
Yea I think CM gets lots of attention because it seems to be a popular rom to port to devices that don't have as many roms (or none at all besides CM.) Not that it's not really good. I've used it on other devices. Some were really stable, others I'd need to do clean installs every month or so. Using multirom now and have Pure Nexus as my primary rom with Uberstock and RR as secondary, but that could change from week to week.

PureNexus is great, really stable but i might try RR for the features. Isn't it CM based?

It's certainly buggy, but I've found it worthwhile. Root access, privacy guard and call whitelisting are features I'd not want to be without.
