Chinese Version Mate 9 on AT&T with Play Store in the USA - Huawei Mate 9 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hey everyone, just bought myself one of these and am using it on AT&T in the states (Florida). It came in the mail and i popped my sim in and did a review if anyone is interested in getting one themselves. To summarize it, it works great, although some core assistance apps are stuck in chinese, such as their version of siri app, their own wallet app, etc. The seller (eBay) pre-installed Play Store on it as well somehow, even though the phone had never been used as far as i could tell since i unboxed it. The video covers it all though. Enjoy!
Its a Ceramic White 64GB internal, 4GB RAM.
The model number is MHA-AL00 and the build is B153, was B137 when i first bought it.

Guys get the US version. The china version will have many issues as it is not certified to run on our networks or infastructure so things like GPS, WIFI and cell signal will not be up to par. Also the China version comes with many tracking software that is required by the Chinese government so it can monitor its people for everything they do.

It is. The US has very strained relationships with China. For a very long time US based satellites wouldn't connect to GPS in Chinese devices. There was also issues with cell signal as some of the OEMs were banned in the country.

I have a Chinese 6/128 version. I use it with both AT&T and T-Mobile. No LTE connectivity issues whatsoever. I get the exact same speeds as on my GS7.

Call it what you will. I have worked on the teams that put many of those things in place as well as still work in a field where many of China's OEM devices are banned from use.
Things like this are mostly legends and rumors to most of you newer guys.

Every company collects data from us, if they get banned is because political reasons. And it is not going to make your wifi,gps and 4g not work because of them being chinese ( this connections are standards ).

Actually it does do just that. Come where I work and your device will die.
It is not political. It is national security. Mainly with the war against China looming. Heck Even the maker of the nexus 6p was banned in the US and India for years for security concerns.
Those connections are not standard. You plainly have no idea what you are talking about. So there is no point in continuing this really.

We did a series on what it is like for a westerner in China. Should have a look. Or even better get a chance to go. It is a beautiful Country. Too bad Politics always have to get in the way of things

The networks in the US and in China are most certainly different, but the Chinese model of the Mate 9 supports both. In fact, the US model and the Chinese model are exactly the same, in terms of hardware. Only difference is software.
You can check what is supported and what is not supported just by looking at supported radio frequencies, and compare them to the carriers. A Chinese phone supporting LTE Band 4 will support it in the same way a US-certified phone will support LTE Band 4.

screen mirror / miracast
Can anyone that has a mate 9 confirm whether or not the phone is compatible with screen mirroring / miracast?

My question is does any one have issues with multimedia messages? I just switched to AT&T from Verizon and my Verizon phone has had an issue where I have one minute to open multi media messages or it will expire.

AT&T Galaxy Tab

I am on AT&T for the main reason that I travel frequently to Europe and Asia (Japan, Hong Kong) and it's the carrier who happens to have devices with 3G bands compatible nearly worldwide (Even though I don't like so much the price AT&T is costing me...)
So... really considering now to switch to the Galaxy tab and say good bye to my good old TP2 (heavily overclocked so still with a bit of life in it !)
I have a few questions
1. there are rumors here and there saying the Tab for AT&T wont have the front facing camera (And then some other places where it's listed as a spec of the AT&T tab). Anybody can confirm / infirm this ? (Would be really pissed to pay such a price for the device if it has been castrated)
2. AT&T is the last US carrier not to have announced a launch date for the tab... (Maybe it's willing to be a bit nice to Apple and its recently commercialized iPad, or maybe it's just an old and slow company...). Pure speculation: is there a chance we'll be able to switch the tab bands from T-Mobile like some have successfully done with other Samsung phones from the galaxy family ?
3. Another pure speculation: has Samsung actually disabled the hardware for voice calls on the US versions ? I hope his will be solved by flashing another firmware. Otherwise I'll just end up buying an international version (Which will be much more expensive...)

Thanks. Yes these bands are AT&T ones. Though waiting a few more weeks should allow to get it directly from AT&T at a lower price...
The good news is, if the websites are correct about the specs, the front facing camera is there (And I doubt Samsung will make a different Tab)
Seem to imply the voice call work to (negrielectronics) but it could be a mistake or a trick (works only through skype...) or just simple taht we are talking about an overseas model with the right 3G bands

What concerns me are the comments that suggest US carriers will somehow restrict their service to GT so only data will work (no voice). So that raises the question for those of us who get the unlocked version - how do we get our Gt on to ATT or others? I guess I'm asking which ATT phone is it close enough to that I can acuire and swap the SIM card?

Well, from what I hear is the 850/1900 band version will be an unlocked north amaerican version which can work with rogers (Canada) and at&t for the US by just adding your SIM card in. It is unknow weather the at&t network will identify the galaxy tab and change your plan accordingly if that is even how it will work with at&t. I beleive they WILL have a different plan for data for this device as T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon are following this. Also, the at&t version WILL be a different model in appreance and features as this unlocked one will not. Probablly because at&t WILL remove the front camera and who knows what else (thanks to the iphone). That is why the samsung site has not put the at&t version on their site yet. really do hope it will be treated as a PDA phone thru at&t's network (for the unlocked version)

I just heard today from Negri electronic that this version of the tab will not be available until JANUARY ...so don't bother pre-ordering it.

That's funny as they told me last Friday that the warehouse in CA is expecting them on November 10th. Also, I work near the mobile city online store in NYC and stopped in there and they said this week they would have them. hmmm
UPDATE: Just sent a message to my contact @ Nergi. He said they just received the notice that this version of the tab will not be in till early 2011. You were right clubtech... Was hoping you were wrong.. lol That sucks!

I have my G-Tab now (Euro version with phone and data working great on AT&T in USA) Be glad to answer questions. General comment: I LOVE it! The form factor and wt are just right for me and it has all the features I miss on my iPad. Only criticism is that I find Android a bit less stable than IOS but that might be what Gingerbread or Honeycomb will address.

Are you getting good 3g coverage? I see your in PA... Close to me. I know the 1900 band does blanket this area to some degree but the 850 band is alot stronger. I think I may wait for a full 3g band with both 850/1900 bands. Seems like the bell version will be the answer to that. Glad to hear you love the device.
I read that the bell version can't make any phone calls fyi .

Yes the 3g coverage is fine in the Reading area (better than my iphone, not sure why) I made decision to go for the Eur version when it became apparent the ATT version would be limited to data (no phone) and I couldn't get an answer on whether the "North American" version (with 850 UMTS) would arrive with phone capability OK. I saw a map of ATT 1900 coverage and saw that it takes care of at least 75% of the US, including virtuall all of the East, so I'm comfortable with my decision.

[Q] U.S. GSM Tabs: phone capable?

it's been brought up in other threads, but I'll get right down to the meat of it: Are the US variant tabs capable of sending and receiving cellular voice calls and texts, hardware wise? In other words, is the hardware there and just disabled by software, or are they physically incapable of this function?
Im on Sprint now, but my goal is to switch to T-Mobile or ATT so I can swap sim cards from my phone to a Tab at will. (yes, I know the tab takes a micro sim, but there are adapters). If the cellular radio is left intact, then rooting and flashing new firmware could enable it. Am I right?

I don't think anyone truly knows if the phone functionality can be re-enabled on the US Tab, but are you sure the US Tab uses micro-SIMs, because the European one just uses standard ones?

Engadget reported that some T-Mobile US customer have been sent microSIMs recently, which lead to a spate of rumours about the iPhone4 but it was supposedly then confirmed that the microSIMs are to do with the Tab instead.
I spoke with T-Mobile tech support early this morning... the tech said according to the trouble shooting guides that they have to use... the hardware is there, but voice has been disabled due to software restrictions. If you look on the product page on the T-Mobile website, the specs listed have all 4 gsm radio frequencies as well as 2 aws 3g radios. The display pic even shows 4 full bars of cellular reception. The tech said voice was not supported at launch... however if the phone was "hacked" (his words) technically it could be used for voice and data. He also said that the data plan for the tab is the android smartphone plan, so if you do flash a new rom and have the unlimited plan... you should be gravy for voice and data!! I hope that all of this turns out to be true... we shall see in the next 2 days.
thanks for the info, im already a tmobile customer and want to do the same thing, flash cyanogen to the tab. I have a nexus one and this would rule. my only other question is...can i use my full upgrade on the tablet? i spoke to a 2nd lev tech support and he said i might have a problem doing that because its tech. not a phone. the regular rep couldnt help me at all, she had no info until launch....didnt even know launch date. again can i use my tmobile upgrade for the tab....

IF this were true, and the hardware is all the same, then that would also lead us to believe that the EUR version should have 850 3G capabilities too then, should it not?
I find it hard to believe it is a software limitation. I HOPE it is but highly doubt it.....fingers crossed

No.
Rumours are that the T-Mobile US model uses a microSIM.
If that's true, then there must be some sort of difference in hardware between it and the EU models.

Not necessarily - the Telus Desire and "regular" Desire are essentially the same but have different radios to support different bands.

Just came back from demoing the Tab at my local tmobile store. It does use a standard sim. However the update is this: in the apps management screen, it seems that the only thing missing is the actual phone apk. The phone utility apk is there and the contacts apk is there. It looks like we just need the phone apk and then possibly the contacts merge apk to get voice enabled. Anyhow, the phone is being released at 11am pst tomorrow in my town, mine is on reserve so I will have it by 11:05am pst. anyone who wants to guide me into activating voice on this baby, send me a message and i will be happy to assist with trying some methods out.
I will need to try the following apk's from the euro version:

contactsmerge.apk
oh, the local reps looked on the computer and said that this device WILL require a webconnect data plan, not the unlimited android. There is a work around though... with voice enabled, you can call tmobile and ask for a tech support supervisor, open a trouble ticket and request an engineer to change your device ip range to that of a smartphone... then data and voice should work together. I had this problem on my aws version of the dell streak and it fixed it using unlimited voice and unlimited android data plans.

So how are they 'essentially" the same then? Different radios means different hardware....
This is my point, the US versions are not going to contain the same hardware, hence it will not be a simple software fix. I HOPE I'm wrong, but I don't see it happening.

Because it's one tiny chip that's different, that's all.
The CPU, RAM, camera, display, OS, everything else is the same - hence essentially the same.

As foxmeister has pointed out, most of the hardware will be the same, so if it's as simple as just the 3G chip being different then it's possible that yes it may only require a simple software fix to enable voice calling.
The units don't to be 100% identical for it to just be a software matter.
However, until someone gives it a go there's no way of being sure.
the microsims are for iphone user that have unlocked their phones and port them over to t-mobile (makes it easier then cutting).
as for the plan. webconnect and regualr cellphone plans are two different animals... one customer having a mobile and a data stick will have two accounts. the webconnect plan is actually just data, no voice options. so really the only way for you to use this device as a phone is if you buy it full price and try your android device sim card on there. THEN theoretically it should work.

So why wouldn't ANYONE just flash the EUR firmware then and have everything enabled? You don't think they thought of that???

Interesting logic....
So the Wave and the Galaxy S are "essentially" the same then....you cannot just throw Android on it and away you go...your logic would say otherwise.
The Wave too has the same CPU, RAM, Camera...etc. as the Galaxy S
Mine is onhold and waiting for me... I have a friend who knows Android tweaks inside and out ready to help me in the morning... hopefully we will know soon.

The same logic applies to locked and unlocked handsets, quite often it's just software 'so why wouldn't anyone just flash the generic firmware?'
It's a risk, that's why people don't do it.
However, in this case there may be something to be gained from taking that risk.
Unfortunately, we won't know for sure one way or the other until some intrepid soul takes that risk.
But the fact still remains, the vast majority of the hardware (ie basically everything but the radio) will be the same as the EU model and that means there is the possibility that all the T-Mobile US Tab (or perhaps an AT&T one) needs is a re-flash to activate calling.

Now you're just being absurd.
The two situations are not comparable.
In the case of the Tab we're talking two versions of the same device just with different frequencies supported, both are still the Galaxy Tab, both are still the P1000, it is essentially the same device.
In the situation you have, for reasons unknown, chosen to highlight, they are two different handsets completely - they are different models, they have different model numbers, they just happen to have similar specs.
It would be like saying the Desire and the Trophy are the same just because they have the same CPU, RAM and camera and that you can just 'throw' the OS of one onto the other. It just doesn't work like that.
Or maybe you'd like to lend your expertise to the teams of people around here working tirelessly to port OSs between various handsets? Clearly they've missed a trick with this 'throwing' business you speak of(!)

Nexus 7 2013 4G LTE no way to manage Data plans

Google seems to not care about rest of the world with their devices, only the USA I guess.
I got myself a Nexus 7 2013 4G LTE from the USA to use here in Egypt and I've read numerous posts about it not supporting normal GSM phone calls with a lousy reason that it is a tablet not a phone. YEAH SURE, then why Samsung, Asus (own devices) and many others offer the functionality ?!
Anyways I said ok, I will use it only for Internet Data the realized even that is a pain to do.
Here in Egypt we use pre-paid SIM cards and that requires USSD functionality which Nexus 7 4G LTE lacks so every time I need to renew or charge my Data plan, I have to take the Nexus 7 out of the case, pop out the SIM card, pop it in my iPhone, renew/recharge, pop it out of phone and back into the Nexus 7. How convenient! .
Any way to fix that ?
I don't know about Egypt, but here in Australia, just about all PrePaid services can be recharged online. Instead of taking the SIM out, why not just use the one already in your iPhone, and recharge using the iPhone's browser?

1. It's a tablet....not a phablet. It's not meant to be a phone intentionally. Other devices are... Because they intentionally make them that way.

Actually, all variants of the Nexus sold on the Australian Play Store as well as through various retailers. It's not a US exclusive.

I tried charging online but for some reason when the SIM is in the Nexus 7, it won't work so I have to put the SIM in my iPhone first for either online or USSD charging. I think it has something to do with some network requests that is blocked or can't function on the Nexus 7

1-As I mentioned, I am ok with it not having a phone functionality but at least they should've made it fully functional with mobile data
2-Actually I've also tried Nexus 7 LTE EU model (from the UK) and it has the exact same issue and the only difference is 4G LTE frequencies that are a little bit different but it is not a problem because we still don't have 4G LTE coverage here and H+ is fast enough for me.
Many people complain about the same thing in Google forums but no official response yet

I'm going to challenge (1).
The fact is that the chip they use for mobile data IS a full phone chip. You can use it for voice calls or data. Similarly, it can support up to 7 bands in LTE and HSPA+. So this isn't a choice not to include - it's a choice to BLOCK a feature. This is the same with SMS. Worse, the LTE bands for Canada are 4 and 7 but we don't get the EU model - which supports those - we get the US model which only supports 4. Worse, the US model only uses 6 of the 7 bands. They *could* have include 4 & 7 on the US model, but didn't. So Canada kind of got the worst of both worlds.
If Google simply didn't include a phone app and left it up to you to find one, I'd be ok with this. Like you say - it's a tablet and Goog wasn't marketing it AS a phone, so no foul. But they went further and not only removed the API in the OS to support phone service, they blocked the chip. That's going somewhat farther than 'we didn't intend for this to be used to as a phone' to 'we're not going let you use this as a phone in any way, ever.' they actually had to put in EFFORT to prevent you from using it as a phone.
Something similar happened with SMS. In 4.3, you can use SMS, it's just poorly supported. They chose not to include the Messaging app and only put in minimal SMS receiving software. Kind of stupid because a lot of PAYG services let you top up using a text message. Still, as we found out - if you get the Messaging app from the Nexus 5, bingo - you get send and receive SMS.
But in 4.4 - they actually *removed* API to make this trick not work. That's not a casual thing. It's intentional.
It's one thing not to put in a feature that's not required when it takes effort to *add* it - it's quite a different thing to *block* a feature that would be there if you did nothing.
The whole idea of the Nexus line was 'pure Android'. These are supposed to be the 'hero' models that show what you CAN do with pure Android and let developers do what they want. Yet clearly, Google is intentionally blocking certain functions that would be there otherwise.
And some of us (myself included) think that kinda sucks.
As a non-American, I'm also going to challenge (2) just a bit...
Google makes money from everyone... not just Americans. They intentionally sell their products around the world and collect data from non-Americans to use to generate revenue. Europe alone has almost 500M people - more than the US. China and India together is almost 1.5B people. Those are rather large markets.
Yet consistently, Google suffers from the same 'country blindness' that other US companies have. If you're going to sell a product outside the US, you have to be aware of, and take into consideration the differences. What makes this ironic is that OUTSIDE the US, there's a lot of standardisation. For example, all of Europe uses GSM and has 2100MHz as their primary HSPA+ frequency. This means phones work everywhere. They use DVB-T for digital TV everywhere. The US (and sadly, Canada since we get dragged along for the ride) insists on using different tech. So the biggest carrier uses the antiquated CDMA system and other carriers use the incompatible TDMA system in order to prevent customers moving between carriers. You use ATSC for digital TV which almost no one else uses.
Google Glass is US only. So is Wallet. And Voice. What makes Wallet so odd is that the US is actually way behind the curve with chip and pin and NFC based payment systems. If they actually skipped the US and focused on Europe and Canada, they'd get further faster and might even help encourage US retailers to accept the technology. What makes Voice so odd is that other US companies that don't have their heads up their.. ahems... can provide World-Wide VoIP at nearly free cost NOW. I use MagicJack on my Android tablet (you know - to make phone calls that you're not supposed to do because it's not a phone), yet while my American friends can call ME for free - I can't call them (well not using Google Voice anyway).
Are there alternative? Yep. But that doesn't justify or rationalise away Google's bizarre choices. That's like suggesting that it's ok that the main bridge in your city collapsed because there's another bridge on the west side of the city.

Great News! Chinese version works on T-Mobile with LTE

Yes thats right. He got LTE on T-mobile. He said it was way better speeds than he got with his G3
I find this incredibly ridiculous that news sources, websites, and even Huawei themselves doesn't know what networks the Mate 7 works on. I'll wait for 2 or 3 more people to confirm this works on T-Mobile before buying it. I'd want the 32GB/3GB RAM version, will that work with TMo LTE?

I will be going to Taipei and Thailand in November so maybe I can buy the Mate 7 there. My big worry is whether there would be various models or variations in hardware configurations. I still find it strange that it seems hard to determine if a phone works with a specific carrier until it gets used on that carrier. If the phone says it works on Bands 2 and 4 should it not definitely work on T Mobile's LTE network? I sometimes wonder if the cell phone companies purposely confuse the issue so you will not buy a different phone. I am not an iphone guy but I believe I read that the Sprint and US Cellular Iphones (and maybe Verizon?)
support virtually every cell phone band in the world, if true, that is what I would like to see in a phone. You never know when you might make a wrong turn and end up in Chad or Outer Mongolia!

Not sure what bands its connecting on... as Tmobile in USA looks like it has 700, 1700 and 1900... but none of those are the reported 1,3,7 LTE FDD bands that the the mate7 is supposed to have.... maybe it also has band 2?

Yes. From the article:
" This version of the Ascend Mate 7 supports LTE and HSPA+ on T-Mobile and AT&T so I am enjoying it on T-Mobile's LTE network."
He didn't list a specific version, but I'm sure he would have mentioned if it were a US specific version as opposed to the normal Chinese version. So far all of the reviews that I have seen where Huawei has sent out a device have been the Chinese version.
Wonder which Chinese version it is since I want to pick one up next month when I travel. Any info is greatly appreciated.

I went ahead and asked which version he had working on t-mobile lte in the comments. He said...... "It shows model number MT7-L09. This one has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage"
He also mentioned with his pre paid ATT sim he was only getting HSPA+.
Interesting. It could be the APN with his att prepaid Sim. But at least it works for T-Mobile for sure.

This confirms what I posted in the other thread from the Youtube reviewer (Alex from AndroidHeadlines) who stated that he had gotten HSPA+ on AT&T, but LTE on T-Mobile.
When I Googled the model number (MT7-L09) it brought me to this page (http://consumer.huawei.com/en/mobile-phones/support/manuals/ascend-mate7.htm) which has a US/English support manual for the phone and specs that list bands 1/2/3/4/5/7/8/20/28.
MT7-L09 doesn't appear to be on sale anywhere online? I would rather the 3 gig model anyway. Might just pony up and try it. Shows the band's I need supported now. Coming from the note 3 this is exactly what I hoped the note 4 to be.

Yeah me too. I am just worried about ordering from Aliexpress and having it take a month to get to me. They are notorious for taking forever to ship to the US.
I really wish Huawei would get their stuff together and get this device in people's hands. Just put it on your website and let people pre-order it at least.

So I'm not too thrilled about the 6 GB/64 GB version we're apparently getting in Canada, and am seriously considering getting an 8 GB/128 GB version on eBay, but I'm concerned about it being a Taiwanese SKU/serial.
Does anyone have any experience or thoughts as to whether it would work in Canada, if updates would come properly, etc - or better still if I could just flash it to the NA version on arrival, etc.? Thanks!

I am also super interested in the ability get an 8 GB version working on Verizon. If someone knows for sure a flash would get the correct bands and it's not a hardware issue, that would be terrific.
Buying the 8/256GB RAM/storage version in Europe.
At the moment I am only able to find this phone available for purchase in Sweden with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Does anyone know if a version with the highest specs will be available in the future? Why aren't the phone available with all options in every country? Where can I go to get a version with better specs?

Bought my Verizon one yesterday. Based on the unlocked one I briefly got to fondle it does look to be a hardware limit.
The unlocked ones will not work on Verizon Sprint says in specs on Amazon website

The Amazon or global one is GSM network Verizon and Sprint use CDMA networks . So the info on their site is correct.

From my testing, the unlocked version will pick up Verizon LTE bands but calls fail since there is no VoLTE option on the phone. Did not pick up any of their 3G signals, and their system would not accept my IMEI as a compatible device. So it may work if you can convince Verizon to add the phone to their system, which is unlikely since they already have their own version.
FWIW I also tried it with a Sprint SIM, but got no service whatsoever and their system would not accept the IMEI. Thew in a Cricket/AT&T SIM and the phone worked as expected.

I miss the high score I've built up in Klondike for the last 7 years and I miss all the notes I had in my Memo app and I definitely miss having Kernel options, because I'm not impressed with battery life at this point, but yeah, it's a beast. The screen is amazing. Like nothing I've ever seen before. The camera lives up to advertised and it's super fast.

Which LTE Bands are you getting?
I'm on T-Mobile,seems we only have Band 2 support on the WW unlocked 8GB/128 GB Model.
I've already initiated a return w/the e-Bay seller,more than likely,it's going back tomorrow.
I'd been OK with Bands 2 & 4,which are listed here:

I was able to get service on 4 and 13 for Verizon, and 2 and 12 for Cricket/AT&T. It may support more, but I'm not aware of any apps that will let me scan for service on all bands. LTE Discovery mentioned a "Potential eCSFB issue" with the Verizon SIM which is likely because there was no CDMA support.
Fun fact... apparently the phone supports XLTE with Verizon, which led to a rather depressing speed test compared to my service with Cricket.

THX!,just wanted to make sure we were talking about the same model phone.
I'm gonna give it one more day,get around town & see if the connectivity is OK.
If spotty (w/Band 2 only) ,I'm sending it back,or,selling it on Swappa.
Outside of sparse LTE Band support,it's a nice phone,I really don't wanna part w/it so soon after getting it.
Haven't tried out the AR/VR Capabilities yet,but,I do like the display & the speaker quality/loudness.
TBH,I'm covered in WI-FI Most of the time,but,I did expect better LTE Band support nevertheless,especially for a DualSIM/Unlocked phone.
The fact that it's being sold on Amazon as-is seems to be Asus shooting themselves in the foot,certainly there'll be quite a few returns,once people find out connectivity is less than ideal for an unlocked phone,one that is marketed to the US/North America.
Update on mine, battery life is getting better now as the phone settles in. NOT impressed with Data though. I was in the country yesterday, my ASUS Zenpad had 2 bars of 4G and the Zenfone was in roam. Everything else is great, and living without root is bearable, I guess. Fortunately, my 7 year high score on Klondike is an X-Box Live/Google Play game and the score were carried over from the X Box cloud. I know that sounds silly but 7 years over multiple devices is a long time to build up a high score and was a major stress point going to a locked down device
