Camera Screen - LG V20 Questions & Answers

I thought I saw a discussion previously, but free searching for it I could not find it.
So my Camera screen on my V20 shattered....I did not drop the phone or do nothing to where this should have happened (it's even in a case). I simply noticed it this morning, totally spidered.
I googled it and this seems to be a common problem with the V20. I am curious what people here have done to fix this problem.
Did LG fix it for free? Did you take it to a cell phone repair shop? Are you just dealing with it?
Thanks for the feedback.

Did you pull the clear sticker off the camera? This was a known issue before the phone came out, but the "screen protector" on the camera was supposed to alleviate it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBlUL-7Dl4U. Doesn't seem there are any replacement lenses yet.

Awesome....I can't even get it fixed?
No, I did not pull the screen protector off. I'm really irritated about it. Had I dropped my phone or something I would understand. To just break randomly though is ridiculous. I'm going to call LG tomorrow...But I'm sure they will be less then helpful.

you should pick out the screen(make sure not to scratch the actual camera lens underneath when you remove the glass pieces. Then buy just the camera skin from dbrand. It may not be the best option but it's a good temporary fix and its only 95 cents

The way it looks to have started from the "Flash" area. Did you happen to use the flashlight feature for a little to long? I heard that the heat that is being conducted from the LED's can have an impact on the glass' structural integrity....but just speculating here.
Really is unfortunate man and I hope you can get it replaced ASAP!
What carrier do you have? I know with T-Mobile I pay a premium handset protection and this type of issue is covered under that, yet it does cost $150+ but you should be able to get an entirely new phone with that protection.

I do randomly use the flash but for short periods of time (no more then 15 or so seconds at a time).
I have T-Mobile and will probably call them or LG next week. I don't want to pay the $150 as it would cost less just to take it to a cell phone repair joint.
I'm hoping (and expecting) that they will replace it for free. Had I have dropped the phone I would just own it and pay to get it fixed. But I am super careful with my phones. I didn't drop it and it's in a case, so I don't feel that I should be responsible to fork out a bunch of money for a known defect.

Yea I would just go to T-Mobile they will more than likely "inspect" the device and if they do not see any tampering or abuse it should be covered but take that with a grain of salt.

I meant the pieces of the camera glass

So I went in to T-Mobile today. They basically told me there was nothing they could do and I had to call LG.
I called LG. They agreed to fix it for free however, o have to send it to them for repair...With no loaner phone. They said it will take two weeks!
Long story short, I can't afford to lose my phone for weeks, so I won't be doing that. Hopefully the replacement camera glass will be available for purchase soon, and I will just do it myself.

Scratched Screen

Hey guys,
So I have my nexus 4, waiting for my (quite expensive) case and screenprotector to arrive - and of course I drop the phone. It lands screen first on ground (the back has the originial protector still on it, but it just has to be the front it lands on..). Luckily nothing is cracked, but it has hairline scratches.. On older phone I wouldn't even care, but I am sure you guys can sympathize how much it hurts on a 13 day device. I have a few questions:
- Any experience with returning it to google? It is within 15 days of purchase, might be worth simply returning it and then buying a new one. Maybe google will be generous and not charge me for the screen (unless you look at it under light, you can't even see the scratches..)
- Any experience with getting the screen replaced - either via official repair center or manually? I have replaced screens before myself, but always on an older phone. On this new device I am kinda afraid to do it.
- Any other ideas? Suggestions?
Thanks, hopefully somebody has some experience with this kind of things! (and hopefully nobody has this experience ever again )
When your screen protector arrives, just put it on. My experience is that the screen protector will make the scratches mostly invisible.

Then why is it a big deal? You really have no right to return it since you dropped it and now it has tiny scratches. Not trying to be an ass or anything but that is petty on your part. Put a screen protector on and you won't see them anymore.

Hard to tell from the picture but it looks like a piece of lint under a protector. If that is not a protector then it is under the glass.
In the 2 situation ... return your phone you have 15 days for this ... Enjoy !

You have no right to return an item YOU damaged. A company can refuse a return of an item if the owner caused the damage. That's no different then me buying the phone and shattering the screen then saying oh well its only been two days so full refund please.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
I think that you should deal with it, get the screen replaced if you don't like it with scratches. The fact that people say return it within 15 days after you damage it says that they are cheap and hold no responsibility for their actions. Man up. If you damage it, pay and get it fixed or own it with scratches on it - if it were that important to you, you wouldn't have let it get scratched up in the first place.
Here we go again...I'm pretty sure none of you ever did such things...with anything in life.

So I know we have had disagreements in the past, but this is one of the more naive things I have ever seen. He has a right to request a full refund within 15 days for damage that HE caused? That's absurd. I dare you to buy any ~$350 device from Best Buy, damage it, and then demand a refund because you are in the refund period. Please let me know how that works for you.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Google requires a 10% (15%?) restocking fee on items returned within 15 days. Even if you return it, you will have to pay 30 to 35 dollars.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
To everybody talking (joshnichols189, VoiD_Dweller, and others) how I shouldn't return it:
The reason I said "Maybe google will be generous and not charge me for the screen" is not meaning "i hope google won't notice muhahahhaha", it means - maybe google will not ask for the restocking because the scratches are small and google very nice. The word "generous" is there for a reason. I didn't say "blind" or "stupid" or "unlucky"...
I have a full right to return the item. If it is damaged, and it is, google has a full right to charge me for the damages. If I decide to return the phone, I will be ready to pay for my fault of dropping the phone (literally, haha). I am simply hoping google won't do that - not because they won't notice, but because they will be nice enough.
To others - thanks for the advice. Does anybody have experience with changing the screen? One option is to use this current screen as a screen protector - I already scratched it, might as well enjoy it, and if it gets too scratched I would just buy a new screen (these guys are not too expensive, do you guys know if that screen is genuine LG?)

Naive? No. Within 15 days of purchase as stated by Google you can return the phone for whatever reason you want. You people here are not the judge, jury and executioner. Google will obviously examine the phone when it is returned, and if they feel it is not in satisfactory condition, they will not issue a refund. That is up to Google to decide. And there are many companies, including credit card companies that will refund for a given amount of time for accidental damage caused by the purchaser.

Camera Module
Can you still take pictures? I want too see how pictures would turn out.
It should be a pretty simple swap though, maybe Samsung will even replace it for pretty cheap.

I can still take pictures, but I get a lot of flare, glare and washouts.
OP, whatever you used to take that picture works great! I would suggest calling Samsung and seeing if they will do a repair for you at a reasonable cost. If not would definitely follow what others said about googling it.
Adam Outler has a tear down video of the GS4 in his "Let's get the bootloader unlocked" thread in the development section. It shows the camera module (about 23 minutes in to the video) as being one piece and very simple to replace. If you can find a reliable source to buy the module (maybe one of the links in the above post) it would be your best bet. Maybe you can contact one of the people that have bricked their phone's and see if they can sell it to you for the parts? If you send it to Samsung, they will do a good job, but you might get it back with MF3 (if you don't already have it) and it will cost a lot more than replacing it yourself.

I haven't watched the video yet, but I called Samsung about an unrelated issue about mine about a week ago and I did ask about the MF3. They said as of right now (unless the guy was yanking my chain) none of the phones are being shipped out with the MF3 and they would send me a refurbished phone. Not sure if that was because of warranty issues or what. (I'm one of the special people that updated to MF3 and though they could put a custom recovery on it). I can't remember how much they said it would cost though.

Thanks, I used my trusty old Canon DSLR that I have had since 2005.
Things I tried that did not work:
AT&T store where I bought the phone. Not very helpful, tried to sell me damage protection (too late).
Samsung web site, "Support" and "Repair Request". Automated system led me around in circles.
I have now ordered a replacement camera module and when I get it I will try to do it myself using the Ifixit guide.
Trust me the repair is very simple and painless! Just take your time and make sure you don't try to take short cuts. Take your time following the guide and all will be fine. The second time and so on.. It will be fun!

Nope, sorry. The tracking does not give the exact delivery date, but I am guessing it will be September 4.
OK, the part came and I installed it. Of course as I was putting back the third-to-last screw I fumbled and the phone flew off the desk and landed on the concrete floor! Fortunately it seems to have survived unscathed.

I think the key to keeping it from breaking is to pull it all the way out and rotate it out of the way. Otherwise, you end up bending the little plastic arm that holds it in and it will snap.
Hasn't broke yet, but I have a feeling I will eventually break it

S5's charging port cover is curved. Be sure to pull out and push in the cover according to the shape of the hinge. If you pull/push it straight, the hinge will receive more force add more pressure.

It depends on how you pull and push it. I personally haven't broken anything out of more than 10 phones I've ever owned and used, no scratches either.
It's a bit fragile, but it will probably last 2 or 3 years with a bit of care.
If a replacement can be bought for $5 and installed with a screwdriver.. I don't think it's of much concern.

My wife's just broke after 2 months of use. TMobile refer you to Samsung who say they will fix it for free but it's a 2 week turn around. Don't know who would choose that option. They also say that fixing it yourself or another 3rd party voids the warranty.

Some people will have bad luck or some people are harsh in how they handle equipment. Mine is three months old without the slightest sign of wear on the USB port cover. Regardless the part can now be found for less than < $1 and it only takes two minutes to install.
Voiding your warranty? Only if you told them that you did it yourself. And if you really thought that was a good approach, then you have larger issues than your phone's warranty.

That would be nice if that is the case. I hope it doesn't require a full disassemble as the S5's waterproof design is a bit of a PITA to take apart and put back together unlike the S5 that takes under 60 seconds to take apart and reassemble.

Well, Booyah! That's simple.

WTF ATT!!

So I got my phone today and low and behold I have some serious (at least to me) blemishes and scratches on the back. Some pics below. I know they may not seem too bad but come on, this is a brand new phone, and unexceptable if you ask me. So I actually go to my nearby ATT store to see if they have stock already so they can swap it out and they don't have any yet. You could see it in the eyes of the workers that they hadn't seen one yet. Borderline oogling over it.
Anyways, they say call ATT and they'll send me another. I call and low and behold they CAN send me a replacement (not overnight mind you, I'd have to pay for that), but as I had to remind them, there is a backorder for it so they couldn't tell me when I'd get it. All this time I wouldn't be able to activate the phone. I say screw it, I'll keep it but you gotta give me something here. All they can do open a customer credit report and see if it goes through. Suffice it to say.....I'm pissed.

Yeah this is a total case of WTF. Must have happened in the flashing process when they added all their carrier crap.
Wow. Was it shipped in bag full of rocks?
Thats how mine is from GPlay! Not as bad as yours but the same type of marks.... Seems like it was slid around and there was a bunch of dust/debris in the box on the phone.. I called them up right after I saw and they were gonna set me up with a new replacement but there is a problem with there system with that apparently...:roll eyes: So I have to wait for them to fix that then get in contact with me to set up the replacement... Im using this one in a case in the mean time but it definitely shouldn't fly to get one that looks this way!
Looks like someone was skate boarding on it before shipping. Lol I would return it. There is no fu#king way I pay over $700 for a screwed up phone.

I was at my tmobile store when they unboxed their demo unit and it had the same nonsense. We considered that maybe they just purposely sent the ****ty ones to stores for demo purposes. Hope this is not a widespread issue

They would have touched it last when flashing their splash screenand doing the logo on the back. But a previous commenter said his gplay device was the same. I would look at how the phone fits in the retail packaging. Does it have room to move around at all, is what i would be looking at.

I think it has some room to move because there doesn't seem to be anything keeping it in place or anything protective it has to sit on. Its just sitting on indent of the phone with the documentation. I think it happened during shipping possibly especially if it was man handled it could bounce around and scuff up but idk? i don't see how sliding on cardboard could cause marks like that.
Im also still waiting on Gplay to reply and fix there system to get me a new replacement...
Did you have any issues getting AT&T to initiate the return? This is ridiculous, mine has this too.

AT&T wouldn't have done it themselves, just semantically speaking.
They would have made a deal with the OEM (Motorola) to make the modifications on their behalf before packaging.
Not defending AT&T or anything, of course.

Camera glass too fragile

I read somewhere this morning that V20 camera glass is easily broken, even without dropping or very extreme force. Anyone experienced this problem?

LOL yeah i saw the video, I think my cover will reduce the chances of that happening, also i havent remove the plastic it came with
Yep gotta be something. Throwing on a Dbrand on top of existing protector. Hopefully someone will make a tempered glass protector for it.
I barely realized there was plastic on top of it. I ordered full body matte from dbrand so that'll take care of it too.

I'm leaving the "Factory-Installed Lens Protector" :silly: intact until it begins to peel away. At that time,I'll remove it & use some of this sealer that I have leftover from use on the Note 7:

One guy left his flashlight on for 30 minutes, got his lense hot and the lense cracked.
Another guy got his new phone, took it out of box, looked at lense 5 hours later and claimed it magically cracked. Who knows what happened or what he did.
Then that YouTube scratch test guy tested the lense for scratches, he ran a sharp blade across it and watched it crack within seconds.
Now the entire Internet is in a panic over the V20 lense. Mainly reddit drama
I think it's all from the prior NOTE 7 PTSD!!!!
Beleive me, I am nervous of more wasted months too and just want to settle in with a reliable phone but I am not going to jump on the fear factor bus just yet.
I have been Luvin this LG V20 since friday !!!!!
I think it's a bit of a note placebo.

thinking of purchasing a v20 or a s7 edge, what have you enjoyed so much of the v20
Well, see what I have from YouTube I am apprehensive about the camera lens. That is way too brittle. Defitelyndont should've used gg4 or something closer and preferably near sapphire strength.

There's already a few threads covering this.
This same conversation happened with the g5 also. Mine broke after about a couple months or so. The replacements were (are) on ebay for a few dollars. It's very easy to replace, just pick it off with a small screw driver or tweezers and the new ones come with adhesive tape applied, just press it into place.

Oh Jesus. The same shi** came up wit the Nexus 6P glass cover on the back and bending Nexus 6P. Both were just myths at the beginning from some idiots that don't treat their phones well and then it never became a big issue again.
The G5 also had this problem, but soon calmed down.

Haha, I remember those 6P rumors...
I already have two scratches near my flash because I don't have a case yet. Hopefully the case fixes these concerns before I get one near the lens area.

I think it is already removed. I put my finger nail in the corner and can't see anything lifting up. Maybe that the guy at the sprint store removed it for me
If what people say is true though and the pieces are just a couple of dollars on ebay, it won't be that big of a deal anyway.

Just run your fingers along the camera area, if you can feel the two camera hole is recessed, you have a protector.
Someone with a v20 leave the flash on for 30 minutes and lets test the glass! Might as well do it now while your in your return period!
