Recently got the Sony Xperia Z5 Dual (E6683) - How do I root it? - Xperia Z5 General

I recently got a new Sony Xperia Z5 dual (E6683) running android version 6.0.1 (build number 32.2.A.0.253) and I was wondering what would be the easiest way to root it? I tried looking up guides on youtube like I did when I had my nexus 4 but I simply can't find anything. I'd greatly appreciate it if I could get some help...

That link is old and has instructions for E6653 running android 5.1.1 but I am using the E6683 running android 6.0.1. Do you have instructions that don't involve downgrading to an older version? I want to stay on marshmallow. Also I'm new to the whole rooting thing but I'm quite sure if I try to flash the E6653 firmware onto my E6683 I'd likely brick my device. I went to the instructions you posted and found that you had issues rooting it...

I don't understand, what is that link for? Would doing that even root my device? And I don't see the E6683 model even mentioned... What would following those instructions even do?
When I rooted my nexus 4 there were millions of guides everywhere and even videos of it, but I can't find anything for my Z5....
All I'm asking for is step by step instructions to root my Xperia Z5 dual E6683 running android version 6.0.1..................

If you don't want to loose x-reality and other sony functions, then you have to downgrade to Lollipop to backup your TA partition which contains DRM files specific to your device. Then you can unlock bootloader and upgrade to MM and root it.
If you don't care about all these functions then you can simply unlock your bootloader and flash patched kernel.
And that guide I mentioned above is universal, you just need to take to pickup files for your device.

I do care about those features, but I won't dare do anything to my phone unless there are specific instructions for my model. I will not attempt to follow instructions for rooting a different model since I don't want to brick it.

How do I downgrade to LP? And how do I back up my phone's DRM? Is it not possible to backup and unlock the BL while on MM?

BL unlock can be done even on MM, problem is when you unlock the BL, it wipes the DRM which contains keys that are being used by some xperia apps. Which means that it will not function properly, or will not function at all.
As I have read, only in LP can DRM be backed up, you can search for the it in the same thread that I shared. To downgrade is the same when you upgrade using flashtool.

Yes, flash 12.0.A.2.254 ROM and get root and custom recovery via DooMLoRD's exploitation for root for Android 4.1.2. Get the recovery that's required in the pre-rooted ROM.

Please, Dont. Dont make a fool of yourself. I did not said that I have SP wit UBL or anything, I just asked if "this method" which was second, was "also for UBL" just like the first one. I don't know how does that implicate that my SP BL is unlocked. You've got yourself wrong idea and you aint gonna drop it pretending that you are right. And what know? Seems like you are trying to convince me that my BL is unlocked, because I asked bout one of the methods..

I don't want to argue with you, it's your phrasing that made not only me, but some other users find it confusing too. (Not saying who though.)
And yes, it should work for unlocked BL too, but if you've unlocked your BL, flashing of kernel is so much easier.

Backing up TA / DRM keys need root, which means you need to be back to Android 4.1.2 to get it, since unlocking bootloader will lose the DRM keys...

[DEV][Thinktank]Root 23.0.1.A.0.167 FW on Sony Xperia™ Z2? (Android 4.4.4)

Today, the long-awaited update Android 4.4.4 for Sony Xperia™ Z2 is released.
Rejoice!
But, installing this update will overrun the root access. Root access will be gone. So, how to root 23.0.1.A.0.167 FW on Sony Xperia™ Z2?
I'm gonna try the same old "Easy Root Tool" and see what happens. Any ideas would be good!
-EDIT-
Do you want to update your Sony Xperia™ Z2 to 4.4.4 but don't want to lose root? Don't worry, you won't! Click "here"
Credits to @niaboc79
Also, thanks to @funky0308 and @Envious_Data for their work
-EDIT 2-
I got root on 4.4.4 on my own, using this guide, credits @norti
@niaboc79 's pre-rooted ROM was based on Generic RU and the NC feature wasn't working on it. So I wanted to download a brand new FTF with my customization number and followed the steps on the guide.
ZBAM!
Got my own .167 (4.4.4) ROM (Generic DE) with root on my Sony Xperia™ Z2.
we will find a way...
but you should definitely put question mark in title...
we are lucky to have older fw (I'm talking for LB, z3 can't be downgrade and they will have problems to root 4.4.4. I believe we could use older fw to root fw and to upgrade keeping root...
I'll upgrade later today and will try few things...

I doubt...
Sony patched all those security holes and all those methods should be updated.
Of course, someone should try...
Can anyone confirm he upgraded D6503 to 4.4.4?
Wouldn't downloading the update through PC companion and making an ftf/downloading an ftf and then pre-rooting the firmware work? We have recovery for the phone so a pre-rooted flashable firmware should work without working exploits right?

As a few members noticed, the thread title was a little misleading, as it seemed like there already was a way to root the new firmware.
I changed the thread title to one that shouldn't mislead people.

Don't bother to download that, it'll say it's 167 but you'll download 314 and flashing will stop immediately after downloading fw.

You wouldn't even need to do that.
1) Root .314 firmware.
2) Install locked bootloader recovery.
3) Make a pre-rooted firmware of the 4.4.4 build.
4) Install the firmware through recovery.

Is it for the D6502 or D6503? If I was able to update my D6503 to 4.4.4 I would have done it but I have been plagued with the same problem as all the other D6503 owners. I'm just going to wait for a UK unbranded pre-rooted firmware (or a UK unbranded ftf, whatever comes first).

They're options. I may not have made that clear.
If you have 4.4.4 and want root you have two options. You either downgrade or unlock bootloader.
My point is there are a lot of threads with people saying how do I root 4.4.4 and everytime the response is the same.
Choose one of the options below:

If you want to keep the DRM Keys then yes because when you unlock your bootloader then you will lose those keys

Maybe is my headache but to root we can simply Flash Recovery in fastboot and then SuperSU in recovery? Or why not? Thanks
Just a notice to some folks,
1) take a look at the "root" threads, and yes, there are several pertaining to trying to get root on 4.4.4.
2) Don't call people "liars", please. We know it's sometimes difficult for new users to find the appropriate information.
3) Be a little more precise in your answers. Not everybody is a technical genius
Now, for some folks who are new to the Z2 forums, and this includes Z2 tablets as well.
There is no "Easy" root for 4.4.4. This is well known to most folks. So basically it leaves 2 options.
1) Downgrade your OS to 4.4.2, then you can use the Towelroot based root application, and a few other things. Then you can flash a pre-rooted 4.4.4 ROM and still retain root and DRM keys.
2) Downgrade to 4.4.2 and Back-up your DRM keys using the available app, with root. Upgrade to 4.4.4 and unlock your bootloader, and install a modified Boot.img, flashboot boot a recovery.img, and let it install SU and binary (or use ADB). This way, if you honestly need your DRM keys, you can re-install DRM (and go back to 4.4.2), then migrate to 4.4.4
Honestly, other than some proprietary Sony music, and the loss of Playstation controller, I really can't see a need for the DRM keys anyhow.
Those are pretty much the 2 options. And Lollipop 5.0.x will offer no other options as well.
Bottom line, be nice folks....

Actually you will loose some camera functionality such as Sony Bionz image processing that helps to reduce the low light camera noise. I know there's a thread that restore this but I doubt that works 100%. Camera is the only thing stopping me from unlocking the bootloader to root, luckily we have an exploit which works on older kernels ?
zxz0O0 just released "in dev version for Z3/Z3C/Z3CT. I hope that this should work on Z2 on 4.4.4.
Have any of you tried? damn I am on CM otherwise woulda given a shot and see.

Nexus 6p 6.0.1 update help please

Hi,
Could someone point me in the right direction, I want to update but don't want to brick my phone.
I have a Nexus 6p running build number MDB08L.
On the bootloader menu it says:
"BL: angler-02.01"
"Baseband:angler-02.15"
"Product/Variant: ANGLER-ROW-VN1"
It is rooted and has TWRP version 2.8.7.2
The phone works fine, on boot I get a message saying "Your device software can't be checked for corruption please lock the bootloader" but as I say it then goes past that, boots and everything works as it should.
I would like to know how I go about updating to 6.0.1, I tried OTA but obviously that fails.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks

If only there was a guide that was pinned at the top of the general section (easy to find) that explained how to update. Oh wait, there is...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206928
I wrote that guide, it's in-depth and meticulously maintained. You'll find exactly what you need in section 10. The OTA fails because you can't apply an update to a device that has /system modified. The warning you get every boot is normal for an unlocked device and is nothing to worry about.

I know you mean well but that guide is incorrect (fastboot flash userdata is a huge no-no). My guide is more detailed and is tailored for this device.

It is yes apologies I am a n00b to this and got confused, I didn't realise MMB29M was what I am upgrading to I thought I had to match my number with one on the download page if that makes sense.
Anyway I have just followed the guide and now at 6.0.1 and fully rooted.

Hey guys, just go through the following thread very carefully.

Root on locked bootloader is not available yet. There is some degree of risk in unlocking the bootloader and rooting. Just go through the post but do it at your own risk.

Why did you do it buddy, I've clearly mentioned that it's for the dual sim variant. Has your phone started, if not, download and flash the single sim firmware using flashtool. Ask rrvuhpg to compile recovery for the single sim variant, he'll surely help you out.

Yes that's true but I never had any problems in my previous Z3 dual 6683, I flashed the 6633 firmware many times via recovery.
Only 2 possibilities, Single or Dual sim ( with A or with B in the firmware version) radio is an other part of the firmware.
Edit: Rootpack for single Sim is on the road, I'm waiting for feedback from @bimori

this mod DO NOT fully restore DRM functions without TA backup (it means DRM keys backup). How do you make TA backup? It is unable for XA phones at present.
