Mi 5S Camera Thread - Xiaomi Mi 5s Guides, News, & Discussion

Let's get a camera thread going here so we can showcase the Mi 5S capabilities.

Prone to lensflares, but very very nice! Low light performance could be better though.

Nice samples, when I get the phone I will try to mod it for better low-light performance.

As much as I'm interested in the great sample photos you probably took, I'm not gonna download some random .RAR from a one click hoster. Would you care to attach the pics in a post or up them to IMGUR?
Thanks in advance, I hope it's not too much of a hassle.

in daylight.mi5s's camera is great. amazing
but you need to use 3rd party camera like open camera to get nice picture. stock camera app is not good at low light

Nice! What ROM are you using? Are you using the default camera app or third party?

For perfect lowlight photos, must use manual mode.

I'm on the Xiaomi.eu ROM and was just using full auto mode with HDR enabled. Due to me being on a trip with some friends I wasn't able to fiddle around with manual mode until I got the perfect shot -- but that's certainly planned for another time.

What settings do you suggest for low light shoots?

Attached from left are image no HDR, HDR, Light room android RAW edit super low light and light room android RAW edit morning sky. All taken using stock camera app.
The camera is quite miss or hit. Sometime the photo came out pretty mediocre but sometime its on par with s7.

Play with manual mode, ISO 800-1600 and exposure time (1/15 - 1/18sec). have you a tripod, you can use iso 200-400 and exposure time 4sec or higher.
a lower ISO has better image quality!
Edit: add low light sample photo with manual mode

Pictures taken at a concert in different situations with really low light
Standard camera app (latest stable xiaomi.eu ROM), Auto mode, HDR and flash off

I've got some more to show you, too!

Some pictures with different light situations.

I'll try and do a comparison between miui camera and snap camera on cm13

Rubbish Camera!!

hello guys,
my camera is rubbish, i mean while moving the phone and watching the camera view everything is blurred (dont tell me focus), and when taking a video it records that nonsense
Are you using the Stock HTC ROM? If so what settings are you using? I had no problems with the quality of the Camera or Camcorder.

Revolution HD 1.7, i dont remember the quality on the stock rom, but i think it was better
omg now its very good, i did nothing :S
yesterday i was in a trip to the wild, imagine how many great pictures i missed :S, maybe because i was in the night?? but why do it lag in the night?
Generally pictures taken at night don't look very good. As the the camera sensor cannot pull in enough light.
Next time your out taking snaps at night try adjusting the ISO settings, that could also create more "noise" in your photo. Test and adjust until you find a happy medium.

You'll have to mess with the camera and its settings manually to find a good way yourself. Simply there isnt a simple solution to this sadly. The S5 Camera doesnt take in much light in dark conditions which is a con to it. You could try setting the ISO to its hightest setting in dark conditions as a starter.

Don't go around asking people to thank you, especially if your going to give outstandingly dull and boring reply's like that.
I found if you have the photo setting Picture Stablistion on it tends to blur the photo on the edges you get much clearer photos with it off as I think it tries to take the photo without the flash in low light if you have that setting switched on. Hope this helps.
-Turn on Picture Stabilization unless there is movement in the picture than keep it off and instead use sport mode.
-Turn Up ISO
-Use the flash depending on the conditions.

Not sure if this helps, but I tried Camera Zoom FX to ease my front camera low-light woes, and it did indeed help a bit if you play around with the settings. There was much less noise than with the stock camera app. I didn't try it with the rear camera however.

Well I just use Snapchat for front facing pics (in low light conditions) because it has the cool feature of flash on the front camera! I wish Sammy would implement that into the Stock TouchWiz camera app.

New way to take great photos with absurde quality (.PNG)

Hey everyone.
Today I searched in store some kind of camera app with macro focus feature (too bad Sony Camera lacks this.)
So I came across Camera FV-5. Nice interface, but still a Sony UI fan. Anyway, besides the macro focus, under Settings I found the option to save pictures as .PNG.
I knew it has a better compression, almost lossless, compared to the common and easy-to-process .JPEG, so I took one photo outside (ISO 50, AutoFocus, a bit lowered exposure) and one indoor (without flash, yellow/orange 60W lightbulb as source of light in the room, same settings as above.)
I was pretty impressed by the quality. It takes some time to process the image fully, Album firstly doesn't even recognize the photo as existent. Afterwards, it takes ages to load the cache when double-tap zoom.
Anyway, see how nice, crisp and clear photos our phones can take - with absolute no post-editing.
Taken with Z3 Compact with Cyberian Camera MOD.
BTW, the files are huge. One is 21.7 MB and the other over 25. That means 1 pixel is over 1 byte. Cool.
OUTSIDE VIEW
INSIDE ENERGY BAR
Wow - that shot of the candy bar is VERY impressive. Too bad the file size is so ridiculously large. Can you show us the same picture taken using the Sony Superior Auto Mode (8MP)?

I've attached 8MP and 20 MP versions, Superior Auto Mode.
And thanks to Cyberian MOD, I'm lucky to have macro auto-scene on 20MP also.
Also, massive improvement in quality overall, the Z5 Camera libs really work great.
Now that I can see them side by side, it still appears that the Sony camera app reduces noise better than the 3rd party app. I had a similar experience in a comparison thread I created a while back as well.

I have a hard time agreeing with you. I tried to compare the stock camera software to various 3rd party software (including Open Camera) and the results indicated that Sony's produces better images:

Google Camera with HDR+ comparison and thoughts

U11 Camera for still photos is (probably?) the best in class right now, but not without flaw that is overexposure.
As soon as the Modded HDR+ GC has become available I have decided to compare some shots with Stock camera w/HDR and Google Camera w/HDR+ enabled.
Here are some comparisons and my opinions.
Lowlight
http://imgur.com/2ziArQB
With Google Cam overexposure and blown out highlights are no longer an issue. However, the details in the shadow area of the low light image will get smudged out thanks to the noise reduction and/or become too dark.
on Stock HTC Sharpening is harsher than GC when 100% zoomed in but not as much as Sammy. The color on stock app is much more vibrant as well, but that comes with noisy image.
As a photographer I'd prefer lower noise image, but for smartphone camera that is not a very important thing comparing to, say, details in the dark area.
Overall Exposure and Details
http://imgur.com/Rqjk2hL
GC did a great job keeping all the details in highlight areas while stock app blown them to bits.
Colors, yet again HTC stock is punchy and vibrant on shadow areas while GC is a tad bit duller.
Close up
http://imgur.com/D7HEkbR
HTC, as usual, produce much more vibrant colors and more sharpened image while highlight areas are blown out.
It all comes down to your taste, people who like "Natural" tone will prefer GC while snap and go type better stick to HTCs'.
for me I prefer GC by the day and HTC stock by night as GC will give more room in image editing.
Basically, short squeeze for stock app, long squeez for Google Cam for me!

Current working Gcam with Portrait mode
https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/f/GoogleCamera-Pixel2Mod-Arnova8G2-V5.apk
Preferred Setting
Config for HDR+: Pixel 2017 ZSL HDR+
HDR+ Parameters: Default or higher (not much difference but longer process time)
Final jpg quality HDR+: default(95) or higher, little differences
For me, Google does a better job in low-light, my bathroom.
Clearer and more details, look at the spay can on the right at the back.
But I do like the greens produced by HTC Cam, Google pink/reds are better, all comes down to personal preference.

Google's HDR+ does great job in extreme HDR situations , but for my eyes HTC's HDR boost does greater job keeping everything sharp , Google just destroyes every detail with noise reduction
Check the link for comparison

I know Pixel camera better but I've read all reviews on net and youtube and found that it always got over saturation during at low light or indoor environment like the sample provided from #2 if you view it carefully, you see a yellow cast in the whole photo with Pixel.
Indeed, U11 offers a natural tone overall, not Pixel in my opinions though HTC color might be a bit vibrant. If Pixel white balance isn't going wrong, yes it always perform better result. Good to know there is a modded google HDR+ now, donno if the yellow tone problem fixed or not.
U11 still got some advantages like OIS and dual pixel focus which is important to me too. Wish we'll have modded U11 camera in the future.
EDIT:
https://www.xda-developers.com/google-camera-hdr-ported/
It's glad that we can use Pixel HDR+ now on all SD820/821/835 devices without root. It's Google camera 4.4 apk and I've installed it on my U11(no root atm) and it works both HDR+ photo and 4K recording, no crash no FC. So if you prefer the style on Google HDR+ this is your way to go together with the benefit of OIS and dual pixel focus over Pixel phone.
Will OIS and pixel focus work on the google camera?

OIS does work and Pixel focus I assume you mean the "lens blur" function? if so, it also works.
The only thing that is not working in GC is slow motion.

Hmm I was really steady , I have very steady hands and I can take 1s shutter , and I really tried it multiple times to make sure if it's really does reduce the noise and smudge the details or if it's just one bad shot , but actually all of them are the same
I really like it in extreme HDR situations though , so if HTC's upcoming camera update didn't boost the camera even more then maybe I will use gcam for really extreme HDR situations
I have tried it in broad day light and the dynamic range is really improved.
I will try it tonight but if it fixes the overexposure, it will really be the ultimate camera phone.
stock app
Pixel app
Edit : Now tried in the night, the difference is even greater. With the HTC U11 camera app, all the details are burnt near light sources, while it is not the case with the Pixel camera app.
stock app
Pixel app
For me it is clear, the Pixel app will replace the stock app for my pictures. The HTC U11 camera module with the Google Pixel software, I think we have the best possible camera on a phone.

I strongly disagree.
Look at this window which is aproximately 150 meters far from me. With the Pixel app, I can clearly see he is watching TV. I am impressed. With the stock app, I see... nothing.
And with the Pixel, I don't find any detail loss.
stock app
HDR+ app
For me stock camera is better on daylight situations.
For nightshots GC wins.
So i will use them both.

Clear case...
To me both apps got pros and cons. Stock cam tend to over exposure and in the opposite way google cam like to under exposure.
It really depends the atmosphere you're shooting and maybe your matter of personal preferences. In general, I like stock a bit over exposure to make the photo brighter except in some cases the high light area got washed out. Noise reduction in google camera is better, stock cam got many noise.

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Not so bad.

Agree, portrait mode is terrible, also all the photos add some kind of softening filter. Only good thing is that you can edit the center of the photo so you can move the bokeh effect.

Well I use open camera mostly due to options. At low light I've found that the image quality is GREAT if you use 4MP(16:9) checked with 9MP and 12MP(always at 16:9 ratio).
In 4MP at very low light I was super impressed(always 100% jpeg quality in the open camera app). Test it yourself, it worth your time. Just make sure you have a steady surface
EDIT: uploading pictures 12MP, 9MP, 4MP
Image difference 2-3 seconds apart - 9:00pm (4MP>12MP>9MP). Don't know why 4MP is so much better(less MP is worse than 12MP)

Well if you want optical zoom you still need to use the stock camera, 4K rec? you can but I pref 1080p also I do like to adjust the bitrate of the video and audio and open camera does have that. I use to use this app to my 1+1 too
I like to customize everything and miui camera well ..2-3 settings at best
P.S. Open camera also doesn't have panorama but talking to the dev and said he's planning to include a panorama soon - Did you check the low light quality in 4MP? impressive(compered to higher res)
