Is there any possible way to get wifi hotspot on the sprint model via software or apn - LG V20 Questions & Answers

The main feature that I would love to get from this phone is Wifi Hotspot without paying sprint extra. I have an unlimited data plan already.
My phone was paid-off so I got my MSL
I tried the code ##33284# (##debug#) no MSL needed or edit options
-Active APN Connections
--internet
---APN type default,mms
I can see the setting but can't edit APN type to default, mms, dun
I tried the code ##3282# (##data#) MSL required to edit
-APN Settings
--internet (selected edit and entered my MSL)
almost all the APN settings seen in debug are missing. APN type is missing.
Is there a hidden menu or something? Can we use the shortcut maker like we did on the LG G4?

My guess is that it's not going to be a simple thing. I used to use PdaNET for this on Verizon and 7.0 killed it, and from the limited I've read on their pages about it, it doesn't sound like something they're likely to get around any time soon. That to me says that it's not an easy one to break open, so... I'm not keeping my fingers crossed yet, but I would love the world to someday prove me wrong.

I have unlimited on sprint and I'm not charged extra to use hotspot. At least I haven't been yet. Maybe something has changed?

You are using wifi hotspot on your v20 without paying extra for it?
You are lucky. I had to get a custom rom on my LG G4 that allowed you to edit the dun.

Try 277634#*#
Works on T-Mobile Variant. If it works for you there should be an APN unlock menu in there.

Ask any other sprint user and if you try to connect to hotspot it will error out. Somehow sprint thinks that you are paying for the service and unlocked the feature on your phone.

Maybe I need to triple check into it, because I can promise it works without issue. I'm going to try my girlfriends phone when I get home and see what happens with hers. She's on my plan as well.

Seems like root access was achieved. Now things are looking good. http://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/development/ls997vs995h910-dirtysanta-bootloader-t3519410

Does wifi access require Mobile Hotspot?

From the Sprint site: "Sprint Mobile Hotspot add-on required to access Wi-Fi on the device".
Does that mean if I want to use my home wifi to browse the internet on the phone, I can't unless I pony up $30.00 more for the Mobile Hotspot? I'm sure it can't be that way. No smartphone locks out wifi unless you buy a tethering plan. I use wifi all the time on my iphone as it's much faster than the 3g data network is.
http://now.sprint.com/evo/
It's in the fine print at the bottom.
Based on sprint's past phones you will be able to connect to your wifi network at home. You will not be able to connect your laptop with wifi tethering to the phone without the addon hot spot.
I believe it is referring to connecting other devices to the evo via wifi.
I think this is a case of reading too far into the words regardless if sprint was ever dumb enough to do it once we have root it wouldn't matter.
im not to worried about it... gonna be easy as **** to hack that feature in once root is attained
I fear that the OP may be correct; as the OP points out, it does state the following at the bottom of Sprint's webpage (emphasis added):
"Sprint Mobile Hotspot Add-on required to access wi-fi on device"
I am also concerned that Sprint may use this as an excuse not to update the EVO 4G to Froyo 2.2, because I believe Froyo 2.2 provides tethering and wifi hotspot capabilities built into the ROM.

HTC sense on the Hero (1.5) also included a wired tethering feature... sprint just had HTC disable it on their firmware... why wouldnt they do the same with the evo?
I've been under the impression that if you root your device in the future, there will likely be some type of hack that will allow you to use the mobile hotspot feature anyways, i don't think sprint or htc, unless they released some kind of update to stop this(which i'm sure you can stop this update from going through right?), you would be good to go...But, take what i say with a grain of salt because i'm new to this whole rooting ****, I've never personally owned a android handset either.

Once you root your device you can do whatever you want to it, once it's rooted only thing sprint has control over is what passes between your phone and them, data, calls, etc, not your device
I'm running android on a device that isn't even supposed to run android, and as far as sprint is concerned they think I still have WinMo 6.1 on this thing.
I asked my Sprint rep the other day when I was adjusting my plan. Wi-Fi will be "incoming only" and active on the EVO out of the box. If you want "outbound" (i.e. tethering, hotspot etc.) then you pony up the $30.

Yeah i don't know why people would think you would have to pay to be able to use a wifi network of your own(or someone elses), no one would ever charge for that, and i don't even think you possibly could without heavy HEAVY modification of android.
OMG! I'm also new to all of this... I have a few questions? They may have already been answered, pls excuse my ignorance on the matter. I have a Huawei Ascend M860 Android 2.1 (I think) I'm trying to get the mobile hotspot on it (BTW how do I do this?) but I'm afraid to do anything because I dont want to get caught paying more money or finding out that the insurance I'm paying extra won't be valid anymore? I want to know what happens if I "root" my phone will they find out I've done something to it? LOL. sorry every1 but I'm not trying to have 2 bills to pay by the end of the month if I can connect to the internet on my laptop by using my phone. Thnx.
How did everybody here get to know so much about these things. What did u study?

[Q] Getting Frustrated Trying to Root

I think i might be losing my mind. I unfortunately updated to 2.3.3 without thinking. Now that I am trying to root my phone, ive got some questions.
1. When it comes to CF-root, what program do I use to flash a tar file? All I can come up with is Odin, but thats only for samsung. I got started on post #2 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12489034
2. I tried using SWUpgrade to put the tar file on my phone, but I couldnt figure out how to get my evo into "Download Mode". Does this even exist on the evo?
3. And lastly, is there a way to just get the hotspot app to work? Because that is the only reason I want to root. I get about 6-7MBs down with 4g on at my apartment and I want to use my phone as my ISP instead of paying for DSL\Cable.
Sorry if these are all stupid questions, but Ive spent all day glued to this screen google-ing and searching till my fingers are numb to no avail. Your comments are much appreciated

This is the HTC Evo forum.
"Download mode" "odin" even the instructions you linked to are all Samsung based.
what he said ^^
also....since you updated to 2.3.3 you cannot root as of this time. the devs still haven't found the exploit to give root on the Evo. So all the methods of rooting that are out there right now cannot be used on the OTA 2.3.3 (they are for 2.2 and lower).
just be patient...they'll find an exploit soon enough....hopefully
Yea, I figured as much. So, while Im waiting to be able to root my phone, is there still the possibility to hack\unlock the hotspot app?

If so this is a good easy thread for rooting.
I'm sure it will be updated as soon as rooting is possible on 2.3.3.

I am with you there. My DSL went up to $49 from a low of $27. I am canceling the DSL and I am contemplating just paying sprint for the hotspot until somebody finds a hack for 2.3.3.
Sprint $30 vs Comcast $49. Blo-me Comcast.
Why not use one of the tethering apps on the marker? Search 'tether' and you will get some options. Last I checked, they require pc software, but you can try them out and see if they work for you.

Why not just pay for the hotspot feature? It's $30.00 a month, which is still cheaper than your DSL or Comcast.
I have a work laptop that doesn't allow pda net or easy tether. They made me uninstall the tray software for easy tether.
Gonna go get my other pc from the house tonight. I have three residences, this one has minimal amenities. This way with my own pc and at least I can tether visa usb.

IF you have an Evo with 2.3.3 / Gingerbread... no, you can't root right now. There are many threads with this discussion. All the same answer. You cannot use any known method to root. You cannot downgrade unless you have a good friend in HTC.
Odin is for Samsung. The Evo is by HTC. HTC ≠ Samsung.
There is no temporary root for Gingerbread Evo, no permanent root, no S-off method. Unrevoked is working on it. If rumors are to be believed, they are close.
Gingerbread Evo = UNROOTABLE (currently)

I've had and LG OG and currently use the Nexus 5 but ordered a G2 for my alt. phone. I've used FoxFi wifi thethering app for most of my devices and it always worked great until I tried it on the LG OG. On the Nexus 5 its fabulous! On the LG OG I had to use TrevE Wifi Tether Mod ( FoxFi worked but only the USB tether). Those two are the best for masking wifi tether usage but your data is still clocked. FoxFi needs no extra configuring but you have to download PDAnet and install it on your computer so the app can connect ( easy no prob ) TrevE's does have to have some configuring. When I get my G2 I will let you know better or you can tell me if you go ahead and try them. I also plan on using ICE Rom when I get mine. FOR BOTH APPS MAKE SURE YOU SET UP A PASSWORD BEFORE YOU CONNECT TO ANOTHER DEVICE.

Pretty sure visual voicemail is something you have to subscribe to and pay for monthly. I think there's a promo right now where it's free for 30 days. You might be getting this error because you aren't actually subscribed.

I called Verizon support and after two hours of trouble shooting the tech was able to find out the feature code for visual voice mail has changed and would need to be updated by a different department. She put in the request and said this could take anywhere from 72 hours to 2 weeks to be resolved. And a factory reset does not fix this issue! It is on Verizon's end.
I had the same problem after updating. I spoke to tier II support and they reported to the software engineers. Tried to use VVM again a few minutes ago and now it is working.
The new Premium VVM is more like Google Voice and the Standard VVM is the same as the OLD Premium VVM.
Here is a SS of what it looks like now.

You must go onto your Verizon account and switch from "Visual Voice Mail" @ $2.99 to "Premium Visual Voice Mail" @ $2.99. Once I did that all was well.:good::good:

If you were using "Basic Voice Mail" then you will select "Basic Visual Voice Mail" under your features on your Verizon account. That is the free version.
Your basically having to read provision it. That's why you have to go to the mobile site or tech support to select the proper voice mail feature

Built-in Caller ID Hidden but can be turned on

Pardon me if this is already posted but I'm sitting in the hospital bored and figured I'd dig around to see if this could be enabled on the Tmobile variant of the s7(edge).
During the announcement they showed off the incoming caller ID by whitepages which is quietly hidden away so that Tmobile can sell their caller ID service. It is still on board though.
1) Download an activity manager. (Such as https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sika524.android.quickshortcut)
2) Let it load then search for the word identify.
3) A single result should show up under phone settings.
4) Launch it and enable the setting.
5) Haven't had the chance to test yet but as long as the framework is on board it should work.
This setting is normally under advanced settings for the system but hidden by Tmobile.

I understand carriers have their own service, but this kinda stuff should be illegal. Once my phone is paid off, it should be treated as an unlocked phone and the carriers shouldn't be blocking features or services that come with the phone.
Whitepages ID is working straight from T-Mobile on my Galaxy S7 Edge. Not blocked or anything. It's not perfect as the website is also not but it works
If I'm right, and I'm never right, this is probably to enable the Google proprietary caller ID feature suits TMobile has their $3.99 a month caller ID feature Google disable this and our phones for T-Mobile my guess is that right there turns it back on but you also have to have the service enabled somehow as in maybe a Google Voice phone number something like that

This is what I am currently doing, I just find it baffling that we have free services that we can use as part of a product we bought but we have to download and app to use it, even do it should be part of our dialer. But because the carrier is stuck in 2007, before smart phones, when you had to pay for ringtones and text messages and caller ID!
