Moto Z Front Facing LED - Moto Z Play Guides, News, & Discussion

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, but the Moto Z does have a front LED light that can be activated by changing /sys/class/leds/charging.
It seems to be activated when flashing in fastboot (?), and is a small white light between the camera and speaker. The Moto X LED app seems to work with root permissions. Unfortunately there's only one brightness, so the brightness control doesn't work.

i've use this since moto x style, z play also can use, but no option for missi call / message

Use light flow legacy for led for missed notifications.

I'm using Moto Led Enabler (root required).
With this you can choose which app enables the led.
Not the most stable app at the moment but does the job.
I'm currently only using it for hangouts, gmail and missed calls.
Every couple of days it needs a kick in the rear to get going again

Seems good, I do miss the light on my old S4.

Strange, it ticks all apps after close and open. And the LED did not go off. Is there some special setting necessary?

Thanks for your tip.
I installed the Moto Led Enabler is working now.

I use Light Flow Legacy with great succes. The LED blinks with every notification I want and it works together with Moto display. It needs root though.
First install the app. Go to the setting and enable 'root modus' and 'use root on every action' (or something like that, I use a different language on my phone). Then go to notifications and set charging led to 'only' and brightness to 255 for every notification. That's all

So it's required to have a rooted phone, right.

I guess it's not possible to access the LED without root. Not with this method anyway. So root is required for light flow legacy to work yes.

How to set notification led color?

I noticed (unless it was my imagination) 2 different colors for my notification led (which I was pleasantly surprised to find), Gmail is like a light blue, and I think it was fb that was regular blue, so is there an app to set the led color for each app?
Or at least see all the colors it can display?

You can use LightFlow which allows you to control the notifications (light, sound, vibration) for a ridiculous amount of apps. Works perfectly on the Nexus 10, I've used it on my Galaxy Nexus forever. It's a phenomenal app. That's the lite version, there's also a pay version which unlocks more features.
+1 for lightflow, I use it on my phone its great. Trying it for my N10
I'm pretty sure some apps have built in customization for the led color, I've seen it in the facebook and facebook messenger app.

It works very well. Prior to configuring lightflow notifications were not illuminating the LED. After setting up lightflow all is as it should be.

I looked in the Facebook settings but all it had was a toggle to enable notification light, no to change the color.

lol.. well I had found this app before starting this thread, however it seemed like it was messed up because it kept showing a light when I had no notifications. Turns out it was "No signal," and after disabling everything in Light Flow, I can test the led for colors.
I suppose you cannot use any other apps that Light Flow doesn't have? for example Facebook or Google Voice? I don't see any way to add an app. oh well.

You can't add programs but the paid version has like over 300 different apps I think. Well worth the dollar or two. I use it for Google Voice on both my N10 and GNex and it works perfectly. If it's not there it's likely due to being the lite version as mentioned above.

Craigsnotifica goes purple. (Edit: On my S3) Try that.
If you couldn't tweak the color led light for Facebook, go to Setting -> Notifications -> Light
If you're willing to root and flash a custom ROM, many feature the ability to control led and set custom colors on a per-app basis. From personal experience, I know that the AOKP ROM by Task650 and Ktoonsez has an awesome interface for doing so.

Light Manager works for me on all those. You do need to uncheck some of the stock led options in the settings. Don't disable, click on the words notification light and the individual selections will appear. Uncheck all the stuff you have changed the color on.

I can't get light manager or lite flow to work. I read I might need to do a factory reset, but want to avoid that.
Basically in either app, the test mode doesn't even work. I turned all the notifications off but left the notification light on. I know the light works and they light up when enabling them there. Gmail never works and same with Google voice. The calendar and text do work.
Anyone have thoughts?

I did a another factory reset. Lite flow didn't work at first, but it ended up working. Just make sure you install it before anything from the play store. I bought the full version so i could control Google voice. Well worth it in the end. I'm still ironing out the settings, but it works well now.

Let us know how it's working for you in a couple days.
I had it working on mine as well, but always after a day or two, it starts giving phantom notifications (the LED lights green, even with no notifications) and also using green for any notifications (it completely ignores the custom color setting).
I'd love to hear that it's still working for you in a few days. I hate not really having use of the LED for my needs (such a waste of a multicolor LED )

Yes, both Light Manager and Light Flow works for me. I'm rooted with the notifications lights turned on but the individual lights off. 90% of the time it would display the correct colors but sometimes it will go to the default green for my gmail. My charging color light always works. Make sure the options in Light Flow are correct. Check root mode if you are rooted, run in foreground, and reset color before change. I also have the reduce wake lock checked, and it's working for me so either way should work. To test just set the charging battery notification to blue with it constantly on, then plug in the power. The blue led should turn on.
I've also tried Light Manager and Lightflow and I've got nothing. LED's working with stock notifications, but not with third party software.
Does anyone have ideas for solutions or do I need to factory reset my phone (will that solve it)?
I had the same issue: native LED notifications worked (email, calendar, charging, etc.) but no 3rd party apps (BBM, WhatsApp, Kik, IM+, etc.) and Light Flow would not work. Light Flow was working in that I could hear the sounds, but no LED.
I had been using Light Flow on a GS3 for over a year so I was familiar with the app but nothing I did got it working.
Finally, I decided to do a factory reset; however, I first turned off "save settings to google servers" (paraphrased) and turned off "automatically restore apps and settings" (paraphrased). After the reset, I re-installed Light Flow first and then a 3rd party app (BBM, I think). Did a quick test and Light Flow was working! I then reinstalled the rest of my apps and for the most part everything is working.
Only two slight issues: my Email LED is green rather than the yellow I set it for (although it seems a very bright green, I wonder if they are both working?), and my Calendar reminder does not work at all (natively or using Light Flow). However, I am not sure if the issue is that I am using a replacement calendar app (DigiCal+) or a Calendar Snooze app. Not a biggie though, I am happy that my IM and 3rd party app LED's are working, especially since I am running the stock launcher and my notification badges aren't working for non-native apps (I used to use Missed It! with Nova Prime).
Oh. Same issue. Even the test mode does not work . And i don't want to reset at any cost
Even whatsapp notifications do not work. that's bad.
Might run going into settings > general > accessibility and check to see if Lite Flow or Lite manager is on in the services. Hope this helps

[APP] Light Manager Compatibility

I am the developer of Light Manager. It is an app to configure notification LED color and its flashing frequency for different notification types.
I noticed that there are quite a lot of Nexus 5 users are using Light Manager app. Almost comparable to Samsung devices which Light Manager is designed based on. So I would like to make it fully compatible with Nexus 5. One major bug that users reported is the WhatsApp notification LED does not turn off even after notification has been read or cleared. I think it happens to other notification as well.
I don't have a Nexus 5 to test. Could someone willing to help in doing some beta testing? You may PM me or send me an email. I will send you the install apk for beta testing.
Thanks in advanced.
Actually I only start to have problem after update to 5.8, I am using ART
p.s. I got the same problem on hangout, not whatsapp
I have no issues with light manager but I don't use whatsapp or art.

You mean the LED notification for hangouts remains blinking even after you have read the message? If you are using normal mode, did you enable "Allow Recreate Notification" in Light Manager > Hangouts option?

This has to be done at the firmware side instead of application.
Light Manager can support it if manufacturer allows it.

Will custom notifications sounds be implemented in future releases or the donate version?

Sometimes whatsapp notifications keeps blinking even after clearing the notification. It's needed to restart the light manager app.
It would be nice to have a led notification when receiving a call like light flow does.
There is no charging indication too. But I think it's a problem of nexus and not the app.
I keep using this app anyway, I use since a had a galaxy s4.

There's no continuous led when charging.
The s4 behaviour is: when charging, red led continuously, when fully charged green led continuously.
In my recent experience with nexus 5, I can see that, with the stock kernel, it's impossible to have continuous led, only intermittent.
With custom kernels, like Franco or faux, we can see in changelog that there is continuous led implementation.

You can try go to Light Manager > Advanced Settings > Static LED and select option 2. That will give you somehow continuous red LED (In fact it is just 8s on 2s off as reported by other Nexus 5 user).

Lightflow makes screen on 6P randomly show notifs when just sitting there???

Anyone else have issues with Lightflow making the phone screen turn on randomly when sitting on a table? The colors for the notifications are correct, but becausue of the screen coming on alot randomly this is going to kill the battery life. I even enabled a setting to reduce this in light flow but nothing works. Does anyone have lightflow working correctly?
Thanks!!
At the moment the only option is to switch off the ambient display. If there's an outstanding notification or one is getting updated it'll trigger ambient display and lightflow always has an active outstanding notification.
I've put a feature request in to Google to allow some control of when it triggers.
Can you star the issue here*
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=191786
I don't seem to have this problem. Ambient display only lights up on new notifications, even with the latest Light Flow with persistent notification. I do have issues with light flow losing control on a regular basis and then I just see the standard very slow white led blink regardless of notifications. Activating lock screen promptly fixes and then I see the appropriate color and blink rare from light flow.

Thanks for the explanation. Hopefully u guys find a workaround
I also have had probles with the ambient display turning on seeminly randomly all the time, I didn't know it was light flow..
On another note, I miss the feature were my screen would turn on when I get a text messge (but not dismiss the lightflow) so in case the LED wasn't attention grabbing enough the screen turning on would be. Nexus doesn't seem to do that, can lightflow do this? (turn on the screen for 2-3 seconds right after a new specific notification, say text message?)

Out of curiosity is building the app with the new api's what triggers the need for the notification? Reason I ask is the previous (lollipop api???) version was working fine without the persistent notification on Marshmallow.

Yes that's exactly it.
I'm bringing out a new play store version later today which will be targeting lollipop's API for people who don't mind loosing android 6 specific features (ie runtime permissions, camera flash control) but don't want the notification related issues of apps targeting android 6.
a fine trade off for me. Had to stop using the app because of that for the time being.
Absolutely fine with me as well. Thanks for the great work as always Andrew.:good::highfive:

6p LED light

I currently have the Nexus 6 which requires root to enable the notification light. I was looking online, it looks like the LED notification light will pulse and can be enabled via stock ? The video I saw showed a red light when a text came in, are there different colors stock, or would more customization require a custom ROM ? Thanks.
Certain SMS apps like Textra will allow you to customize the color of the LED notification on the 6P.
Light flow and many other apps control the led stock, non rooted. An than Roms even have their own personal led light settings. All work great on 6p.

Default is a light blueish/whiteish light.
I just got a Nexus 6P yesterday. It was already running Android N. Where is the switch to activate the notification light? The settings menu is different from what is shown for Marshmallow.
