What happened? Phone out for 6 months+ and barely any root solutions - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions & Answers

I just got my S7 Edge and when I was ordering, I didn't even think to look, I made the mistake of assuming there would be some root solution. Other than a long guide which essentially says "good luck" if you are on the latest software version (which I couldn't help because I just got the phone). What happened? I know the bootloader was locked, is that the main culprit here? Did all the modders just switch carriers and devices?
Are the "one-click root" days gone for Samsung devices? Also, can anyone advise an ETA on a root for PJ2? Sprint is charging, get this, $20 for 2 gig hotspot and $50 for 6 gigs...

Best phone I've ever owned. Zero dev support. I accepted it months ago. Root Solutions there but risky. Security just too tight on this one. What a shame too....

Yea unfortunately i did the same thing! I absolutely love the phone, but without root, for me i am barely able to harness half the power of this beast! I really hope something comes out soon. I was in a similar boat with my s6 edge+ but i at least had moar rom which i LOVED, and miss so much!

Same exact deal for me. I'm very tempted to return the thing. Most of my favorite features and apps require root. Right now i'm debating whether it's worth keeping the phone in the hopes that a root will become available soon or stick with my note 4 and sacrifice newer features and samsung vr.

Do you think that the Tubro will get rooted and unlocked?

Just decided to get the Turbo since the N6 is taking way too long to get released on Verizon. The black friday deals helped me get the phone for $50 today so I could not resist that deal for top of the line hardware.
What I am wondering though is what the community thinks about developer support for this phone? Do you think the bootloader will be unlocked? Do you think there will be root access?
If both of those are obtained do you think there will even be enough support for the phone to have some fun with ROMs? Honestly the only thing that I want to get my phone unlocked and rooted for is to get rid of all the bloatware that verizon put on my phone. The ONLY reason. The OS is stock enough for me already but I want to get rid of all those crappy red apps along with all these amazon promotions...
So what do you think? Is it possible to get rid of the bloatware without rooting or unlocking?

Disabling apps seems to work just as well as Titanium Backup. The only real difference I can think of is that the apps are not deleted from your phone, so while being able to remove bloat without root, it appears we still cant gain the used storage space back.
Here is a useful guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-turbo/general/guide-how-to-disable-verizon-apps-droid-t2948849

Disabling apps is a good option without root. Hard to say about root or BL unlock. Right now its seems extremely unlikely it will happen any time in the near future. Only hope is that the Moto Maxx will get a developer following which is close enough to Turbo.

I have this thought in the back of my head that the Moto Maxx and its unlocked bootloader will help us obtain root and bl unlock on the turbo. Its literally the exact same phone, I feel devs may have enough freedom to play around with the files of the Maxx, and find some similarities and exploits usable on the Turbo. Just my thought. Its the same phone and with supported unlock. Its so close to our turbos.
We might get root, and probably will at some point down the road. I doubt we will ever get an unlocked bootloader. The work that goes into doing that is very substantial, and with this being an exclusive device, is very unlikely.
Question for the OP.... why wouldn't you just buy the Nexus 6 straight from Google? Why is everyone talking about having to wait for Verizon to get it? But it from Google, and activate it on your account. Simple as that.

Have you tried getting it from the Play store? lol. It's like hoping to win the lottery, except you have to play all the time, every second of the day.
if no devs working on Droid turbo.we will never ever see bl unlocked or root
like happens with Droid maxx
I'm on an old contract with a family plan and we pay $100 for the plan and $30 per smartphone. From how I understand it the plan does not make you pay for the phone over time. When you upgrade you just get that money off. So I'd be paying $400 extra for the Nexus than I'd have to.

Plus the deals they had today were just TOO good. $200 off a turbo? I couldv'e "bought" the 32gb version for free.
Don't get me wrong. I love the phone. Easily the best 5.2in phone out there. I just want to root to help battery even more and help get rid of apps I don't use while adding a few features I will.
I too jumped on the 64gb turbo yesterday. After trading in my OG Droid for $100 off the phone cost $60 after tax.. Comparing this to the N6 isn't fair.. The N6 is huge. As much as I want Nexus, and all that cones with that I just can't use a 6" phone on a daily basis..

I was really excited for the N6 since it was first announced. Being 6'5" I was sure I'd love it. Went to the store the other day and I just couldn't shake how silly it looked in my hands. Such an enourmouse device. Screen was amazing though. I wish it was 5.7" and the same shape. Then it would be slightly smaller than the Note 4 since it makes better use of screen size efficiency. That would have been perfect IMO.
Now I'm hoping the turbo gets the Dev support it needs so I have the best of both worlds!

I get taking advantage of discounts / contracts. I was just saying, I see a bunch of people saying they can't wait any longer for the Nexus to come out on Verizon, when you can already get it from Google or eBay, or Amazon... and use it with Verizon. Heck, you can but it from T-Mobile, and use it with Verizon. And was wondering why people keep saying they can't wait any longer for Verizon to carry it, when that has no impact on it working with their network, and only impacts getting it either at a 2yr agreement price / spreading payments out over 2 years.

New Variant (ME375CL) released into the wild April 2015

This is the model AT&T will be carrying starting April 10th. Seems like a watered down version of the ME572C plus LTE connectivity:
Press release
Too noob to post links... sorry!
K00X?
Well that's strange... I picked one of these up today from AT&T and the model listed on the box and back of the device is K00X.
Now I don't know what to think. When I do a search for that I only get results for Asus Fonepad 7. But the box is clearly labeled Memo Pad 7 and the device does not appear to be equipped to make calls.
Now I'm trying to remember where I saw the "ME375CL" designation. I know if you search for this on Asus' website the correct specs for the device are shown, whereas K00X doesn't return anything.
Kingo Root did not root.
Towelroot failed to make it ra1n.
RootZenFone reported "This is for ZenFone only".
Dose anyone no how to root it?

I am curious of this as well.
AT&T is "giving" this away in a promo now so there might be an influx of people searching. Mark me up as one of them.

Right, that's how I got mine... I already have a Nexus 7, but figured for 99c (well, plus $10 a month for LTE), why not. Have 14 days to return if also. Not sure if I really need another tablet, but I guess I will need to decide pretty quick though lol.

Same here. Picked mine up yesterday for $0.99 as it seemed like a good deal. But definitely don't want kitkat on it. Any news as to whether this has been rooted for Lollipop or Marshmallow?
Thanks.

To date, no root, no lollipop or marshmallow, at least that I've found. Issue seems to be that even though it's a memo pad 7 its an ATT-specific variant that's different enough that the standard rooting tools for the Asus memo pad do not work.
On the plus side, as already mentioned since att is basically giving these away they'll be more out there so possibly some development may occur soon.
Realistically, I'm leaning toward taking mine back - sure it was only $0.99 but I've already got a nexus 7 and do I want to pay ten bucks extra a month for this ( for the additional LTE device) when I really don't need it. All things things considered it's a pretty neat little budget level tablet and if I didn't already have the N7 I'd probably be keeping it for sure... on the fence right now though...

EDIT - I will say this, the MP7 smokes my Nexus7 in regards to battery life.
Fiddled around with some rooting tools for the Memo Pad and Fone Pad, ie mainly the temp tethered recovery solution just trying to flash the SuperSU zip... everything seems to work except the custom recovery never launches, probably due to there not really being a recovery out there for this model. I tried various memopad/fonepad versions of twrp and cwm but nothing seemed to work. .
I've got until Thursday to return it - my luck someone will figure out how to root it Friday lol. But, I don't want to be paying $180 over the next 18 months for a tablet sitting in my desk drawer either.
Well my two weeks ended today, so I took it back... no point in paying $180 over the next year and half for something I would rarely use, it at all.

Anyone know where to get a stock ROM for this thing? I've got some kind of corruption issue that doesn't seem to be resolved with a factory reset, I think, and I would like to get the built in recover to reload the OS from the MicroSD card if possible. Asus wants me to sent it back in to them but I'd rather fix it myself. Any pointers to a copy of a recent stock ROM?
Thanks!
I got the same tablet (ASUS K00X) from AT&T and tried all the rooting solutions for the Memo Pad 7 i could find, but nothing worked. I guess we'll have to wait a little longer before getting this tablet rooted.
I don't even care about rooting it. Stock ROM is all I need..

Anyway to network unlock this ME375CL from ATT? Would like to use it while travelling....
I too need to network unlock mine. Might just have to pay for an unlock code, sadly it's hard to tell what sites are legit or not for that service.

I actually submitted an online unlock request to AT&T (after their system was messed up for 3 days) and they sent me the code for free within 2 business days. I was really surprised, I thought it wouldn't be eligible for unlock since it was an un-used Go-Phone device. I guess they were feeling generous. Works great on T-mobile, although the process of getting the free 200mb of monthly tablet data was a chore. Have yet to use it, I don't really need it for anything (tab automatically connects to my phone hotspot), just figured it was cool to have for free.
any how to on installing Xposed on a KK OS of this tablet?

Sucks, I did the same today and I got this: "We're unable to process your request because the device is currently active on another AT&T customer's account."
But in fact, this was a prepaid tablet and not tied to any accounts...
Anyhow, I don't have an AT&T SIM and it won't even let me update. Is there a ROM that I can sideload to upgrade to Lollipop? I'm still on the initial KK build, has quite a bit of crashes.

Poll & Discusssion: Root? or Android/Samsung Pay?

So - S7s are shipping and Christmas for many of us Android users is almost here. I've rooted every Android I've ever had, but I really am considering leaving my S7 Edge stock to use Samsung Pay. I figured I'd put a poll out there and kick off any discussion the pros and cons of rooting. Thoughts?
I'll probably root eventually. I'd like to see how it performs out of the box first, but I bank with a local credit union that will likely never get Samsung Pay (They only got Apple pay last year), so that's not an issue for me.
I got the Note 5 a month and a half ago when we moved to T-Mobile, and came from the Nexus 6. The Note 5 is the first phone I had not rooted in the first week. There was an app to freeze the bloat I did not without rooting and I love my Android Pay. Only thing I miss from rooting my phone now is adblock. However I can live with the ads to keep the Android Pay functions.
nvm
I rooted and loaded custom ROM on all my phones except the Note Edge. the support wasn't there for it and AT&T really locked things down. but honestly, I didn't really miss much... I don't think I'll be doing any of that. I also want to try samsung pay and kinda wish my Gear S had the NFC to make that even easier. Might get S2 Classic 4G just for that honestly.
Adguard my friend Google it. I love Samsung pay and with the s7/e performing like they do I certainly don't need root. Maybe someday if CM comes along I'll consider it but for now Adguard is enough for me.
So the question still there... Samsung pay going to work on rooted device or not. Anyone tried?
Samsung Pay is a banking app and here in the UK my banking app (Lloyds bank) doesn't work with my rooted Galaxy S5.
Is not really an option always use an app to freeze the bloat (have used something like that call "Hide my Root") as was saying kxhaz
There should be alternative for that...

Unlocked Snapdragon available for Verizon?

I get that the S7 you can buy direct from Verizon is pretty much going to be locked down for a long time, if it ever gets broken. But it looks like a pretty awesome phone, and I'm genuinely thinking of trading up for one.
So, can I buy an unlocked version from somewhere that I can use with Verizon, one that allows root and xposed? Is the only option for this the Exynos version? Or are all of the phones locked down, even if they're not tied to a carrier?
Alternatively, if there is a way to get a rootable Snapdragon but I have to switch carriers, which carriers would be best for this?
Lastly, if there is no way at all to get a rootable Snapdragon variant, what's everyone's pick for the best new rootable phones? I've heard things about the G5, but that's starting to look closer to the S7 situation than anything.
Thanks for any info!
There is no rootable s7 that will work for Verizon. It's a waiting game at this point.

Or why all phones can't just have this as an option that is supremely hard to get to, but available for those who want to do it. Just have it trip something that voids the warranty, but make the user aware this will happen. I, for one, would most likely still do it, warranty be damned.

A few questions for the TMobile Variant

I'm pretty much sold on the thing, since I can unload my 3T at the same time--but a few questions first.
1: Can anyone test Samsung gear watches with the phone? I've read Samsung pay only works if you sideload the gear app, but would prefer it working 100% since I plan on staying unrooted.
2: VPNs have caused some issues on past carrier phones, basically using hotspot data rather than regular data. Can anyone just run a quick test to make sure this isn't the case? Mostly for use of Blokada.
3: Does RCS work? I know TMobile was rolling it out by device, but it seems this would be the perfect time to add it with the 6T.
Thanks!

1. Setup my gear s3 and it works perfectly. Everything is sideloaded as you install from the galaxy Wearable app.
2. This device already seems to have a private VPN set up as default, didn't touch it but it gives you the option to add.
3. RCS I'm assuming does not work and depends on tmobile actually activating them over an OTA update.

It's a TMobile issue not OP, sadly. No idea why they're doing it in stages and by phone.
My TMobile version does not have the hold power button down to activate Google Assistant feature. Is everyone else missing this?
I got some tmobile variant questions aswell?
Im from México but my brother is on vacation in USS.. in thinking on buying the oneplus but im a little confused about unlocking the phone... Some people say i have to use it with tmobile for 40 days to be able to unlock it even if i make the full pay for it.. othe people say you can unlock it the same day you full pay for it with the tmobile app..
So, can someone confirm who is correct with this because i wont like my brother to buy me the phone and then cant use it because of locked sim..
Also another question.. do you know if later we could install the international firmware on the tmobile version and get the updates directly from oneplus??

No,that is not possible. Perhaps some aftermarket ROM will be available later, but,no ,not at this time, official,or,otherwise.
Updates will come from T-Mobile.
If you're gonna buy it outright, why bother w/T-Mobile anyway, just skip the hassles & go for the unlocked version.....................

Because TMobile will allow you to buy the phone for 280 out the door with an approved trade-in device.
This is my current situation....I like to tinker and flash ROMs/mods. Hopefully if I end up with the Tmo version, I'll still be able to flash custom ROMs once development gets going for the device.

Well it looks like I'll be ordering from OP directly. It seems if I pay 280 and get the device I'll still pay 12 dollars and change a month until I hit the 570 mark to have the device "paid in full." I guess the 300 dollars goes towards savings on the bill. I read comments on here saying even if you buy the phone from TMobile, in order to "buy it outright" you still have to pay the full price of the phone. I need an unlocked bootloader and root so I guess I'll just pay OP directly.

Yeah it's really only a good deal if you're already or going to stay a T-Mobile customer. You wait a couple of months for the billing discount to kick in and you pay off your device in full. After that you'll still get your discount every month and you'll be able to unlock your sim card and unlock your bootloader.

I am a TMobile customer and plan on staying with them. Flashing the latest updates is kind of a big deal to me....I've been a Nexus/pixel user for years and am not use to being locked down by carrier restrictions when it comes to unlocking devices. I just don't feel like dealing with the clutter and hassle of having sift through the carrier's rules before doing what I want with my phone.

I agree, and I'm the exact same way. I've been on T-Mobile forever and have had a Nexus device since the Nexus 4. I had a Galaxy 4 for work and hated it.
This is my first carrier device pretty much ever. Before the Nexus 4 I was using the HTC HD2 and before that I was using Palm Windows and Palm OS devices.
Pretty much the way I see it is if this is too much of a pain, I can always sell it and go with my original plan of getting a used Pixel 2 XL on swappa.
I'll give it a chance. The price was just too good to pass. And I'm fairly confident in OP's laziness on locking down this phone. I have a feeling it will be pretty simple to swap over to the international rom, and if not, at most we'll have to wait a day for someone to repack the official rom removing the modem and/or bootloader. And if not, on to swappa it goes.
