AT&T S4 stock OS 5.0.1 - wifi turns itself off moment after turning it on - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I don't get what is going on here. I tap the wifi button in either quick settings or wifi settings, it shows on/green briefly (0.5sec), then switch slides back to off. I disabled tasker, thought something wacky could be going n there in my modes, but problem persists. Today I finally noticed that putting phone in airplane mode, then turning wifi on worked, wifi stayed on. After turning airplane mode off, now wifi keeps turning itself off again
Power saving is off
Wifi Smart network switch is off
In advanced Wifi settings:
notification off
passpoint off
sort by strength
keep wifi in during sleep is always
always allow scanning is on ( I think I have tried changing this in the past couple weeks and no effect)
autoconnect to at&t hotspots is on
I did some searching but couldn't find anything relevant. I have been burning up mobile data because of this! Any ideas?

Wifi wont turn off in sleep mode

Hi Guys,
I got my HD2 today and i have to say i am impressed!
I only have one problem which i am not able to resolve.
When i turn on WiFi, it wont turn off during sleep mode (when i turn off the screen). i need to manually turn it on or off. this is how it came out of the box.
I wonder if other HD2 users are having the same problem / found a solution?
I tried advanced config tool, and i unchecked the "wifi during sleepmode" setting, but after each reboot the settings just come back.
Any help would be appreciated.
Hi mate, you should look this

I thought that guy just want to keep WIFI on but you did.
thanks man but it does not help me with my problem. I cant seem to be able to get WiFi to auto turn off when in standby. the reg tweak will work until you reboot the device. after reboot the WiFi again won't turn off when in sleep mode unless I manually turn it off.
Bump.
Can any other HD2 owner please confirm if this is happening on his device too?
Same problem.
HDtweak and AdvanConfig does not work. After soft reset, wifi-on-standby is back ON (checked).
Been trying to find a Auto-Disconnect for GPRS(HSDPA) but the above 2 apps does not work too.
have you tried to change wifi power settings to high? I think it does work then. I guess the medium setting is something special...it keeps the wifi connection alive in standby, but also doesn't consume much power. I have an exchange connection active, so i always need an internet connection. The moment i turn on wifi at home, it stays on, even in standby, and my data connection over 3G disconnects. My exchange still works perfectly...and no huge power drain! My wifi power setting is on the medium setting...
Yes, I can confirm I'm encountering this issue too - on my HD2.
Strange, 'cos I wasn't at first, I'm sure - I remember the wi-fi notification icon flashing when resuming from sleep.
glenner05, can you confirm that you can get wi-fi to sleep please?
Hmm.. thought it might be connected to the htckeepwifionwhenunattended registry value but mine's set already to 0.
There're others trying to do the opposite!

Anyone else found a solution?
I think HTC made this by design. If you turn GPRS data off and leave Wifi on while in standby you will be surprised how low the power utilization is.
I tested and with GPRS data off and Wifi ON, in standby you lose about 2% battery per hour...that's nothing.
It seems that on the HD2 the Wifi power consumption is really optimized so no real need to turn

Mine is on default Wi-Fi settings and when it goes into standby, wi-fi goes off.

Yeah goes of in sleep mode, if you get wifi toggle, you can choose to keep it on or turn it off when you like .
Shame the grps is still a problem....
pgamble and jrvenge: you really mean wifi switches off on the device when it goes to sleep? Ie. you see it disconnect from your router or something?
jrvenge: what did you mean by, "if you get wifi toggle"?
clubtech: when I read your post I agreed with you, maybe. I can't now be certain I remembered correctly that I'd seen wifi reconnect. And yes, the power consumption does seem low
There is a cab floating about here that enables you to force the wifi on always or turn it off.
If you forc on it stays on, if you turn of it goes off.
Return to normal and the hd2 does its power saving thing, so im all sorted there, just need a timeout on the gprs now.
If you cant find it let me know. It works a treat.
can youplease post the cab ? I have been looking for something like this .
Sure pm me your mail and i will send it
GPRS Disconnecting software here fella's, tested and working on my HD2 100%
May also turn off wifi but i've not loked yet, just about to leave for work so will check later!! lol

Ok just tried and it does not do what we want with WiFi
Yes ... if device goes to standby, when it comes out .. you see wi-fi searching to connect again ... so it definitely disconnects and the reconnects when it comes on again.
Paul.
Yup your right!
If it's in balanced or best battery mode then it turns off in standby and reconnects/searches again when you press a button to bring up the lock screen.

[Q] Wifi Always allow scanning turns on automatically and shows in battery usage

Hi guys
I noticed countless times that randomly when turning on wifi and then turning it off, the "always allow scanning" under advanced options is ticked.
I noticed this because then under battery usage you will see wifi active even tho main switch is off and 99% of the time that is why.
Is it a lollipop 5.0 bug or is it some of my apps that can switch that option when they detect wifi has been activated?
Also, it seems that if i dont turn on wifi in the first place, that option never becomes active. Battery life is very good on my phone so not a deal breaker....
Anyone knows?
Thanks

Serious wifi issues!

Hey everyone, I've been looking for a solution for this problem since I got the phone and I can't find an answer anywhere. When I am connected to my WiFi at home, and I turn the screen off, about 30 seconds later my wifi and data shut off. I have "keep wifi on when screen is off" set to on. I disabled switch to network with weak WiFi signal. I have factory reset my phone about 5 times and did a warranty clam.
Mine does the same. It just has a very poor wifi antenna I guess.
my LG-V20 does this same thing sometimes its very frustrating.
Settings>battery and power saving>scroll down to "wifi" and move the switch to the right (turn on ignore savings settings) This will tell Android to ignore power saving on wifi and let it operate normally.

wifi always turning it self on

Ok my home internet is only a 2 mega bit connection at its best. Its less than 1 most of the time. So l use my data 99% of the time. Well l have gone in every menu and turned off the wifi from scaning, from staying on, and l have it turned off. Well l get home in the evening and what do you know my wifi has turned it self back on and I'm on my home network. It was off and l went into McDonald's and it connected to their wifi. This is with scaning off, wifi off, and wifi off when sleeping. Why does this always turn it self back on. My s4, note 4, s5, and now my s7 edge all have done this. Its VERY ANNOYING...
Is there anything that l can do to stop this. If l want to use the wifi (like when I'm at my brothers or moms house) i just want to turn it on and go but if l have it turned off l want it to stay off and not connect to wifi networks that are remembered
Had 2 apps that were turning on wifi. I turned thier permissions off. So after that I was downloading a large file. A few gigs. Anytime my phone screen turned off it would turn my Wi-Fi back on. So in order to get that to stop happening I had to tell my phone to forget my home Wi-Fi network. There's got to be another way

Can power saving mode affect wifi connectivity?

We just switched internet providers at the beginning of the month, Wifi was going in and out with our previous internet provider A LOT. Wifi and internet has been much better lately. But today I noticed Wifi went in and out when I go to unlock my screen it's off and once I unlock my screen it comes back on quickly. Is this because I have power saving mode on? I did a FDR a few days ago and it just started doing it tonight. It's only on my phone. Is there a setting I can find that will fix this?
Yes it's because of power save mode causes it to turn off Wi-Fi to save power.
I don't know of any fix except to turn off power save mode.
