Terrible Battery on S7 Edge? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

So I switched over from my OP3 to S7 Edge as it was supposed to be an overall upgrade. I used to get through a day of work (7:30am - 5pm) and still have ~40% battery. With the S7E I have to top the phone up before leaving work and keep it on battery saver. I changed the firmware from EE branded to unbranded and I am un rooted.

I was absolutely loving the battery life of my s7 edge until a couple of days ago when it started discharging at a ridiculous rate. I tried getting rid of a bunch of apps that I wasn't using but that had little effect.
Yesterday, I wiped the cache in the stock recovery (I'm also unrooted) and I'm back in business! I doubt I'll ever know what was going on (Android system was using 32%) but wiping cache is an easy fix.
My next step would have been a factory reset which I was planning on doing after Noughet lands officially. I'm happy to put that off as it's a bit more of a PIA for me setting up my watch and other peripherals..

I've wiped the cache in stock recovery and unfortunately it didn't help. As with you, a factory reset would be too much hassle at the moment, so I'm trying to avoid that route. It really is a nightmare to try and solve!

Is this battery life normal? I'm always on 4G with minimal gaming. Please tell. Thanks.

Your Android system us killing your battery, it shouldn't be first in your list, have you disabled all reporting , Samsung, google reporting diagnostic policy stuff, and have you disabled nearby device scanning

When you screenshot there is an option down the bottom left to "capture more".

I don't think I have! What should I be disabling specifically?

Settings/more connection settings/ nearby device scanning turn off
Settings/privacy and safety/report diagnostic info turn off
Those two alone will make a good impact on battery life/Android system drain and also turn off any reporting in Google settings also

You can also turn off wifi network notification in range
And turn off any advanced features you don't use in settings but your screen should be first in your list right now my screen has used 42% of battery and Android system in second using 18% which is acceptable

2% drop, I don't use AOD, I have the sd820 btw

If you guys dont care about warranty and stuff. I would recommend going to apc8 firmware of apf2(has some security issues like being outdated and such but if those dont matter to you then apc8 or apf2 is the way to go!). Im on apf2 rooted with prometheus kernel v.1.4 and here are my stats. Light usage like netflix or browsing but the standby is great!

I have 5h 30min screen time

I'll report my screen shots later tonight to see if it's improved. It was at 100% two hours ago and now it's at 80%, so a loss of 10% an hour still seems quite high? I've just checked and Android system is still consuming 23% compared to 9% for the screen. It's frustrating how some people are effected by this and not others.

So my battery has almost died and here are my stats. Any other tips to fix this?

What's connected to your phone during the day and what kind of apps do you use the most? Maybe we can find some more things to disable/find more battery friendly alternatives.

I recently started using a pebble but the problem has persisted since before then. Today I've sent about 10 whatsapp messages and sent about 3 snapchat. I've used the recent apps and used "closed apps" to shut them all. It's as if my phone won't go into doze.

Horrible battery life

Horrible battery life.
i consider myself well versed in phones. In the past year i have had a Gnex, HTC One m7, and a moto x. Just got my s5 last week, and im lucky to get 12 hours battery life with 1.5 hours of on screen time. I have all the gestures and 'smart' stuff turned off. i dont get it. I have a handful off aps that i use, and have used on every phone. the only thing i can think of is perhaps its the google now launcher? has anyone else on here gotten HORRIBLE battery life with that installed?
That is bad indeed. Ive been on wifi most of today, different locations, and still have 30% right now with close to 6hrs screen time.
I have the GNL installed and I have amazing battery. I have location on "GPS Only" and photo auto-upload turned off. Everything else is on. What's your signal like? Worst case, try a factory reset. Oh, and turn off Google Now.
Also, why does your phone have 7bars instead of 4 or 5? Is that a sprint thing?
it looks like your system doong a lot of stuff, your screen On time should always be hiher and number 1. have you done anything to your cellphone? apps, xposed modules? custom roms?

Not rooted, so nothing with exposed chewing up ram. I have GPS set to "battery saver". My signal at work is kinda 'meh' on LTE but 5 bars on 3g. My 4g speeds are about 15Mbps so it's not like the phone is spinnimg its wheels looking for data. I turned off location sharing from Google. So we will see how today goes.
Is 'GPS only' more battery friendly then 'battery saver' for location?
Attached is my app drawer. Nothing crazy...nothing that should be wake locking the phone....
Edit: I switched photos auto upload to only on WiFi only while charging last night as well. oh, I also charged to 100% last night with phone off using a USB 2.0 cable for a slower charge. If today goes poorly I'm going to try another battery, next step is hard reset with no 3rd party apps, then replace phone :\. I'll keep it updated.
trying a new kernel now to see if it changes anything as a test
Please keep us updated. I'm in the exact same boat as you.
Its "better" but not like it was before the update. Lost 20 % in 5 hours with 50min screen time
Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
much better
So its been much better today. See attached screen shots. Its not perfect but I have a big handful of apps syncing so 20hours on a charge is good for me. I mean, my moto-x got 20hrs, but that was on a highly optimized s4 pro processor only using a 4.7"amoled screen @ 720p. So if this 5"+ 1080p monster can get 20 with everything I throw at it im happy.
I think the biggest thing I did was settings - location - location services - google location reporting - off for this device.
The reason is GNL (GEL) was accessing location like crazy, so that helped.
I also made some other tweaks as stated in above posts, sorry I didnt do it scientifically by only changing one thing each day to pinpoint what it was. I turned off all of sammys 'smart' features and charged it to 100% on a 1A charger with a usb 2.0 cable with the device off. And turned off various other settings. Hope this helps.
The best thing I did for battery life was disable my Samsung account. The difference was incredible.

Yes they do. Kill the Samsung account with fire.
Although some things like the default Browser only sync with a Samsung account, not with Google.
ok, I will tell you, battery saver mode is better than gps only mode. usb 2.0 or 3.0 doesnt affect charging speed, its just for data transfer speed.
maybe your google account was syncing or maybe your gallery was syncing.
this kills and uses a lot of data and battery, also facebook... please do a favor and turn every notification off. also, use greenify to cancel all apps syncing. well only the ones that you do not use.

No it isn't. Unless you use navigation all day, GPS Only mode is by FAR more battery friendly. The battery saving mode turns on Google location tracking and all that stuff...you know, the popup that you agree to each time. GPS only keeps that off which saves your battery a lot more. It's the worst named setting i've ever seen.

You can`t use Google maps navigation with power saving mode that`s why I go back to my high accuracy setting however this didn`t change my battery stand by time by much I usually could go around 1 day and 20 hours on 1 charge depending on how much i use my phone with around 2 hours on screen time and some calls for probably 1 hour.
@op what software version you use because in the latest firmware for the G900F there is a battery improvement made so I do suggest to check your phone for software updates.
Other then that the battery life depends on how often you use your phone and for what.

Im on build 49h. However when i go to checl for a sw update I get this messege about unauthorized software. Im not rooted, no bootloader unlock, nothing. Ive never even plugged this into a desktop. I run gel and have selected ART in dev options as well as increased transitions to .5 and have usb debug enabled. Wtf?
Fixed: ART was the issue. I hate you samsung. Smh.
Edit: art was the issue with the "unknown software" issue, not the battery life/op

Battery Help

So I've had the 6p for about a month now and I'm absolutely loving the phone, but I have one huge issue which is the battery life. I read online that this phone is getting 6+ hours SOT, and every charge cycle I check my stats and I'm getting like barely 3 hours SOT. I feel like this shouldn't be happening and was wondering if anyone could clue me in on maybe something I'm doing wrong. I am rooted and running the latest Chroma and also using the latest elementalX kernel. I have Xposed installed which i feel shouldn't really be affecting battery life too much. I have amplify and greenify which should be boosting battery life but those are also not working. What I do on my phone is all day snapchatting, sometimes checking twitter and some would say heavy texting. If anyone could tell me why my battery isn't getting anything near the average it should be getting, or has any suggestions it would help lots!! Sorry for the long post, but i wanna resolve this issue
Hey, charge your phone to 100% (leave it charging for half a hour after it says that it's full). Then use it normally, and when it's almost empty, take screenshots of battery statistics and post here.
Also, what are your settings? Brightness, are you using 4G data constantly etc.
What I've read, Greenify messes up Doze.

Do you go off and on your phone a lot? Like check it, lock it, check it again? I guess stop starting would describe it? If so, then 3 hours is the expected screen on time for that usage. On constant usage you would get 4 hours+, for sure.

The screenshots could indeed be useful.
As you described, you use snapchat allot. Snapchat is a real battery drainer. It decreases screen time allot, because when snapchat is open, it enables both front and rear camera and gps and maybe even more things that I'm not aware about. So basically it enables everything thats power hungry on this device. If you want to keep snapchatting allot, I don't think you'll will get to 6 hours sot.
Maybe you can use a custom kernel. I personally use the latest Franco Kernel, that kernel has tweaked some stuff so the phone uses the battery friendly cores more than the power hungry cores, without having noticeable performance loss.
But as said a screenshot would be nice, maybe you can install better battery stats (it's on xda) for even more advanced stats.
And remove amplify and greenify, you get the same or better battery results, but keeping the phone more functional.

Phone Idle under Settings/Battery

What runs under "Phone Idle" on the V20. It's been the largest battery consumer for the last week of use that I've noticed. My wife's V20 is the same and I had my brother check his and his wife's V20.
I'm only asking because I'm not see great battery life like other have been reporting. I don't have live wallpaper, have only two widgets on the home screen. GPS is set to battery save, screen is set to auto but that doesn't even come close to chewing up the battery.
Sadly I feel like I'm still using my old 2.5 year G3 where it'll need a charge mid way through the day.

I agree with you. Although my phone is just beyond a week old and does have all my apps installed, a factory reset can't be the solution here. This is the typical "I don't know how to fix this" answer always given by manufacturers and carriers.

In the roughly 3 weeks I've had my V20 I've only seen this once where phone idle was higher than Screen. I started looking thru all running apps for 'keep awake' time being high and noticed Android OS had keep awake of over 2 hours when it's normally less than an hour after a full day use. I power cycled the phone and it stopped.
The weird thing was Android OS didn't show high battery usage even though something was triggering keep awake. Looks like the keep awake was causing phone idle to be high.
I'd look at everything in your battery usage to see if you have any high keep awake times.

Sorry did not mean to be short in my response. When you set up your phone did you restore it from another phone using the nfc bump thing? I did the same and my phone battery was the same way. Wouldn't last even half a day. After i factory reset and set everything up manually i get 18+ hrs with 7 hrs screen on time sometimes.
If this situation doesn't apply to you then maybe a reset won't help. But you have to understand your situation isn't normal.
Make sure Google now features are all turned off and not running in the background.

I'll have to go through the apps one by one like I did previously on my G3 and see. Now within the battery stats there is only a handful of apps like hangout, play music, chrome and camera. The rest is OS related so that's why I was curious what ran under Phone Idle.

No and sadly I was looking for that feature a week ago but couldn't find it so I had to individually install most of my apps I had on my previous phone...made for a long night along with the additional emails and configuration or icons and such.
I'll keep digging away at the phone...I really want to like this phone ?
Has there been a definitive resolution to "phone idle" battery drain? I just got a V20 2 weeks ago on sale for $360 and its a fantastic upgrade over the One+1 I've been rockin all these years, but I'm also suffering from mediocre life due to whatever phone idle is. Some forums (for other phones) say phone idle is related to your wireless signal. I'm still with the same carrier and frequenting the same locations and had no such battery drain with that old One+.
i finally discovered whats was goin on with me..
i had the same issue..
phone idle was topping my battery usage list
it turns google plays have this "locationmanager service " and locationwhatever" that kills your battery over wifi even with location button off
Go to locations/ 3 dots in top right corner/ turn off WiFi scan. See if that helps.
My phone has been suffering from poor battery life for quite some time now, here are the screenshots, Android OS has been this high on almost all battery cycles.
I disabled wifi scanning as suggested above and will watch the performance, does the community have any other inputs to fix this? View attachment 4212978View attachment 4212979

Phone idle is always the biggest battery draw on my phone too. I have minimal apps too. No Facebook or similar types of apps. I'm on a Verizon V20 stock with the latest security update. Is this normal V20 behavior to have phone idle consume more battery than everything else?
how about doze mode , isnt that meant to help with this sort of problem ? ( my phone is currently on a ship )

So what did you do?
Would also be grateful if anyone shared a solution.
I specifically have a SIM-unlocked Sprint model (LS997) which am using in Europe with another carrier.
Using it in LTE preferred mode drains about 10-15% overnight.
Using it in WCDMA preferred mode drains up to 5% per night (yes, wifi and cellular data OFF and many apps greenified) . So I'm really interested in how this can be fixed and achieve 0% battery drain across several hours.
Or maybe it's SIM-unlocked Sprint ROM related?? I can't root my phone since it has the Feb 2017 patch and is a ZV6.
I suspect rooting it and using another ROM would solve this + the annoying issue of not being able to send images via FB Messenger and Viber while on cellular data (I imagine the Sprint guys placed some kind of restriction to deny media transfer for these apps when using cellular data).
I have noticed this too.. wondered why "phone idle" takes most battery... any suggestions would be great!
I am also curious about the solution. Phone Idle is at top. Even without SIM card. 30% drains during a night (everything is disabled, but no airplane mode is on). I tried factory reset, reinstall older ROM, replace battery, use no app but still sucks.
hi
my v20 phone battery draining was about 1% per hour before (about 7% totally ) and recently increased to 2% during sleeping time overnight. (draining 15% overnight in sleeping state)
it seems that during day either performance off battery is decreased.(about 5h with wifi and screen on usage)
Fast charging while second screen is On , is slower than when it is off therefore when second screen is Off , fast charging goes better . exactly , first 30 mins fast charging makes about 40% battery charge(instead of 50%) and after 60 min leads to 85% and full charging taking place after about 100 min instead of 80 mins.
another important thing is that sometimes shades have been seen on the LCD that many users have complained about it.
phone information is :
Android security patch level: September 1, 2017
BASEBAND : MPSS.TH.2.0.1.c3-00045-M8996FAAAANAZM-1
KERNEL : 3.18.31
BUILD NUMBER : NRD90M
SOFTWARE VERSION : V10g-AME-XX
MODEL NUMBER : LG-H990ds
my actions are as follows :
phone is factory reseted. No third party apps is installed. [especially social media apps.]
battery calibration steps for not rooted phones is taken place.(turning off the phone and charging several times repeatedly).
testing battery drain in safe mode in done and didn't change results
turn off location services and location scanning for WiFi and Bluetooth scanning
turn off WiFi being On during screen is Off.
turn off auto sync, NFC, GPS etc.
not using auto brightness.
not using comfort view .
turn off location services and location scanning for WiFi and Bluetooth scanning
second screen is off during test overnight. (either with second screen is ON with faced down to lower brightness in other day test )
phone is in Air Plane Mode and all data services is off.
system apps like Google services and Play and Assistance is limited by permissions.
following are some advanced battery drain overnight figures of my phone for more analyzing.
any help with this issue is appreciated.

android system eating up my battery

This problem started a few days ago randomly. I never installed a new app or changed any settings. Started out while I was on a custom ROM. I tried another ROM and same thing. Tried fully erasing everything my phone and still no luck. Fully unrooted and went back to complete stock and Android system is still eating away. When I went back to stock I started the phone as new. Did not restore any apps. This is very frustrating cause it started out of nowhere and it doesn't want to go away no matter what I do. My phone is dying halfway through my day with Android system having double the % that my screen on time has
Thankzz.

Go into settings/accounts and see if anything is having a problem syncing. You should also turn off Bluetooth and set location to battery saving if you aren't using Bluetooth devices or GPS. Which build of Android are you using? Is the high battery drain when the phone is idle? In use? Both? Presumably you wiped the system cache after going back to stock?

Accounts are all synced good. I have wifi and Bluetooth scanning off. Location is on battery saving. And I'm on latest vendor 7.1.1 and usually it's when I'm using the phone. Idle drains some too but not that much of a difference.

Did you wipe the system cache? The only obvious thing that might drain your phone when in use is having the screen brightness set very high, but that shouldn't make a huge difference. You said the problem began when you were on a custom ROM but now you are fully stock? That's odd. Poor network connection can also cause high battery drain. I think if you reset your network settings it will force your phone to look for the closest available cell tower. Do you have GSM or CDMA service?

When battery is run down, what is displayed under battery>>android system>>use details? Please paste those details here. Are you in an area of extremely poor LTE signal? Have you ever used Better Battery Stats? Install it and run it for a full battery cycle. Your problem will likely be solved by a factory reset from the stock recovery.

Wouldn't high screen brightness go under the screen category and not Android system? I will reset my network settings and see if it makes a difference. I would assume flashing back to stop and erasing all data on the phone would do that and wipe all system cache as well.

I have BBS installed but without root I don't think it's much help? I will post screenshots when my battery goes down to about 15%
Some people have reported that the following works, although I don't understand why it would. Go into settings/battery/battery optimization/all apps/reset app preferences.
A factory reset shouldn't be necessary if you did a completely clean stock install but it also couldn't hurt.

Again, your problem will likely be solved by a factory reset from the stock recovery.
Weren't you running BBS when you were rooted and running multiple custom roms? Why not re-root now and use BBS or GSam?

I never use root even with custom Roms. I feel like I have no need for it. I did what was mentioned earlier and reset my network settings and also I disabled chrome and started using a different browser and so far Android system is the same percentage as screen. Not good but way better than before. BSS is also showing 2 hours "awake (screen off)" which is kinda alarming

You didn't see anything odd when you went into accounts and looked at syncing? For Google you clicked on the account and looked at each individual thing that gets synced under Google? If you were rooted you could try the Naptime app. I hated it but it has many fans. Basically it puts your phone in an extreme Doze state when you aren't using it, which might fix your problem. But if you want anything to work with the screen off you have to exempt it from Doze. Screen off in Naptime kills pretty much everything.
Same here. Everything stock. Just checked accounts settings and everything is good.
right now my top 5 is:
Screen 13% (2h:52min SOT)
Android System 10%
Android OS 9%
Facebook 8%
WhatsApp 5%
and in overall I've been around 40 min on Facebook, and you know that this **** consumes a lot, so go figure out how the hell is Android System and OS above it.

They are components shared by applications so that's rather normal to have them high.
I don't care about Android architecture much so only look at my SOT (which is nominal).
Those interested in why system and OS are high, should read the battery stats source code to see what's grouped under these and how it's being calculated.
I locked my bootloader last night and did a factory reset from settings. Right now Android system is at 5% and screen at 4%
I'm about to completely just give up

Android System tally is the sum total of a number of components. That it is "high" is not necessarily a big deal. The real question is: what are each of those components using? When your battery is run down, what is displayed under battery>>android system>>use details? Those usage details may help you find a problem if you even have one. Short of rooting and running a dedicated battery usage/wakelock app, these details may be the best you will get.
Decided to run purenexus and exkernel with root to get better stats. Battery is a little better but still not even close to how it used to be. Here are screenshots of everything . Woke up with 100% around 5:30 am. Went to work and the gym and wat he'd some YouTube.
The only way I found to fix this issue was to implement aggressive doze as soon as screen is off.
If you're on MM this can be done using apps like ForceDoze
And on Nougat using NapTime
Furthermore , I also implemented ElementalX kernel with Hawktail governor.
Since these changes my Screen is on top of the list in battery and maximizes my screen on time. Nothing else works for me.
The phone tends to stay awake needlessly without all these tweaks.

I really don't see anything wrong here, except awake time and maybe SOT. 4 hours SOT is very good for stock and you are at what 3.3 hours? I use the Hawk Tail governor profile in EX as well and it gives me just a small amount of improvement over stock settings. I use the stock rom, rooted with EX and get 4-5 hours SOT.

I think the 2 hours awake screen off is normal unless you use an App like Naptime to put your phone in Doze as soon as the screen is off. If you are really concerned with idle battery life you might want to try Naptime, but you may need to play with the settings so the phone works like you want, Naptime by default turns off everything that isn't excluded from Doze when the screen goes off. That includes music players and the fingerprint sensor.

Experiencing bad battery life, unsure why.

S7 Edge Exynos global version I am using.
So, usually I can get 30 hours on battery but today suddenly my battery dropped 1% every 30 minutes when not using it. I am using Nova Launcher with energy bar running overlay on screen; wifi on; cell on. Anything else isn't on.
Following I have modified:
Developer options: running processes set to no background processes.
WiFi scanning and bluetooth sharing off.
I really want to avoid factory resetting as last resort.
My standby time is usually 1% every 1 hour 19 minutes.
I've even used Greenify to force stop apps when I'm not using my phone.
I will provide screenshots soon.

I hope so too. I will update in a day or two how my battery is going.
In the future if I occur the same problem, then I will reply here.
Unfortunately my battery dies 1% every two to three minutes. Last time it was 4 or 5 minutes.
An hour screen one time should only be about 14% drain Max.
Really need to solve the problem quick

I've uninstalled FancyKey and Energy Bar temporarily to see if it gets better.
I'm unsure if it's the system or one of my apps draining it.

Download booster is on, but I turned off mobile data. It helps me see if I have 4G without changing to data manually.
I've greenified all apps and disabled as many stock apps as I didn't need.
Quite strange how everything was ok until yesterday quite annoying.

Usually social media, Facebook Twitter Instagram and Snapchat.
Messenger, WhatsApp.
I use some news applications too.
I'm wondering if fully draining my battery will restore it back to normal again.

That's a good idea. Completely drain your phone, then let it charge to 100%. Also, since your phone isn't rooted you might want to steer away from Greenify and just disable the apps you don't use through the phone itself and letting the apps sleep normally.

You are going to have worse battery life than most regardless because you have terrible signal. Your phone is constantly pushing power to the radio just to keep the connection alive. You'd probably gain a ton of battery life just by simply going to 3g or even 2g when you are on WiFi.
If you signal is still this bad where WiFi isn't available you'll have poor battery life compared to most on any phone.

Signal aside, I still had better battery life two days ago than now. So far I've been having 2 hours 30 minutes SOT and 10 hours on battery with only 40% left.
I never had to change signal to get good battery life before.

Is it Android System draining battery?
