Hi, I keep seeing that some people brick their phones due to the changes in the process. Question, Due to some battery drainage I am getting, I am trying to do a phone reset.
I currently have TWRP installed and rooted the phone using the jccuando method. What is the best way to reset the phone to factory so I can re-root again and do what I need to do without bricking? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Definitely boot to twrp via hardware keys or a boot to recovery app.. Do not do it from the settings menu. It will put you into twrp bootloop until you boot from the hard keys anyway. Just remember to flash supersu after you factory reset before you boot or you'll have to boot back into twrp again and flash it.

Thank you so much. So I see I can get to twrp no problem. What to do inside twrp before I bootloop or do I need to reset factory before I get to twrp? Then what to do after I am in a bootloop ?

If you used the method I told you there should be no bootloop. Just got to the section wipe and slide the slider for a factory reset. Then afterwards press back and go to your external sd and flash supersu again then reboot it will reboot twice after you flash supersu so don't worry.

Thank you. I actuallt just got done. I did factory reset instead and booted up fine. I took your advice and flashed supersu after the factory reset and i am all good now. I wonder the difference between factory reset and the format data. I was a little scared to factory reset so it woud not erase the rom.

Format data erases all user data. Factory reset erases all but internal storage. So data format is more extensive.

Hi, did everything with no problem. I got another question and not sure if you have the answer. I was hoping to re-lock the bootloader again. Do you know of a way to do that and get the phone to boot up to the system? I am trying to avoid the bootloader reboot message after turning on the phone! Thank you for all your help!

Do not relock unless you're pure stock no twrp or modded boot img. The annoying message will always be there.

Sweet. I have been looking at the forum and everything says tarp has to be installed and running . I'll keep looking. Thank you sir .
Absolutely do not re-lock your bootloader unless you are 100% stock. If you brick the phone with a locked bootloader, you are screwed.

So i rooted my Verizon LG G2 a couple months ago and was trying out all the ROMs. I started with Paranoid Android, then AOKP, then Malladus, then Flex ROM, and now i'm back to the Paranoid Android Beta 4. It's been running great for me but I wanted to go back to stock for a little so I've come here with a question. I did a backup of my stock ROM in TWRP and still have it. What would be the process to install a brand new stock rom (completely stock, no bells and whistles)? Can I restore the backup, then go into TWRP and wipe date/cache/etc, then reboot? Should that work? It's probably a super easy question, I just don't want to mess anything up.

That will do the trick for you. After restoring the factory backup just doing a factory reset will wipe out all of the bells and whistles you put into your backup. Should boot up just like new. I would boot the phone up first before doing the reset though. Maybe not necessary but I like to be cautious too! :laugh:

Thank you! Yep, i'll restore the backup and make sure it boots with no problems. Then boot into recovery and wipe data/etc.
I'll make sure to backup my current rom just in case. :laugh: Better safe than sorry!

Ut oh didn't seem to work for me. What did I miss? When i wiped, then rebooted, i was frozen at the LG screen.

Yep, I restored the file and it booted perfectly fine. Then I rebooted to recovery, wiped data, and rebooted system. It got stuck at the LG screen, so I manually entered recovery with the back keys. What did I do wrong?

Restore you backup again and this time when you go into TWRP don't wipe data, just swipe the Factory Reset slider. See if that solves the problem for you.

Will that wipe internal storage too? I usually go into the advanced wipe and wipe everything but internal storage.
No it won't, it will dump your apps and clean the caches and reset the settings.
You can do the same thing from inside the rom by going to system settings/backup reset and doing a reset. I don't know if TWRP does a better or more thorough job of it or not but both ways work.

System boots correctly, but I cannot do factory reset or wipe with TWRP, because I got some messages like "Cannot mount Data" and "Failed crypto loader". I understand that it has to do with encryption. Can someone please enlight me, and give me tips about the issue?

You have to download dm-verity and force encryption disabler from here , put it to SD card, reboot into TWRP, FORMAT DATA (not wipe) and flash that file (dm-verity and force encryption disabler). All your data will be erased.
No way to unencrypt without loosing you data for the moment(
"All your data will be erased" means that after boot I'll find a clean system installation (as factory reset)?

No, you cannot perform a backup, because your data is encrypted by default and the only way to disable it is to format your data.
I have a unique problem. I have a HTC Desire 612 from Verizon and I decided to revive it to playe PoGo. But it was stuck in a boot loop and I couldn't get any custom ROM.
Finally a gentle soul here gave me the stock rom and I flashed it vide TWRP and played PoGo for weeks. Then yesterday the phone bro led and when it came up it was stuck in a boot loop.
So I decided to flash the stock ROM again. But before that I tried to factory reset. I could go to TWRP, select wipe data, enter yes and the wiping was successful, then clear dalvic and cache and system beforehand finally I flashed the stock ROM.
Surprise surprise is NOTHING happens. The phone boots without the apps telling me they are installing. Then I get back the exact same data in my phone including my selected wallpaper and apps. Before I can do anything the phone restarts.
Point is wiping and restoring the stock ROM does NOTHING to the phone yet the processes are successful. Can somebody help?

It really is about TWRP failing to wipe
Just got my RMA, so of course I instantly unlock, root, and go to disable forced encryption and i keep getting a password error, my only pin i've ever used won't work, so I flashed factory, reset it up, made sure i didn't use a pin or anything, tried again, still asks for a password and won't accept mine. Am I missing something or is the fact they sent me a remanufactured phone screwing me because of the previous users pin?

What TWRP version are you using? Are you on the newest 3.03? If not that's more than likely your problem.

Just download the updated TWRP from this link. Boot back into recovery and choose flash IMG instead of zip. Install to recovery partition and then reboot. You should be good to go.

same nonsense. Went from clean, rooted, flashed TWRP 3.03, tried to flash noencrypt kernel and it's asking me for a password I don't have ... . should I try making my own password next time I reflash stock and see if it like overwrites it ?

Yeah that will work and shouldn't be an issue backing up everything with a new phone. TWRP should be able to read an encrypted device though as long as you gave it permissions to change system. No kernel will decrypt a device but most do not force encrypt.

I had a similar problem with TWRP 3.0.3-0 when I tried to restore a backup. It asked for a password, which has never happened before. I couldn't access my backup or any of my data or boot up. I had to restore stock. Clearing user data did nothing.

I was not . Just trying to disable force encrypt root and get PN back on it . Wiping worked for me. Also on 3.03, but that alone didn't solve, had to wipe . May be because I was using WUGS instead of manually doing it . Not sure, but it worked .

Hey, I'm running into the same problem after an RMA. I'm currently on stock unrooted 7.1.1 and want to flash custom rom but want to disable encryption beforehand. Can you advise proper wipe steps, or is this correct?
- unlock bootloader
- restart phone, enable developer options for USB debugging
- fastboot twrp-3.0.3-0-angler.img
- factory reset
- wipe everything (all checkboxes) including internal? (will this format with no encryption?)
- wipe system, data, cache
- push ROM (PN), Gapps, SuperSU-v2.79-201612051815.zip to phone via ADB in TWRP
- flash ROM (PN), Gapps, SuperSU-v2.79-201612051815.zip
- restart
Or is there another way to decrypt data or is it not an issue when clean wiping a new ROM?

You need to Format Data, Not Wipe to decrypt. It WILL wipe EVERYTHING so make sure anything in internal storage you want is backed up.

Thanks for confirming, I wasn't aware that there's a difference between Format Data and Wipe Data. After formatting data, I should be able to sideload the ROM, gapps, etc back via TWRP right?
I always try to keep an emergency folder on the PC with the minimum needed to copy back to the phone through recovery. In my case I keep a copy of pure nexus, dynamic gapps, supersu and elementalx. That combination never fails to boot and I know it well enough to get back in business in short order if it all went to hell. Do what's best for you.

I used Flashfire to flash a radio.img without checking flash bootloader.
I can get into the bootloader and twrp.
When wiping the device and flashing another rom or restoring a backup my 6p does not get passed the custom rom splash screen.
I was thinking of trying to fastboot flash system/data/cache of the March update and see if it boots.
I know I messed up. don't even know if it was because I didn't check the bootloader option in Flashfire. Just my guess because everything was working fine beforehand.
Any help or ideas would be welcome.

Hey... You said you wiped your device? What did you wipe in TWRP?
Try to install a ROM from TWRP. Once it's over go in wipe and do a factory reset. Reboot. It should likely fix your issue.

Its just strange, I've used Flashfire before but not for flashing a radio and it worked out fine.
I am on 3.79 and used Flashfire to flash 3.78. Went to the bootloader just to check and it still shows 3.79. Just my fault . I didn't check flash bootloader in the Flashfire settings. Atleast that's what I am guessing. Things were just fine before

Well, if nothing work, maybe backup your internal storage and flash a factory image... Then in recovery do a factory reset afterward. Who knows. Going back to stock shouldn't hurt anyway.

I've used FF to flash only radio files to the modem partition many times without issue. You untick all but modem, and you untick inject SU and preserve recovery. Not sure what went wrong for you. As mentioned , you should be able to manually flash stock and if you're careful, you'll still have your data. All your settings will be reset, but the userdata will be there. You can even use flash-all.bat, but open it in a text editor and remove the "-w" flag so it will not wipe your userdata. The Google page where you get the full factory image will have instructions.

Thanks. It was obviously my fault somehow.
I do remember there being only one option to tick.
Using fastboot back to stock did the trick and made me realize maybe I should hold off on using Flashfire for a bit.

Nah, FF is awesome and a major time-saver. Just read up on the documentation here and become familiar with it.
hey guys, i really need your help urgently.
i just finished setting up my OP8Pro to my needs and then i restored wifi networks from my Titanium Backup from Android 8, i booted and it won't boot anymore.
i get a FATAL EXCEPTION IN SYSTEM PROCESS: WifiHandlerThread...
so now i need to reset these settings via stock recovery and i already modified my recovery to enable ADB but i can't access /data
anyone has a hint for me how to access /data and where to find the wifi config on Android 11?
it's not stored in /data/misc/wifi anymore :/

You can reset WiFi within WiFi settings in settings.
But I would probably just clear data on the app you restored either in settings/apps or simply via titanium.
If it still fails then boot to recovery and wipe system.
Your storage will remain unaffected.
You could also try safe mode, power off and hold vol up and down as soon as you see the bootloader warning
Fyi I wouldn't bother restoring WiFi passwords like that, there's other ways of doing it.
Google can back these up for you for example, there are apps which can do it like swift (I think can do it)

You'd have to grab one of the fastboot ROMs then flash.
Why can't you open recovery? Isn't your pin / password being accepted?
If it's not and fastboot installation can't be done then honestly I'd just MSM your current firmware..it's easier than fastboot tbh.

my bootloader is already unlocked and i was rooted on 11.0.0... i can boot into fastboot and recovery but i'm not prompted my unlock pattern.
this was working before testing adb integrated recovery and restoring stock recovery...

I'm saying that if you use the MSM tool it will lock your bootloader so you'll need to unlock it again.
In regards to your recovery if you can get to it then choose English, then wipe, then system, then wipe system.
That will get you back like I said in my previous post.
If it's not asking for your pin/password (there is no pattern)
Then you're fine
I've not used that recovery but I don't see a point in using it

That will get you back like I said in my previous post.
If it's not asking for your pin/password (there is no pattern)
Then you're fine
I've not used that recovery but I don't see a point in using it

sorry i haven't used MSM yet so i didn't know it'll relock the bootloader but i'm more familiar with fastboot flashing so i'd like to stick with that also because i read of problems with the fingerprint reader when relocking the bootloader.
i thought i could delete reset the faulty wifi config via adb by using the adb-enabled stock recovery but i wasn't able to mount /data with it since it's encrypted and it's not asking for my pattern to decrypt it.
neither the stock recovery is asking for it now...
i don't want to lose my data hence i'm looking for a way to get it back running without completely reinstalling.
do you think it could work by only flashing system partition via fastboot?

I think you've certainly got a shot at it and what's the worst that can happen?
Did you actually try to wipe system in recovery? That would be my way to go.
MSM is extremely easy but I understand not wanting to lose storage.
That being said if you're correct about decryption then it won't matter anyway

well after trying lots of different things i ended up wiping system settings in stock recovery. atleast i didn't lose storage.

You're very welcome mate, I've done the same a few times..it's not that much of a loss really, a lot of apps pick up where they left off and if you do have titanium then your back ups are retained.
Glad you're sorted.
PS: this would have had the same effect that installing system would have had, only this time you get a clean slate
