[Q] Does anyone care about GPS quality and stability? - Asus ZenFone 3 Questions & Answers

I've seen entire reviews who don't even mention this important component: the GPS.
One might say that it rarely use it... but let me tell you that you might need it and if it lets you down it might be in the worst moment of all:
in the woods (my 'favorite' situation)
while in vacation, after a day spent on traveling, you reached your destination and you need to find that place you booked
trying to impress your friends with the fact that you just started jogging
The latter might seem the silliest of all, but when your recorded run looks like in the screenshot below (taken from my old ZE550KL), you know that you have a piece of junk worth 300 dollars in your hands and surely you can't rely on it in the woods or while exploring the world.

So, yeah... please record a walk or run (any running app will do) with your new Zenfone 3 and share your results here. :highfive:

You just turned me off

You may need to check better or replace it. My GPS works very well, 2/3 seconds to catch the satellites and rock steady while using it, no matter what geo-localized app I use.

My GPS works very well too

My Z3 GPS works just fine, very responsive.

Here's why I sold my Universal....or why i'm keeping it!

NOT ME!
I'm yet to get my universal, its on its way
Whats worse, it'll take another 15 days...as my sister is getting it from USA for me...and i'll have to wait till she makes it
I was just freaked out by the number of ppl selling away their devices, and thought i'd just start a thread where all of them give their reasons here...so that we'd know if it was the memory problem, or battery life, or bulkiness or whatever maybe the reason....and will help others making a decision to buy it!
Also, if you're one of those hanging on to the device from a while, and feel that this is "the" device to own, then tell us why!
Keep it nice and concise, bullet points as much as possible for easy reading

I'm keeping mine. The 'faults' are mostly little niggling things that can usually be gotten round by various hacks/tweaks people have made. And yeah it's a bit big, but you do get used to it
Positives:
- It's like having a little laptop.
- Connectivity wise it truly has it all - 3G, WI-FI, BT, video calling, SDIO, IRDA, etc. No other device has all of this.
- The WM5 OS makes it very easy to write programs/hacks for, so we will see a lot of these over the coming months.
- The VGA screen has a massive "wow" factor!
- Mini-USB connector and charger are very convenient indeed.
- Full-size headphone/speaker socket.
- Built in terminal services client is VERY useful!
- Awesome little keyboard with very good looking backlights.
- Persistant flash-based storage.
- Battery life is very good, lasts for many days on one charge.
- 4 (FOUR) speakers, and 2 (TWO) cameras! Flash is a nice gimmick too.
Basically for me, the huge amount of positives outweigh the small amount of negatives. Best "phone" I have ever owned.

Bought it at Mad Monkey Boy's Gadgets for 930 USD [qtek 9000]...and 20 USD for shipping to her address...
That makes it a total of 950USD....in comparison to 1350 USD here in India!!!

@sl9, I can only manage one day of use from my Exec's battery. I have been very careful with it from new. My Nokia 9500 with similar use can give me twice the life of the Exec battery. With the Exec if you use BT and forget to shutdown PIE you could run out of battery while you think the unit is "off/standby".

wow thats crazy man. but thanks for the heads up
I echo everything sl9 has said. The most important positives for me are:
- persistent storage
- WM5 means I never have to use my stylus, except for 3rd-party apps that haven't caught up yet
- full keyboard makes SMS a breeze
- some very useful touches in the software, like the easy switch on/off of BT and WiFi using just a couple of keyboard presses
- flexible and automatic speaker usage depending on the machine's orientation
- the way the thing feels in your hands (cool/cold, solid, 'tight'): it's nice to hold
- the VGA screen for browsing, Excel, calendar, contacts, ListPro and Today screen (I'm in proper VGA mode)
- battery lasts days for me, but I'm probably a lighter user than y'all and now (because most are awful on WM5) have no 3rd-party apps except PocketZenPhone, TomTom and ListPro (per day: 8 hrs Bluetooth, 1 hr phone, 10 SMS, 1 hr general use, 30 mins WiFi browsing)
- stability: Haven't done a reset in a week or so. I never force-close apps, but rely on WM5 to handle it. I have no idea how much program memory I have free, and I don't care: it just works
- Microsoft's contacts app is very good for keyboard-only use: makes dialling a contact easy
- there are some neat improvements in the UI, such as the way BT comes on automatically when you choose 'ActiveSync over Bluetooth', and headset mode is always on automatically if BT is on and the machine has found your headset to pair with
Negatives for me:
- WiFi reception is very poor
- OEM-supplied voice dial is poor. I hate having to record voice tags, and it's not 100% reliable with detection. This could be my HBH-65 headset though. Sometimes the voice dial prompt cuts in when I'm trying to answer a call on the headset
- Microsoft's calendar app is very very weak, as is PocketIE, and PocketOutlook for emails
- the phone app should scale to VGA properly and it should have a built-in T9 contact finder (the O2-supplied 'Smart Dialler' doesn't take advantage of the hardware keyboard, so is pointless)
- speaking of which, O2's bundled software is pointless and unhelpful
Umm....
- oh yeah: the cameras are still very weak and useful only for taking emergency pictures, such as recording car accidents that you have and newsworthy moments
- the camera flash is useless as a camera flash, but very good as a torch, if only the machine had an easy way of using this feature
- the hardware application buttons aren't as programmable or flexible as they could/should be. I wish we could program each button through the OS for both Press and Press-'n-Hold
Of course a big negative ATM is the lack of 3rd-party apps that are truly compatible with WM5, but this is hardly the fault of HTC or the mobile operators.
So, the hardware is excellent (with the exception of the cameras and WiFi reception) but the OS-bundled software is flawed. Hopefully we'll get ROM updates that will improve things, just like we did for earlier HTC machines.

Then I would say your battery may be faulty. Do you have wi-fi on?
With bluetooth on permenantly, my MDA PRO lasts for 3~ days on one charge. Without bluetooth, it lasts for 4-5 days.
I'm a fairly light user though, 1 short voice call a day on average, although I do open it up and turn on the screen about 10 times a day to check for reminders, text, notes etc.
Perhaps you are a much heavier user of it than I am? Even so, battery life on your device does seem unusually short
@sl9,
Without BT I get 3.5 hours of use with a combination of eBooks, PIM, email & web browsing (50% using 3G). With BT on that reduces to 3 hours. I use my Nokia in a similar was as a phone, ebook reader, PDA, etc. This is my second Universal as I had a JJ before the Exec and the JJ's battery life was a little worst. This level of use is not unusual for a business user who also travels a lot.

woah! your negatives sure scares the daylights out of me!
- bad wifi reception??? what seems to be the problem???! for me, this is going to be really important!
- bad camera quality? how bad is it??? I saw a few pictures taken from the universal on a couple review sites, and they looked pretty good! am i missing something? (damn i didnt play around enough with the camera when i had the device with me the last week )

Well, the WiFi is hard to measure, but the range is nowhere near as good as my HP laptop. I struggle to get a signal on my Exec if I'm not within about 4 metres of my Access Point in my house. (Standard modern house, thin internal wooden walls.) I can use my laptop anywhere in the house (up to 10 metres away) and in the garden too, but no chance with the Universal. I need to move the Access Point.
As for the camera, I guess it's subjective, but I wouldn't rely on it for decent photos. It's OK for times when you just have to record an image but you're not needing to print it out. Here's a comparison between my Universal and a 4 year-old 2 MPixel Canon Ixus300. Both photos without flash, because the Universal's flash has no effect on photos when the subject is more than a metre from the lens. Both photos are at 640x480 and at the same compression level (filesize 38KB). Neither camera is at its native resolution, to make it a realistic comparison.
Edit: moved photos to a new thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=33960
Hmm. Not sure why they don't both appear as thumbnails.
Forgot to add: Universal was in 'Night' ambience mode.
Edit: Incidentally, when you take pictures at the Universal's native resolution (1280x1024) the quality is better, but the same problems are there: poor light sensitivity, poor light colouration, blurred focus, indistinct details etc.
It's better, but a long way from good.
And don't forget, the Canon camera is old now: 4 years. Just 2 MPixel - only twice that of the Universal.
Edit edit: Moved photos to a new thread so they don't break this one

@SiliconS
thats a nice comparison shot! ( still wondering if you took them both with similar lighting conditions!!! )
i did read that the universal is fairly bad with "colors" as such....guess we have to live with it!
with the wifi range issue....gosh!! 4metres??? tell me your joking please!

Same room. Same lighting. Photos just one minute apart.
It's not really much better than my XDA2. Just bigger resolution. Low-light shots are really not its strong point though. Only by comparison can you see how bad it really is.

Sorry - I'm serious. Maybe others can confirm, or tell me that mine is worse than theirs. It's hard to measure objectively though.
You have to be kidding about the 4m WiFi range. I have the router placed in my bedroom and i can actually connect 2 rooms away which are in serial. Oh and there are 2 concrete walls in between.
I still get 2 bars inspite of all this. If you call this weak, then i dont know what to say.
Regarding the camera, its oodles better than the xda2 or the xda2s. It is also much better than the JAM, but then again these are not very good standards to compare to. Yes, it is not as good as Nokia or SE but if the camera is the reason one decides not to buy this device, then this device is clearly not for you.
Yeah, the camera sucks. Who cares? The rest of what's on the Uni - the critical stuff - works great. Quality in a cell phone camera is few years off ...

hi universaldoc!
i currently have an xda2 running on wm5! So when i junk my device and buy a new one, i'd first of all see what are the pluses i get by making such a decision.....
heres what i can count -
1. Awesome keyboard (i really love it!)
2. VGA screen (finally!)
3. Built in Wifi
4. Better Camera
5. 3G support (currently useless to me....but its still good!)
6. The cool factor???
7. 10MB more device root space??
8. I'm running out of points!!!
Having said that....I still have bought my universal (but i'm waiting for it get here  ) only because, i'm a god damned gadget freak and wouldnt mind trading away my spare kidney for one!
I'm just reconfirming my buy....the "reality hits" phase....you know???!!

I totally agree with all the positives already mentioned. As far as negatives are concerned, I have none. I love my O2 XDA Exec!
One point I'd like to mention though. My XDA Exec has GREAT WiFi. When I was setting-up my MSN Messenger, my Exec detected 4 different access points including my own. I happen to notice my neighbors' access point which I helped her setup included in the list. Now, she lives about 3 apartments down, so you can just imagine the lenght and obstacles my Exec has to traverse.
I don't have wi-fi yet though hoping to get it sorted in the next month or so. Though on the odd occasion I've switched the Exec's on, I've picked up stuff that must be about 30 - 40 metres away. I know for sure I picked up my cousin's network from around 20 metres outside his house the other week - and he lives in a converted barn with thick interior / exterior walls!
Regarding everyone else's positives and negatives, I agree with most. The camera is a LOT better, and is better than the 2.0MP one we had up to a few months ago. However, it's certainly not the main reason for buying a phone and certainly not in a feature-rich device such as the Exec. The pose factor alone is worth it, especially when sat in laptop mode in the car
It's 3G. It's an awesome looking bit of kit. One or two niggles in the software that will be ironed out. It's inspired 3 of my colleagues and bosses at work to get one. Less kit to carry around between home and work (no cradle, just a lead). VGA screen - which I STILL look at in awe sometimes. I didn't think I'd get to like landscape mode, but now I LOVE it.
Best XDA by far for me, and I've had most
Cheers
Ant
if else is positive, the main negative would be the response to incoming phone calls especially thru BT headset  ... you would be lucky to take it from the 1st time ... usually it takes 2-3 sec which is more than enough for the caller to hang up
Believe it or not ... I use the Universal now only for data activities (e-mail, net, ...) and I have to carry my old i-mate for phone things ... nice scene ... huh ? :x
I can't wait to see a real update for the Radio ROM
ohh ... and a one hell missing feature ... a secondary LCD on the cover to avoid opening the screen just to see who's calling ... a very simple idea you find on almost all flapping mobile phones!!!!

Sold it after 8 months - now got 3GS Iphone

Hi
I thought i would post this as i've been thinking about moving to an iphone for ages, but have used this forum as my source of info as never quite been convinced
I run a .net software house, so i get involved in sales, development, networking, servers etc
So for me the windows mobile seemed perfect as i thought i could use the mob for emergencies with remote desktop etc
However, i was annoyed with some stuff on it mainly due to lag, slow speeds, and especially web browsing (page rendering).
I tried cooked roms, and was running lots of dutties (3.9 was the last)
The other day a friend of mine who runs a hardware IT company upgraded from windows mobile to the normal iphone (non 3gs) and started raving about it.
I trust what this guy says so i started to seriously consider it
I then did my research here, and was put off by the iphone because everyone was SO against it, i thought "these guys are hardcore users like me, so they must have done their homework"
....so i decided not to switch
I then wondered into an o2 shop when the 3gs was released, and played with it for about 30 mins.
I went home, put my phone on ebay, and a week later its gone and i have the new 3gs sitting in front of me.
firstly i'll list the bad points
1) battery isn't as good as touch HD, but it'll last you a day with some heavy use (still testing this bit though)
2) sat nav seemed a bit thin on the ground, but i'm using SYGIC which has full postcode and voice navigation which works ok, not quite tom tom but tom tom is due to be released soon.
3) the keyboard is actually really good, and i was very supprised, but the normal T9 style keyboard doesn't exist natively (theres an app for that - probably)
4) app store is flooded with a load of pointless applications which make a noise when you touch the screen (whoopdee fecking doo!)
5) you cant customise the home screen appart from icons, BUT, i find it very functional, as icons have notifications on them.
6) you have to go through i tunes to do everything, but there is software around to get away from that (yet to test it)
So these are the bad points, but the good points FAR out way these.
The user experience is amazing, very snappy, loading apps are very much bang bang bang and done.
Screen roatation is pretty instant
web browsing on wifi is like on a pc, downloads and renders very quickly
on 3g its still very quick, renders fast but data transmission just a little slower
the touch HD doesn't even come close.
EVERYTHING is so much quicker, and better, the camera may only be 3MP but who cares, because as least you can take pictures, and not be left waiting 2 mins everytime you want to boot up the camera etc.
I'm not a "FAN BOY" i'm a serious business user
My only regret is that i didn't upgrade sooner
All you die hard Win mob fans here..... seriously dont comment on stuff you know nothing about, i bet most of you have never used a iphone for long enough to give it a fair test.
this thread isn't a win mob VS iphone os.
its for those sitting people sitting on the fence thinking shall i get one???
my advice is YES, but, play with one for a few hours first.
Loads of people on here have converted, and told me i wouldn't look back, and i thought they were just little kids, but i now now what they mean
so there you have it, advice from a 31 year old professional, and not a 16 year old kid who uses it to play tetris
p.s. mine is jail broken, and unlocked and running on orange.
CUE flamming
disclaimer: this is just my opinion, and i've only owned the device for a few days, sorry if i offended anyone.
Congratulations on your purchase!
Thread closed!

Do you like your Galaxy S so far?

I'm thinking of getting this amazing phone, but would like to find out what it's really like from you guys first before I make the purchase.
Well i loved it in the beginning, then after all the problems and issues such as lags, hangs, and GPS crap, i sold the phone. But since then I've been looking at other Android smart phones and none of them seem to be better currently.
So, I think i made the right choice by selling the phone (i sold it at a profit of US$100) now ....
then a few months later i will recheck if Samsung has fixed all these problems.. If they have, then i would repurchase the phone, and i'm sure at that time the price has dropped by quite a bit....
I just can't afford using a phone that gives all these problems at the moment.....
If samsung cannot fixe all these problems in the future then i'll choose something else....maybe 3 months from now there will be a pletora of good android smartphones....
Buying the phone right now would be unwise since you will be paying high price only to have to install this and that fixes and patches and hacks and what not in order to fix the all the bugs that samsung hasnt ironed out since launching the phone. Unless of course, that is your hobby....
But for me, if i had to do all these things with the phone, i wanna get paid by samsung.... not the other way around.....
I've got the Tmobile USA Vibrant version. I don't think the problems that are being reported are as prevalent as people might think - I believe that folks that aren't having any problems are not bothering to come to these forums on the web, researching issues, so who you see reporting problems are folks that are having issues, looking for solutions
there's also a certain percentage that are researching tips, improvements, shortcuts or tweaks (which is why i'm on the web).
My vibrant's gps is actually showing incredible accuracy, better than my MyTouch 3g and than my 2 yr old garmin nuvi 680 indoors where neither would show any satellites and the vibrant does, and outside it's faster than the garmin nuvi in calculating / recalulating but i suspect the A-GPS plays a major part in that.
the signal "issue" is a prime example of folks imagining an issue where there isn't one (think about it, the signal bars are reporting signal strength on the weak side and then when you choke the phone in the "death grip" it further degrades the displayed signal strength, but phone calls for the most part aren't dropping. That death grip is like putting your phone inside a metal soup can, and then wondering why signal dropped. Mine will show the weak signal when i death grip it but is still pulling 3G (at increased download speeds over my MyTouch 3G/HTC Magic) in a weak Tmobile coverage area
I've got no lag issues - but i haven't downloaded but a few apps, about 10, no task killers, and i really haven't used any of the samsung apps, as folks are reporting those seem to invite lag
for what it's worth, I'm extremely happy with this phone's performance.
I absolutely love mine. First smartphone, great GPS, good battery life, great apps, awesome screen, I can't put it down and I've had it for over a week.

I think you're right in your assessment of new people coming to forums and what not. It's a biased sample for sure, personally, I was waiting to get on device where I actually had a reason to be here, this is it. So, while I didn't come to fix issues, I have learned a fair share and helped out a bit.
I'm upto 150+ apps showing in LauncherPro drawer, this includes some factory installed items and doesn't include all of my widgets (I keep two running at all times) and other things. My main lag only occurs during software installs, other than that everything else feels blazingly fast.
Really like this phone. After suffering the window mobile, this is definitely a great phone to have.
Its this or iphone. I have use iphone and I don't miss it one bit.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I am in same boat the OP, I am close to getting it, but what I am hearing is a somewhat mixed bag. Really would love to heard the good and the bad about the phone.
So far the biggest gripes I have come across are lack of notification light (I would miss that), lag on the other hand fix makes it even faster , lack of camera flash. But i really like what I have seen what the Hummingbird can do..

Here's a good write-up of "the good and the bad" http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=730131
The poll thus far seems fairly conclusive though.
bottom line is that if you are prepared to do a little customising then it can be the best phone out there atm (and lets face it why go android if you dont want to customise? thats what the iphones for right?...)
its only going to get better too as time goes on.
JF3 firmware out of the box and you may run into a couple of problems.
I own mine now for about 3 weeks and over all i heavy use it, my girl friend tells me that i touch my phone more often and tender then her which i think its an indicator of how much i love my Phone, even for native Xvid Support.
But of course there are thinks i really dont like at the Phone. I have much lags, but i also use much and diffarent kind of software at the same time. So maybe i have lesser lags if i dont use the phone like a Hardcore Home PC.
But there is one kind i think its an Knock Out Death Reason to not buy.the Phone before these Bug isnt fixed in an Newer Original Samsung FW.
The Timestamps of the Digital Camera are not written on File System layer. Of corse the are correctly written into EXIf and the digital image where named to the exact TimeStamp, but no attributes in the Fat are written. So if you organize your Pictures on a Nas, you can run into really big troubles.
But i hope thes issue will fixed in the next FW update.

I'm loving mine, though it really did need to be rooted and the minfree* settings tweaked, the defaults are very bad - Samsung should be fixing this in the new firmware for all devices though. I have very few issues with the device and things I thought were potential problems before I bought it have turned out to be less so.
- Lack of search button/it's integration into the menu button is fine - I was worried because I used menu longpress to hide/show the keyboard a lot on my magic but no apps I'm using require this anymore since most android devices are keyboardless, this used to be fairly necessary when a lot of apps were developed on the G1. If you voice search with longpress of search on other devices a lot it could be an issue for you though.
- Plasticy feel/design of the back, it's nicer than it looks, feels solid despite being light and I'll be putting a resin case over it which disguises most of the horrible iphone 3G derived elements of the hardware anyway.
- Samsung customisation is actually quite nice once you've installed ADW launcher, I like the wifi/bt switches in the notification tray and the media player/in call controls that appear in there when those are active, it's a crying shame there's no widget for the media player though. Your tastes may differ but overall I think most of the customisations are good - with very noticeable exception of the homescreen.
* see here for an explanation, the default for EMPTY_APP and CONTENT_PROVIDER is some figure under 30MB, bump them up to 60 and 50 respectively and the phone runs brilliantly.
the greatest phone i've had to date, it's like a gameboy+office+email+movieplayer+mp3player+photoalbum+GPS+laptop+renote+terminal+web+wifi+bluetooth+phone, in 1 tiny little package
it sure beats my old HTC Athena in quality and speed, weight, durability, ease of use, amount of hacks and accessories for it
Had my UK spec galaxy for about a month. Not had any of the reported issues. Gps is great. Had 16 feet accuracy last night. Very little lag. Only when launching an app for the first time. Have zero regrets getting it. At least 3 other people have got one after seeing mine and they love it too. Highly recommended. Froyo will be amazing. But its the best out there even without it.

No, not very happy with it.
It's my first Android headset, I sold my 3GS to my sister figuring I'd finally give Android a chance. The homescreen is nice, notification system is brilliant and so on. But the system has a couple of major flaws...
It's just not as smooth, as easy to use or as elegant as iOS4. There's lag, the market is absolutely horrendous and Fring managed to break the camera so I had to uninstall that to get it back. I don't know what the eff Google are doing, but they need to bring the full marketplace to all countries. But even then, it's not very impressive. Yes I've rooted mine, yes I have market enabler, and it feels wrong. I should not have to do that just to get access to the rest of the market.
And this is, in my opinion, the biggest issue with Android today. I tried to find an app as good as AutoStitch or Pano for Android, but no, there is no such thing in the store. I tried to find a couple of high-quality games, I couldn't find any. I want Let's Golf 2, Worms and many others on this thing. I tried to find a photo editor comparable to PhotoForge and PhotoGene, or something similar to ColorSplash, and again, no. And what about synthesizers, virtual guitars and other fun apps? Haven't seen any.
This phone got me excited, but then I just realised... What's the point? All that power, but nothing is using it. All that power, and we still have lag all over the OS.
I'm sure people are going to hate me for this, but I am a bit disappointed by both the phone and the OS. I do have high hopes for Froyo, but flash support and a snappier OS probably won't be enough for me to keep it. I have bought over a hundred apps on my old 3GS, and I think I'd like those back now.
EDIT: If you think I'm wrong, if you have found the apps I'm looking for then by all means link me to them. I want to like this thing, I really do.
i like PhotoStitch, i keep a copy with me
Asphalt 5 is great, i consider that a quality game
Lets Golf 1 is also available
heck they even have my favourite Bejewled 1
they might not have version 2 of the software, but it will come soon.
Android is fairly new, it's only on version 2
there was not many apps nor games until Android 1.5 got matured.
Iphone OS is at least 2 version ahead of Android, give it some time for it to mature, and you'll see the big picture.

Oh yeah I have Let's Golf, bought that in Gameloft's own store. Very nice.
As for the rest, not a big fan of racing games I'm afraid.
And yeah I know it's a new platform, but they've been bragging about it's growth for a while now and yes I'm sure they have 100,000 apps in the store. I just can't find the good ones, the store needs an overhaul.
I'm afraid I just can't give it more time. I might have to return a year later or so.

Sounds like someone didn't do any research before a big purchase. If you liked how the iphone operated and all the apps for it, why did you switch?
Before I bought my SGS, i went on androlib to look for apps I would need on my phone. I didn't find everything I was looking for, but at least I knew what was there and what wasn't. I also looked around all the android forums (like android central) for any android-specific issues I might encounter.

No more GPS problems

I bought my Galaxy S few weeks ago and I could barely use the GPS. It took way too long to get it working and still it was inaccurate.
Few days ago I flashed JM2 firmware and installed app called TrackerBooster (can be found in the Android Market). Now the GPS works perfectly, takes only few seconds to get it connected (outdoors). I have used it now like 15 times and max. time I had to wait was 20 seconds.
I'm not sure does TrackerBooster app need to be installed, might work well without it, haven't tested.
I hope this helps those who have problems with GPS but this is just my experience, I would wait for other comments before flashing new a firmware.
It's called new firmware flashing syndrom for GPS. Basically, if you flash to any new firmware, your GPS will work for a few days.
As Foxbat said, a full flash/reset cycle improves results on the pathetic, schizophrenic and overall random SGS GPS implementation. But I am not going to be a smart ass and insinuate you don't know what you're talking about.
Instead I'll just ignore all the previous "the GPS issue is fixed" claims by many users who prematurely yelled "fixed" and just cowardly quote one of my favourite authors..."Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." - Carl Sagan
Plus we shall also ignore the previous 308 users who have "cried Wolf"^-1. Please refer to your favorite fable author for proper reference.
Its occurred so many times, it actually has it's own syndrome!! FFS

So you still trolling the forums about your GPS problem even after you sold your Samsung if you ever had one from the beginning. I have never had serious problem as many others and if only 308 of millions have had a problem it must certainly be a really good GPS. Stop trolling you only because look like an ignorant user who really do not want to make the phone better but want to promote NOKIA.
For sure, milsjg. You can add me too as ignorant, 309th user who's GPS sucks d*ck hard.
I wish my GPS sucked d**k... that would at least make it useful! ) 310th user here noticing GPS issues... that said while I was on JM7, I managed to record a very very close to perfect track using mytracks... for the walking section of my test it went perfectly even showing where I retraced my steps to go to poo bins! But when I got on to driving it went a bit mental and I apparently drove through the fire station, the wrong way round roundabouts and demolished a few streets worth of houses, but occationally it did show me going down the right side of the road!
You forget that before he even got it, he was complaining that he was reluctant to buy the phone because of reports about lag and GPS (and then, proceeded to buy it anyway).
The main problem is that people have different quality of acceptance for GPS. Some people expect a signal which compares with a fitness GPS (accurate within 2 or 3 meters generally), and some of us don't care if it drifts off by 20m.
Any technology which doesn't have a definitive state will get various opinions...

But then when it comes to navigation (arguably the principal purpose of having GPS in these devices) things go totally haywire! ) Personally I wonder whether GPS was installed purely for marketing purposes, to allow app developers (and of course google!) to snoop as to where their users are and how they are using their devices. For that there's no need for close tracking! )
not sure why you would fault beowulf for buying, if as you indicate he had some concerns - the damn phone is drop dead gorgous. If any product could stimulate optimism or optimistic hope, even in a skeptic, this phone would. And that's what makes it so frustrating.
I'm going to hate sending it back (i negotiated an extended buyer remorse return period) but if GPS isn't corrected by mid sept, this phone is history
samsung having released it w/o working gps is maybe forgiveable, but then even assuming they didn't know about the issue before release, it's been over 90 days since the asian release, and it's still not working.
Lay on top of that that samsung announced the GPS had been "validated" in the EPIC 4G, and it turns out it isn't. That did nothing but strengthen my doubts on samsung delivering a solution.
Tried this tracker booster app, makes no difference, gps still horrendous. If some people think that a 20m accuracy variation is acceptable for a gps lock they are a bloody fool.

Then it must be the firmware I flashed. There's a big difference with JM2 and the previous FW I had, if I remember right it was JF3.
The accuracy is good, for example Endomondo regonizes few meter changes. (like changing side of the road).
Sorry to offend you but Beowulf_pt has no SGS and still he is lurking around complaining. If you think about it ,there must be some reasons that I and several others have a perfectly normal (no correction) GPS on our SGS. Why is it working so different for different persons? Some logical alternatives would be error in a batch of phones (switch it), or operator programming has messed it up (get new operator), or just overload caused by program running in background, memory and task mangers etc ( educate yourself or wait for a proper kernel - see below) or in some cases just plain trolling of some non SGS owners (see my last reply).
The GPS chip is new and according to the web only recently the code for efficient low level drivers, for the linux kernel, has started to appear on internet (23 august). It will take some weeks before they are implemented so I would bet that they have fixed it by the end of September. You know, bad driver = slow, no calender etc. You will notice it specially when you use program that uses lots of resources (Maps and My tracker). It is much more efficient with Cardiotrainer for example or GPS test. (see my third conclusion above). I have noticed that (at least for me) it takes 5 - 10 sec to get a first lock in GPS test but half a minute at least in Maps or My Tracks.
Another tip is to run for example GPS test for one minute or so before My Track so the GPS gets some satellite data downloaded (calenders). The time also helps the GPS to calculate the exact position to use as a start point. You normally need a minute or so if the calenders are to old or you moved to get the right positions.
Iphone 4 has a good GPS (3 is crap according to some owners and it is not fixed. Do you hear any complaints?). The chip is one generation older than SGS and Apple do not need to wait for the kernel to be changed in there Iphone. They do it them self and by the way Iphone 4 is not really multitasking which means that GPS programs can easily be prioritized.
Well this is a short version. The net is filled with facts and if you start read a little you can start puzzle together what the cause is for your faulty GPS (nearly nobody believes its hardware any more).
By the way, I am not ignorant and I know rather much about GPS and how to evaluate tracking (I have written several scientific papers on tracking of wildlife where at least one was on the subject - evaluation of ARGOS tracking devices using GPS as reference). I have owned several mobiles and GPSes, programmed and built fish tracking devices, and did my thesis on wildlife tracking. I stating this not to try to end the GPS discussion but to make it a little bit more "scientific" and not so emotional like the comments on my last reply. There still nobody that knows how many that has a problem with the GPS. We only know that a few of millions have complained and a few of millions have said there satisfied with it.

On the contrar my friend, 5 - 15 meters is what you can expect and that means that the fix has 95 % certainty to be in that interval. 20 is a little bit above what you can expect but not much. In good dedicated trackers or a good phones you can get 5 meters (which I often get after 30 sec outside) and 2,5 for some fixes but not constant. A mobile is not a dedicated GPS and with the suspected driver problem 20 would not be bad. Try with GPS test, under open sky, and holding it at the bottom of the phone. Before you start you should turn off and on the GPS and close all task managers and started programs. You know that home means often that you leave the program running in the background but using back shuts it down. And wait for 30 - 60 seconds. If you get 10 be satisfied it,s a phone and not a dedicated GPS.
My touch hd would actually follow the f$$king road. Not too much to ask that a brand new smart phone would do the same is it? Its nothing short of pathetic. Even my old tytn2 was superb as a gps device for navigation, this thing cannot be trusted.

I for one am getting SICK of installing fw's hoping for a fix for GPS.
They put a good hardware-wise device out.. But its kinda shoddy the fw development isn't equally as good. I have flashed nearly ALL the fw's to no real avail..
I am started to get frustrated after all this patience..

Running 2.2 with no lag, fix no root, no apps to help. Google Nav and Co-Pilot work flawlessly. Mytracks follows me walking down the pavement at the correct position and on the correct side of the road with very few deviations.
I really cannot see what all the fuss is ablout here.

Well I rather stick with Popper. Extraordinary evidence or support isn't that hard to get (look at the paranormal claims etc). What is more difficult and more fruitful to come by is some clever tests that eventually will or can refute a claim. If a theory will pass those tests it is actually more trustworthy then when it gets "extraordinary" evidence.
Again, no theory will stand till the end of time, how extra-ordinary our evidences may be.
Lol, back to the gps.

Does AGPS actually work - or not..!

Does AGPS actually work on the Acer A500, or android tablets in general? Programs like GPS Test and GPS Status can both clear and download AGPS data, but it does not seem to affect (improve) performance at all. I have tested this MANY times and it just seems useless. My third A500 (3.01 still) seems to have weak GPS pickup and usually cannot fix or even see any sats in my house.
Rob
For me, yes it does work - I have wifi location off and can get multiple fixes indoors after some 10-25 seconds.
You may just be unlucky and still have a bad one (I've read that sometimes the gps antenna comes loose and fall behind things, interfering with the signal)
It works, at least in my case. I have had situations where it locks in a minute or 2. I have had situations where it takes 10m to lock. I have had situations where it locks on in my home, and situations where it absolutely refuses to.
What I do know is that it works and works well when I'm outside, period.
GPS are best at grabbing their signals while outdoors, in the open. People here are using it from their homes or expect it to lock on in 2m flat. While it CAN be used this way, and can lock in that quickly, it needs more time to acquire a signal indoors and if it doesn't, that doesn't mean it's broken. That just means the signal can't get through the walls. If it works today and not tomorrow, consider the possibility that there may be more clouds in the sky or external interference.
I'm sure some people have gotten bad ones, but in most cases I believe people are just trying to get blood from wine ie: they are attempting to use and get the best performance outside of the intended parameters of use of the feature.
If you're outside and have been for 30m and it doesn't work, THEN you may have a problem. Until then, works as intended.
Mine works great also. I get a lock in about 10 seconds. Go outside, and lock is much faster if don't move. I use it as a car GPS. Just wait for it to lock and then it's working great.
mine works also, i have to go outside, but it works.
I to can confirm my GPS works very well.I use the new Co_pilot.I can get a lock in the house in about 2 minutes after a tab reboot.after it locked once. A restart of the app it can lock in as little as 5 to 20 seconds.it will keep the lock.However. I have not found the issue but once in a while it can tar it forever to get a fix.even thou its seeing 5 to 7 sat's.trying to get a fix while moving takes a few minutes as well.now Google navigation will lock rather fast if I start it before I leave my drive.guessing its still using my wifi to get a fix.because it will take forever otherwise.
Co pilot I thing does something tobthe configuration file to improve GPS.
This is only my openion if you think im wrong your welcome to that.don't bash mine thank you
Hardware failure is not out of the question. I had to return two tablets for this very issue. The third tablet I got was like night and day.
1st tablet never got more than one sat, and never locked, while outside on a clear day.
2nd tablet never saw one satellite in the whole 5 days I owned it.
3rd tablet gets 10+ satellites outside and about 4 inside. Locks in about 30 seconds outside and 2-5 minutes inside. Not perfect, but useable for navigation in my car (which is what its for).
The sales manager at the store said faulty GPS was the number one reason he got this pad returned, and he got quite a few of them. He said Acer was being very tight lipped about it. I suspect they know they have a problem and are hoping it flies under the radar long enough to get a working batch out there.

All I can say is, oh my god! I bought a Xoom today and the only thing I did was install GPS Test on it. Upstairs in my room, it sees and locks 8-10 satellites almost instantly. The acer, can barely see 1 satellite in my house, forget about getting a lock, maybe it you wait long enough and don't breathe on it. Also, the SNR numbers on the Xoom are substantially better indoors than the Acer gets outdoors! There is no doubt in my mind whatsoever now that this current Acer unit I have has a defective (or just poor quality) GPS.
I uploaded a quick video of the xoom, sorry about the grainy video, it was taken with my old hp camera... You'll get the point though. I wish the GPS on the Acer worked even half as good as this Xoom appears to (so far).
Vid should be available shortly.

ps. I also have a new Samsung Galaxy Vibrant phone, the GPS on that is just as bad as the acer, probably a bit worse.

I have wifi assist turned off on my xoom, plus it does not have 3g either. Your acer looks not too bad, but the xoom still obliterates it speedwise with a gps fix. This is the third A500 I have had. The first was DOA and the second one had a bad microphone. This third one has been good except for the GPS. The second one had much better functioning GPS compared to this third one. I am tired of playing musical tablets though and I want one that just plain works. I could get another Acer, but who knows if the GPS will work properly on that one or not. Compared to the Xoom, the Acer GPS does not seem very good at all. Too bad, since it's an otherwise great unit.
edit: I did some searching and it seems the Xoom has a better hardware GPS implementation, but I have not found the exact details just yet.

I guess we know what happened to all those failed GPS A500's that got returned. A few of the big chains (futureshop) has just started selling a refurbished model for $100 cheaper than the new release ones.
That was a quick turn around.

I saw that too. I wonder what the return rate on these has been? Futureshop has quite a few A500 in stock and they don't seem to be selling. People are definitely interested in the tablets, but the average consumer is going to be confused with the current choices available. Acer doesn't exactly have a stellar reputation to live up to, but I think the A500 is a pretty good unit if it everything works like it should.

There is no question that the aGPS software is not tuned ideally with new A500's. Unfortunately, for some, this is not the only issue. There IS a hardware aspect to this problem. This is evident by the fact that so many users can exchange their stock units for brand new units and get entirely different results.
The above fix will optimize your GPS locking, I'm sure; but only if your adapter actually works in the first place.
In regards to android tablets not selling, I suspect it's just marketing. Android is still the new kid on the block. Even out of the gate, most android tabs offer much more than an ipad at a much better price, but people walk right past them in order to get themselves a tablet that has the shiny white apple logo on the back. They want to be able to tell their friends that they got an IPAD.
Also, those who actually are in the know, might be a little hesitant about android at the moment. Every single android tablet currently on the market has had release problems. The ACER has its GPS and Wifi problems, the samsung has its screen issue, the Xoom has the fiasco with the SD card, the thrive has its sleep disorder. They are all minor, and they will undoubtedly get worked out. It just makes people second guess going with android.
Plus, Mac is playing the major patent troll card right now. They just hammered HTC pretty hard, and other android distributors are rightfully worried. This will no doubt affect the future of the platform as a whole.
IM am a little confussed here. why is everyone complaining because thier tabs dont gps lock indoors? most car gps's dont lock indoors. why would you even need to get a sat signal for gps in your living room? are you having trouuble finding the kitchen?
This is a great tablet and only complains i have heard from people about it is people tring to do silly things with it and then getting upset because it wont do the silly things.
Sat signals were never ment to penatrate roofs and walls thats why your direct tv dish and xm or sirius sat anntennas are OUTSIDE i think you guys are complaining about something it wasent ment to do, and why the nav program has wifi assist so that you can use the nav program at home to plan routes. then switch to the sat once you GO OUT SIDE.
But my main question still is why do you need a sat signal sitting in your living room and why are you complaining when you dont get one?
and also to the people just *****ing non stop about the charger cord really? its like your just looking to complain about something. agan the whole point of the tablet is to be portable not to be used while teathered to a wall socket. so what the cord is a little smaller then other peoples. what are you gonna do with a cord thats 2 foot longer that you cant do with this one?
This s a great tablet and all anyone is doing is complaining about stupid stuff.
well i am mad because the tablet didnt buy itself and walk to my house and set itself up for me. really sat signals arent suppose to work indoors who needs a sat signal indoors? and just because you do get one indoors dosent mean your suppose too. if your getting sat signals indoors i would be questioning the build quality of my house and not the tablet.

Your comments are fair enough, I suppose. I'll assume you're not trolling. But I'd ask you to consider the following:
Some A500 owners (obviously, yourself included) have a working GPS module, and can use it as well as can be expected. Other A500 owners (obviously, yourself not included) have a broken GPS, and cannot use it as expected. In fact, it is broken so badly that they never get a signal under even the most ideal circumstances. There is no question that GPS performance seems to vary from unit to unit.
Considering that, your comments confuse me. Are you saying that these unfortunate A500 owners with malfunctioning GPS units have no right to complain? Are you saying they have no right to gather on a forum and try to troubleshoot the issue? Are you saying that they should not be allowed to test their units within the comfort of their own home? Are you saying they should not be allowed to communicate and compare results?
Assuming it's not too subtle, I'll leave you to detect the irony in my statement when I say that I'm deeply sorry if the strife of these less fortunate A500 owners offends you in some way.
Furthermore, I'm also sorry that you don't understand a persons desire to "play" with his or her new toy without leaving the house. Perhaps it doesn't make much logical sense, but a hobbyists enthusiasm rarely does. You can take solace in knowing that you are not required to understand it. Nor are you required to be offended by it.
Cheers,
-PW
No I am not trolling what ever that even means. Granted I may have been a bit harsh with my comments but, my point is that they are expecting thier tablet to do something tha is simply isnt ment to do. they are complainin that its broke because it is not doing something that again it was not ment to do.
gps sat signals are not ment to be recieved indoors period. go take you gps out of your car and see if it dosent lose signal indoors. it will does that mean its broken? no My point sinply was that gps sat signals were never ment to be recieved indoors on any device thats why sat tv dishes and xm radios attenas are mounted outside. because sat signals either dont penatrate buildings at all or not very well if they did then there would be no need for external attenas for t.v and sat radio.
This is why if you want to play with you nav on your tablet there is a wifi assit mode for INDOORS.
I was simply stating people are complaining about something that wasent ment to work the way they assume it should.
I am in no way putting down anyone who has a defective a500 and from what i have read the new updates have fixed most all issues. i was simply stating that not being able to get gps indoors in not a defect nothing gets gps signal or a good gps signal indoors. my comments were directed to those persons.
same as the people who are complaining because no usb charging. well if they would read they would know thier tab has two yes two 3620 mah batteries that have a greater power consumption then what usb provides and cant be recharged by usb that same as about 98% of all other tablets on the market but yet there is post after post of people complaining and saying its a defect when its not.
why is it if someone points out the truth they get accussed of being a troll? just tring to inform is all because if you go and return your iconia for something else and guess what its not gonna get gps indoors either or charge from usb because thats the nature of the beast. not a defect just trying to help sorry i worded like i did im just blunt.
Now if you want to descuse defects how about acers software? anyone else find thier clear.fi not working? Im having to use third party soft to be a client to my nas because all thiers does is show pictures but not any other files.
But nobody in this thread complained about not getting a fix indoors, you implied we were. I think we all know that indoors is obviously not the most ideal place for GPS signals. The third A500 I had to return (1st DOA, 2nd bad mic) because it performed poorly when it was in my vehicle and not much better when outside. It definitely performed worse than the one it replaced - which I would have kept except it had a bad microphone. I tested it A LOT outdoors and in my vehicle. It always seemed quite slow to find satellites, let alone get a fix. I also tested a Xoom indoors and posted a video of the results, just to show how well that unit worked even under less than ideal conditions. It may be an apples and oranges comparison though since the GPS hardware is probably different. So I returned the third A500 and I have a 4th one now. The microphone is good and guess what, the GPS seems to work quite well. Not as good as the Xoom still, but my fixes are now done in seconds as opposed to minutes. I have not tested it in the car yet, but inside the house it's maintaining a fix with pretty good SNR numbers.
If you get a chance, check out the thread I posted about the web browser 'find on page' feature being broken in the latest 3.1 update. It has worked about twice in the 20 times I have tried it.
