Hi, New poster so if I've posted in the wrong area please don't bite
I've been connecting my phone to a smart device (miracast-ing 'direct') but as of late the connection has become unstable and generally unusable. I had the brainstorm of using an old router to stabilize the connection, this seems to have done the trick but now I'm unable to access the mobile data as WIFI has assumed priority. Please bear in mind I don't have home internet so the router is being used solely as a go between for phone and smart device. Is there any possibility of WiFi connection whilst have access to mobile data or is this just a pipedream?

You can just start a wifi network from your phone, connect the smart devices to your phones wifi and use mobile data normal as internet connection (this is standard if you start a wifi network from phone). You wouldnt even need the router with this szenario, if the wifi signal of your phone isnt strong enough you can connect your router to the phone and extend the wifi with the router.

But creating a mobile hotspot won't help because it doesn't solve the faulty (actually non-existent) miracast connection, plus I don't need a hotspot because only the phone needs internet access. My earlier explanation was probably a bit vague.
My goal is to mirror my phone's screen but to also have internet access solely on my phone.
Phone➡Smart Device➡Display - Can't connect (used to work faultless).
Phone➡Router➡Smart Device➡Display - Connects but no mobile data available because the phone thinks the router has internet access covered.

Creating a hotspot is not for giving the other devices in your network internet access, this is the only way you can use the wifi on your phone with using mobile data at the same time. I dont know why but android devices never use mobile data when they are connected to a wifi network and there is no internet access available. So if you configure your router as a wifi repeater and setup the phone as base station, your wifi signal from phone to router should be good and you can connect your other devices to the router, the phone should see all devices in the same network if you stop the dhcp server in your router and only use the one from your phones hotspot. Should look like this :
Phone (with DHCP) <----Router---->Smart Device---> Display

Hopefully that sort of config is available on my router as it is loaded with a custom firmware from my old ISP provider.

Router ISP custom firmware seems restrictive (no advanced wireless settings) plus WDS is not officially supported.
Possibly achievable but beyond my technical savvy

Do not use WiFi 5Gz , use only 2,4Gz, and wifi 5Gz off for router and smartphone

I am thinking of replacing my Magician with TyTn because the WI-FI is a nice feature to have.
How easy is it ? I mean, configuration wise.
Because I travel a lot and stay in a hotel.
Usually, in the hotel, they offer WI-FI access (mostly you must pay for the service).
What kind of WI-FI connection can be made using TyTn ?
Is there any kind of connection profile that we can configure and choose for ?
Maybe this question is stupid, but I dont have experience with PDA and WI-FI access (as you know that I am using HTC Magician!).

Configuring Wi-Fi on TyTN is very easy. With default settings you just need to turn on the wifi and wait for the phone to detect wireless networks.
TyTN supports 802.11b and g (10Mbps/54Mbps)
Dunno about the profiles. You can add accesspoints/ad-hocs and choose which to use.
However, if the wireless lan you connect to is open (no encryption) and uses DHCP you only need one access point for that and theres no need to do anything else.
I have used Wi-Fi access in a bar without any problems. Shouldn't be any different when using it in a hotel if the AP signal is strong enough.
At home, TyTN can't be further than 15-20m from my AP without the signal dropping down to zero.
Wifi configuration is the same in all windows mobile 5 devices, you can connect to a network and store the credentials, so next time you connect to the same network you don't have to reenter them.
Regarding Hotel hotspots, these are usually open networks (no encryption) with a captive portal. Support for PocketPC devices is usually ofered by most companies providing this service and should be no problem in that.
I've used PocketPC devices with wifi to connect in KubiWireless, Boingo, The Cloud and T-Mobile hotspots without problems.
Be aware that the wifi range of the TYTN is tight, and WM5 has some issue with wifi:
-No WPA2 support
-No aes cypher algorythm
-Buggy with PEAP auth + certs

Can the G1 detect and connect to Ad Hoc WiFi networks? My router is fried, and there are no open networks nearby with strong signal.
I made one under Linux and another one under Vista, the device doesn't see both and entering it manually does nothing.
I suppose it can't see AdHoc networks.

I believe that it CAN detect ad-hoc networks.
I setup an ad-hoc connection from my pc, and it detected it, but there was no network activity. I probably did something wrong, but, I am not sure why it didn't work.

I use USB Wi-fi adapter for wireless connection and I need to say that G1 don't allow to use adhoc connection, it need only wifi router.
Some month before I see the answer from T-Mobile support that G1 can't use adhoc connection.
It's sad, bcoz my last WM phone (Tytn) has no problems with adhoc connection...
Alas I feel your pain. I use adhoc for my iPhone frequently because at school I can only jack into an ethernet because the WiFi is protected. But my G1 can't so I am doomed to EDGE when i'm in my mom's classroom after school

is this a software issue that can be fixed or is it a hardware issue?
Software. In fact the phone can MAKE ad-hoc networks that other devices and computers can see and join. That's how WiFi tethering works. You can start a wifi tethering app and use the ad hoc connection it creates, without using the cellular tethering at all, or you can examine the tethering scripts and extract just the part concerning the wifi.
I experimented a bit, and was able to change almost everything needed to share Internet from the PC to the phone, except default gateway on the phone...

The important part is to tweak the windows part - you need to tell the broadband/adsl internet connection to share itself to the Private wireless network (the network manging your Wireless adapter). If you are having trouble with the windows part (say you connect and have full bars on the phone but no access to web) google ICS (internet connection sharing) in windows and you should get it working.
Before and after the recent TMOUS ROM upgrade, I have always been unable to access the internet with the wifi hotspot created by my iPhone as the wifi router, while my laptop and ipod touch could. Are there any special settings I have to do on HD2? Any suggestions? Thanks.
Now I could not even access internet via my hone wifi router - it used to be able to right after the ROM upgrade last hight...
Have you checked your wifi settings, you may have to re-configure your HD2 to your network.
I have updated my ROM to 2.13 but didn't encounter this issue.
Yes I did check the wireless controls (comm manager) for connections many times and showed clearly it was connected to my home wifi router network; but it just could not access internet ("Error! Connection closed by remote server"). I must have missed something in configuring wifi settings properly... Would you be kind enough to show how/what to re-config the wifi settings to access internet? My other mobile devices could access internet via the same home wifi router without having to re-config anything...
I figured out the problem
I noticed that the wifi IP address for my HD2 was completely different from those of my other mobile devices on the same home wifi router, so it dawned to me that I might have inadvertently put it on a different wifi network. I decided to re-flash the new TMOUS ROM (2.13) upgrade, and go through the wifi setup again more carefully. It turned out that last time when the setup asked me if I would use "TLS" wireless network for authentication, I tapped the "wireless network" button - although I should have ignored it and tapped the "next" button instead, which I did this time. Now I could access internet via my home wifi router, as well as via the wifi hotspot created by my other mobile device. So the problem is considered SOLVED.
Hope this post is helpful for those who might be experiencing similar problem as I have been.
or maybe your phone felt insulted you were trying to connect it to the internet via an inferior children's phone (iPh#$% - sorry no cursing allowed) and just said no. i bet if you tried using your PC (not M*C) as a hotspot, or a dlink (lol) you hd2 would connect perfectly.

I tried to search but couldn't find definitive answer. My issue is opposite to general trend to switch off mobile and use wifi only.
I have apple TV without any internet connection (i.e. no modem connected to it) which I use to steam video/audio and it acts as an AP. I use Twonky on G-Tab (P1000) and it requires wifi for it to work. OK, fine. It does work on wifi and steams to Apple TV no issues, but as long as I am connected to wifi network, I can't use internet on my Tab (as I quoted above, my this Apple TV AP wireless network is without any internet connection, so I can't have net over it unless I buy a wired ADSL modem along with data plan and then connect it ti Apple TV). I have a reasonable mobile data plan on Tab's SIM and it works all time, except when I connect to any wireless network. Here's the catch, dumb Samsung thought that all and each wirless network always has internet connection or if there is a wireless network, it must have had internet connection! But anyway, this annoying behaviour prevents me from accessing net over mobile data plan as long as I am connected to any wifi network, be it has internet or not.
I tried and serached and also explored setting on my rooted tab, but no luck?
Any thing am I missing?

It's not so much dumb Samsung, as just the way Android works.
The following link details how this can be achieved, but only by modifying AOSP source and recompiling Android from scratch.

Can't you do it the other way around by enabling a mobile hotspot to your Tab, and connecting your Apple TV to this instead?

WiFi Tethering to a WiFi Router / Network
Yes, IF your wifi router will accept wifi as an input.
If all of the devices need to be on a network OTHER than your cell phone, then yes, you need a router. The router will have to accept wifi as it's source.
If all of the devices can be on the same wifi network as your cell, then you can get a wifi repeater or range extender. Repeaters "extend" the range that wifi will reach. I don't see that as an issue here as should be able to place your cell phone well within range of your other wifi-enabled devices.
I don't immediately see why you can't have all of the devices connect to your phone directly, but I don't know anything about the application you are working on.
What I cannot say is whether this setup could bypass the number of wifi devices your service provider limits you to. I know my hotspot (Verizon) limits you to five concurrent.

This is a very specific setup.
The router is an Airlink NMini and I carry in my pocket. It has to be near my camera for the wifi connection to work. I get a lot of interference from wireless equipment on my photoshoots. The Wifi router is trong enough to overpower the interference (only when used in B-mode). It's hooked up to a 5 volt power pack.
Close to me I have an Android tablet for quick selecting the right images, then the images are copied over to a remote laptop that is used by my colleage to edit the images.
I needed the internet connection for sending the processed images to a ftp server or dropbox, so my clients can download the images.
I tried using the router as a relay/bridge, but couldn't get that to work. Maybe it's possible, but that's higher networking config.
I finally got it to work by connecting the phone to the laptop using usb.
Configured the laptop for ICS connecting the USB-internet connection to the wireless router. Had to set ip adresses manually, becaue the dhcp of the router did not transmit the correct gateway. But as there are only 2 devices attached, that's not a problem after documenting this change.
So I'm good to go for our next photo assigment. Case closed.
