Tips for New Phone - Asus ZenFone 3 Questions & Answers

Hi Experts,
I have just purchased the ZE552KL model. Do you guys have any tips or anything that is recommended for a newly purchased phone? Like are there any settings that needs to be changed, or any app that would be safe to uninstall?
I also noticed that my volume and power knockers are quite wiggly, is this normal?
Thanks!!

This a matter of opinions, I did the following :
1. Disabled / uninstalled bloatware or unused apps
2. Set autostart apps
3. Manage notifications
As for the wiggly buttons, mine were perfectly tight and steady.

Thank you for the suggestions and confirming that the buttons are supposed to be tight and steady, I will have to bring this back to the shop for a replacement.

Disable volume button camera/quick memo shortcuts?

Has anyone found a way to disable these shortcuts at all? I have the Verizon G2 and it's getting kind of annoying opening these when I don't want to.
There is no setting for this, but I'm sure it can be done with a mod.

This Xposed module will do the trick: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2477586
I've been trying to do this the other way around - my hardware buttons were effectively disabled! I've just discovered that the QuickWindow case (when closed) disables the hardware buttons from launching the Camera and QuickMemo apps...
Solution: Fit a QuickWindow case (or glue a magnet to the screen!
B.
So no real solution yet, except from getting the pro G2Xposed?!
G2Xposed makes apps stopping, so this is not the best solution.
Still looking for solution of disabling Vol +/- buttins in blocked status.

other than using the power button to turn it on, and crossing my fingers that this will get re-enabled in Android 4.5/5 around July/August, no :/
Also annoyed that the auto-brightness+ setting is now gone, but that at least was fixable through the Lux app.
Brightness button did not disappear on mine. Sprint S4
Any solution for the home button?
It's a world wide issue with all tw KitKat updates.

Couple alternatives. Wanam with Xposed could fix it. Also, a different launcher would let you set it too.

Thx bud,
I don't think that the prob is from the launcher, as it doesn't work with other launchers neither (I don't use TW, also it is working normally with s-view cover opened).
I have Wanam with xposed, but don't find any option like that... could you help me out? Thx a lot!
I found another strange issue, don't know if you have it , too. If I deactivate auto-unlock when I open s-view cover, it still unlocks when I open it... even after restart.
Edit: Found the solution for other issue: Nils Notification was set to always unlock when cover opened, nothing to do with rom... My fault

In Wanam, under System, there is a section for Long Home key behavior, can you not, Launch S Voice from there?
I use Google Now, and this is how I launch that.
As for S-view, I can't help with that, I dont have that.

MIUI notes/tips

I don't know about anyone else, but this is my first MIUI phone.
I thought it would be useful to start a thread regarding MIUI notes/tips/etc that are specific to MIUI.
The first big one of course - how to fix push notifications:
http://www.forbes.com/sites/bensin/...ions-on-xiaomis-miui-8-for-real/#11f834174e1b
I was about to start this very thread
I found a cool feature
You can select several photos for deleting by simply gliding your fingers over the photos
Another cool feature
You can orient that device do that it's upside
The top bezel-less becomes downwards.
The phone is also programmed to rotate it to the standard orientation during a phone call because of Mic location.
One thing I quite like is how specific WIFI connects can be disabled without having to remove them.
Our work WIFI blocks certain things, so it's nice to be able to disable it but not have
to totally remove it (and then reenter all the passwords when I re-enter it).

For each WIFI connection, there is a little > to the right of it.
If you touch that you go into another menu, and one option is 'auto connect on/off'.
Turning off autoconnect helps in situations where there are multiple WIFI signals, but you only want it autoconnecting to a specific one.

2 finger swipe on notifications displays their details (or what is called Peek)

Thanks for clarifying.
What if I'm in the range of two networks that I've saved the passwords for.
Which does the mi mix connect to when I enter range?
Looks like the last one I've connected to.

That's actually a primitive way of doing it.
Samsung did it better by letting you 'peek' one-handedly with a simple swipe down of the notification.
With mi mix, I have to use two hands. I can do it with one hand but it's tough.

And just found out, we can't "swipe away" the notifications from the lockscreen directly. Need to pull down the shade and clear from there. Would this not be considered a stupid decision?!

Perhaps there's a solution if you root/install Xposed & a module is available for lockscreen options.
I'm rooted, but, haven't used Xposed in ages, considering trying it again......
On Samsung devices,(non-root) Ad Blocking apps have a persistent notification on the lockscreen that cannot be swiped away,.The only remedy for this was to turn off the ad blocking.

I followed all the steps.
I understood that there are several instances of settings and installed apps.
I went through all of them but still could not disable or uninstall pre-loaded apps like Mi Credit, Mi Cloud and all those Mi nonsense apps.

Those are uninstallable I guess (as Mi earns from these apps and not selling the phone), few rubbish were uninstalled using this method.
I should be able to disable them though
Apparently not
Some more MIUI notes:
menu + volume down = screenshot
hardware test: dial *#*#6484#*#*
More phone info: dial *#*#4636#*#*
There is a toggle to disable the navigation buttons (double tap them to re-enable)
handy if you keep accidentally hitting them.
in 'buttons' can auto disable for any particular app (games)
In accessibility there is a magnification mode - triple tap to allow/disable zooming of screen. (EDIT: it's bugged - it isn't supposed to trigger during keyboard typing, but it does, effectively making it useless)
wake with volume buttons is in lockscreen menu, not "button"
There are some apps that just won't stay uninstalled. Anyone got idea how to remove them? PPTV for example

Missing Icons/Apps - Galaxy S7 w/Nougat

I have a Galaxy S7. My carrier is Verizon. I recently received the Nougat upgrade for my phone. Everything was going great after the upgrade until I put my phone in Max Power Saving mode.
After turning Max Power Saving Mode off, I noticed that all my apps on the home screen were missing. The shortcut to my camera was missing. Most of my application icons were missing when looking at the full list of installed applications.
On restart, my camera icon returned. None of the shortcut icons I had on the home screen were there. All of my applications were showing up in the full list of applications.
I would like to find a way to restore all the icons I had on my launcher before the upgrade. They were there after the upgrade, but before I put my phone in Max Power Saving mode.
All help is very much appreciated.
Same Verizon Nougat Issues
I upgraded to 7.0 on my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. BIG mistake! First, my keyboard became mostly unresponsive. Then after a re-boot nearly every App button left the home screens. Now, I cannot bring them back, because now holding down an APP button to move an App back to the home screen cannot be done. Nothing happens. Other issues are there, but these are the most important.

Galaxy apps. It's pre-installed and is updated . Don't use it unless you keep fingerprint unlock on. It causes apps to not show. That's why I asked if you were using it.

The original main question (where did all my shortcuts go?) was basically caused by doing something that you didn't understand - turning On Max Power Saving. What did you think this would do? It made changes to maximize power saving which included remove other than default Widgets/Shortcuts. So if you like a heavy desktop with your choice of objects all over it that is OK, just turn Off Max Power Saving and then you can add whatever you want. Unless you enjoy these kind of surprises that come from "let me just try this and see what happens" it is best to research what the effects are before flipping the switch.
It's not about what he/she likes, it's about having unexpected behavior after turning USPM off. This was not an issue with previous versions of Android. Please make sure you understand the question.

Letting application run in the background of the operating system in android 7 EMUI 5

How to let the application run in the background of the operating system in android 7 EMUI 5.0, Huawei-Mat 8?
In the previous version, Android 6, the application should be kept in the Protected Apps, but after updating the operating system the Protected Apps disappeared.
Click the square button on home screen, select your app, and click the Lock on its upper-right corner.

Actually I got this solution also, in the last week, and I kept it for three days. Unfortunately it is not working.
Even I made factory data reset. I reinstalled all my apps again. Again the same result.

It doesn't say it anywhere but you have to restart the phone for each change there to take effect.

Ooho, the same problem came again after three days.
I'm trying this setting on mysms to get it to work all the time.
Not receiving notifications when you should be? Here's a Huawei oddity that we've found to be irksome with some apps not sending alerts/notifications even when all settings are apparently correct (WhatsApp is our problematic one). It's to do with EMUI's strict power efficiency. If you stop receiving notifications try this (to access Ignore Optimisations): access Apps (method above) > hit the blue settings cog icon to the bottom > select Special Access under the Advanced tab > Unrestricted Data Access. Here apps can be granted always-on data irrelevant of what other settings state. source: www.pocket-lint.com/news/140204-hua...-tricks-take-charge-of-your-mate-9-p9-honor-8
