What happens if I update being rooted? - Moto G4 Plus Questions & Answers

Hey guys, what happens if I update while I get rooted? My phone suggests me the 139.50 update, but I'm rooted, will it work? Do I need to root it again after the update?
Thank you I'm sorry for the stupid questions. This is my first post with this account, I'm not that newbie but I've never had a Motorola phone.

Since you're rooted, I'm assuming you probably have a custom recovery like TWRP installed.
Any official update (OTA) will work only with a stock Android recovery installed.
This means no, you cannot have an OTA update once you root. However, there is a thread on this forum somewhere which has a very reliable but slightly complicated method of getting OTA updates even of rooted.
You may refer to that. And ya, welcome to the XDA family!

Thank you so much. It looks way harder than I thought. You need to update each version til the latest one. SMH. I'm not trying to be spoon fed here. But do you remember the keywords to this thread?
LOL it seems like it's gonna be a long day to update my phone.

No offense but one of these threads get started every day. I would try and search the forum first for your answer before posting. Also if you are new too rooting it is ever so important that you read the stickies in here first. Rooting and updating are not a big deal, everyone worries about an update that will be posted in the forum either prior too or directly after its released. Lets not act like after we get the official update we wont be rooting the phone again.
Again not trying to be rude but come on do you think you are honestly the first person to ask that question... Again don't take this the wrong way just trying to help
This guide may help you, as help me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2145848

No problem, like I said no offense and I was not attacking you personally and too me if this is not your first rodeo then you should of known how to find the answer. Again no offense and no problem just root and enjoy and with all the toolkits unrooting updating and re-rooting should not be an issue. Take Care :good:

Sprint Unlocked Bootloader 4.4

Just curious, did anybody on Sprint with an unlocked bootloader get KitKat? I wonder if that's the reason I didn't get it yet...
Sent from my XT1056 using Tapatalk
Yeah I've got an unlocked bootloader and was able to update to kit kat but I had to manually update
Sent from my XT1056 using Tapatalk
Could you elaborate on how you updated to 4.4? My bootloader is unlocked with cwm recovery installed. Im assuming I need to revert to stock recovery?
I am completely stock and haven't gotten it yet.
ok here ya go
so since no one else answered yet. go to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2452246
and grab the system dump but dont follow his instructions they didnt work for me. if you keep reading thorough it you will find all you need to do is download the system dump and place it in the root of your storage. after that give the phone a reboot and click check for updates. it will find it and ask you if u want it moved and installed and will do it for you.

Thanks for the reply, that thread seems to make everything unnecessarily complicated, but I still can't seem to find out if this method will work with custom recovery. I'm rooted with cwm, do I need stock recovery to do this? I'm on a 2yr contract, don't wanna risk a brick by trying uninformed.

I would stay away. Everything I've read on the other thread points to you will soft or hard brick the phone. It basically needs to be stock everything, and possibly locked bootloader, for this to work and not brick. I might be a bit off, but I do know that those who are stock and locked haven't seemed to have any issues.
For all of you still waiting, I just had the following chat with a Sprint Rep:
Ciera B.: Hi
You: Hi, I have a Sprint Motorola Moto X and the I know that an update to the Android Software is being pushed out since last week
You: Would you know how long it might take for it to show up on my phone?
Ciera B.: A software update to 13.11.3Q2.X-69-3-8 will roll out for the Motorola Moto X (XT1056) beginning Thursday, 12/12/13 for 1000 users.
Full Client and Network Initiated Updates begin Wednesday, 12/18/13.
You: Does that mean that by tomorrow everybody should have it?
Ciera B.: All Moto X users will get it beginning Wednesday, 12/18/13.
You: So from 12/12 through 12/18 only 1000 users, the rest are getting it from 12/18?
Ciera B.: Right
You: thanx!!
Ciera B.: You're welcome.
Ciera B.: Is there anything else I can assist you with today?
Ciera B.: Thank you. Happy holidays and Merry Christmas to you !

Unlocked bootloader is fine you just need to flash the camera update via toolkit to restore stock recovery then put the 44 update on the root of your card and check for updates so it updates the phone then you flash twrp or cwm and apply root again

You need stock kernel, stock recovery and absolutely no changes in /system partition including root.
Oh, just to be precise - you can actually receive an update if you´re not fully stock but you won´t be able to apply it.
Edit: Philz recovery and root can be actually in place, tested that today.

Doing a backup and restore now
I got it to. I honestly may never root my phone again. I had so much trouble getting back to stock. Now instead of it saying "Locked" in download mode, it says "Re-locked" which I hope doesn't affect my chances to update to 6.0. But I did get the same update yesterday as well.
if you can update normally you can always use RUU
If not that I will upload fresh working rom for you
anyone install this update yet? ideas and experience with it's performance on the metropcs 626s? i am wondering if i should update it now, or wait for a little while. i followed the excellent guides here to unlock the bootloader and root the phone. thank you so much.

Quadrooter

So apparently our phone is vulnerable to a newly founded exploit being dubbed "Quadrooter" that allows for privilege escalation. Do any of you think that this could lead to root on marshmallow if used right?
EDIT: Link to CNET article - http://www.cnet.com/news/quadrooter-security-flaws-said-to-affect-over-900-million-android-devices/
Saw this today. Curious to know as well. Not that this might be any use for me anymore as I'm still waiting to see if LG will fix my bootloop issue.

That's unfortunate. I fear it may be any day for me. We're there any signs before it hit the hay?
I am curious how they claim to be able to gain root access on multiple phones running marshmallow. DM Verity in the kernel is supposed to stop a phone with modifications from voting, so I am not sure how it's supposed to work, unless it's only some form of temp root. Kind of corps of this will be the next 'towel root'. Probably not, but I could hope I guess.
I have the ATT model and would love rooted MM. Hopefully this vulnerability can be used to our benefit.
I hope my H815t could be rooted by that
I have H815T and it's rooted, bootloader is unlocked and running Genysis 4.3 with G5 theme.
But I found the four vulnerabilities in my phone too.
What to do now?

The vulnerabilities are because your processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon). So, you can't do anything until LG implement arrangements in an update (OTA, KDZ).

You must flash a KDZ (for your G4 model) with LGUP. You'll lose root access, and OTA updates will be enabled. Or you can wait, and flash the KDZ with the fixes.

Thanks for your help.
Actually I have a stock marshmellow rooted rom which I flashed it a day ago and OTA updates are enabled on that.
Another question, where do the updates store? On rom or some where in the recovery partition etc?
Why I'm asking this, I like Genysis rom so if I restore my device to Stock rooted 6.0 and get the air updates in september etc, will the updates remain on the device if I flash the rom(back to Gynesis)?

You can't apply a official OTA with a rooted device without a error.
And the updates are in the firmware (aka ROM), so if you change de ROM, you will lose all updates.
What to do?
Install drweb antivirus for check apps before install.
This is the unic risk i found.
