My Pixel XL Review after 2 weeks use - Google Pixel XL Guides, News, & Discussion

It's a little long and I even feel I rushed through a couple of areas, but finally got it done -
Happy to take comments
Also, if there's a general reviews thread, happy to close this and move in with the others (I had a look and couldn't see one)

Design Choice for my case

Please to refer to the new poll I posted on the General forums with 1 new design and color version of design 2 & 3. Go to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=479776
thankyou again.
38 views and no one actually able to look at 2 pictures and choose which one they liked more?
for shame!
I had higher hopes for the forums.
I rather like ur first one better.
Even though it's more difficult to make out what initials they are, but i think it looks more intresting.
So i would go for the first one.
But still good work i must admit. I really like both designs even though i'd prefer the first one more.
First one definitely. Second one seems a bit too busy for my liking, unless you're into that.
Design 1 attract more attention at the initial look.
perhaps cos of the black background.
After some thought, Design 2 actually looks better.
Pehaps if you were to change the background color of Design 2.
It will give others better comparison.
just my 2 cents
Sure. I'll recolor design 2 and put in design 3 that I just came up with.
I'll post a new poll later for you guys to take a gander at.
After some back breaking work coloring in the 2nd design. I've posted a new Poll thread so that it will incorporate design 3.

[Q] Response time of the display..? (not touchpad)

Hi Forum,
first time logged in here, because i expect, that here are a lot of owners of the nexus 7.
I'm struggling with some kind of luxury problem. It's about this display of the Nexus 7:
For me it seems, that is has not only a bad calibration in the sense of colour, but also
a miserable response time in common.
I mean this thing, which was a big topic for TFTs years ago for gamers.
Remember this <16ms thing to play FPS and other games without ghosting, tearing or whatever is the right word.
Or remember your old Nokia phone in a strong winter. Similar effects..
My Nexus 7 is from the C90 Charge and i see it clearly by reading text (websites, mails) and also in games. They "smear".
For my eyes this is very stressful. I think it's because of a bad response time of the screen, but it's just guessed since i have no other explanation for this.
Anyway, i wanted to crosscheck in a local store, if this is just normal or a defective unit, but it's sold out since a week and still no new delivery.
So i wanted to ask you, if you made some differences in comparison to other devices. For example i got a HTC Desire and Sensation here, and they do it much better, much faster.
Thank you for reply and thanks to the forum generally.
Ciao,
le-grx

One owners, reviews and opinions please!

Hi guys,
Recently sold my Xperia Z as personally I thought it was a huge dissapointment IMO. So now I have the cash again to splash on a phone but need some real user experiences and reviews from people who have received their devices today.
If possible I am looking for any information about the things you like or don't like. Any suprises or dissapointments. Camera/Video samples. Screen comparisons with existing devices.
I understand it is early days but hopefully over the next couple of days, or until at least HTC sort the stock problems out, I will have an idea if I should go ahead with buying this device. I also know therer are many reviews posted across this forum, but I am looking for real user experiences which will hopefully help people like myself decide on if this is the phone for us.
Thanks all!
Some first impressions
- It looks and feels like a piece of advanced alien technology - it makes my brothers iPhone 5 look cheap
- Screen is amazing. Tried the Xperia Z in store, this screen is miles ahead. Viewing angles and saturation is top notch.
- This is the first time I've liked sense, and haven't felt compelled to stick CM on it as soon as possible
- It gets a tad warm if you use it for ages, but it's not too bad

OnePlus 5T User Opinions and Reviews

Devices are shipping and some of us will be receiving them in the next couple of days! So, if you have a OnePlus 5T, give us your first impressions and thoughts about the device. Unboxing pics are encouraged as well
Who will go first? I'm guessing @Stephen.
I've written a review for the Oneplus 5T, it can be found here! https://www.protonbar.com/mobile-phones/2018/2/12/oneplus-5t
I've been using mine for a while now and I'm really pleased. I'm coming from a Galaxy S7 International, which I've been using for about 2 years.
Screen - The S7 screen has higher res & can get brighter. I can occasionally see pixels on the 5T (esp. with small fonts), but otherwise it's a great AMOLED screen. Surprisingly, the S7 has a much worse blue/green shift problem at higher angles. And the 5T has a very obvious 1" size advantage.
Camera - The S7 camera will be missed. It takes sharper, more reliable pictures. The 5T can't even come close in low light. But, it still is a decent camera.
Battery life - a huge improvement with the 5T, easily gaining well over an extra hour of SOT.
The fingerprint scanner on the 5T is another massive improvement. I even like the rear location, which I resisted at first.
I'm much happier with the 5T's aluminum build than the S7's glass & metal sandwich.
Oxygen OS over Touchwiz is no contest. Glad to be rid of it! Looking forward to Lineage...
So, I'm pretty pleased other than the camera being a bit of a downgrade. The bootloader is unlocked and TWRP installed, so I'm heading off to the development section
So, I have been using the OP5T for a week now (ok, 8 days) and come from Nexus devices, and the following is my user review:
First day received, I was initially a little disappointed in how narrow and tall the phone was, vs. a little shorter and wider (similar to the Nexus 6 build). I was wondering if I should return it because I had wanted a wider phone. I knew it was a 6.01 screen and bigger than my Nexus 6P so I assumed it would be bigger in all aspects but was just as narrow. But I decided to keep it.
I unlocked bl, rooted, using Funk Wizard's guide which was super easy, then flashed Freedom ROM and bluespark kernel. I initially had issues with TWRP and originally flashed the ibe version but then ended up flashing bluespark TWRP. If I didn't remove security - PIN password and entered into TWRP, it would boot in a scrambled way that was unusable. I soft bricked by my own fault by accidentally wiping system, and used the all in one tool just to easily rescue and flash the bluespark TWRP and then rebuilt everything.
Since that point, I have absolutely loved this device and looked past the narrow/tall build. The screen is beautiful. I left the screen protector on that it came with until yesterday, then I removed it and the screen is so much better looking. I always go commando with my devices but keep them in leather fitbag pouches and handle with care. It is a slippery phone especially once without screen protector but it's a sleek device and I don't want to cover the screen or body. Feels so good in hand, and after having gold and white phones for a few years, I welcome the black.
Using Xposed mods and will start to see what Substratum themes work. It really flies on Freedom ROM and bluespark kernel. Very smooth. I almost bought a Pixel 2 XL and don't regret the decision.
OP5T users - enjoy!

Daily I am more and more frustrated with this phone. I thought I could live with these shortcomings but they are increasingly annoying. Camera is **** just **** I had the N6 forever finally had to move on but couldn't find anything that would meet all needs, so used moto z play while I search for something new. Other then the obvious (screen and speed) there is nothing op5t offer that is better then z. Moto enhancements are superior to op5t but both cameras equally suck. DnD slider would be great it the original dnd function worked but it doesn't so the slider is crap. Pics with hdr on the n6 are simply better on such an old phone. Op5t ambient display is annoying why go so dark, their update speed is poor the dialer app is awful. Theming is poor and very limited why is my navbar white everywhere? All the enhancements I thought would be great are very limited night mode has one schedule cannot have weekend or slow change. Navbar button enhancements are limited and cannot chose an app but are limited with their few option. Dash charger awesome so fast but only with their cord and dash brick stupid apple move and not consumer friendly. All these things that op says is an enhancements of Android are either slightly better or actually a step back from stock and the compromises are not worth it I wish I had kept ph1. Now I will have to go through the pain of selling it on the secondary market since it's past 15 days.

Just like the pain we had to go through reading this childish rant not once, but twice. You have literally got to be the only person who has nothing positive to say about the phone.

There are plenty of positives speed looks screen relatively stock software though slowly updated and lunched with 7.1. I read all the reviews I know they are positive. Face unlock is great though not as convenient as smart unlock which unfortunately currently doesn't work annoyingly. You calling me childish says a lot about you. I fully realize it's a rant you don't like it don't ready it and note it's very childish to comment twice on a post.
I recognize they you will probably want to have the last word if you do know I will not answer. However, if you have a constructive question I will be more then happy to respond.

We should respect every opinion. Its obvious it has nothing to do with reality but still its your's and i respect it. If im not wrong i think i read the exact same text on some OP5T video reviews on Youtube. So, something smells fishy here. After your description it sound even Nokia 1100 is better than OP5T.
I've had the 5T 4 days, after 2 weeks from a busted 6p. Overall I am very happy with it.
PROs:
1. Speed, mainly doing nandroid backups. I can backup or restore a 7gb file in 95-115 seconds (compared to 8-10 minutes with my 6p). So now I bu anything stable before testing anything.
2. Speed, booting up.
3. Did I say speed?
4. Battery life! 8-9 hrs SOT with same use as 6p which gave me 3.5-4.5. (95% on home WiFi)
CONs:
1. Ugly pastel accent choices.
2. Incompatibility with substratum framework overlays.
3. Very ugly white Navbar with Black Theme.
4. Having to press buttons to reboot 2 times more than you should need to.
5. Volume button location (I liked them on right on 6p)
All else I feel is a wash. Camera functions are better, but image quality is about the same. If I had a choice of 5T or 6P, is choose the 5T for speed. Hoping they'll fix some of the cons. Oreo update should do that.

Essentially what I did is switched from n6 to 5t as my daily driver. The speed and battery are amazing compared to n6 but it is a bit of a sacrifice to leave google proper. Dialer is annoying on the 5t and some features are borked like smart unlock (hopefully fixed soon ). Obviously phone still on 7.x. Screen and face unlock pretty damn good too but screen isn't that much of a difference unless you consider looking at it in the sun where 5t outperforms by far. Biggest difference for me is the camera n6 with hdr take much much much better pictures even though hdr on my is painfully slow. DnD is also supper annoying on 5t vs google proper because it's not automatic. I have the 5t now I thought all the software additions on top of pure google would be awesome but though useful they are somewhat limited and the sacrifice are to big to overcome. I plan on selling the 5t and getting pixel 2 xl.
Excellent phone but the camera is let down by the lack of OIS and decent image processing. Not much denoising happens and the shutter speed is fast compared to my old phone (used to be around 1/17 when OP5T is 1/33) this cranks the ISO and so is noisier.
Also the second camera is useless really. I thought the 20MP was for pixel merging but it doesn't do that. Why? Hopefully it comes in a new update but they have had bad press about poor low light performance now.
Also the big Cluster stays on all the time, not good really as battery suffers. In power save mode it should go off.
Also why is One Plus still using that Android power saver. Use the Lineage power slider!!

can you just flash it with original Andrioid?
Performance 9/10
Phone Design 8/10
Software 7/10
Camera 4/10 (my late nexus 5x was way better)
Regret 6/10
Google cam ported for Oneplus 5T
Has anyone used the GCam ported for Oneplus 5T? I have been using it, but it crashes most of the time when I switch to front camera

On the fence, would love other users point of view

Sorry if there's a thousand and one types of these threads already on this forum. I am coming from a OnePlus 5t. I got it right at launch because a friend got a 5 and I heard the t variant was going to be better. Fast forward to now. I hit the trigger on an 8pro and I just finished setting it up.
Maybe it's buyer's remorse because I dropped 1k on it. Maybe it's because I'm letting a lot of people's distaste for the phone influence me. Maybe it's the rumors about how the 8t will probably get all the stuff like the camera and screen bugs fixed.
I kinda want to see if I can return the phone and wait out for the 8t/8t pro. My 5t is running fine. A little battery wear and my charging port is garbage and won't warp charge unless I put it in a super specific spot. However it has zero lag and I haven't had a single software problem.
Anyone else in my shoes? I love OP and I have faith in them delivering a really good product in a few months. I just kinda keep getting this thought in the back of my head that I don't want to play the lottery with this phone. The phone is an obvious upgrade but nothing has wowed me. Camera feels like the colors feel off and that was the feature I was really looking forward to.
Also would I even get a full refund? I've never had to deal with OnePlus customer service.
Why not just wait for the oneplus 43 pro? There is always going to be a better phone just found the corner. I got the 8 pro couple of days ago and love it. I am not a photographer but the photographs look brilliant to my untrained eye. I haven't gone looking for any screen issues and haven't seen any in normal use.
