Anyone else having 50% + of Ram being used on startup, even though the phone is very aggressive on memory management (which is also annoying)?
More ram more ram usage...that's normal otherwise why you have to have it!!!

Why would the system need a 3gb of ram? I know 6gb is great and I'm never short on ram (never passed 4gb usage)

I've read that 1 of the 2gb of RAM is used for the touchwiz so you effectively only have 1gb. If you install a custom rom, ie. cyanogenmod, do you get to use the full 2gb then?

Pretty sure its ICS that takes up the space and its not a full GB. I don't have the phone but a friend has around 1.6 - 1.7 Gigs free at max.
I don't think that would work out, considering the international GS3 has 1GB of RAM and runs TouchWiz.
So much confusion, let's spell this out. First of all our phones have 2gb ram, period. The GPU requires about 0.38gb of the system's 2gb because it doesn't have its own onboard memory. So no matter what software you run, you'll be starting out around 1.62 available.
Different operating systems, frameworks, skins, and applications will have different memory footprints. Touchwiz is probably a bit heavier than AOSP (CM/AOKP), so after a clean boot you'll probably have more free ram running an AOSP variant.
Honestly its all kind of moot at this point however, because I doubt in either situation most people get anywhere near using the all remaining RAM with current ROM offerings. Key lime pie may be another story.
Yeah to his point about not using the RAM is just stupid, unused ram is wasted ram meaning you have it for nothing, for example on stock cm9 you got 1.2 gb free most of the time, 500-600mb free, touchwiz manage ram better but still leaves a lot behind, look up what ram does and you will understand why unused ram is useless

Isn't it ideal to have unused RAM so that when you open apps and multitask, you the memory to keep them alive? Maybe I'm misinterpreting, but if we never had unused Ram then we would never be able to multitask, right?

To a certain extent, I for one think there's no reason to try and utilize all of it for nothing. And it's pointless to complain about having extra

" This has to do with extremes. Remember that every so many cycles (don't remember on current ram), your memory has to completely refresh its contents. If you have an extra 16GB that you never use, then you waste time refreshing all of that ram. Also on this note, higher densities, and larger quantities are harder on your controller. For maximum speed and stability, use ram appropriate for your usage pattern"

While that is true, ram come in discrete chunks and 2 gb is noticeably better than 1. At a certain threshold the memory manager kills off old apps to free up ram. More ram means more recently used apps remain loaded and available sooner plus i have no issues with many pages open in a browser. I typically run with around 600 mb free. Only my dell streak i would often be under 100 and unless i manually closed apps it really bogged down.

1gb of ram is not for TW and the rest for apps....its 2gb total...in reality like 15mb total

Thats normal if you buy a 8gb flashdrive you only have 7.7gb and if you have a 250gb hdd you can only use 230gb

Yes, it always happen. In specification sheet of external hard disk or flash drive. 1GB is treated as 1000MB(mine does) not 1024MB(actual size)
My phone also have 512mb ram and I installed 32mb ram hack. My phone is LG Optimus 2x speed

The real reason is that graphics takes 128MB for itself. Then, the kernel needs some memory for the display itself (the pixels) and for video decoder/encoder.
So in total you will have about ~350MB of usable RAM for apps (including Android).
I am using some RAM boosters and they all report that I have only 1GB of RAM. I thought this device was supposed to come with 2GB. Is there a problem with how this reports it, or is there some problem with the tablet. Does anyone know how to get the system to report the right amount of RAM, or is there a RAM tester I can use to test the RAM?

Not a nice way for Google to sell stuff without being clear, but that's the way it is unfortunately

I see in the runnings apps section in settings that the total ram being shown is just 1 gb
Hi guys.
I've been quite bothered by the fact that 4gb ram phones coming up, so I decided that I would do a test on how my LG phone handles the ram. I hope some experienced android users can clarify this for me because the only other android device I've had is a android tablet which I've played quite a bit with on my own.
I thought I wanted to do a stress test to see of the device would lag after having used all available ram. Problem is just I wasn't able to use all ram even with over a dozen open apps and so on. While I now have clarified that more than 2gb of ram really isn't needed ATM I would really love an explanation of why I wasn't able to get below 400 Mb free ram. When using the device normally I occasionally see only 300 Mb of free ram. Anyway the device was still working smoothly without lags and stutter

just the way android ram works really. Its different then windows, where no free ram means performance issues. Like no free disk space on Iphones.

Of course it is enough + you won't keep your phone for more than 2-3 years. TouchWiz got better, but not perfect. My phone still has ~1.5 GB of Ram left. My notebook has 4 GB Ram with fast SSD, don't see any slowdowns on Win 10 Pro.
With the poor ram management 2.5 GB is enough because at no point it uses more than that on our phones. I have apps refreshing when I come back but only half of ram is being used.
in my opinion, 4gb is not enough..... For that kind of high-end phone, samsung should have put 6Go at least into it. I'm talking about ram managment which is pretty bad in android and when you take a look at speedtests (even if this is not reflecting real daily uses) you can see than phone with 6go of ram are able to keep many apps in memory way better than the s8. When you start to run heavy apps or games, the built-in memory killer kills a lots of background app and then when you need to switch back into an other recent app, the phone almost reload it :'( That's frustrating
4GB Ram is enough. More RAM means more apps running in background which means more battery consumption. So 4GB looks a good balance here atleast for S8 which has only 3000 mah battery.
i don't think so excuse me. Of course, more ram maybe means more battery consumption but i prefer that and kill apps runing in background manually to keep battery life rather than the os kills things that i still need :/
When you have 4gb then 4gb isnt enough, when you have 6gb then 6gb isn't enough... its never enough.
4GB is enough for most any smartphone. I also have a OnePlus 3 with 6GB ram and while it can keep more programs running in the background, it never totally accesses the entire 6GB ram. 4 is enough, and please after buying it do not ask about why just a little of it is free! The ram is for holding services and apps in background so cpu should not work again to bring them up, if it's filled do not be sad, it's natural.

Why should you want to keep many apps in memory? The S8 loads them so quick anyway.
Who needs in real day use to keep in memory 5-6 games plus 6-7 apps ? That's what they are doing in speed test , but in every day use it's not need for 6-8 GB ram in this moment. In my opinion for the manufacturer it's simpler to put more ram in a phone instead a better over all optimization.
