SOLVED.* Hi, all. I usually have a ton of audiobooks, seminars, etc on my sd card and I listen to them via a separate and dedicated audiobook app.
It'd be so great to start my new phone with more ease/less clutter: I'm really tired of slogging through hundreds of spoken word files when I open my music player to choose music.
Any way/any player that will let me hide tracks selectively so that only my music shows up?

Put everyday music like in separate folder. Alsoake sure player only uses that folder. For other files you need to pit a .nomedia in folder so players ignore that.

I always keep separate folders, so that's done. SD card has a folder for audiobooks, and SmartAudiobooks already knows that's the root folder for those.
I also have a music folder on the sd card, and, ideally, that'd be the only folder I want a music player to look for music.
When you mentioned the .nomedia file, I looked it up and saw that google play offered some for this purpose -- but reviews all complained that those apps were useless as the sd card was not searched. So I searched on how to make one or find one elsewhere and I guess my search skills are missing something.

You can also place a period in front of folder name to game similar result
A .nomedia file is just a blank text file but has the filename of ".nomedia", any text editor can create a new file but make sure you save it with the .nomedia filename.

*SOLUTION Much heartfelt thanks to repliers!
The easiest way to do this is to download a handy app called ES File Explorer from the play store, install it, then open and go to the folder whose media you wish to hide. Once there, click the upper right dotted menu, choose new, then file, then rename the file .nomedia. At this point you are asked to rechoose the folder you wish to hide. Choose it, and you're done! SmartAudiobooks still recognizes all my audiobooks but the music app blissfully ignores them.
What's best is that ES File Explorer makes the .nomedia file work on the SD folders ... after learning about .nomedia from the helpful folks on this thread, I made the file using my desktop but I could NOT get the music player to ignore it, and had a hard time making the PC allow me to name it with nothing before the dot.
The ESFE solution was a painless breeze, and I am now a happy listener

Have you ever been listening to your Britney Spears, Daft Punk or Tupac and suddenly you start hearing files that aren't music (i.e ringtones, notification sounds, etc.)? I find it pretty annoying that there is no current method to hide these files from the music player, until now.
I would like to give credit to Scheff's Blend for this idea, and after tinkering with the the doom game folder on my memory card, I found a file called ".nomedia". Within that same folder was over 100 sound files for the game doom, BUT my music player was not reading that specific folder.
I figured it had to do something with that ".nomedia" file, and coincidentally it DID.
Instructions:
1) Download and unzip nomedia.zip somewhere onto your computer
2) Inside is a file called .nomedia, copy it into the directory of media files you want to hide
3) Reboot your phone
P.S. This also works for pictures and video files, BUT for newly taken pictures and videos, or music files added, a REBOOT is REQUIRED to hide them again.

I've been hiding certain pics since I got the phone. You can also just make a new folder with a "." in front of it and it will make the folder hidden.
Example: /sdcard/.data/all your ringtones, naughty pics, etc. here
Yeah, I just make a folder name it to whatever, go into astro and rename the folder to .xxxxx or whatever. Windows wont allow you (at least me) to add a . in front of folder name. But astro will.
Either way it works, but its the period that does the trick.
Even quicker, if you're a terminal kind of a person CD to the directory you want and type:
touch .nomedia
should work
Is there any way to hide it JUST from the gallery? I have tons of folder art with my mp3s that I love having in the music player but would rather not have it shown in the gallery.
You can change a name to:
Naughty.jpg.HIDE
Or name a folder
Naughtypics.hide
My ? is how do you find all the files that are not suppose to be in the Music library to rename them or move them
Most of them are named just numbers. I don't know where they are at.

I would also like to know if there is any answer for this? It is irritating to go into gallery and sort through a couple of hundred pictures of my albums.
Embed the art into the mp3 files themselves so you con remove the JPG art files.
There is only one way I know off to stop this and it means going through your music comprehensively.
You need to edit the music files in iTunes or similar, and assign the album art to the individual music tracks rather than just copying a .jpg to the folder.
If you right click on the music file or files (you can edit more than one track at a time) and then click on 'albumart'.
you then find the file you wish to use and click okay.
EACH track then has an assigned album art picture embedded.
It takes time though, I've done 120Gb of my 300Gb of Music!!
21000 tracks and counting so far.................
Personally, I use TagRunner. Downloads the tags and art automatically (and embeds it).
IMO Weak workarounds.
Pisses me off the Gallery wont let you select specific folders.
I once dled a sign language App only to suddenly have 100+ pics in my gallery.
Id you .hide them...the App wont see them either.

Yes that was discussed. but if the album art is in the same folder as the music, you dont get to listen to the music. And if you put that file in the albumthumbs folder, then the music player wont show it either.
OP is looking to eliminate it from the gallery only.
Are the music files and artwork in the same folder?
If they are you can't do anything about it.
Properly tag the files folks...
Now if the artwork is in another folder you can make a 1 byte file with the name ".nomedia" and place it in the folder.
None of the Media Scan routines will process the folder; this means in the folder images *AND* music will be ignored.
Placing the .nomedia file in whatever folder has the images (music folder or albumthumbs) will most likely prevent the album are from being seen in the music player as well.
I agree that properly tagging the music is really the best way around this. I use mediamonkey for my media management and tagging on my desktop.

I'm doing this, when I rename the file, it vanishes. Is this right? If I try make it again, it says it can't as a file with that name exists, so I guess that's how it should be.
When I go to album, these folders are still there though. Is there a way to make it refresh?

Or connect USB and mount the drives, then dissconnect, scanner will run automatically
reboot phone, kill two birds with one stone, mostly reply in case this helps a future viewer.
Put said videos in a folder starting with . for example...
/sdcard/media/.secret/stuff/
The content in .secret will not be visible in any normal file explorer or file chooser, appear in galleries or media scanners. You will have to use a file explorer that has a "show hidden files" option to see these.
Optionally you may use .nomedia to hide these in a general sense. However not all third party software will honour these tags.

LOL, ack! She's into the "normal" stuff that we watch together, but I also like... well, that doesn't belong here, but anyway I'd like to explicitly state it's nothing illegal...
You could also use "Vaulty Free" app that moves selected images and videos into a virtual vault which then requires a password to open and view. This also ensures that they do not show up in gallery and video player.

so how would this work if you wanted to hide media in game directories? its quite irritating to have the media player list the thousand small wav and mp3 files that are part of games i have on my SD, and renaming the dir to one with a dot in the front will break the path to it.
any suggestions?

Agreed....
I have several .nomedia files in different folder Apps that contain graphics.
Stops them showing up in the Gallery App.
Using a .nomedia file works fine for video game folders but if you add one to a music folder to hide the album art thumbnails from the gallery then this also hides the music files from the music player !

I think you can get around this by embedding the folder art into the music files themselves - I had to do this to my entire collection as my car player would only see them in the MP3s and not as separate files

That's exactly what I do. Mp3tag is a good, free program for doing this.

Try changing the album image's name to albumart.jpg (or watherver file type it is). It is no loger shown in the gallery. Only problem is you can only have 1 image per folder. I have not tried with variantas such as albumart_1 and so on, but it may work...
Thanks, .nomedia worked fine for me, but I think there really should be an option in the OS to either leave the scanner on auto (so it could scan all the phone's storage), or to manually select the folders that contain my media files.

EDIT: I opened-up a ticket here (I took the liberty to include some other ideas I found in this thread).
Not a big compliant, but just wondering if this is fixable. I noticed that upon installation of Android some sound mp3s show up on the Music library. It really clutters up the Music library so I was wondering if there is any way to make it so the music library doesn't detect these specific sound folders/files that way they aren't detected and shown in the library. Anyone have any ideas?

btw I can't really get this to work. I create a txt file named .nomedia on my PC to transfer onto my card. If I try to create this file on my device it says it can't because of the file name. Also, the "." in front of the folder name doesn't really do anything either.

Works perfectly fine for me, I have the blank .nomedia file in each folder I want my media player to ignore and I get none of the android mp3s in my music playlists. Remember Android creates a cache (basically a copy) of all it's notification mp3's in a folder called cache as well.
The problem I have with this is after adding the .nomedia you can no longer select them as ringtones/notifications either.
Anyone else get this?

After days of trying to get a decent solution out of the Sony support guys, I gave up and turned to the only place I know I'll probably find my anwser!
So here's the scenario: I've recently purchased a Z2 (yesterday) and immediately started syncing my music up with the provided application which is Media Go. The unfortunate thing is, that my music refuses to show up in the WALKMAN app. I've looked up some probable solutions on the web such as clearing the data and cache of the WALKMAN app, restarting the phone several times, doing a factory reset, but I ran into a dead end every time. I've also heard that the WALKMAN app cannot recognize music which are in the external storage, but that's not the case here since I dont have an SD card inserted at the moment. I've also read that the app cannot recognize music without proper ID3 tags, but I don't think thats the case here since every music player, even Media Go, can recognize every single mp3 I have on my PC.
Anyone else Xperienced (pun intended) this problem and found a solution?

First thing: The Z2 does recognizes Music in the external storage. From Kitkat and beyond, that's almost the exclusive use for it, without root.
Second: does other players recognizes songs? Download one of the most used, are your choice, and see if they find it.
Third: Seems obvious, but everyone forgers, sometimes, the most obvious stuff. Use a file manager, on the phone (there should be one called File Commander built in), and check the Music folder to see if your media files are there.
Forth: Use the file manager in Windows, and transfer a few music files to the Music folder. Reboot the phone, wait a few minutes (just to make sure), and check if the music is now on Walkman...

The good thing about android is that you can just copy and paste the files onto your phone storage without using a syncing app.
Have you tried copying one of the music files onto your storage straight away into a new folder you create? (the name of the folder doesn't matter at all)
In addition, check the folder with your music files. (The one music go created) Chances are...there is a file in it called '.nomedia'. It's usually a hidden file, so make sure you select 'show hidden files' when you use a file management app. (I recommend Es file Explorer. You can find it on google play store, but others are fine too as long as you get to see hidden files) The file is there to stop media files in the folder from being recognised.
P.S the phone does recognise media files on external storage. That's the whole point of having one really.

First, the music is located in the internal storage. It's in the root/Music folder. The structure looks like /Music/ARTIST/ALBUM/SONGS
Tried what you suggested and strangely , none of the downloaded music players recognize any kind of music on my phone!
Also tried manually copying files (by following the "/Music/ARTIST/ALBUM/SONGS" and by simply copying individual files into the /Music/ folder) but still refuses to recognize my music.
Have you tried creating a NEW folder and put some music files into it?

The other guy pointed some important information. Kudos to him
Try using a more powerful file explorer (the recommended ES File Explorer is a good one. You can try Solid Explorer too, if you like it better) and do a search on the whole storage (remember to activate the Show Hidden files/folders) for .nomedia files.
PS: That isn't the root of the storage, in theory. From a user standpoint, it is, but technically there are a few other folders before you reach the actual root.

Tried creating a folder of my own and putting some music files into it, but nothing sadly, I've checked for a .nomedia file in the /Music/ folder but i dont see anything in there. However, there is a .nomedia file in the root of the internal memory. Maybe that's the root of my problem?

Most likely yes. Delete it and it should work. I wonder why that file was there in the first place...

Wooah wait there...Z2 has always been reading the music from SD card how can you say that it doesnot...?
I dont think the native music player has any problem reading it from the SD card...even though KK 4.4 has restrictions
Also throw the music file anywhere in the phone either internal or external inside any folder it recognises automatically unless the database is corrupt...

My bad...
What version is Walkman? The version that came with my phone wouldn't load up my music either but once I updated it worked as expected.

My Z2 sees all the music, I have the MUSIC folder created on my SD Card.
The only explorer which can do it is File Commander.
Jumping in on this thread....
I use to play my music unlimited through the Walkman, but all of a sudden it seems to have stopped doing so when I try to log back in it doesn't allow me to do so, I click on music unlimited within the Walkman it loads up the screen to login but neither the "login" button or "create account" button will do anything if I click on them they make the tap sound which is registering that they are being clicked but nothing else, the other two links on the page will open ( Learn more and Terms and conditions )
I've tried removing both apps, clearing all the data and reloading everything back on but it's still the same, anyone got any ideas.
Walkman plays my 70gb library on my sdcard1 just fine...
I use Google play music and Walkman does not see my music.

Oh yeah, that's cause Google play music downloads your music to the device and stores it in some cryptic way. I forgot about that.
But, if you put your music on your phone yourself via pc, EVERY music player will be able to see it.

Google music sucks. It will only let you download the music and it's stored in some secret way. I use amazon mp3 at least you can actually put the files on your added card. Shame on Google.
