Discussion regarding speaker/earpiece - Xiaomi Mi MIX Guides, News, & Discussion

The Sharp Aquos Crytal uses what I belive will be a similar 'earpiece' technology,
so reading reviews of that phone my help get an idea of what it'll be like. For example:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opVgMDtBecA
So that's pretty positive.
Is that a speaker grille on the bottom?

the earpiece is where you put your ear and listen to voice during calls and not the lower speaker. the grill at the bottom of the phone where you listen to media or when you want to put your caller on the speaker so it is shared by others etc.
I am doing some search on this part of the Mix as it may be the only issue from stopping me from buying such a beautiful phone.
the remarks in GSMARENA site for those who tried the Sharp device are mixed about the technology used by Sharp which is very similar to Xiaomi's.

for me it is still an issue. All he reviews I have seen on YouTube are not elaborating on the earpiece quality !!

yeah, because there are pretty much two of them and they are done by people with sub 1000 subscribers, even tho it would seem it's basic stuff to review ALL THE PARTS OF THE PHONE
all of the other MIX videos are either rehashes of one another or just quick previews from the reveal event

We need a review of the new changes only; i.e. the new tech of hearing calls and New selfiy camera ? and proximity sensor, that's it the rest is ok

I have no concerns about battery life time since the consumption FHD will be very similar to my current phone mate 8 and the mix battery is larger 4400, only earpiece now puzzles me

I have ordered the Mix, so I can give some feedback when it arrives.
I have also had the Crystal X for close to two years now.
Call quality is great. No problem with loudness, be it in a quiet or noisy place.
And you are supposed to put your ear to the glass. However it's not like as soon as your ear is not touching "it goes silent".
If I have my ear like 10cm away I can still hear fine.

Thank you so much for your input which sounds assuring and will be very eager to hear from you once your phone arrives.

Between 10th nov (yeah right) and the end of the month, so I'm thinking at least three weeks from now.

Great enjoy, and counting on your evaluation

I feel earpiece volume is too low for me.i have cleaned my ears and yes your ear should be the middle of sceen to hear better and exactly touching left side of middle of screen to hear best still i feel local call volume is audible with very much difficulty but when i call india throough voip ,nymgo.call volume is damn good.what can be the reason?

I found quality was fine, just maybe a tad lower than I a traditional speaker. It wasn't like people sounded like talking from a can or anything, it just isn't terribly loud.

Well, I'm one week in, and I must say the loudness in calls is absolutely fine. Sound clarity is a tiny bit better than my Crystal X. Maybe that can be partially chalked up to materials used on the device.
Speaker is great! Not gonna dethrone my M8 (which I also find to be better than my nexus 9 boomsound speakers). I will say it's the best single speaker on a device I've owned so far.

If you're using any case at all, call volume is likely gonna take a hit:
I get a pop-up on occasion, prompting to uncover the earpiece, which with this phone,is the frame.

I go naked, but that sounds like a bummer! Have you tested calls with it both on and off? I expect most people will be using the case all the time.

Yeah, there's a noticeable difference, but,if you turn up the volume, you'll be OK in most situations.

Volume is ok if you're in a quite place. A from or the car.
But anywhere there is civilization like a cafe, the street, a hall, I can't hear a thing.
And my hearing is good.

Can't remember which post but someone mentioned installing Viper4Android, google xda for the thread to boost up volume. You've have to be rooted though.

The Galaxy S6 is MUCH LOUDER than the S5 (VIDEO)

So happy about this! The Galaxy S5 speaker was not very loud at all even at full volume

Man his reaction was priceless hahahhah. The S6 is such a winner
it's already confirmed by samsung that it will be louder, but unless you're semi-deaf, louder isn't better if it still sounds like a tin-can like all the rest of the galaxy phones.. i have always been perfectly fine with the loudness of all the galaxies i've own, S3,4 and 5, i keep my ears pretty clean, would rather have better lows and mid sound than a phone that sounds like a screeching siren.
also the video is rather dumb as the S5 is laying flat on its speaker, so it's obvious which would be louder in that scenario.

My S5 speaker was not as loud as the S4 when I had it. Especially when the phone was flat down.
As for the video, they flipped the phone around towards the end
They said they S6 will have better Bass as well, we will see when it comes out
The iPhone 6 speaker is pretty good, hopefully its like that if not better
hopefully one day samsung will learn a thing or two from HTC with dual stereo speakers and put those damn upper and lower bezels to use rather than bloating it with a bunch of useless sensors...

Atleast this I can agree on
I don't ever listen to music or movies without headphones, so I am happy with no front speakers taking up space.
I do, however, want a louder speaker for hearing the ringer and notifications in noisy areas.
A louder speakerphone than the S5 would be nice too. Even if tinny.

In the end, they turn the s5 around so the speaker is facing up. They comment how that does not really make any difference to the volume level.
And I tried that with my girlfriends s5, as long as it is laying on a hard surface, there is little to no difference in volume level regardless of the speaker facing up or down.

not true. the Z3 is pretty damn loud, sounds great (almost comparable to HTC boom sound) and it's water resistant. again, it just all boils down to samsung using cheap speakers (at least in past devices) can't speak for the S6 yet as i haven't heard it in person.

I did listen to the first two (didn't bother with the third but if you say there is a convincing proof in that clip I will watch it) and the HTC speakers sound fuller and more dynamic, and does not help proving your thesis?
I do have a Z Ultra and waterproofing does have negative impact on speaker quality. I think 3.5mm headphone jack volume suffers slightly, too.
tbh Speaker quality is not at the top of my list in selecting a smartphone, which is why I do not care about Z Ultra's speaker sound. But I do agree that there are situational benefit and that can vary significantly per individual usage pattern.
I know someone who has Z and, when I listened I thought the same, waterproofing has a bad impact on the quality
This sounds reasonable when I imagine that they need to prevent the inside from water and it means to give more limitation on the speaker.

could be dirty ears. funny because if you go in the Z3 forum you'd hardly find anyone complaining about sound.
regardless, the Z3 sounds better than any past samsung phone. any type of effect waterproofing has on sound is minor unless you're some anal audiophile.
Yes, I suppose it'll be fixed with time
I hope the S6 will be loud enough with BT earphones too, the good thing with my M8 is the loud volume output with earphones and BT earphones, I use the HTC stereoclip BT to 3.5mm adapter in my car too, so it's very important for me.
I am pretty much convinced to switch to S6 Edge instead of M9 for the camera and now the sound looks loud enough too :fingers-crossed:

In one of the Samsung Official hands on videos, they show the S6 playing music and a message about an "enhanced amplifier" is also shown. They could have possibly solved the low volume output through the use of this new amplifier and since the S6 should be using a Wolfram DAC, audio output should turn out to be pretty good.

Where's the ear piece

I just realized that there is no traditional earpiece on this phone, unless it is located above the camera. Does it use the same or similar tech as the Xiaomi Mi Mix?
This is why I am trying to wait for an actual real review of the phone before I buy. The quality of the earpiece speaker will determine if I get this phone or not. Calls are hard enough to understand as is, removing the speaker from being a real speaker shooting into your ear will probably make the quality much worse.
It's very hard to see in the few live pictures available, but the larger renders on their homepage show a narrow slit right at the top. Ars Technica also say there is an earpiece in there. So I do not think they are following the Mi Mix in that experiment.

That small slit at the top has to be the earpiece speaker. The one in the pic of the Essential phone reminds me of the one on the Sony Z5 Premium Dual I have which works great.
Unbox therapy review shows it clearly. Great piece of hardware.

Generic problem with the loudspeaker?

Hello, I have come to tell you one thing to see if it happens to any of you, I am very disappointed.
The cell phone is NEW has 2 days.
The loudspeaker to have the volume at the top is sometimes heard as saturated speaker, as if you almost cover, that vibration ... for example with the Skyline tone, it is like you do not finish listening to clean, bring the phone to the ear about 20 cm and put it to the top to see if the same thing happens to you, it's like it does not end up being clean and you hear a slight vibration ...
Now comes the curious .... I have tried 1 galaxy 8 from a friend does the same, 2 note 8 and 2 galaxy 8 from different stores and also do the same ... And for example in a S7 of a friend the same tone sounds totally clean, without that slight saturation or vibration or I do not know how to define it, it is similar to as if you covered the speaker and it is felt as a vibration ...
I do not know if it will be for the protection of the water that is like a mayita and half it covers and it sounds like that or that the 6 devices that I have tried were defective ...
Hey. Yeah, the sound is muddy, like it's coming from the sewers ? I was really dissapointed too, and I wonder why this wasn't mentioned in ANY review. Oh okay, I know why - money. Or people are just deff ? S7 had great speakers. LGV10, my previous phone, had this warm, clean sound too.
S8 speakers are the weakest part of the phone. I'm happy though that earphones sounds great!

Does the sound also have a slight vibration as if the loudspeaker were blocked?
With the melody Sparkle it shows a lot in the first second...
It's the waterproofing. No way around that, really...

And because a galaxy s7 does not do it if it is also water resistant?
Is a vibration heard as if you were covering the speaker ... is it because the protection grid and the power of the speaker make that vibration?
I'm so happy though that earphones sounds I think this great sound, but may be S8 has low quality speaker but for me great.

Let's talk about the build quality.

Why does the back glass vibrate and resonate in my hand when anything that is played at 50% or so is played?
Seems like Samsung forgot to add some dynomat. [emoji23]

Because it has best speaker from most phones in market, sound == vibrations.
And if we gona talk about build quality i also must say its one of best built phones i ever saw.
Only wish their software was a bit better..hardware is phenomenal.

The phone got the best speaker on earth. It reminds of these Puerto ricans with multiple color fender, doors and bumpers on their 1990 honda civic, but they got a nice sound system. The trunk would rattle like it's nobody's business

Perhaps we need to attach some sound deadening to the back of our phones lol.
I just find it hard to believe that when Samsung designed this phone and put the speakers on to test, they accepted the back resonating like this. Putting on my Steve Jobs hat.. what is this garbage! Haha

I don't notice the vibration much. I use a case and it's ceramic. Doesn't vibrate as much as my pixel 3. That's the king of vibration. Doesn't bother me though.

Why does the N20U only have 2 Microphones?

All flagships have 3 microphones .... top, bottom and camera bump.
The microphone on the camera bump is missing on the Note 20 Ultra? Why? .. only have 2 microhones.
Even the Note 20 has 3 microphones.
Ultra has three as well..
hmm .. thanks .. that's weird .. on the side of the bump? ... I looked in the shop and didn't see the pin-hole on the side .. let me look again for photos.
can you see it?

Nice Thanks
I don't think the engineers at Samsung thought this through. The placement of the mic will get covered by cases. So makes the mic useless.

Haven't taken or called yet with them in. But since the phones camera uses the live buds for superior sound pickup, I would think sound from them writings be the optimum option.
I'll comment again once I use them for a call or two.
