You have been to the quadrooter thread. Jcase already said it works. Will he ever release an exploit? Probably not.

I see on the news feed that @jcase released a root for the pixel. So he does release exploits. I'm still gonna hope that he will be a hero for this phone and release an exploit to at least gain root if nothing else.

Other people you know can spend the time/money to do it, it doesn't always have to fall in my lap. LOTS of sample code for this out there
Root alone wont do much for locked variants of this phone, as ive said.

No, I understand where he is coming from. I would start to get annoyed as well if I were in his shoes. Like I said I'm new to this Moto thing and still trying to figure the whos who. And I've seen his name mentioned ALOT not only in the feeds here but in the news articles on the loading page of labs. I am working on trying to get a Linux machine, but will probably be after the holidays. I know a little about coding and am looking into learning more of the Linux coding after I get a machine running it. I am in no way as fluent as jcase is, and from what I have read I respect his knowledge on all this. I now know and understand who he is a little better and won't bring him up, unless he is willing to help in some way answering questions and the like. I would also donate, although not much, for him to get a 12 pack and a pack of smokes. I Don't make too much money.

Yes I have seen a lot of those codes in my research on other sites. Issue is all require a Linux machine. I have Windows machine. And don't have the money to just up and go get one. But will have the funds after the holidays.

Actually you dont need a linux machine, you can cross compile (which you would be doing on a linux machine anyhow since you are compiling for arm). I use OSX for most development, I only use linux if i need to use libusb (for the life of me I cant get it working on osx).
While I have a linux box in my server closet, I don't use it for development. I actually use a raspberry pi if I need a linux box (so i dont have to walk to the server closet if i need to plug something in). These run $5-$35.
Pi3 - $35 - https://www.amazon.com/Raspberry-Pi-RASP-PI-3-Model-Motherboard/dp/B01CD5VC92
Pi Zero is like $5 if you can find someone not price gouging them. Check MicroCenter.

Here are some resources, I have posted my training material for free, but some of hte books I recommend can be pricey, some are dirt cheap

Thread cleaned.
If you aren't here to help the OP, then move along. Slinging mud at another member, for any reason, is not constructive or acceptable.
Thinking anyone owes you anything on xda is the wrong way to think here. Everyone is here voluntarily and are NOT paid by anyone.

Will read through what you have there this evening, depending on when I get home.
Also seen some articles about running Linux beta on a VM in a Windows 10 environment. Would that also work? Just saw some articles about it, still looking into that as well. Or the raspberry pi 3, that you mentioned, with the preloaded noob sd card? Which is WAY cheaper then the original route I was looking. Thanks again for that suggestion.

VM should work, however be warned usb stuff can be funky, if you plan to ever work with usb i suggest getting a real linux box (even just a pi).
Yes i bought a pie with preloaded os on sdcard, no big deal since I only bought it to use libusb. I mount it over network to my osx box, and ssh in. (did i mention libusb is horrible on osx?)

Yep. Microsoft's 360 console was supposed to be unhackable as well. It didn't take long
we have found a way to hack any and all electronics in existance, the phone is rootable it might just need a newer mind to take a look. people get into their heads that things can only be done a certain way, there is always another way to do it. to name a few
ALL HTC PHONES
Sony PSP
PS3
Xbox 360
iPhone
mac computers
linux computers
windows computers
i don't think i need to go on, everything is hackable and can be messed with, sometimes it just takes a little more work and a different approach.

Or it could be that some people have that common knowledge? I knew it from buying a safe.
In any case, it really makes me wonder why phone companies bother with lock downs. Sure, some of the general public won't bother trying, but how much money is invested in locking us from root and then lost when a 16 year old kid cracks it?

Microshaft doesn't exactly have a strong track record when it comes to security....
Unlike Linux, which Android *IS*.
That being said, rooting ANY Android device is *easy*. Just not necessarily through the conventional back doors.
If you can read and write the chips, you can very easily make any modifications you like into the root filesystem, which can include adding an 'su' command. Only problem with this is that it generally requires a hardware approach, which is beyond the scope of the average user... who probably shouldn't be messing with root anyways.
I do, however, feel a bit of a letdown in this issue though. The unfortunate thing is that the carriers still are trying to call the shots (and generally succeeding due to popular ignorance). I would like to see this change -- there was once a time when you bought your land phone from the phone company and this is not so any more. Right now, most people are still buying their mobile phone from the phone company, even though it isn't necessary. I would definitely like to see more dealers for non-carrier-specific cell phones, and to have them show up in popular places. I would like to see these sold at places like walmart and radio shack so that you can just walk in and buy a phone with no strings attached.
There are a few reasons why I opted for an ADP1...
1) no contract,
2) no controls,
3) no carrier,
I bought it outright, its mine, and I can do what I like with it. People who are interested in the freedom of an unrestricted device should opt for this approach. ADP1 is STILL AVAILABLE, and there is not much about the new devices that improves on it.. sure I admit that having a little more ram would be nice, but the keyboard sure makes up for it. Yes, the majority of devices can be converted into an unrestricted device, but it just isn't right that you would have to hack it.

well at the last hacker convention windows vista was not hacked until many third-party apps were involved, linux was hacked long before that. i'm not saying that linux is unsecure because it is very secure in the since that you can't do much if you hack my computer. any real threat would have to have the root password and to get that you would need a keylogger

Dude, vista was hacked before it was even released.
And fyi; hacked = got root. Guessing at some user's password doesn't count. Hacking some particular server (i.e. Apache) doesn't count since it is run jailed (unless the admin is an idiot) and therefore won't let you get root. There have been a VERY FEW true root compromises for Linux, each and every one has been patched within hours (if not minutes) of it being identified, and due to the differing culture around linux, it is a matter of extreme pride to publicly identify security issues, i.e. if you legitimately hack linux, you are most likely going to take full credit for it using your REAL NAME and probably even provide a patch at the same time. Hack windoze though and you release under a fake name using a secure proxy in russia or china, otherwise MS will sue your a$$ until you die of starvation either through judgement or through legal expenses.
In Linux, you are a hero for identifying a security hole and helping to bring the whole thing closer to perfection.
In windoze, you are a criminal for pointing out the ineptitude of MS.

Why don't you just start from scratch... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843221
Honestly I don't have time to start from scratch and i don't understand any of this mess. I work 2 jobs and hacking or modding is not my forte. You want me to rebuild a motor and I can do it blind folded but this is your world and not mine and I'm experienced enough to know that.
You bought a phone that is modded and you call it a piece of crap. Do a hard reset and use the stock ROM if you don't want to mod it.
If you bought a computer that had the wrong OS would you call it a piece crap too? Don't blame the phone blame the mod that the person you bought it from.
NO mensa candidate with an obvious lack of reading comprehension. I'm upset with the situation of not being able to delete the guys info off the phone. Master of the Obvious
This is a problem I see often with people who want to do Technology savvy stuff without the disciplines and background in Technology whatever it is?
(At the very least make the Effort to know the Basics)
That is why Apple products exist for? I always hear Mac people insult Windows products! and its always for the same reason? "Severe Ignorance of Technology!"
That is why Grandmothers can use Macs!
"Distinctions without Differences is Master of the Obvious"
The only real advice I can give you is...
Stop Whining and "Man-Up" to the task at hand! Relax and use your brain for which it was intended for? "Reasoning" you are very fortunate to have found XDA, but "most" of the people here are for the advancement and self-Teaching of Technology! You are not going to find more Intelligent Tech Savvy people than on XDA!
Now for the Master of the Obvious things?
make sure that you have described the problem with enough detail for someone to help you! and hopefully you previously have taken the time and effort to do a "Search" on your problem! but if you are like many I see here and want everyone to hold your hand for something you are too slothy to do yourself? Then hope that someone here is Altruistic enough to help you? Remember you have spent more energy whining about the problem than....
Back up everything using either MS MyPhone or SPB Backup?
and then you can reinstall the HD2 with what you want on it?
Good Luck

[Q] Hpw to get into the android development business

So I've been a big fan of Android phones since their first release. I never bought into the IOS hype. I'd like to get into that kind of thing. So how does someone get into such business? College courses or do you have to find a company and work your way up?
BTW FAIL on the thread title... noticed it after I posted it -__-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1628565 hope you do well.
I saw that and I've been studying, reading many guides and such, but I was wondering how to get into the actual business because I know all of the devs here do it out of their free time. I was wondering how to actually be behind the making of the next big thing in smartphones. I know it can't certaintly be by working at T-Mobile by just selling phones (Which btw I applied and I'm hoping for a call back lol) So yeah... any insight?
i know that high school and college students have a chance to work at Intel as an intern over the summer... i'm trying to see if i can get in hehe

So I've been a big fan of Android phones since their first release. I never bought into the IOS hype. I'd like to get into that kind of thing. So how does someone get into such business? College courses or do you have to find a company and work your way up?

I think that in order for you to actually get recognized and make android (or whatever smartphone os) a career for you, you will need some kind of college education, like most careers today. As for what you'd major in and etc., I'm not exactly sure, but my college offers a mobile applications class and etc. under computer science and I'm thinking about trying to get into it,.but it also seems like a waste of time for the fact all of this can be learned w/o taking courses b/c of all the tutorials and programs available today and you can teach yourself. So I'm not sure what to do, but its something I'm interested in as well so I may ask about it in the computer science department whenever I get the chance to...
As for working at T-Mobile...that job is a joke unless you live in a major city or something.
To my experience, the employees at T-Mobile don't know how to do anything other than operate a phone, tell you its selling points and process the order and contracts or w/e.
You don't have to know **** about phones and can still work there.
For ex: I live right outside of Nashville, there's quite a few places where you can get T-Mobile, like in the mall there's about 3 kiosks for T-Mobile and there's a T-Mobile store right across from the mall. I talked to the guys at the kiosks all the time cause I used to work at Hollister and A&F, and they don't know much about phones at all. I worked in the front of the stores as a greeter and they'd have a kiosk right in front of my store, so I'd walk straight from the store to their kiosk and talk about phones with them and they'd be like "why do you work at those stores and know so much about phones?" It wasn't so much that I knew a lot about phones, it was what I assumed to be basic knowledge for anyone that is surrounded by and works with phones all day.
And another example, there's a T-Mobile store right by my campus, but this isn't really a major city, so this is like the only one unless you'd travel a almost an hour to the next store.
Anyways they offered me a job b/c some guy came in w/ an iPhone 4 but didn't know what to do to get it on T-Mobile. I overheard the conversation and asked the guy about it and then told him exactly what he should do (like jailbreak and etc.) cause the store didn't know what to do, and not only that, they called "THE" guy that they normally talk to about iPhones and he didn't even know what to do...so I was like look, I used to have an iPhone on T-Mobile, this is what you need to do, etc. etc., and then they offered me a job. I told them I'm not interested ATM b/c my grades are sucking ass in college right now (I'm a freshman) and I wanted to get my grades up.
So I come back about a month and a half later and they have a new employee there - she doesn't know **** about cell phones either! But its not like the others know much more than she does.
Moral of those two stories: you don't have to know much about cell phones to work for a carrier's store. Not saying EVERY employee is like that, but to my experience, they are. Just like best buy employees
Its sad I can tell someone that works w/ TV's there more about a TV than that employee can, yet he's getting paid for the little knowledge he knows -___-
I don't even keep up w/ TV tech...

Haha, yea. I'm trying to take the course w/ the mobile app development and stuff but I didn't think I wanted to do a computer science major, so I took the "dumbed down" intro course which is only half the prerequisite, so next semester, I'm taking the other half needed for me to get into the mobile app course. It should be fairly easy cause this other half I need is only half a semester and they kinda dumbed it down too, and most of it's online and I can do the assignments at my own pace. All i'm doing is programming that little lego robot kids used to play with, at least that's what the guy made it seem like. He said it's supposed to give you a general idea on how to "speak computer language", knowing that computers will only do what you tell it to do or something like that...
My memory is so effed up right now, lol.
Lol that sounds confusing and stressful. But that's what it takes to work for android I guess lol I'm up for it though

How to be "in business".. Are you sure you want it?
There are several things you might want to do:
1) Write apps for Android (and iOS too). Don't need any formal education for that, just know programming well (Java for Android, System C for iOS).
2) Develop HW or SW for the phones. For that you need to be either HW or SW engineer. That means - going to a recognized university and getting at least Bachelor of Engineering (which is a sort of BSc) degree in either Electronic Engineering or Software Engineering, then get a job in one of the corporations in this field.
And I suggest not basing such important decisions in life as choosing your profession, on a suggestion from a forum.

Risky flash process is off-putting. I expect we'll see much more activity once it is possible to flash a recovery with less risk of ending up with a hundred dollar paperweight. Plus the OUYA people promised an open console and many people have been disgusted enough to have avoided the console altogether due to the horror that customer relations have proven to be.

There's also (understandably) more interest in phones and tablets that already have momentum. I won't touch my OUYA until I go back to school where I have an HDTV that won't give me a headache, so that's why I'm basically tuned out here. That, and all the people raging in this forum.

I am definitely pissed about certain things that could have been handled alot better (Like right now I'm forcing myself to not go into examples). But I think we need to move on. I don't think any device has ever really had a lot of things going on when you first get them. Really if I would have read some of this stuff before hand I would have still got it but the average person might not and there could be a bad ass developer right now weighing out whether or not he should get this thing and it's not looking good. Nope. Not going to happen. The OUYA was billed as an open console and what has been delivered to us paying customers has been anything but open. I will not be quiet, I will not get over it, nor will I go away.
If the OUYA fails it will be because of bitterness by early adopters like myself who discovered we had been sold a bill of goods and are educating everyone else we know on what a horrible deal the OUYA is as a result.

This one could have. It was going to be different--"So begins the revolution", remember? If the OUYA team had actually delivered something open they could have had an instant community of developers and users springing up around the device--instead people are getting increasingly vocal about bugs, the lack of transparency and a lack of a true open console. These people are not going to go away.
At the current rate things are going I highly doubt the OUYA will see its third hardware revision. There might be a poorly sold second edition but there will be no third version because the poor sales of the second release will kill the company. If it happens it will be their own fault for not fulfilling their promises to their customers.

Let me make it easy for any developers looking in. I have already bought three OUYA games and have been adding several others to a mental list of games I'd like to purchase in the near future, but I absolutely refuse to buy any more games until the OUYA team fixes the USB storage bugs. I will not buy a single game from this time forward until things change.

I loved my Ouya at first, rooted , cmw, emulators, side loading. But overscan killed me to death. I don't want to use this on my 42 inch I want It on my 32 inch Samsung gaming tv. lets face it the nexus 7 delivers what ouya can't, hdmi out open source and the ability to take it on the go as a fabulous tablet to. but it's double the price. I returned mine and if ouya doesn't get it's stuff in order this thing will be a dud.I have Roku, Chromecast, 2 Nexus 7's and every current gen console. we have steambox on the way, Xbox one, Ps4 and more coming. Ouya is going to be eaten alive if it doesn't open up the pandoras box and let the fun out.

Kingroot

Root app that claims to root all android devices. I'll save you the trouble of trying, cause it does not work on the Fire TV. There are videos of devices being rooted that were unrootable before, but for some reason it does not work on the Fire TV, but it does work on Fire phone and Amazon tablets. Hopefully in the future it will work on the Fire TV.
I read the apk is not safe. Rumors about the root app which connects to chinese server and sends private data (but it could be just not true). Can anyone confirm?
Regards
I think the app is safe. Everyone always thinks devs are tryin to hack peoples devices and it never happens, so I doubt this app is any different. Also if people are worried then they probably shouldn't keep persnal info on their devices. If anyone hacked aany device I own they would get nothing. I never use my SS number, i never leave active cards on my Amazon account, so if my device gets hacked ther hacker is wasting his time. Maaybe they can hack my email or Facebook, but all they'll get from them is spam. I only use Facebook to connect wwith apps, and my email accounts are atleast ten years old and not one person I know has my email adresses, cause I only use them to be ble to signup for other website accounts. All of my imprtant info is stored in the cloud that I call my brain, and no hacker can get to it.
Didn't try it, but reddit is reporting it doesn't work.
Edit: Looks like someone got it to work after a factory reset.
Also, it is naive to trust running something where they don't release the source. Your device, do what you want though.
They didn't release the source for the same reason other devs sometimes don't, cause they do not want google to know how they are rooting devices. Whatever exploit(s) they are using would become useless if they releassed the source. I already posted that it does not work on the Fire TV, but it does work on a lot of other devices. I simply made this thread because people were gonna hear about Kingroot and try it so I figured I would save them some time. Also, it may work on the Fire TV in the future.

I don't want to argue that credible devs release their source. But whatever, it is a leap of faith. There is rarely harm done. But best to be cautious.
And sorry for the optimism. The successful root was on the Fire PHONE. You are correct, still no luck on the stick or TV. It will come eventually for those waiting.
Let's suppose it does do something naughty. Root, install Clockwork, then overwrite the whole firmware with a pre-rooted one. Problem solved.
can anyone confirm if this works after a factory reset.. we should act on this soon before the hole is closed.

triple-lol. as if google is not extremely aware of open defects internally and/or on CVE / MITRE. huh I guess I kinda-sorta did know how to.
google fixes its **** near-immediately. the reason $RANDOM_DEVICE is rootable is because the actual-downstream-vendor is too lazy/cheap to push updated binaries.

Does efuse factor in at all regarding future root methods? Or is it pretty much void now that we can unlock bootloader? That was a huge deal months ago, and now I hear lots of talk about new root exploits without anyone commenting on efuse.

The person actually said it worked on the Fire Phone after resetting, not the Fire TV, but if you are willing to reset your Fire TV, try it and let us know if it works.
I am trying out the app now. I used the air mouse app in the app store to navigate. The app was designed for a touch screen. I am trying on my fire stick first. Will report back.

Yes Google is aware just like Apple is aware of exploits, but have you ever read the devs working on IOS jailbreaks? They openly state that they have jailbreaks for new firmware and even post videos of them jailbreaking it, but refuse to release jailbreaks until after dev builds are over and the actual firmware is out because they do not want Apple to fix the exploit they have used. Its basically the same wiith Android, but the only difference is there are no dev builds from google. The app is safe. Tell me the last time you installed something that ruined your credit, stole your identity or personal info. I am guessing it has never happened to you, just like it wouldn't if you installed Kingroot. If not releasing the source means they are not legit then that must mean 99% of developers are not legit. I do not have the source for Angry Birds, but that would not stop me from installing it if I chose to. People are too paranoid about being hacked. Really think about it, what is someone even gonna get if they hack your device?? And wouldn't it be your fault if they got any of your personal info in the first place? They have been telling people for around 20 years not to put personal info on their computers so if people are dumb enough to do it then its kind of their own fault. People know better than to smoke too, but they still do it. Long story short, even if someone was gonna go to the trouble of hacking someones phone, they would go for someone that actually has something they want, like someone famous. Its like when people say they have haters, when nobody really hates them. Who is gonna waste time hting someone that flips burgers, when there are better people to hate on? Nobody wants to hack our phones, trust me.
I tried it just now with KingRoot versions 3.4.1.157 and 4.0.0.233 on my german FTVS with blocked updates. Both times there is the sad looking Android head (and the number 13804 in the second version).
I had the same result. no go.

Did you do a reset first? It apparently works for some devices only if they are reset. Some people said it worked on the Fire Phone without resetting, but others are saying they had to reset before it would work. I would do it, but I do not feel like resetting my device. Maybe someone will do reset and try it on The Fire TV and the stick and report back so we will know if it works. I predict it won't work, but if someone is willing to try on the box and the stick after resetting, that would be great.

Not misinformed at all. Talk to any financial expert or online securities expert and they would laugh in your face if you told them you stored personal information on an electronic device. The best place to store information is in your brain. You know your ss number so why put it in your device? You have a credit card or debit card so why put it on you device when its in your pocket? People get viruses on their computers, but most of the time those are meant to cause havoc, not to steal your info. When hackers want to take stuff they try taking it from systems like department stores and banking systems, not people with $100 in the bank. Maybe you should get informed about who online hackers are stealing from, cause in most cases they are not trying to steal directly from everyday people. If the common persons info gets stolen its usually stolen from somewhere else, like a bank or department stores online system, and not from your devices.

I agree. Can we keep this post on topic. Namely Kingroot. I'm not really interested in your long winded post either. I don't want to discourage devs from looking into a potential root because the thread turns into a pissing contest. That appears to be what happened with the thread about CM12 on the fire tv.
Thanks
