[Q] Gaming performance - Sony Xperia X Compact Questions & Answers

hey guys
I was planing to buy this phone so I have a question from those who are already using it
how is the gaming performance on this phone in comparison with Xperia z5 compact?!
---
I mean, I know there is huge difference between adreno 430 and 510 which is midrange but how is it in real life gaming!
if anyone have tested some games like asphalt 8 or dead trigger 2 please review here
btw I just want to know the performance because this screen size is not for gaming anyway...
thank you

Adreno 510 is better than the 430..dont see only gigaflops,...the snapdragon 810 is hot and throttling..a lot

430 got double faster but it will throttling down bcoz of hot at the end the speed would be about the same.

so it means 510 aint that good it's just that 430 becomes the same after some minutes, so whats the conclusion? does Xperia X compact perform good in real life gaming or not?
and by good I mean no lag on high quality!

Overall XC must be faster with 3GB ram. I'm stick with Z5c bcoz I want more developments.

@op the xperia xc will play the titles you mentioned, it will play all new games fine including real racing 3. and it will do it very energy efficient too ie. less battery use and more play. =) the cpu cores cortex A72 over A57 (although there are only 2xA72+4xA53 they are on par with 4xA57+4x53) are also a step up since they again are much more efficient per energy used which is a factor many forgets, it might score the same benchmark but if the cpu/gpu only uses half the energy its a big improvement in my eyes. the 5xx is also the first chipset to officially support Vulcan (next opengl) although the 430 in theory should be able to support it too. I own both phones, love the z5c but the XC is imho a step up and better phone overall. everything; if it is games or everyday use is just more fluent which probably is contributed by the extra GB ram and the added efficiency and scaling of the SoC. the camera, and fingerprint reader are insanely fast too.
edit: you can see some game performance in this review, he also talks abit about it, which is the same as my experience; the game might load a little slower but once loaded it runs great.

Thinking of getting one

Have an evo but I'm getting a Verizon dealer line. Is it worth it I'm a big gamer and will be getting an evo 3d to replace my evo. However I'm worried that the lack of good hardware will make the phone obsolete pretty quick..... thinking of getting a Droid x2 just for the tegra..... but not sure what advantages it would have. I'm also kind of worried about Sony portinhg enough stuff over to make it worth it.
Tho being able to run Rome on the built in emulator would be Perth awesome.
If I'm a huge gamer is it worth it. I really just want opinions on the device so any comments would be great.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to have two phones and figure the evo 3d would be pretty cool for some stuff. Hopefully I can use it to tether.... if not ill just use the play.
How well do the touchpads work?

I agree. This thing is Awesome and I'm so glad I moved from my iPhone to the X Play. Playing the old PSX games as well as the new games like the Spiderman is a lot better with the buttons.

I dont think the hardware will be obsolete quick. With the controls alone you can play thousands of roms on emulators. Even if sony laggs on releases. FPSE works fine.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc vs LG Optimus 2x "Face Off". With the play and the arc being similiar id say its probably not to far off. The processor obviously would kick the plays arse. But at the moment dual core is not needed, only a few apps and games are tailored for it. What the point of all that power with nothing to use it.
Trust me the processor in the xperia play is amazing. It is currently the fastest single core CPU on android. Also the Xperia play has a GPU much more powerful than the one in tegra devices. Its even faster than the ipad2 GPU.
Hardware wise it is pretty advanced.

I totally agree with this. Just because it doesn't do well in benchmarks doesn't mean it's not faster in real world applications. My DroidX will smoke the Play in Quadrant. But if I were to do a side-by-side comparison on Dungeon Defenders, or load times, the Play will destroy it.
So for current processors, the Play has a very nice one indeed. Tegra is over-hyped in my book.

What?! how is the Adreno 205 (single core) more powerful than a dual/quad core Tegra 2? its no where near and as for being more powerful than the gpu in the ipad 2, not a chance lol.
I love my Play but let's not get carried away with false claims
It can hold it's own against the rest of the mid range phones (iphone 4, galaxy s, desire hd etc) at the moment but it isn't in the same league hardware wise compared to the high end devices appearing now.
And yup, the cpu is one of the best single cores around but that's not saying much when the rest of the competition have moved on to dual core cpu's (and quad core by the end of the year) now....

Yeah but its all about optimization.
Lets look at my PC vs a PS2 for example.
PS2 Specs: 32mb RAM, CPU 300mhz EE, GPU GS 4mb
My PC: 12gb Trichannel RAM, CPU i7 4 cores, 2 threads each @ 2.7ghz, GPU ATi 5870 1gb GDDR5
^My PC spanks the HELL out of those specs, but guess what? Through emulation my PC can not even play all games smoothly.
The Xperia Play hardware and the chip sets mentioned above have a MUCH less difference.
Meaning...
Any games and software designed around the Xperia Play will look vastly superior and play vastly superior on the Play vs those other chip sets, and believe me being the only phone on the market that is ALSO a dedicated gaming platform means that the system will see games that are much much better than those other chip sets. The Play basically owns the gaming market by default right now, the support is going to be insane.
Im wanting one to i hope i can afford it

Tegra is nothing special you know, it's total clock speed is only 1ghz just like ours, just because is dual core dosent make it super amazing. and as have been proven by chainfire, the GPU is not much better than ours. anyway imo the play is not a mid range device, it is quite easy in the high end category

You can say that about any device though, if a game is made for the samsung galaxy s 2 and is optimized for that devices hardware (the better cpu/gpu and ram) it would wipe the floor with the play version, same as ipad 2, atrix, lg optimus 2 etc.
And yes, the play has the gaming pad which hopefully will expand the life a bit of the device and mean we do get some decent support (I hope) but obviously it depends how the Play sells (not sounding great at the moment tbh)

The play is NOT a high end device lol, it sits slap bang in the mid range hardware wise, check all the review sites, all of them class this device as a mid range device,
CNET UK:
All indications seem to be that the Play is a good mid-range smartphone. Whether you should choose it over any other phone will hinge entirely on how often you think you will want to play games on it.

Single core 1ghz cpu (classed as mid range), adreno 205 gpu (while good still classed as mid range), ram is 512mb but has 378mb usable (classed as mid range, the desire s and desire hd even beat it with 768mb of ram), internal storage is 400mb (mid range), the screen is standard lcd (and not S-LCD or AMOLED etc) so is also mid range,
I knew the Xperia Play was a mid range device before I bought it, I have no issues about that, but it does make me laugh when people try and say it is high end when its nowhere near, check the reviews, check the specs, check the benchmarks, they ALL scream mid range!
And yes, the Play can play the recent Tegra 2 games using chainfire but remember those games are 1st generation Tegra 2 games, give it a few months and none of the Tegra 2 games will work on the Adreno 205 gpu, and theres games on tegra 2 already that won't even run on the Play due to the inferior gpu and ram on the Play (monster madness and bang bang racing for example) even with chainfire.
The X-Play is great the controls feel great minus the analogs they get a bit getting used to, at first I thought they were just broken. I had been having a few problems with the power button getting stuck when pressed but I just used a razor blade to shave the sides of the cover and it works just fine. The auto bright feature is just annoying due to it constantly changing hope an update will allow to turn off auto bright. Gaming on it is enjoyable especially at work when nothing is going on. Battery life last me about 6 hours of gaming it could be better but once r800x model can be rooted to uninstall verizon's bloatware and auto bright disabled battery life just be greatly extended.

Galaxy S 2 and FPSE (9th June)

hey all
i thought id share with you for those who would be interested in my first hands on experience with the samsung galaxy s2
well i went round my friends house after work, as he was waiting for one to be delivered as an upgrade, anyway he rang me to say that it was here,
so i thought id go up and have alook.
the first thing i did when he gave it me was.... drop it lol
he passed it me and it slipped right through my fingers it was so thin
it bounced on his hard laminated floor a few times but he just laughed.
it is a nice device, very slim altho abit wider than the play
the brightness on the screen was great
and it was very very snappy scrolling across homescreens and loading up apps,
exploring the memory with astro. i was impressed
and alot lighter than the play aswell
the quadrant scores were off the chart getting something like 3k+
linpack he was getting 48
i did notice that when running quadrant some of the textures were just plain solid shapes no actual textures. i thought maybe thats got something to do with that mali chipset that i heard didnt support certain texture compression but anyway.
i told him to fire up fpse to see what that ran like with the new fpse.
mines runs great hovering around at around 45-50fps
on most games. until i put on screen filtering
and that has a massive impact on fps it drops to around
27-30fps and games become unplayable even with frame skip on max
enhanced 3d rendering has little effect on fps so i keep that on
anyway i thought that the galaxy s 2 with the 1.2 dualcore and the mali 400mp
would power along when putting screen filtering on.
so i tried tekken 3 loaded it up. ran it but without screen filtering on
and it was buttery smooth stuck at 60fps.
then i turned on screen filtering and it dropped to 30/35fps
and was the same unplayable state mine was.
i was gob smacked surely a dualcore would best this???
my mate said, so looks like your not missing much gaming wise then compared to mine. i just smiled ,he hasnt got his for gaming mind.
i dont know if there was summat goin on, or a imcompatability with fpse
but it was an interesting discovery. i tried afew other games and they all were the same.
so as far as emulation and fpse goes were not getting left behind because we have no dualcore cpu.
Someone please correct me here if im wrong but what your saying is that a dual core cpu is the same speed as a single core cpu on single core programming, well yes that is going to be the obvous result, yes different single core speeds will have various results.
But unless a program has been coded for use with more than one processor then it will not make use of a dual core processor.
for example
a single core processor can work out
x = 5
y = ?
x * y = 15
this equation would take as much time on a single core processor as it would a dual core processor as you are waiting for the result of 15/x to work out what y is.
so until FPSE is programmed to allocate for dual core processors you will end up with the same speed of use, or very similar.
I have both, well sort off, play dead gone for repairing with sony, so bought S2 in the mean time, to tell you, S2 with 1gb RAM and Dual core Processor which can be overclocked to stable 1.66 ghz is way fast as compared to play, trust me, graphic wise both have 16m colors, but s2 with super amoled does it somehow better...i miss playing games the play way...thats all...I guess S2 is the world's fastest stable phone for now.....atleast I have both so know it...

The tegra2 bests that GPU in every possible way.
Also doesn't the SGS II have an FPS limit.
Also Exynos as a whole is not all that more powerful than tegra2 I mean the reason the SGS II does so well on benchmarks is because of android 2.3 look at the Atrix 2.3 leak its benchmarks are off the charts as well.
And my last point. There is no need for all this power if it is not going to be used. I mean games need that type of power and games are best played with a gamepad. Why sony ericsson didn't put a tegra in the play is beyond me.
I tried tekken on it, could see puches coming at me my thumbb was always in the way. I told the owner to uninstall as gaming on something like that was a joke. He didnt agree until he tried my play.

Touchscreens suck for gaming.
No amount of processing power in the World will overcome this fact.

I played with the Arc today and...

First off, I don't want any fanboy reactions from SGS2 users or what kind of other phone. I'm just wondering why we don't have got it?
Today I played with the Arc of my nephew. And what must I say? We updated to the newest firmware before starting.
I must say that our x10 has received a very very very crappy 2.3.3 update. The Arc has ALMOST NO lags. Everything runs smoother then on our x10. They both got 1Ghz processor, how did this happen?
Also battery life is MUCH better. x10 was on lowest brightness, Arc FULL brightness both connected with wifi. X10 had a simcard, and the Arc not. But damn? Our x10 lost so many % battery in constant use while the Arc just lost 1%!!! X10 has even custom rom...
Both phones similair processor, only newer generation on Arc. Both running same clockspeed. How the heck can our x10 then perform much and much worse?
Just a few things I'm wondering, and NO I'm not going to buy a Arc. I got better things to buy
By chance any developer then can fully uncap all FPS to 60 FPS on our x10. Including 3D. I'm not expecting 3D games to run 60FPs but atleast that they will be able to reach the max FPS our GPU can handle if uncapped... The only thing we've got uncapped is 2D graphics, nothing more... And 2D graphics on Arc are still smoother...
Who will be able to make us x10 perform better? Is it kernel related? Arc has newer kernel?
I know thread is a bit messy, but how the heck can a phone with almost similair hardware (just newer generation processor and some new things) perform so much much much better? You can't make me believe that the processor in the Arc is 100% faster... Both same clockspeed just some little improvements for energy and stronger GPU, and the UI has no heavy graphics... Arc = butter smooth in scrolling and all UI related stuff.
I believe SE is capping more then only the FPS?
Did you know that the Are processor higher than X10, RAM is higher than X10 and GPU performance is higher than X10? What are you talking about? Compare a new phone appears almost 2 years later with the first Android phone from SE?
EDIT: I'm scared of this one

Better processor would also mean better gpu...
It is the processor completely. Try any phone with that gen, its the same reason those phones can overclock to 1.8 ghz comfortably
Hey guys...
My Dell with a 2.4 ghz Pentium IV running win7 runs like crap compared to my Dell with a 2.4 ghz intel core and nvidia gtx 460. Why did Dell give us such an inferior Win7?
I mean, both laptops have the same speed but the core one lasts 4x as long as the old one! They're so similar but it's so *convenient* that the newer one is running win7 better.
Doesn't anyone else think that Dell is crapping our Win7 on purpose? It's a conspiracy folks!
I guess there are several clarifications needed.
1. X10's brightness is controlled by fluorescent illuminators as compared to Arc's LED backlit. have you ever wondered why sometimes the backlight doesn't dim smoothly? fluorescent illuminated display consumes hell lot more battery as compared to LED. this is rather self explanatory.
2. the process in x10's and arc's processor are different. x10 uses 65nm while arc uses 45nm. power consumption and efficiency in both are obviously different. performance wise, different too.
3. adreno 200 and adreno 205 are of major difference. adreno 205 enables hardware accelerated flash and rendering while 200 does not. adreno 200 is ancient FYI.
4. FPS on the x10 is uncapped to 55. i suppose that doesn't make much difference with 60?
There is no "3d fps cap". This is the actual performance of Adreno200 (compare it with N1)
Cheers,
z

I don't think there is a way to directly overclock GPU on SoC. it's not like in PC we have a separate graphics card to run graphic rendering.
100MB RAM is dedicated to vRAM.

Thanks ToonXW , keizbaby and Z for repling. Got it now
So is there any way to overclock rhe whole chip on stock 2.3.3
Why is battery life better on Arc:
X10 65nm CPU vs 45nm on Arc
X10 998MHz @ 1300mV vs 1024MHz @ 1200mV on Arc
Alone these things make it better.
And you forgot to mention that Arc's screen reacts faster/better.
Couldn't type really fast on my X10, it didn't register some touches then. On my Arc I can type really, really fast.
All these things make it better, BUT the Arc is 1 year newer than the X10!
In 1 year hardware makes huge steps forward.

Already overclock CPU speed to 1.3GHz, install custom ROM if you want it.
The differences between the X10 and Arc are CPU, RAM, GPU. Same CPU name with different code 200-205, RAM: 384/512, GPU is included on CPU so new CPU technology mean better GPU. That why everything on ARC is smoother than X10. You must know exactly what you are talking about, not only the value of processor.
The x10 is pretty damn smooth now, I get all day usage from it, constantly on WiFi. The people complaining must have forgotten what 1.6 was like, it's night and day now.

Benchmarks

Tegra got smoked
http://androidcommunity.com/galaxy-s-iii-quad-core-benchmarks-blow-us-away-20120503/
Hm.. Tegra 3 seems to win the GPU bench?
Quadrant sucks though. Will be waiting for more benchs.
Here are some other benchmarks (next to quandrant also SunSpider and browsermark)
Quadrant scores -
sgs3
cpu - 12781
memory - 4652
io - 7606
2d - 1000
3d - 2171
total - 5642
S4
cpu - 8505
memory - 7547
io - 6394
2d - 990
3d - 2204
total - 5128
tegra3
cpu - 12493
memory - 3472
io - 4769
2d - 962
3d - 2346
total - 4804
they seem pretty even in cpu/gpu capability. the s4 gets smoked in cpu performance according to those quadrant scores. interesting.. i thought it was faster.
Wow, the S3 doesn't seem to smoke the competition.
im interested about the antutu...can someone bring some more benchmarks?
Even if Tegra got smoked games will look better, so i'm really thinking how the S3 will be better in general use except for benchmarks...

GPU performance gap between Tegra3 and Exynos4 Quad is huge

Faster than iPhone4S' powervr sgx543mp2
LOL quadrant sucks so hard. the new mali 400 is killing tegra 3. according to http://www.anandtech.com/show/5810/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-performance-preview

um no
That's stolen straight out of engadget and they have recorded the lowest performance out of any of these tech blog/news sites
Antutu Benchmark available here:

In the video above it's got 5324 Quadrant and 11492 Antutu. Not much different from HOX.
Here are some results from the Swedish androidsite "Swedroid". It's in swedish (doh!) but you should be able to look thru the scores anyway

In my humble opinion. To say that the exynos "kills" the Tegra 3 is just...plain...wrong.
They seem to be very capable CPUs in both of these beasts!

Did you see the gpu scores. Kills tegra 3.

Imo they are very close to eachother, i would say exynos wins by a little margin could be just the software dragging it down, would love to see a pure ICS build doing the test.
Benchmarks mean squat.. it comes down to user experience.. if u can really feel the difference.. also, apps need to be fine tuned for quad core too.. so I guess u won't feel an actual difference..

good benchmark do shows the raw power of the mobile, its never meant to test the user experience.

All the hands-on video clip made it seemed as if s3 is doing great in general ui transitions. It was noticeably quicker when used side by side.
Always astounds me how people are judging by benchmarks. I mean, its a phone, not a server station.
I wont be running virtual machines for rendering movies on it. I wont be playing Crysis 3 on it.
I`ll phone, message, watch clips, pictures, surf and use navigation. Even the single core phones can do that perfectly.

More GPU power

I wish this device had a better GPU. More likely a custom Mali T880 MP8 or MP12. This phone is what Huawei calls their flagship phone. Only GPU has let it down. Mali T880 MP4 can't just handle everything so smoothly in full HD.
they are slowly getting better
What we need is proper kernel sources so there can be a custom kernel built with GPU improvements, governors and overclock. I just wont count on that any time soon for this phone..

Overclocking just doesn't help much. All the GPU power is needed for gaming. Overclocking causes heating which throttles down CPU freqs. And over clocking really doesn't help much other than first 10-15 minutes.
My suggestion was just that they should have added more GPU clusters. This GPU is found in low budget devices.

Sorry, but for real gaming get a PC and even there U could use a Emulator for Android games
i actually disagree with this. this mali quad cluster is on par, if not better than adreno 510 found in what is pretty much considered the best bang for the buck cpu out there, snap 650/2. not only is 650 a upper midrange/flasghsip material SoC, it performs generally quite well and runs everything. kirin beats it's gpu, or at least matches it, and wipes the floor with it when it comes to cpu power. sure, gpu is not 530 or mali mp12, but then again we paid a midrange price and got a flagship phone. it's a compromise. despite that, it still runs everything ok so its an acceptable gpu. not rly sure you'd see a huge difference between this gpu and mp12 on s7 since one on s7 has to push double the pixels, so real difference should be 50ish% tops. most gpu benches run the screen @ 1080P and sure, in that case it beats our cluster, but that's not s7's native resolution is it.
in the end, imo its worth it since the entire package simply performs great. i've had my share of phones, and this lil monster simply kills it, even without a custom rom. its just that well optimized.

I have a PC and not all games work well with emulators. And it's completely a different experience. I can't put my pc in my pocket ?

This is not a flagship GPU. Chinese phone generally offer more at this price. LeEco Le2 has this same GPU and costs ~⅓ of this phone's price. Xiaomi MI5 has an adreno 530 and it costs lesser than this phone. I would say a custom MP8 MALI GPU could have taken this phone to a different class. And yeah benchmark scores doesn't make any sense to me. They have just show some score based on 2 mins of testing. We can't conclude real life use with benchmark scores
xiaomi / letv phones might offer better specs for price, in china or india. there are some major issues when buying those, especially for ppl in europe/US. chinese brands are hard to come by, and even if you buy them for cheap/order from china you're pretty much stuck with a phone and no warranty. shipping to china is usually not worth considering the price. if you actually find a retailer that will sell lets say mi5 and provide a 2yr warranty, phone tends to cost a lot more than honor, at least thats the case where I'm at (EU). not to mention you can get honor8 for cheap when signing a contract. good luck doing that with chinese brands.
this is not a rant about chinese brands (myb rant bout xiaomi cause their open source policy is crap), i still use my rn3p and its been mostly satisfying esp. with CM13. however its been less then a year and it already started behaving badly. quality & control simply isnt on par. it was cheap sure, but it dies fast too, and there is no way for me to repair it. it is what it is, a compromise. cheap and you risk it, lil more expensive, but at least you're safe.
oh and in regards to mi5, unless you buy that premium version, phone is actually quite disappointing. build quality is meh, performance might be decent, but miui8 performs worse than EMUI so day to day usage is kinda pain. wish they did smth with that crapware os they ship. debloating is first step
I agree to what you say, but I won't include Mali T880 MP4 to a flagship hardware.
well you could say it's not flagship compared to the likes of snap820/1 / exynos, but it's the best huawei has to offer. for 1080p its acceptable. people that dont game really wont be able to tell a difference, for rest it just works. if you really look at kirin SoC's, even the gpu in 960 isnt top of the line. sure it kinda manages to narrow the gap with mentioned SoC's, but new ones are around the corner and kirin will again be worse in gpu department. this is standard for huawei honestly. same goes for mtk tho, yet mtk is widely popular (sure cheap price is the main reason) despite pretty crappy gpu. goes to show most ppl dont really need that top of the line gpu on board.
if hauwei was smart, they could've simply avoided this issue by releasing complete source. well built custom rom would be smth that most enthusiast would prefer over maxed out gpu. guess this wont happen tho xD

Well Kirin 960 has a very good GPU. Far better than this one. But again it has only 8 clusters which is good as of now. The new smartphones which will be using Mali G71 will have 16 clusters I guess. Cause that GPU can be configured upto 32 clusters. And Mali G71 MP8 isn't bad at all. It's really powerful and it can keep most demanding games run smoothly more than a year or two. But Mali T880 MP4 can't, only vulkan can help a bit. And I heard vulkan is kinda outdated/broken here in Nougat update. That's a bad news.

Let get this correct Huawei don't call this their flagship phone.
This is Honor flagship phone, which is a separate brand Huawei has been pushing for a few years now..

Okay. Whatever the brand is this is what they call their flagship phone. But it lacks some GPU power. I'm experiencing a very bad GPU performance on this phone. I've to enable ROG mode if I'm to play mc5 smoothly. And powering a HD display even my three year old tablet with Adreno 320 does a better job.
well, kirin 955 = 950 when it comes to gpu performance, so gpu debate stands for now ex flagship p9 which has pretty much same specs as honor8.
as far as performance goes 320 is deffo worse than mali880. in 99% cases adreno 510 is better than 320, so 880mp4 should be too. im guessing either bad optimizations from huawei or devs are the culprit.

You can get a nividia shield cloned app and you can even Play gta5 on your Phone dont know whats your Problem. if you have LTE you can Stream every game to your Phone. By the way the real feeling of gaming is only on the PC
Sorry for being redundant, but this is not Huawei's flagship phone, it's a budget phone. If you want their flagship get the Mate 9. Or maybe the upcoming Honor V9. The 'Honor' brand to me is a (budget) offshoot similar to Oppo to OnePlus. It makes sense for them to use a word in their brand name that western people are actually able to pronounce.
If would help if EMUI5 has the 720p mode working, but currently it doesn't. I'm afraid to use Android ADB command to force it, because it most likely won't look correctly and sometimes soft brick phones that isn't running stock Android, which is a pain to setup the phone from scratch.
