What applications use the DAC on the V20 or do they all use it? - LG V20 Questions & Answers

A quick check around XDA and apparently the V10 app fix works on the V20?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/themes/dac-fix-lg-v10-v20-t3484294
Do applications like Neutron, PlayerPro, etc, work with the DAC? What's the threshold (ex: Must be FLAC to activate or perhaps 320 kbps MP3/OGG/AAC, etc)?
The reason why I ask is because on the V10, at first, only a handful of applications used the DAC and then an update (Marshmallow) changed that. Wondering if that is still the case or if this is good to go across the board out of the box?

Not so with the V10. Google Music did work, but many other apps did not use the DAC. They actually had to make a list of what apps work and what apps didn't with the DAC:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v10/general/music-apps-using-dac-t3252596

The V10 does, but didn't initially and update came and fixed that. As for the V20 it does work with Play Music without anything changes to anything.

It pulls up a regular Google search result, which prioritizes youtube results first. So the first few results are youtube and the rest are web pages.
But I've been checking into this and apparently there is a lot of people for whom Google Now music commands are not working at all. Maybe Google made it exclusive to the USA?

Where are you located exactly? What ROM and version are you on exactly?
It's weird- it works for some people and not for others. That's why I'm wondering whether it is a geographic restriction. I'm in Canada.

I'm in Seattle on the stock 4.4 ROM.
Sent from my Nexus 4, while driving in my Evo9.
It doesn't work for me either
and I'm also outside of the U.S.
why would there be a geographic restriction for this?
Not only the Nexus
I know this is a Nexus 4 forum and my device is not a Nexus 4, but I thought I'd mention that this issue is not limited to these devices.
Also, the problem isn't only outside the U.S., and isn't only with 4.4. Or I guess there might be a different issue that keeps it working from outside the U.S. But there's definitely issues inside the U.S. as well. Unless it's tied to my specific phone model in the US, the Samsung Galaxy S3 (which is possible I supposed because I know Samsung does weird things over standard Android on their phones and I suppose something Samsung has done could be interfering with the Google Now music play functionality). I've had my S3 for a little over a year now and this has been a problem since the original 4.1 software that came on it up through the 4.3 software I got about a month ago. I desperately want to make my S3 use Google Now instead of S-Voice for various reasons, and I know how and have done that, but Google Now is just useless when it comes to playing music by voice in the car. S-Voice may be crap for a number of other reasons, but IF it actually understands what I say, S-Voice never fails to correctly play the music.
It's not that Google Now music voice commands never work, but they only seem to work about 1/3 of the time. Artists seem to be the most reliable, but even then it's only about half the time. Some artists it will understand and play just fine, other artists it will only display standard Google Search results with no option at the bottom to select your music player. Album is about the same as artist, works about half the time. Trying to play a specific song almost never works and displays the standard Google Search results probably 90% of the time. Playlist seems to work most of the time but I only have 3 playlists.
I've seen a lot of other threads on various forums reporting the same issue from various Android versions and other, non-Samsung, phones too.

Disable apps

What are the recommended apps to disable and/or get rid of? I did a factory reset because of nasty wake locks and trying to figure everything that can be disabled without losing features or anything. I know some of this is subjective, but still like some ideas. Thanks.

Until I can completely remove some bloat, I have the following turned off so far. It's by no means a thorough list.
Accessories
Audible
BlurbCheckout
Calculator (installed 3rd party Calculator)
Caller Name ID
Cloud
FamilyBase Companion
Google Play Books
HP Print Service Plugin
Message+ (Didn't even bother to figer out what this is before I killed it)
Messages (installed Hangouts and/or 3rd party messagin app)
My InfoZone
NFL Mobile
Smart Remote (downloaded the latest WatchOn app from Samsung)
Swype
Verizon Location Agent
Verizon Support and Protection
Verizon Tones
VZ Navigator
As far as the text-to-speech deletion goes, just uninstall whichever ones you don't anticipate needing.
Settings>Language and Input>text-to-speech options>Listen to an example. Really it's personal preference, and uninstalling unused tts voice data only serves to free up internal storage. For example, the "high quality" female English US voice for Google TTS is 244MB, The Samsung high quality voice data is around 90MB per language/gender.

Samsung has launched s5 devices with less permissions do to whatever you want! So maybe you have to root your device (which is not possible right now bcoz it will cut your warranty out) So another solution for it is try to search for an app on play store which disables system applications! Without root
I've turned off the following:
Accessories
Audible
Blurb Checkout
Caller Name ID
Family Base Companion
Flipboard
Google Play Books
Google Play Newsstand
IMDb
Isis Mobile Wallet
My InfoZone
My Magazine
NFL Mobile
Samsung Link Platform

I believe samsung billing is for app purchases through their proprietary app store
Samsung Link is a protocol for connecting only with samsung TV's/laptops - has functionality for screen-mirroring, DLNA only with samsung branded devices.
Samsung Galaxy... I'm not entirely sure what it does to be honest. I've tested fairly extensively if any functionality / apps / services are broken as a result, and everything still seems to work fine. I have a suspicion that this is related to a tutorial/demo function.

Downloads app is just an app that shows a history/list of everything you've recently downloaded (e.g. in the downloads folder). I prefer to use ESFileExplorer as it's more versatile as a file manager, and I don't care for an app that tracks file downloads/history.
In previous android versions, I believe the Media app was part of what cached/listed files such as images (thumbnails), music files, docs, etc. I vaguely recall disabling it in the past to find that all my MP3's and photos no longer appeared in the gallery/google music app. I would not disable it if my memory serves me correctly.
Yeah, your battery usage looks about in-par with mine. I came from a GNex and was used to seeing display always overtaking androidOS/systemUI (man, that phone had atrocious battery life and screen-on time)... the GS5 has such a great power-sipping display that I came to the same surprise as you to find it ranks on-par/sometimes below OS usage in a normal day. The battery life on this phone rocks.
EDIT: Media usage will sometimes spike if you've recently added a bunch of new files (photos, mp3's, etc.) to your device, as it's scanning/caching/indexing lists to the files. I'd give it a day or two if that's the case, and you'll see it won't consume much of anything once things are static on your phone.

Oh OK. I see. So perfectly safe to disable downloads. What about the media app itself? Do you have it disabled? That screen shot with the high media usage, I'm not sure we have it was so high. It's first time it has been like that and I haven't added any more music. Another question.
Do You Know What The Chrome sandbox is? And does your keyboard ever do that thing with the capital letters?

I don't have the media app disabled and wouldn't recommend it. I also wouldn't disable chrome sandbox ( though I'm not sure of its function, its installed alongside the app so it may be a plugin for other apps).
Not sure what keyboard caps problem you're referring to. I use only the android keyboard (not Samsung nor Swype).

Strange Issue with Missing Apps

So I just finished copying my ~40GB of music to the SD card, with plans to use Samsung's stock Music app for listening to local music. I got on the train this morning, and the app was missing! I disabled some things in Package Disabler Pro over the past week with the phone, but never Music or anything else similar. It doesn't show at all on the phone now.
Also, while trying to test Root Explorer's issue with writing to our SD card, I found it to be missing from my app drawer (Nova), but showing up if I search for it. I haven't hidden the app at all, and even more, it doesn't show under TouchWiz or Google Now Launcher either.
I think my phone is possessed.

I haven't removed anything on my phone and I have not had the Samsung Music player from day one. Root Explorer shows up fine in my app drawer but as we know, it isn't working correctly and crashes when trying to grant permissions.
As stated, Samsung Music is available to download from the Samsung apps store, I just downloaded it to test and see it in the app drawer now.

Then I am even more confused. I even opened it to test my BT headphones, but now it's gone.
You have to go into Galaxy Apps and download. It's one of the things Samsung did to lean out the apps. Some of the apps people are used to see and possibly use can be gotten there.
Music app was never there initially. I installed it from Galaxy Apps. I heard that video player is also "missing".
Yeah, I didn't have it either. Freaked me out because I don't like using other music players. I was about to freak out until I searched it in Galaxy apps

VR mode for non-VR compatible mobiles

I was wondering if this was possible. I just need to run an app on VR mode. That is my main requirement, to use PS4 remote play by twisted89 on VR mode to enjoy PS4 games on VR. So if a specific app cannot be turned into vr mode why not the whole device screen? Is that also not possible? I already found an app called Trinus VR, but it requires a PC, so I want this to work only with the mobile itself. Any help would be greatly appreciated

that i think is impossible. since trinus was made for pc mirroring. sorry
I think what his trying to say is and correct me if I'm wrong but, he wants an app that turns any other app into a split-view vr style outcome even if pseudo, which in turn he then wants to run (after activating the previous app that turns stuff into vr mode) the remote play app to play his ps4 games in pseudo vr mode.
I think if an app like this was developed it would need root access to allow cross app vr displayed split-view, as i think it will make the whole display split-view which in turn will make all apps "vr". Not sure if there will be stutter problems on the default launcher but that's easily overcomeable using a vr launcher i assume or just coding it to be disabled on popular launchers.
I know for a fact that the Lenovo K5 does this with stock rom, so... it's possible. Maybe you can buy one?

Exactly what I meant and you just read my mind man, I am trying to play PS4 in VR via the remote play. The best option I came up with so far was Trinus VR, but I want to do this by my phone alone with the remote play app by twisted89.
And yeah, yeah, what all this guy said was what I meant, I need an app to turn on entire mobile screen into VR mode or just the one app I need, thank-you guys

Search for the SBS apk
It is not possible to turn the screen into SBS mode (side by side). Only thing that exists is native SBS that works on versions 4.4.2 and bellow or some versions of Cm13 with Android 6.0.1.
It will not work on any stock Rom.
I have looked everywhere. Tried everything.
There are apps that can play vr videos and allow sbs web browsing on non vr/cardboard compatible phones.
For videos: VRTV VR is pretty good.
For web browsing: NoMone VR
For anything else, Trinus via pc would be the only option.
Install an emulator on your pc. Install Android on it. Then the apk you want. Mirror your pc to your Android phone. Use VR
A difficult issue, though. As far as I found, those are the basic requirements for playing VR stuff:
2GB + Ram
1080p to 2K Screen resolution
1.4GHz+ CPU speed
Gyroscope (in some cases - not)
At least 4.7 inch display
16M+ colors
Those are basic requirements to play some basic apps. In order to have better FPS performance you will need some more advanced hardware.
Also, if you are interested in VR software development - check my article about best VR/AR SDK which you will need to create apps.
P.S. Found this answer on Quora
Any change?
I used to have a Lenovo ph, and never realized how fortunate I was to have instant vr at the click of a button. For the whole system.! Now I am stuck trying to use cardboard crap app which does a tenth of what I want..
Even just streaming on a browser I'm finding difficult.
I want full screen split no movement. Or anything like a standard split screen on device.
Anyone had any luck?

Where are the ringtones stored? Bluetooth lag?

I have a 2014 Toyota Corolla LE.
I had a Nexus 6P. No issues at all.
I broke it and could only afford to replace it with a Nexus 5X. Project Fi.
Bluetooth lagged. Mouth moving on YouTube is off from what sound is playing.
Also, every time I started my car and switched to bluetooth a ringtone would start playing and wouldn't stop. You stop it and it starts back up again. You can play YouTube or Bandcamp, but the ringtone still played. This was a custom ringtone of my own I had dropped in the Ringtones folder. Not sure what the correct fix is, but changing my ringtone and deleting the file fixed it. I then stored the file in a different directory and re-added as a ringtone problem lagged.
Just got the LG V20 tonight. I was hoping it was just an issue with the 5X, but now seems it might be an LG thing? New phone does the same thing. Bluetooth lag. One of LG's ringtones plays on repeat every time I start bluetooth. I have no idea where they are stored. The ringtones folder is empty.

I'm surprised that the phone is playing your ringtones. Do you have a third party app for playing music? I'd think the built in app would know to not play ringtones.
I think maybe if you put an empty file in the ringtone directory (I think called nomedia) it will stop playing the ringtone.
Of course the next problem may be that you won't have privileges to do that without root access.

Thanks. This is a brand new phone. I had absolutely NOTHING installed except for what came with the phone. I bought the phone, the guy said it takes 5-10 minutes to port over a phone number. I walked out to my car and my old phone already had no service! It was that quick! So I unboxed this phone and turned it on. The first thing I did while sitting in the parking lot was to remove all bloatware that it would let me. It had games installed and other crap. I didn't do any updates until I got home on WiFi.
The thing is the ringtone didn't start playing right away. I was listening to music from YouTube on my way home. I stopped for a bite to eat, drove home, and I don't remember when the ringtone started, but now every time my car starts (and it's on bluetooth) the ringtone starts playing on loop. Last night my Aunt/Uncle was over, so I couldn't park in the driveway. Cars aren't allowed to be on the street after midnight, so eventually I went out and moved my car. My phone was in the house and the main screen was off. When I came back in the house the ringtone was playing and the player was on the little screen.

Thanks.
I decided not to delete the ringtone in case I ever want it for something.
Let's see what happens now I set a custom ringtone of my own. When I had the Nexus 5X on, I had this dance song that I cut a piece out of.. it would loop "you can fight, but you can't always win" over and over.
So I looked. It's Google Play music that is opening. It plays the LG Life Is Good song over and over. Putting a nomedia file did not work.

Wierd.
You might check settings in Google PLay, and see if you can specify a path for it to play music from on your phone. If music is kept in a specific folder, say Music, and set the app to play music only from that folder, maybe that'll help.
I don't use Google Play Music, so I'm just reaching here.

I do not use Google Play Music either. In fact, I don't store music on my phone. It's on a USB drive directly in my car's dashboard. It never leaves.
Anyway, I may have found a fix, but it's 4:30AM and I can't exactly go outside and make noise, plus I am tired.
I opened the Play Music App and in settings there's something that says "Manage Downloads". On the bottom it shows the LG Life Is Good sound. I hit clear queue to get rid of it. I'm confident this will work, but I'll know when I wake up in 9 or 10 hours.

I'm confused. You said it is Google Play Music, then you said you don't use Google PLay Music.
I think any Google apps you DON'T use should just be uninstalled. As far as that goes, I uninstall all apps, or disable them, that I don't use.
On another note: I find it interesting that nobody else is replying here. I am finding the community for the LG V20 to be much less active than what I experienced in the Samsung forums. Also related to the community...no stickies for things that are so commonly needed.

I do not use Google Play Music. You cannot uninstall it. It comes with the phone. Might be part of Google Play. But anyway, you cannot uninstall it unless you are rooted. There is no root for Sprint LG V20 far as I know yet.
Other apps you cannot uninstall: Facebook, Instagram, Facebook Messanger, Sprint Spot, and some other Sprint stuff. I don't use any of that stuff.
While there is an "uninstall" button.. that is the most annoying feature. It uninstalls updates only and brings it back to the version that was installed with your phone, then it's annoying because it always shows you have an update ready.
Anyway, I haven't been outside yet to start up my car, but I think it'll solve my problem.
Interesting. As you might have guessed, I don't have my V20 yet. It's disheartening to hear some of those apps that can't be uninstalled. I wonder why they install apps not theirs that are obviously available on Play Store.
I guess I'll be forced to root.
I hope things work out for you. Keep me posted. I may find myself in the same boat.
You should be able to disable it.

Good to hear. I had suggested that too.

Although, I still find it interesting that Google Play Music is part of the rom.
I think using Force Stop and Disabling is the only way to stop the madness, as I cleared out the Playlist and it automatically added my current ringtone.
Anecdotal but this sounds familiar to me. I feel like my husband may have been complaining about a similar issue with his phone playing some default preloaded music file when it connects to his car's Bluetooth.
The thing is.... He has a note 3 and a 2014 Ford Focus ST. So... Hmmm.
I'll have to see if it's really the same thing. I'll try to remember to ask him about it tomorrow.

I was previously with Sprint with an HTC One M8, but switched to Googles Project Fi, and now back to Sprint with the LG V20.
What I've noticed is it seems root seems to come out on other networks before they come out on Sprint. I can't comment on what software other companies pre-load on your system, but both times Sprint had 15-20 things. Some of it could be removed.. a few games, etc, but some cannot be removed so I Force Stopped them and Disabled them. I am unsure what comes back if I reboot my phone, but whatever for now I'll keep stopping them if I have to.
