Pretty Excited - Xiaomi Mi 5s Guides, News, & Discussion

I ordered a Xiaomi Mi5s (4gb/128gb) on Wednesday. Shipment tracking says it'll be here (Canada) on Tuesday.
Anyone else in Canada, or North America order it and get it in their hands yet?
So excited! ?

thats expensive. From the reviews it seems the 5s camera is better than 5s plus

Do u think the mi 5s plus is a good alternative the the Pixel?

No, but how desperate are you for a new phone? What are you currently using? Pixel as good as it may be, is overpriced.

Have an s7 edge. But I want a new phone. I like the uniqueness of xiaomi devices. Had a mi 5 pro. Just want something new to play with.

With an S7 Edge and Mi5 pro i would do nothing. Play with what you have. But if money isn't a problem wait at least 2 days for Xiaomi Mi Note 2 release.
For me Mi5s is slightly better than Mi5 for it's camera but Mi5S plus a completely non sense, worst camera than Mi5s, something unacceptable for a dual camera that they say would do magic!!!

Well if I had s7 edge I wouldn't be upgrading anytime soon. Can you wait about 6 months for the Mi6? They tend to release new phones every 6 months

But mi5s doesn't have optical stabilization that mi5 has.

Neither Google Pixel have it and look at the photos it can take, it has the same sensor of Mi5s, but Xiaomi image algoritm sucks. Software stabilization could surprass physical stab as it isn't perfect either, and never will be. Physical compensation are not a real time perfect thing. With software you have freedom to choose or predict the best frame from a continuous shaky movement. Remember that on a shaky movement there is a moment the camera isn't moving right and it just not moved left either. If you capture 120fps (1sec) and have an algoritm to choose the best one you will get a better still picture than just with one single shot physical compensated. Google says it's camera takes 5 photos and choose the best one. With video another technic is used, you assume that around a frame a certain amount of pixels could be lost for shaky recovery, you lose some resolution but you could make perfectly still video if you don't shake it too much. Aperture and sensibility to brightness it's the most important thing on image capture, it's not recovered no matter what. Yes Mi5s camera is better on that!

This price is joke. I wouldn't buy even for 399
Hi end phone with low end software
For that price I would definitely buy OP5T
What do you mean with low-end software though? Afaik xiaomi is one of the few vendor who updates regularly even their 5 y/o devices & always update android's latest security patch & their flagships line-up get comparably faster in update of latest android version. From customer's standpoint, that is pretty high-end maintenance there.

Exactly even I also think same for the price it offers. OP5T is a fantastic device in its price range even beats all competitive devices like LG V30 Plus, Honor View 10 & Samsung devices :fingers-crossed:
I have both the OnePlus 5T and the Mi6 Blue ceramic.
They are VERY different phones.
The OnePlus is excellent - very fast, very smooth and the OS has the biggest development community on XDA.
The Mi 6 is excellent also. If you know what you're doing, it photographs better, the oleophilic coating on the screen is much nicer, the feel in the hand is better than any other phone out there. And it's fast.
It's like BMW vs. Mercedes. Very different. Very capable.
The biggest difference is that the OP it's OLED and the Mi6 is LCD.
So.
I'm looking forward to seeing the Mi 7.

Note 7 or Note 7 Pro

I have seen Xiaomi is going to release Note 7 in Feb 28 but I have been wondering that "It comes it with snapdragon 660 or 675?". If they release Note 7 with snapdragon 675, the Note 7 Chinese version will lose android development because no developer will buy it.
The only difference is the cpu? Perhaps it's the same rom?

I'm talking about other factors, even my 3 years old Zenfone could take 48mp pics.
The rate increases by almost 50% for just camera and SD675 upgrade.
What 50% rate? If you are talking about price, you are mistaken. It will be 50USD more expensive than RN7 for the equivalent ram/storage variant. And thing about in screen fingerprint is a rumor based from that 48 Mp teaser photo. If the specs were based off the teaser, there would also be 24W charging and liquid cooling. But that would put this phone in above 300 USD price range which would basically make it more expensive than a Pocophone. And nobody would be buying it. But they are presenting it is a game changer, budget king and so on. Makes no sense from marketing point of view and is completely illogical business-wise. After all, all phone manufacturers are in the business of making money.
Don't board the sheep train. There will be no in screen fingerprint, only different cpu and camera sensor, eventually more ram/storage
the big thing for the pro is north american support. the note 7 doesn't support proper north american radios, the pro will, its the same with all previous generations

I think note 7 is much more bang for buck in terms of value for money when compared to the note 7 pro.
the Rate at which technology and phones cycle now you need to upgrade yearly now to be on par with whats new, I would much rather spend on mid range once a year than buy pro or flagship and look outdated a year and half later...

do you buy this phone today?

I need change my nubia z11 mini s, the volume of calls is unusable is so low, never was good at all. I have found an offer about 200 euros is like new on amazon, i was looking to get redmi note 7pro, xiaomi 8 or meizu 16 I love meizu design and camera looks pretty nice but lacks of support and scene. Maybe in a future I will buy nokia 9 pureview.
I am not sure about to do, I had a desire and keeping good memories. But it just have one camera, could i have bouquet efect pictures? The frames really doesn't like me but and size. I am looking as well a good mic for calls, before the z11 I had a sony z3c and as well fails on mic calls was horrible in the end of phone live.
The phone is still worth it? Seems that doesn't have too may scene and rooms. In Spain this brand is dead literally really few people have it.
Do still buy it nowdays?
Thank you
Edit: I can buy brand new mi8 about 300 euros, mi mix 2s 290 euros or htc u11 like new on amazon about 200 euros. Which do you prefer?

U11 has really a great camera, that can not be compared with other mobiles mentioned.
Also system is really fluid and user experience is very polished.
Last year from U11 I went for Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S: i kept it about a month then got a U12+

buy htc u11 and you will have no regrets!
just yesterday I sold an oneplus 6 to go back to the htc u11: it's a fabulous phone, nice touch & feel, fantastic camera, nice display, fantastic size, superlative videos with super 3D audio, fingerprint reader very fast to unlock it.
Even today I think the htc u11 is a fantastic phone that can compete with all the other top on the market, even in 2018-2019.
It has only one defect: the updates.
If it's not a problem for you, you can not spend your money better.
And then you also have Amazon's guarantee!
On what Amazon did you find it for 200 euros?
Forgive my English: I use Google translator.
I got HTC U11 for about 250 USD around a month back. It is a great phone. I bought it keeping it as a backup phone and using Note 8 as a main phone but it happened vice versa.
Absolutely recommend even in 2 years from now you won't regret it !

Suggest to go for U11, the main problem is hard to get new software and probably no official Pie to taste. I've got U11 and RedMi 5 Plus and my friend just got a Mi 8 Lite yesterday.
The camera is superb on U11 and Mi 8 Lite(the same camera with Mi8 without OIS and aperture down to f1.9 from f1.8) is far away from U11. I've also got a Sony Z5 Compact and the photo/video quality on Mi 8 Lite is only about the same to Z5c in reality with faster dual pixel focus, never fully believe reviews on net, some are paid. I guess the Mi 8 does better but won't come close to U11 in real life usage.
If you are looking for RedMi note 7 pro, the good is 4000mah battery with sd675 u will receive least 50% more battery life over U11 with downgraded cpu and camera.
Nokia 9 is good only for taking photo with a crazy 12.4 stops dynamic range but photo lacking of details and the video quality comes out from Nokia 9 is bad too.
EDIT: https://twitter.com/htc/status/1105203212477292547
HTC said U11 Pie is still working on so I think we will receive latest security patches later.
U11 all the way. Its way underappreciated phone. Excellent screen, speakers. Superb camera with/without gcam port. Good battery life. Has custom ROM development as well with unlockable bootloader. Its the last issue-free phone from HTC.

Hi,
I bought one last week, loving it so far. I came from a Samsung S7 and there are almost identical apart from nice large screen on U11 and better front camera.
It has a nice UI, ROMS on here are good. Battery life good.

I would recommend it, if you can purchase it at a decent price, and if you are comfortable installing LineageOS. The combination of the U11 hardware, the LineageOS software, and the Google Camera app make this phone still, to this day, one of the smoothest phones that can take great pictures.
I have owned it for 2 years and plan on holding onto it for another year, or until there is significant improvement in the Google Pixel line.
In my case the camera especially when you use stock camera app. isn't good. Too much noise, but if you use Google camera mod it changes everything. Battery backup is decent, even when my device is 2 years old now.

The Huawei P30 pro has a great camera and a solid battery but a 1080p display and the software experience isn't that great imo.
The Note 9 is an amazing all around phone that I would consider if you're looking for a bargain but the Note 10 will be available in less than a month.
The S10 plus has everything, the camera, the display the software experience the battery. You just can't go wrong with this phone.

Samsung has been using the same camera sensor since the Galaxy 7 which is 4 generations of Galaxy phones with no upgrade. Currently Huawei and Xiaomi phones both take much better pics than Samsung. If camera is your top concern Samsung should not be anywhere near the top of your list. The camera on my Xiaomi MI 9 which costs all of $350 on sale smokes the S10+ camera.

I agree. The S10+ has a lot of great things about it but the OP specifically listed the camera as being one of his top priorities. Samsung has fallen behind its competitors in that area. If the OP had a Mate 20 he might be disappointed with the Galaxy camera.
The Galaxy S10+ also charges much less quickly than Huawei and Xiaomi phones (the speed difference is huge with wireless charging) which is the other obvious area where Samsung has fallen behind their competitors.
I think Samsung's huge market share made them complacent which is why they haven't kept pace with innovation--the Galaxy phones have only been offering incremental upgrades from year to year for a while now.
Supposedly the S11 Galaxy line is finally going to change that but we have a while to wait on those.
S10+ exynos for the win

I had Mi9 right before S10 (now S10+). Mi9 low light and indoor light photos are soo bad, even sometimes unusable, no matter with or without tripod. No OIS... Day photos are very good, same like S10+

edit: @ jhs38 like usual, stock camera doesn't have any options for improving picture quality in Auto mode. Just picture format, light conditions and HDR on/off

I can't agree at all. People who say that usually have the camera app set up wrong. For me both the MI 9 and Mix 2S took excellent low light pictures. I also owned the Huawei Mate 20P and Pixel XL, which are both considered excellent camera phones. All 4 of those phones took better pictures than my Galaxy S10+ regardless of light or any other conditions.

I also owned the Huawei Mate 20P and Pixel XL, which are both considered excellent camera phones. All 4 of those phones took better pictures than my Galaxy S10+ regardless of light or any other conditions.

Wow man, I don't know what did you smoke because there's no way the mate20pro has better camera than the s10+ (I ditched my mate 20 pro)
The wide lens is wider on the s10, the selfies are MILES better, because of the autofocus (only Samsung phones have it)
The video on ANY Huawei (or Chinese phone for that matter) phone is horrible.
And yes the STOCK camera has better night mode on Huawei/Xiaomi but you just install the gcam and boom, problem solved (oh did I forgot to mention that you can't install **** on Kirin processors?)
And that's just on the camera department.
The screen is just hideous on any phone that isn't a galaxy or an iPhone(no I don't have an iPhone but I've seen them and they're good)
The dual speaker is waaay better also on galaxy, specially s10
The software on Chinese phones is horrible.
And the list could go on and on...

I don't think it's even possible to find a professional tech review that claims the S10+ camera is better than the Mate 20 Pro camera--although I never use smartphone cameras to record video so I can't comment on that.
Most people use their smartphone cameras for point and shoot pictures and for low light or bright light pics, detail and color the M20P camera is far superior to the S10+ camera.
When you are talking about specific photographic effects that's a different area because a lot of that is achieved through the coding of the camera app and some phone brands choose to focus on different options than other brands.
I'm not serious enough about smartphone photography to play with all of the various effects and options available in the cameras on any smartphone. If you are you certainly might find things you prefer in the Samsung camera app which was considered one of the best in the business until a couple years ago.
As far as I know everybody who does professional tests and reviews gives the cameras in the recent Huawei flagships much higher marks than the S10+ camera.
From personal experience when I was in a car wreck in April I took lots of pics with my M20P (before going to the hospital emergency room for 9 hours because of a serious concussion).
When I later printed out individual pics of the accident damage at enlarged 8.5"x11" size the level of detail in the enlargements was astounding--in pics taken from 6 feet away something as small as the head of a screw was razor sharp.
In my own tests with the S10+ camera enlarged pictures don't have anything close to comparable clarity and detail.
The only reason I eventually opted to get rid of my M20P after about 6 months was that it didn't support Volte on T-Mobile in the United States (unlike the P20 Pro, Mate 10 Pro, Mix 2S & MI 9). It turns out that on T-Mobile if a phone supports band 12 without also supporting Volte calls frequently go straight to voicemail without the phone ringing first.
I got a MI 9 which I like but the battery in that phone is too small for the hardware plus MIUI is a lot more buggy than it was on the Mix 2S.
When I found a good deal on an unlocked S10+ I decided to try Samsung again for the first time since the Galaxy 3.
The S10+ is definitely very good in many ways but if Samsung were forced to compete head to head with Huawei and Xiaomi in the United States it would be impossible to justify the $1000 list price it cost at launch.
When compared with Huawei, Honor and Xiaomi devices the S10+ should be a $600 phone--possibly $700 at launch.
But since Samsung has nobody to compete against in the United States other than One Plus and Google Pixel $1000 doesn't seem nearly as inflated as it should.

Last paragraph spot on.

It was announced today that the Note 10 might feature an AI assisted camera which supports what I was saying earlier about the Samsung camera lagging behind its competitors--both Huawei and Xiaomi added that functionality to the cameras in their flagship phones 2 years ago.
But since Samsung doesn't have to compete against Huawei or Xiaomi in the United States a lot of people here will think Samsung is being innovative.

LG G6 in 2019

Hello,
is it worth to buy G6 in late 2019?
the specs okay for me but I am worried about updates. it's still running older android 8.
how stable are custom ROMs and chances of getting pure android 9 or lineage os ?
also, what are the other things like/dislike about this phone?
Love everything about it!!
Matt

I had one and just upgraded to a Galaxy S9. The LG G6 is a great phone. Don't get too hung up on whether or not Pie will arrive as Oreo is a totally adequate operating system.
LG have improved the flow of security updates, mines currently on April 2019 and we might get Pie - but I'm not holding my breath.
I was thinking of upgrading but the closest I could find for sensible cost was the pixel 3a, so have decided to stick and just replaced the battery.
Main issue I have with the G6 is the cameras, which are average at best and often disappointing due to the over processing of images.
Skip the g6 and go for v35thinq.

Why are you not using the GCam? There's fully working normal and wide can support and million times better over the stock cam?
I loved my G6 but now over 2 years old I found it lackluster and just kinda slow. Upgraded to one plus 7 pro and OMG what a world of difference. Mostly not cause one plus but mostly cause the snapdragon 855 of course.

I've got GCam, the images are sharper but still doesn't come close to other flagship phones of the same era - LG were just really cheap with the rear cameras and it shows.

I'm not sure about that my G6 again 2+ years old for sure beats the gs8 as far as point and shoot goes for sure. But yes the G6 is the last LG phone I'll ever buy sadly as I like to be different and stay away from Samsung. Luckily one plus 7 pro works perfectly on Verizon

After the camera update in spring I started to take more pictures with the G6 than with the P20 Pro (my other phone). So I think the camera is the best thing about this phone now. And the quad dac if you have it.
