Quick charge - Asus ZenFone 3 Questions & Answers

Hi all,
i have a Zenfone 2 (ze551ml) and a Zenfone 3 (ze520kl) .
With the Zenfone 2, using a quick charge adapter, the phone tells me that the quick charge is in progress (in the battery icon appears a "+" sign).
with the Zenfone 3 the behaviour is different: the phone doesn't give any indication about the charge (if normal or quick charge): no "+" signs, no indications at all.
Is it normal?
Thanks,
toomax

It's supposed to be officially compatible Quick Charge 3, as Qualcomm says on the PDF you can download here https://www.qualcomm.com/documents/quick-charge-device-list
Anyway, I bought a QC3 wall charger, but it's still very slow. I just asked Asus about it (because for my work and lifestyle, I REALLY need it), as soon as they answer my question, I'll let you know.

According to the Brazilian ASUS reps, the Zenfone 3 (ZE552KL)does not support Quick Charging after all. Even if the chipset supports, the power IC needs to support it too, and there are other components that needs to comply with QC 3.0, which is not the case in the ZE552KL.
As far as I'm aware of, the only phone of the Zenfone 3 line that officially supports QC is the Zenfone 3 Deluxe.

this is what i found by observing my phone (ZE520kl) Ma current with 3c battery monitor.
swap each combinations below every 10 minutes
change 3c monitor batterer to real-time record.
-Zen3 cable and zen3 adapter : +- 2050Ma
-Zen3 cable and QC 2..0 adapter : +- 1035Ma
-Zen3 cable and ordinary xiaomi power bank : +- 1680Ma
my old Zenfone 2 phone = zen2 cable + QC2.0 adapter : +- 2650Ma (0-60%)
Q.C (1 and 2) is not working (not sure Q.C 3.0)

According to Asus France too. Just got the mail, the Zenfone 3 ZE552KL does not support QC. I will mail Qualcomm to indicate their error on the website. It's a pretty big error !

Not really.
The Zenfone 3 is projected to be cheaper than the Zenfone 3 Deluxe. According to Brazilian ASUS Reps, this was made strictly to cut costs - otherwise the device wouldn't be able to be on par with the competitors on the price. Yes, this is a huge downfall from the Zenfone 2, but the 10W adapter can supply it fine.

Zenfone 2 (ZE551ML) Charging Analysis

HI Guys
Today we will do a charging analysis for Zenfone 2, Model: ZE551ML.
Zenfone 2 has a 3000 mAh Li-Polymer battery and support boostmaster technology, which is compatible with quick charge 2.0. and Qualcomm also list Zenfone 2 as supported device in their official site.
The model we test is ZE551ML, 4G/32G, We are surprising to see ASUS don’t include the fast charger in this model, just regular charger, here is the photo:
{

The standard charger just can offer 5.2V/ 1.35A. and ASUS includes a short usb cable ( about 0.9cm length) , see here:
and we test the no-load volt for the stock charger, see here:
Now we begin to test the total charging time with stock 5.2V/1.35A power adapter and usb cable. We have made our Zenfone 2 battery to 0% and here is the test result:
Time Battery level Volt Current
PM 1:34:00 0 4.9V 1.13A
PM 1:44:00 Battery is low, can’t power on to show the battery level
PM 1:54:00
PM 2:04:00
PM 2:14:00 23% 4.9V 1.13A
PM 2:24:00 29% 4.92V 1.12A
PM 2:34:00 36% 4.92V 1.12A
PM 2:44:00 43% 4.92V 1.1A
PM 2:54:00 49% 4.92V 1.1A
PM 3:04:00 55% 4.92V 1.1A
PM 3:14:00 61% 4.92V 1.1A
PM 3:24:00 68% 4.92V 1.1A
PM 3:34:00 74% 4.92V 1.1A
PM 3:44:00 80% 4.93V 1.03A
PM 3:54:00 86% 4.97V 0.8A
PM 4:04:00 90% 4.97V 0.75A-0.55A
PM 4:14:00 94% 5.02V 0.38A
PM 4:24:00 97% 5.02V 0.32A
PM 4:34:00 99% 5.04V 0.2A
PM 4:41:00 100% 5.08V 0.16A
The total charging time is 3 hours 7 mins with regular charger, and you just can get 20% battery in 30 mins (PS: we found an interested thing, the zenfone 2 can’t be powered on if the battery is lower than 20%, i am not sure if it is my phone problem or you guys also have this problem?). After charging for 1 hour, we just get 36% battery, charging 2 hours, we get 68% battery, charging 3 hours, the battery is almost full. The Charging current will become smaller as the battery growing. but max, you just get 1.13A. Here is a photo we take when we test:
Frankly speaking, If we don’t test with quick charge 2.0 chargers, we might think the charging speed is OK, Most people might think they just leave the phone to charge overnight, and if it can charge full during the sleep, then it is ok. However, if you tried with quick charge 2.0 chargers, i thought you should change your mind.
Now we begin to test with our chargers and cable:
Test with Tronsmart WC1Q wall charger (Qualcomm Certified, support quick charge 2.0), and Tronsmart USB cable (20AWG support high current):
Time Battery level Volt Current
AM 8:45:00 0% 9.15V 1.65A-1.56A
AM 8:55:00 Battery is low, can’t power on to show the battery level
AM 9:05:00 27% 9.15V 1.5A
AM 9:15:00 43% 9.15V 1.5A
AM 9:25:00 54% 9.16V 1.32A
AM 9:35:00 68% 9.19V 1A
AM 9:45:00 77% 9.19V 0.87A
AM 9:55:00 84% 9.2V 0.62A
AM 10:05:00 88% 9.22V 0.39A
AM 10:15:00 92% 9.23V 0.28A
AM 10:25:00 95% 9.23V 0.17A
AM 10:35:00 98% 9.23V 0.16A
AM 10:45:00 100% 9.23V 0.14A
With our chargers and cable, we get zenfone 2 from 0% to 100% in 2 hours, When it detects Zenfone 2 support quick charge 2.0, our charger just give 9V volt instead of 5V. and you get 54% battery in the first 40 mins, and in 1 hour, you get 77% battery. (while with stock standard charger, in the same time, you just get half battery). Our chargers can give 15W power to zenfone 2 at first, while the regular charger just can give 5W. That’s a big difference. We also can see in the above table, while use our charger,in the whole charging progress, Zenfone 2 always get 9V high volt , but the charging current is becoming smaller as the battery growing.
We take a photo after charging a while with our charger to show the quick charge:
So from the above testing, we can see, use our quick charge 2.0 charger, you can save 36% total charging time , it can offer double battery level at the first 1 hour compare with regular charger. Like Qualcomm said, Less time charging, More time doing. And not just our wall charger, our quick charge 2.0 car charger also support Zenfone 2, you can get similar charging time when you use our quick charge 2.0 chargers.
In the end, Here is our suggestion to charge your Zenfone 2 faster:
1 If your zenfone 2 don’t equipped with a fast charger, just get one asap
2 Pick up some high quality usb cables, it do effect the charging, i take a photo to compare our usb cable and asus one:

currently there is no charger certified for Boost master technology ( intel's fast charging technology copyrighted brand name ).
But U can use any charger with 9V output.
I have the Aukey from Amazon, it is QC2.0 certified

It depends on yourself. If you want quick charge on your zenfone 2, then get a new charger.

Thanks for your reply. The reason i thought zenfone 2 support quick charge 2.0 technology is Qualcomm list them in their site, see here:
https://www.qualcomm.com/documents/quick-charge-device-list
In our understanding, quick charge 2.0 is not locked to qualcomm soc, they hope the other soc like intel or samsung to use their quick charge technology. We can see, samsung call themselves "fast charge" , and Motorola call themselves "Turbo Charge" , but in the end , they are the same as qualcomm quick charge 2.0. In qualcomm base smartphone, the soc, the PMU, the charger make the quick charge happen, in other SOC base smartphone, they use software to control the watt.
Intel might want to built its own quick charge technology, samsung also want, however, we have to admit , Qualcomm has the best quick charge technology right now. a lot of smartphone support this technology, and they even announce the quick charge 3.0 some days ago. check here.
So ASUS boost master technology can compatible with quick charge 2.0, it is a good thing.

Yes, that's normal. ASUS have different marketing skill for different market, they don't equip the quick charger in china market, but ask people to buy separate.
By the way, can you go back to normal charger once you use the quick charger?
and do you use any qc2.0 device in your car?
1: yes normal charger works. Why not?
2: Don't have qc for car. So never tried.
Works in the car

what are you talking about, the teardown of this phone shows that there's a separate IC for quick charge
http://www.asus-zenfone.com/2015/05/asus-zenfone-2-disassembly.html
SMB1357 is just qualcomm's off-die separate package IC for quick charging 2.0.
https://chipworks.secure.force.com/...u=QUA-SMB1357&viewState=DetailView&cartID=&g=
intel so far has no officially disclosed quick charge technology so Idk where you are getting all these info from. zf2 is compatible w/ all quick chargers because it has the necessary IC for QC2.0, otherwise it's not gonna pull more than 10W

Is there any custom rom to remove this limit? 1.1A is super slow.
I've been using this phone for past 3 weeks and I'd say that to charge phone this phone with official Asus normal charger takes around 2 hours and 40 minutes and takes same with power bank.

Don't know wich charger i have, my phone is ze551ml ww. But i noticed that after august update take too long for full charge. Sometime i charged phone with PC usb port, adb was always on so if before was taken 20m to full gain charge starting fro 65/70%. Now it take more then 30m, but is not the only thing i noticed, with stock charger seem qc is gone, another thing is, if you unistall clean master take very long too full charge, tryed other app like duBattery but not helped to reduce charging time. Well i will try asus fast charge, from my asus mobo and asus native software (only 1 usb port on the back pannel used for winOS poupose) but i think will take the same time 'cause no fastcharge support from zenui and i don't know how will safe for battery life if there's no support for overcharge, i mean no maintenance and optimitation charge.

dash charge on oneplus 2....!!!?

as i suffered around the internet looking for fast charge in oneplus 2.... people had two comments over this issue
1. oneplus didn't bought the liscense from QUALQUAMM for FAST CHARGING...!!
2. oneplus 2 didnt had the hardware support...!!
apart from this these things i also know that the cable and charger isn't enough for fast charging....!!
things to know:
1. cable isn't capable of delivering the necessary power for fast charging... check below
http://www.theverge.com/2015/11/16/9742360/oneplus-usb-type-c-cable-adapter
2. the charger that oneplus provided is a (5v , 2A) charger which common now a days
things that need to tested by the developers:
does the DASH CHARGER work on the oneplus 2..??
CONCLUSION:
If oneplus didn't had the license agreement of QUALLQUAMM QUICK CHARGE last year since due to the money issue or due to the delay of this DASH CHARGE tech which should have came by last year........!!! so now the company has the tech of its own.... so why cant they give an update to the oneplus 2 and allow users to use DASH CHARGE...!
" dont say that ONEPLUS 2 dont have the hardware things.... it has it...."
"IF ONEPLUS give the DASH CHARGE to ONEPLUS 2 over an update it gonna stand till"
i had the same thoughts !! let me have a look at kernel sources released for oneplus 3 ! may i can make it work !
thanks ! will report back soon ! for both hardware and software updates !
How do we know the USB-C port hardware on the OnePlus 2 is designed for 5V/4A? It might be designed only for 5V/2A in which case, using 4Amps will kill the port entirely and ruin the device. Design decisions like these are thought out months before production.
Dash Charge is basically OPPO's VOOC Charging.
The major difference in the USB C port being, is that it contains 7 pins, instead of the standard 5 pin layout. There are two extra power pins. That is why it requires both the adapter AND the cable, while Quick Charge 2.0/3.0 can work with any cable.
So no, it is not going to work with Oneplus 2. It's not a software feature that you can just enable.

There is nothing like what you are saying.....!! It's a software update and a hardware change which is changing the charger and the data cable.... check out the power delivery of the qualquamm quick charger vs the oneplus 2 charger.....
Yes it's a software and a hardware change.
Change your current hardware (phone) for a hardware that support quick or dash charge.

what will happen if i charge my one plus 2, whose earlier charger was 5V and 2 Amp and now dash charger is 5V and 4Amp. will it damage my phone.
I have tested the dash charger with the OnePlus 2. Nothing spectuacular happens besides the fact I have topped 2 amps for the first time using the Dash charger. The OnePlus limit for charging is 2 amps. Usually I get 1,2 - 1,8 amps on a regular 2 amp charger. The OnePlus 2 charges a little bit quicker and more stable with the Dash charger, but thats about it. Don't ever expect the same speed as on the 3 and 3T.
Charging current depends on battery level you only get 2A at nearly empty level then drops little by little

Do any Redmi 3S versions support quick charge 3.0 ?

Unlike redmi 3 , 3S models are powered by a SOC that supports quick charge 3.0 but there is no mention of it in the phone specs
Yes, it unofficially supports QC 3.0
unofficially? It seems strange that they wouldn't advertise it but in any case ... are you saying that with the appropriate charger this device will charge fully within the hour? Have you tried it yourself?
I dont think it supports qc 3.0 cause if it had supported it xiaomi would have said that and its price would have been higher as hugo stated in redmi note 3 launch event that they have to pay some extra money to qualcomm to activate qc 3.0 and that they did not put qc 3.0 to keep the device cost low so in my opinion they did the same with redmi 3s to keep its price low they did not put qc 3.0. Instead there maybe qc 1.0 or 2.0
If the SoC supports QC 3.0, it doesn't directly mean the device will support it. It's like saying, SoC supports 21MP camera, so device must have it. lol.
BTW, if 3s had supported QC 3.0, then Xiaomi would have marketed it nicely. You know, how good they're at marketing.
Really missing QC3. It would have made charging time much lesser.
I understood that it would have it and ordered power bank and charger that supports QC3. They charge it approx. 40%/hour, and Ampere shows it taking 2A/5V. Does this mean it supports it? I don't know
One thing also is that my charging cables aren't high quality so they might be restricting it.

Yes with custom kernel we can achieve charging speed as fast as that of Qc 2.0 but not 3.0 . But still we need a good developer for that.hope we get one.
No.. Doesn't support quick charge officially
According to this video it charges in ~2 hours 30 minutes with a quick charge 3.0 enabled charger vs ~3 hours with the included 5V 2A charger.
https://youtu.be/5eASPZ70Sws
Looks like it already support at 6least QC2 standard as volatge upto 9v are achiEved by qc 3 charger .
Though soc support qc3 but I think we need a custom keral to support qc3
With qc 2 or 3 charger a depreciation of half hour charging time is achieved already as shown in video link above. With custom kernal another half hour with qc3 charger will not be difficult
I think this device has great future as developer favorite device

Xiaomi does not want anyone to unlock its bootloader. They made it over complicated.I don't think they will release unlocked bootloader ROM even though device specs are good.

which rom do you have ?
you have official rom or unofficial ? (if you have unofficial just don't ask , of course you can't unlock with this rom)
if you have official , i think (well i don't remember exactly) is that you must (or is just better) switch to dev rom for the unlock , not stable
No. Xiaomi maybe cost down something.
The reason they're not advertising QC3.0 support is they'd have to buy the license to do so. And since this is a budget series of phones, they have to cut the expenses as much as they can. I tested it with a QC2.0 charger, and the phone charged at 9V, don't remember the amperage, though. So it supports at least QC2.0.

Quick Charge 2.0 by Qualccom

Our snapdragon 410 supports quick charge 2.0, is some hardware limitation in our device that dosn't allow to charge at a higher speed? the battery needs to be compatible? etc

Our battery only receives 5V/1A.
You need a 1.5 Ampere Quick Charge enabled charger to use that feature.
Xiaomi ships two kinds of chargers with the Redmi 2 ( based on region) : one is a 1.5A QC2. 0 charger and one is a 1.0A QC charger.
If you're looking to buy one, I'd recommend Microsoft Fast Charger
It can be enabled through kernel modifications.
As Redmi Note 3 has got the feature through Franco kernel.

Warning for fellow Note users.

Hello guys.Today i had my Redmi Note 3 Pro repaired , because a chip/module (that is responsible for charging) burnt down.
To avoid this:
1.Lower your charging rate (stock 2000 mAh).And yes , i was using stock rate.
2.Use only original charging adapter. And yes i was using charger and cable out of the box.
3.Try to avoid gaming while charging ,because the phone heats up so hard, especially screen.
I was using Resurrection Remix OS ,but im not saying it is responsible for this cause.
And here is some additional information from georgek1 on miui forums
For those who don't know here are some things about QC and Xiaomi Redmi series.
Quick Charge (QC) is a patented technology by Qualcomm (the company behind the Snapdragons processors) which allows phones to be charged faster. Quick Charge comes in 3 versions (time values are for a 4050mAh battery) :
v1.0, released 2013, using 2.0A -> full charge in 2.43 hours
v2.0, released 2015, using 3.6A -> full charge in 1.32 hours
v3.0, released 2016, using 4.0A -> full charge in 1.215 hours
* QC 2 has backward compatibility with QC 1 and QC 3 has backward compatibility with QC 2 and 1.
Redmi Note 3 currently implements QC 1 or a similar Xiaomi-made technology that charges phone in 2A.
Quick Charge (in general) implementation requires a few things:
A processor capable of Quick Charge technology
An extra electronic circuit on the mobile motherboard
A Quick Charge capable/compatible charger + a good cable
Drivers (software) on Android ROM kernel
A license fee that is paid for every device sold with Quick Charge technology enabled
The most important thing is #1, the processor as is the base (heart) of the system. Redmi Note 3 Pro with Snapdragon 650 supports Quick Charge 3.0 as the 650 snapdragon is capable of this technology. But let's see all the requirements:
Snapdragon 650 supports QC 3 = OK
Extra circuit on motherboard = UNKNOWN (probably yes)
QC charger and cable = NO
Drivers on kernel = NO
License fee paid = NO
* Some people say about batteries. QC doesn't require any special designed batteries. It works with all batteries on the market. That is it's goa,l to implement faster charging with current battery technology.
OK now, drivers are missing 100% and it has already confirmed by author or RADON kernel (@Umang96). His words:
this kernel at present does not use any charging driver hacks, I did try adding charging hacks in past but they did not work well and seemed ineffective, thats why I decided to keep charging drivers stock (same as xiaomi). We still get 1700-2000mA charging rate with stock charger which is good enough. Also, I don't recommend anyone to buy QC2.0/turbo/fast chargers, I use the stock charger and cable only.
Although QC has been originally enabled by @Umang96 in RADON kernel, he has later remove it. That makes me feel that QC 3 or 2 implementation in Redmi Note 3 is not possible due to software/kernel (#4) missing drivers or due to lack of the extra circuit required in hardware level (#2).
Why Redmi note doesn't have QC by default? Here is my guess:
The extra hardware circuit on motherboard may cost around $1
The QC charger will cost like more because it includes a) an extra circuit inside the charger $1 + b) license fee paid to Qualcomm for every charger $3
At least $3-5 fee for Qualcomm for every device sold with QC enabled.
That makes an extra $7-10 on factory level cost. An extra $10 for million devices is a big number. Also, that factory costs will lead to an extra $20 value on the consumer which makes the phone more expensive for its category.
Also my final guess is that Xiaomi wants extra things enabled for "Mi" (the good series) of phones in order to separate them from the cheaper "Redmi" series phones.
It would be very nice if QC-enabled processor phones which has QC disabled by factory, to have an option (like an application) which will allow users to pay the licensee fee and enable the QC option. I would be more than happy to pay $10 even $15 with my credit card to enable QC in my phone.

QC2 and QC3 are 9V 1.5A usually, there is no 3.6A or 4A.
Latest radon supports QC.
QC works but it's not properly slowing down with usage and instead going up, that's why your charging port got damaged.
If using QC phone should be idle or used very lightly, if you plan on using the phone you need to charge with non QC charger.
Your answer is in your post itself:
Snapdragon 650 supports QC 3 = OK
Extra circuit on motherboard = UNKNOWN (probably yes)
QC charger and cable = YES ( I have QC 3.0 cable and charger and most people use it too)
Drivers on kernel = YES (use custom kernels to support it)
License fee paid = NO ( Does it really matter as an end customer? )

I've using QC from the day it was supported by the custom kernels like Radon and others. So far, there are no issues with the charging etc. My RN3 is 13-14 months old now as I got it the day it was launched.
End story: it's just bad luck.

This is what I have tried to say from the beginning. Now you explained it perfectly! Thanks.
