Lots of us are going from the Note7 to the V20. My wife wants to know the easiest way to transfer her apps and app/OS settings. She's used to using SmartSwitch, but it won't work on the V20. I'm hoping for root and will use Titanium Backup, but what can I suggest for her that's easy?
I've done similar research and found an app called Copy My Data in the play store. I haven't used it yet but may give it a shot when I get my V20 next week.
I have used My backup Pro in the past and found it effective.

LG has an app in the play store that wirelessly transfers all the files to the V20.

Doesn't android have a set up to transfer file from one android to another at set up?
The app called Copy My Data didn't say it transferred apps or app data. It just listed messages, etc, that already transferred via Google. If it moves apps and app data, it doesn't make that clear. We'll look for the LG app.
I would suggest Titanium Backup, but I don't know if it works going from one version of Android to another.
Helium backup
You install the app, then a component program on a PC. Plug your phone into the PC, open the app on the phone, then open the program on the PC. After that, you can backup your apps, app data, messages, etc to the cloud, Google Drive, internal, or external storage, etc.
The PC program is only used to give the android app special permissions to access app data. You literally just plug the phone in, then unplug it once the program says its done.

The LG app is running now. It seems to be good. You install the LG sending app from playstore on the Note7. Nothing needs to be installed on the V20. You just go to Settings|backup on the V20 and authorize the transfer. They seem to find each other and it's all quite simple. You can use WiFi, a USB OTG cable or transfer by saving to an sd card.
Edit: It just finished. Wife says WooHoo! I guess she's happy.
My wife used the same app from LG too. Used it with the OTG adapter that came with the Note 7 box
I used it yesterday to transfer. Works really well and was pretty quick. Took back my note today so so sad.
Does the LG app transfer app data as well? or apps only like samsung smartswitch?
In the past with samsung phones I used smartswitch first, then helium to restore app data.
The LG app did not transfer app data, as far as she can tell. For example, it did not bring over ES File Explorer favorites.
I'm using https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.app.managerfree to copy the APKs to my SD card then will plug in my card to the new phone and install that app first and then install that apps from the SD card will be a lot faster that way. Trust me.

You need to connect your phone to computer , and use the Android phone transfer app (You can use whatever you think of as a good application )

Without SD card, how do I move all the things like music, apps and other stuff from the N1 to the NS?
I suppose I can't use the mybackup app...

The Nexus S will mount USB storage to your laptop the exact same way that the Nexus 1 does.
You can plug both into USB, mount the storage, then drag and drop what's on your external SD card that you want to copy over from the N1 to the NS. Quick and easy. It's what I did with my NS; and allowed me to hand pick what I wanted to transfer over rather than bring along all the clutter and garbage from my SD card that was left behind from old programs I don't use any more.
Apps and settings are just showing up for some people because of the sync restore option with Google server if you enable it on both devices. Didn't for me, though.
appbrain is a good way to get all your apps over, but it won't get your settings and app data.
If you're N1 is rooted and you're happy rooting the NS then titanium backup is a quick and easy way to move over your apps whilst retaining all the user data. (Rooting both phones is cake and can be fully reversed)
In addition, something like sms backup and restore works nicely for SMS messages.
Any other settings will have to be re-applied manually but contacts etc will sync down no problems.
If you're not rooted then your new apps should sync back from market anyway (you may need to ensure data backup is checked on your N1 - can't remember)
As the chap above mentioned though, the NS internal storage mounts as a USB mass storage device anyway so music/any other data can be copied over easily.
I did it via TITANIUM BACKUP
1 click of a button and everything was there
the only thing i had to copy & paste manually were the MP3 and Videos
having both phones connected via USB (through a PC)
just drag and drop the stuff from one phone to another phone
I did this drag and paste but for some things did not work. For music and pictures it worked well but for an example I have Color Note which I was able to drag over. Color Note is an application that allows you to take notes. After dragging and pasting it I went into my Nexus S and was unable to find Color Note. I also was unable to find Astro. I bought Astro Pro and downloaded that as well. After downloading it I was unable to find Astro Pro on my Nexus S In Market it tells me it is installed and it does so under applications as well when I go to settings and then applications but I can not find it nor open it

Titanium's great if rooted. I would be cautious with Titanium, though. Make sure to only restore APPS data/settings. Not sure you want to be restoring SYSTEM settings from one device to another, let alone one version of Android or another. I've seen people report issues restoring settings from just one ROM version to another.
As long as he doesn't restore EVERYTHING then it is safe

I have a wifi 10.1 that suffered an accident. The screen is shattered in the corner and only half the digitizer works.
I had never rooted or customized this tab, but I need to see if there is a good way to copy app data off of it.
Are there any tools that would let me input from my desktop or other android? Any good non-root tools for backing up the data that I could restore to another machine? I am used to Titanium and removable SD cards on my other devices.
if the screen is usable and you need specific files to take off, an app that i use is called Software Data Cable. It essentially creates an ftp like server with the wifi connection and you can browse your tab that way picking and choosing which files you want.
If you can use it this way then you can make a titanium backup and then just copy over the file onto your desktop so you can restore it onto your future tab.
Unfortunately, I can only think of apps that require root to be able to broadcast your devices screen onto your computer screen and use it that way. Sorry.
Okay, thanks very much for the advice. Only half the digitizer works, but with some contortions I might be able to get Titanium installed. Will it be able to make a proper backup without root though?

I remember titanium backup having a free non root app but I cant seem to find it anymore in the play store.
However there is a backup app that I use called MyBackup (well I use the Pro version of the app) which works well for non rooted devices. Although if I recall it asks you to restore each app individually but as for the backing up process it should be pretty straight forward.

I just recently switched from iphone to android. On iphone if you format the phone you can restore all your apps/texts/ and data. Well i thought android would have this built in by now but when i went back to stock(from rooted and twrp), it deleted all this information but then offered to recover from backup. So i did that and it downloaded all my apps again but it didnt have the data for the apps. It was as if i just installed them. Also texts werent saved. Is this normal? Am i required to use an external app?
Yes, this is normal since Android doesn't have a good built-in backup system in place yet. Apparently, this is supposed to improve in Android N.
For the time being in Lollipop, some app settings are backed up to your Google Drive. You can check to see which ones support this by opening up the Drive app, go to settings, and then click on Manage backups. However, this too is inconsistent because the author of the app decides what kind of settings the app will back up.
For the time being, it can be best to use third party apps. Titanium Backup is a popular one but it requires root for certain functions. SMS backup & Restore is a good app for texts.

Go to Play store and download the LG Backup (sender) to your current phone(old device)
Open the app, select how to transfer (probably wirelessly) on the V20 go to LG Backup - receive data and then hit start on the old device.
Is LG Backup preferred over Helium for non-rooted phones? I have never done this, go from a non-rooted Note7 to a non-rooted V20 (likely my plan next week).
I need to know what the best course of action is for doing this, Tap&Go, Helium, or LG Backup. I want as little setup to be required on the new device when I get rid of my Note7....
I feel like this should have been perfected by now considering whenever my girlfriend gets a new iPhone, she has all her apps and app data transfer over without hesitation, all the way down to whatever level she was on in Candy Crush (ugh) without using any type of login to the game itself to know that via cloud backup or other. I've never used Helium before but I started using it last night for backup and it appears it might go smoothly, I just don't know about restoring just yet.
My V20 is supposed to be delivered today. My plan is to use the LG Backup to transfer apps, then Helium to transfer most of the app data. There are some app that Helium can't backup but most of them just needs a login/password to get back up and running.
edit: batch restoring with Helium is usually not as smooth as the backup part. I normally would get random errors that Helium has stopped during restore. But when you open Helium again after the error, you can see which apps restored and which apps didn't so you can manually restore individual ones.
I just used LG backup. So far everything looks good. I did take a Helium backup of the app data in case I find something missing.

It looked to me to be about the same as smartswitch, but I have not yet really dug into what it copied. I know for sure it copied apps, photos, and SMS. It spent quite awhile copying "personal data" which I am assuming is app data.

I read that it does not copy app data. Personal data is probably stuff you put in the internal storage.

The amount it copied under that was 4gb after zipping. That is a lot more than my files. Particularly since all my photos and videos were on the SD which I had physically moved to the V20 before running LG Backup. That is why I am thinking there had to be some app data in that.

LG backup is so slow and error-prone because data transfer size is so big. It zip files and send over BT(?)

You are right. Much easier on an iPhone to transfer to a new iPhone. Android sucks when getting a new phone although Google tried to make it a little easier in the Pixel.
Currently I have the LG G5 on my line. My wife's line has an upgrade so I took the V20 on that. I will be taking the V20 (way too much power for her ) and putting the LG G5 on her line.
Can you guys tell or point me to how I can transfer the apps on the G5 to the V20 if that is even possible?

LG has a transfer tool to do this. Keep in mind, it will transfer the apps, but not app data so make sure you backup the app data to restore on the V20

I see Backup and reset in general settings.
Under Google backup it says will auto restore to my gmail account when reinstalling an app, restore backed up settings and data. Is this app data?
There is also LG Backup and I can transfer data to new device wirelessly. I wonder if this would transfer my apps and apps data.

It will transfer apps, but not app data so backup your app data(if the app ahs the ability to backup) to a cloud service like dropbox or drive
The way I did it was backup MY G5 first. Through Google and LG built in tool. Then I used both to transfer data over to the V20. Worked great.

I had a G5 for two weeks until this game out (in place of Note 7) and did the backup data to SD card and restored from SD card on the v20 and all of my data was still there. To be honest I was shocked because without out rooting and TB I have never been able to move the app data.
Are you sure LG Backup doesn't transfer app data? I've used it on my G3 and G4 and I feel like it does....

Simply use LG Backup and transfer apps and app data from LG A to LG B.
This is a way to share apps among G4, G PAD II 10.1, and G Pad X 8.0.
System settings may not be transferred among the devices though.

LG Mobile Switch is the tool you need for transferring data to a new LG phone.
LG Backup does transfer app data. You get a host of choices for how to transfer the data, from a file on the SD card to wifi direct. Look under Backup & Reset in Settings. Very simple to use.
