Nexus Users

Do you guys think there'll be a surge of orders from Nexus users who don't want to upgrade to a phone as big as the Nexus 6?
The new Moto X is the closest to a Nexus phone now (not phablet).

I think it's more likely that they stick with the Nexus 5 and pray Google comes back down to earth next year. I can't imagine that releasing a 5.9" phone as your one and only is going to pay off.

Yeah, I think the Moto X might pick of a few Nexus users (myself included) if the next Nexus device really only offers a 6" screen. But I suspect the reasons people want a Nexus device go deeper than that. The 1st Gen. Moto X got almost no development. If you want the roms and the hacks and all that, nothing is like the Nexus (and the Moto X is far from 2nd runner up, in terms of amount of development). So the near stock rom on the Moto X is a bit of a mirage. I'm still not sure I'm ready to make the jump and lose out on the development options (as well as the increased control and potential privacy offered by something like Cyanogen, over any manufacturer maintained rom).
Also the price on the Nexus has always been at least $100 lower than what a Moto X goes for. That's going to be a big deciding factor. Nothing talks like money.
But for people who aren't into the roms and just like the stock Android experience and don't care about price so much, maybe some of them will jump ship from the Nexus.

Severely doubt a 5.92" screen... 5.2" is more likely. Otherwise, the other released and confirmed specs look good. Just depends on battery life for me.

Literally everything is pointing to a 5.9" screen. No one is even acknowledging that a 5.2" device is even in the works any more. More likely the 5.2" phone everyone was talking about was the Droid Turbo.

Are the Nexus 5 and Moto X using the same size sim?

Yea cause I'm most likely one of them. I think the better speakers is what I want most. Weak speakers is the only thing I don't like about the Nexus

I hope I don't offend some people, but it seems a sizable percentage of Nexus people look down on the Moto X because they think it's an overpriced stock Android phone and think it cost too much. This is also true with OPO users. They think just because a phone use stock Android it automatically worth less. They don't take in consideration the difference in hardware design and add-on features. I just think installing CM on the X just take away all the great things about it.

I was a Nexus 4 user, and why I got the Moto X is because my n4 was dying on me. Also, it's a nice phone, and the added hardware and software tweaks is worth enough for the price imo. I just want a clean stock experience, and that is why I like both the Nexus and Moto X

Nexus user here - owned every Nexus phone since the original. I've picked up a Moto X simply because this year's Nexus is too large. But I agree with the analysis here - the X is a good substitute, but it isn't quite the same thing and I hope we won't see any negatives from that. If we don't get L pronto I will be complaining all over Twitter :crying:

I bought the nexus 5 first and the moto x after but sold my nexus 5 and used the moto x exclusively. My wife got a new iphone so now i'm using her nexus 5.
Things i like since moving to the Nexus 5
larger crisper screen.
snappier performance (very noticable) whether in games, browsing, and using google now voice commands, everything just comes quicker and faster.
willingness to take more pictures because it has a better camera
Things i REALLY miss from the moto X
Active display. LED light from N5 doesn't cut it for me anymore
Touchless controls. I can't wake my phone from sleep. I don't use it much but when I want to I can't with the N5
--mics Moto's mics are awesome. I don't have to raise my voice like I do with the N5 when using the OK google command.
* on the N5 i have the google voice detection turned on for all screens and it drains the battery a little more. When plugged in, i leave the screen on so I have somewhat of touchless control.
Speaker - The moto's speaker is super loud compared to the N5.
Moto Assist - I use "AGENT" for the N5 but it's just not the same. The text reading and replying is very similar but with the Moto's mics the experience is better on the moto, but agent works very well as an alternative. Incoming calls aren't read out loud to you in Agent but they are in Moto Assist. AGENT relies on connecting to a trusted device in order for drive mode to come on while moto assist is able to detect when you're driving even w/o connecting to the trusted bluetooth device.
Battery life - i consistently get an hour more of SOT time with the moto over the N5 with just about the exact same type of usage.
There are a few other quirks between the two but these are the major ones for me.
The Moto X 2014 seems to blend both of these phones together and that's why I'm really wanting it, despite the battery life complaints. If it's equal to or greater to the moto x 2013 I'll probably get it. ESPECIALLY if the moto nexus doesn't have the moto tweaks. I doubt it does but i'm holding onto that small sliver of hope it does. These moto enhancements are very very very usual and i wish Google would bake these into Android but then Moto wouldn't be as unique any longer.

Dynamic Notifications is a nice substitute to use on the N5.
The N6/X at 5.9" is too big.

My take on it is that Motorola provides the nearest to Nexus experience (aside from GPE editions), with some extras in the sensors/software. The new Moto X is of the same hardware generation as the Nexus 5, so I think most will stick with the 5 unless they want a larger phone, and those will go to the 6 (which is about 1/2 generation newer if we believe the Snapdragon 805 [I almost called it a dragonball - now that will show my age in the mobile chip world] rumor). The phone jumpers will end up trying both the X and the 6, and may end up back at the 5.
I've been scratching my head between a Nexus 5 and Moto X to replace my work-supplied blackberry (company started to support Android in August) and think I am about to pull the trigger on the X. I thought about the M8 GPE, but holding both the new X and the M8 yesterday, the X definitely won out in-hand.

It's actually has some better features but it was ugly to look at from an angle since the n5 doesn't have the best viewing angles. Plus the turn screen on when pulling out of the pocket didn't work as well as the moto. Another feature I really like. Saves that power button.

Also, the battery drain will be a little bit more since the n5 screen is LCD. Having an active display like feature is made for amoled screens if you want to conserve battery

I'm considering the Moto X but I am waiting to see if a root method (an prefereably an easy way to unlock the bootloader like the first gen Moto X) appears for the non-pure edition devices. If that doesn't happen by January, I may just have to rock a stupidly huge device. Being able to root and customize/backup/automate to my heart's desire is the most important feature of a phone to me. Second is stock Android and fast updates (so obviously the Moto X meets that).

For those of us on Verizon who have suffered through the Galaxy Nexus' shortcomings (late / no updates) and the fact that the N4 and N5 weren't available on VZW. ---- the new MOTO X is really the only reasonable choice. Just ordered mine on Sunday to replace my ancient Galaxy Nexus. I'm hoping it is "pure enough". I do need someone to gain root though....

I know. Almost 3yrs at this point. But what was I gonna do? We have unlimited data on our two phones, and get a nice discount through my wife's work. And she travels in places like Kentucky and West Virginia so the Verizon coverage is a big deal. If it was just me I would've switched to T-Mobile already. So, considering that....what could I do but keep the Galaxy Nexus? I couldn't stand Samsung's crapware etc, and nothing else interested me. The new X is the first thing that seems like a real option.
I hope it lives up to my expectations.
My wife is still rocking a Motorola Droid Razr. If you think the Galaxy Nexus struggles to function now you should try her phone....she gave up before me, and she still uses a Blackberry Curve for work.

Why I chose the Nexus 5x over the Moto

I recently purchased a Moto X Pure, and within 4 days knew I made the wrong decision. I'll list below the reasons I returned the Moto X Pure and why I'm buying the nexus 5x.
Why I'm return the Pure Garbage™:
•Lcd Lights- Distorts screen at night. Very obvious placement.
•Battery Life-poor. Gets too hot to use while charging (my next point)
•Heat- gets VERY hot with normal usage. Can't use while charging.
•Camera- 21mp? I get the same quality with my daughter's Nintendo DS..
•Weight- uncomfortably heavy + sweaty hand from heat + Rubber Back = disaster waiting to happen
•THICK..Call it a BBC. (Big Bulky Cellphone! Get your mind or the gutter!!)
Why I chose the Nexus 5x:
•Camera - 9mp less but 100x better. Laser autofocus.
•Screen - Both LCD, but after countless viewing reviews, the lights aren't eyesores.
•Fingerprint- so convenient!!
•Accessories- Nexus has a much larger following. Last 3 Motorola's were hard to find cases for.
•Updates- for obvious reasons
•BOOTLOADER- IMPORTANT!! If you had plans on getting to the Moto X Pure and unlocking it, you're sacrificing your warranty to do so. Google allows you to unlock your phone and keep your warranty.
What I lost out on in the switch:
- Removable memory - 32g is plenty. I have 128gb card in my G3 that doesn't get used
- 5.7 inch display - Too damn big anyways. The LG G3's 5.5" is pushing my upper limit as far as screens go. Learned on the Moto that 5.7" is a two hand phone, unless you have ogre hands.
Did anyone else choose between devices and get this one? If so what device and why?

That was one of the phones I was looking at as an upgrade from my first gen Moto X. The big factors for me were an unlockable bootloader, vanilla android, regular updates, and the ability to use any carrier. I was hoping for a 5" phone at the most, but 5.2" is okay so far. I don't think I could get used to a 5.7".
I wasn't expecting to care about the fingerprint sensor, but now that I have it, I love it! Was concerned about battery life, but no problem at all getting through the day so far.
The active display (whatever they call it) stinks on this compared to the X. Not a big deal, though, as I have a Pebble, and it's so quick to unlock.

I'm a huge fan of moto, having had the last two moto Xs. I could deal with the garbage cameras because it was nearly pure Google, the size was manageable, customization is boss, and it felt like a quality phone that didn't need a case to be sturdy as hell. The size of the nexus 6 and 6p is what deterred me from them. The 5x is a nice phone with some awesome features and decent battery life but the performance on my 2014 was better (subjectively) and I feel like I'm holding a phone that will break if it falls off the table. I've never felt the need to put a case on my motos unless I was going to the bar or camping, but this guy might need one 24/7

Came from a 2014 X PE as well. I would still be using it if it weren't for FI network. It's a shame that it doesn't work on it.
As far as the camera, the X got a bad rap. I had that thing taking some good shots. Never a complaint from me.
The display blows the Nexus 5x out of the water. So vibrant, punchy and draws your attention. So far everyone that's checked out my 5x immediately commented on how the display was grey, washed out compared to the moto X.
Moto X seemed faster at nearly every task compared to the 5x. This thing stutters all over the place. Moto has some really awesome features that once you use and lose, you miss...a LOT. attentive display, active notifications, chop flashlight, quiet time...moto really nailed it on the head.
Alas, I'll be keeping it. I went back to Nexus for FI, the battery is slightly better than the moto X which randomly shut off with anywhere from 8-20% still supposedly left.
Still love Nexus devices though, its a fun serviceable device.

OP is so incredibly biased in not even going to counter it. Mxpe is a wonderful device.

Nexus 5x can be used on any us cellphone carriers include project fi

I sat on the edge about the pure for a while. A few big things just glared at me.
First, The physical appearance of the pure just didn't match the 5x. It looked chunky and the front flash was just gross.
Second, although the pure will probably get updates fine, the 5x will undeniably be the leader of the curve.
Thank you for making me more comfortable in my decision, the SD card reader was hard to give up for those easy onsite backups and space for a mini rom archive, but I think I can handle the 32GB restriction, especially since T-Mobile allows free unlimited lte play music now.

I used solely Nexus devices from June 2012-March 2015. When I shattered the screen on my N5 I chose a Moto X 2014 Pure due to the size of N6. I actually ended up really liking the Moto, and probably would have went with the 2015 Pure if it hadn't grown to 5.7. As is I went N5X simply due to size. I do miss a couple features of the Moto, but overall am happy with the Nexus. Fingerprint sensor ended up being very convenient, I originally didn't care, but now don't want to give that single feature up.
And I really hate delays in updates, after using Nexus for so long, it was really frustrating waiting for my year newer Moto to update weeks after my original N5 had already received the update with its shattered screen and all.

I was selecting between the MXPE and the 5X, and chose the 5X because:
No Motomaker in Canada (would've purchased from the US though, knew exactly what colours/options I wanted )
MXPE not available in Canada (would've purchased from the US though)
It's too big, and heavy - as is the 6P (MotoX 2013 was the perfect size, MotoX 2014 was reasonable)
Due to their recent behaviour, I no longer trust Motorola to release timely OS updates (hopefully Motorola proves these fears to be false)
Unlocking MXPE bootloader voids warranty
No device can match the kind of support (both official and third-party) that a Nexus device will receive
I really wanted to get the MotoX this year, but the 5X was the better choice for me, by far. I love the feel and industrial design of the 5X (the top and bottom bezels are definitely larger than they ought to be though), I'm getting great battery life, the camera is excellent & fast, and I know I'll be able to get updates from Google for at least two years, and quite possibly beyond.
I've got a four year old Galaxy Nexus flying on Lollipop (with stable Marshmallow on the way!) thanks to the development community. Specifically Ziyan in this case. Not that I plan on using the 5X four years from now.

Coming from MX 2014 Pure (Germany):
- hated delayed Lollipop update (we got it 2 months after the USA)
- battery was subpar
- camera was **** especially in low light conditions
+ cool moto features but almost all of them are now incorporated into M
+ size was perfect
+ moto maker
The smoothness of 5X is much better than on MX 2014 PE. Battery is holding much longer.
I was considering MX2015 but:
- no fingerprint scanner (motorola got screwed in 2014 by apple buying that fingerprint company but for the 2015 models there is no excuse not to have it!)
- too big
- unlocking voids warranty (at least in 2014 model I could flash custom rom and here I don't want to wait for the "official" M update because it will most probably come much later)

I was considering a Motorola phone and even recommended the Moto G to people who asked, but with the acquisition by Lenovo and the abandonment of the Moto E after promising updates, I can no longer consider or recommend Motorola phones. I am pretty sure it will only get worse as time goes on and Motorola becomes even less Google and more Lenovo. I heard they were laying tons of people off.
Plus being able to unlock and relock the bootloader on the Nexus 5X and still having warranty pushed me over the edge. Also guaranteed updates for two years, and a great developer scene is likely.

Moto x is a phablet just like the nexus 6. I didn't want a phablet so I didn't consider the moto x.

Agree 100%. My last two phones were Motos, and they would have been my first choice for a new one, but I was suspicious after the sale to Lenovo and the recent debacle around their updates sealed the deal for me. To my knowledge Moto still has not articulated a firm policy regarding software updates and security patches going forward (it's possible I missed something, though, since I stopped paying attention once I pre-ordered the 5X).
The Moto E situation was particularly egregious. I know that if you read the fine print they probably complied with the letter of their advertising but the fact is that they tried to sell people on the idea of being the OEM to go to for updates and they completely violated the spirit (perhaps not the letter) of that advertising by providing only one incremental update and then dropping it.

Moto X Style definitely has a better screen than the 5X, also the video was a lot more stabilized than the 5X. Moto X Style has 2 front facing, loud, clear speaker, where the 5X only has one

How am I biased when I bought the Motorola first?
The Motorola had it goods, but the bad outweighed it.

I was sooo close to ordering the MXPE. I literally had my customized, Moto Maker'd device in the cart ready to check out when i started looking more into the 5x. Which from spec release until about 2 weeks ago I'd written off as my next device.
Then I spent some time researching and reading and researching, finally deciding on the 5x. Couldn't be happier. I've never had the MXP in my hands, but I'm in love with my Nexus, and the eventual development will be the cherry on top.
The size and weight of this thing is near perfect. The screen and speaker and sound on earbuds are nowhere near as bad as some may have made it seem.
I literally have 3 gripes about this phone. One major and 2 minor that aren't that big of a deal and I am already over.
1. No SD card. Pretty obvious.
2. 3.5mm jack is on the bottom. No big deal.
3. Bezels take up too much screen space, especially on the sides.
Honestly 2 and 3 never crossed my mind as a deal breaker. And no SD card I can live with, just need to steam my music instead of store it.
Sorry for the long rant, I just wanted to share I was on the fence between these two phones and couldn't be happier that I chose the Nexus.

The biggest reason is phone size. I wasn't interested in a large phone.
A second reason is that I don't really trust Moto anymore after my experience with a carrier Moto X 2014. Their builds were buggy and their update frequency and availability tapers off quickly over time.

What phone will you go to next?

The Pure is an awesome phone. It has been my favorite and could be perfect with a bit better battery life.
Time marches on and I can't say I am enthused with the new Moto line coming out. Also not sure about Lenovo.
It just doesn't feel right that Moto is no longer American.
So what are you folks planning on going to next?
I would love a stripped down Sony or HTC. Not keen on Samsung. Apple, only if they offer a model with stock Android[emoji13].

Samsung. Maybe de 7 Edge, great specs and battery life, Lately Samsung improves a lot system updates ( and i will buy unlocked)
Stock Android is great, but sometimes lack from cool features like theming, gestures etc. HTC m10 is option, but i dont know.
Other options are OnePlus 3 and the AXON.

Most probably a Nexus device.

Im waiting for a new nexus. 1+3 is good but not kicking my ass do a sold them after two Weeks and back to moto

Likely the smaller of the two new Nexus devices, provided the battery life/build material is comparable to the larger alternative. This also hinges on whether or not it'll work on all carriers, which I assume it will.

I have my eye on the Axon 7 but I been reading there is alot of bugs with it so far.... I almost pulled the trigger on a nexus 6p .

Definitely a Nexus. Probably in a year or two, I'm pretty good with my phone. Now if Lenovo doesn't upgrade this sucker to Android N then I might ditch it and switch early to the HTC-made Nexus Sailfish. But, I can't see the future so, who knows.

I'm thinking Nexus but I plan to stick with the Pure for at least another year or so. I might even go for another Moto phone. My main requirements will be that it has to be unlocked and no bloat (I actually like the few bashed on features the MXPE has). At the moment the Nexus and Moto lines meet this requirement. Only time will tell.

I also had an interest in the Axon 7 but as you say there are reports of bugs. I read one owner had issues with his Axon using 19% idle over night. Doesn't work with android pay either at the moment. Thankfully supplies are tight so no temptation to buy one in UK.
I have been considering a Samsung gs7 edge now price has eased. Just can't pluck up the courage to buy one. The glass back puts me off. Can't get enthusiastic about the new Moto Z phones and don't currently appeal. The new nexus phones when they are released may be worth consideration but I've never had any luck with HTC phones in the past.
So I'm stuck with the X Style which is no great hardship! Battery generally lasts the day, the display is nice and bright when required, the speakers are very good and it just works day in day out. The one thing I do wish though is that it was 5.2" as it's just a little cumbersome to use one handed. But the big display is good for Web browsing and vids.
So I'll either stick with the X STYLE or at some point get a Samsung GS 7 Edge, but will see what the new Nexus phones are like too when released.

I'll probably pick up a 6p once the new Nexuses are out and people start flooding Swappa.

Le Max 2, Axon 7, 1+3 or a Nexus device (either the 6P or 2016 5" if it has a 821 and is under 400)

From the pick at the moment probably the Asus Zenfone 3 Deluxe, but not till I see how it fares in real reviews.
The new moto phones are a big step back from the pure for me.

maybe the moto z more likely the note 7 if it gets root pretty quick.
my pure seems to be developing issues as it nears the warranty date actually i think it just past that on the 18th of july and i have been having issues now for about a week...
And i have a used note 3 that still works great... has better battery life than the pure too...

New smaller Nexus. I want faster updates and more ROMs to choose from.

I honestly have no idea. I'm not enthusiastic about any of the new phones. Seems almost every manufacturer is reverting from a 5.7" screen to 5.5" which is a deal breaker for me. Also need root and I'm on Verizon which cuts my current, and future options down to just my current x pure, or a semi-rooted S7.

I am in the same boat brother lol, I have my Moto X pure for now ... the Edge body im not a fan but the camera is what i love on it. Prices are almost at 500 bucks here in usa for them so i might wait a bit more.

Honestly... I might go back to my Moto G 2015, this phone is great except the battery life. Going from 5+ hours of SOT per day to barely 3.5 is tough. Maybe a G4 or even wait for the next Nexus devices.

Well it looks like my Note 7 is heading back for a second time. With that being said. I don't want to sink another 800 on a phone while I wait for what ever version of the note comes out next. I think I'm going to either pick up NEW 64 gig pure with tax comes out to 370.00 Or some lightly used to new nexus 6p's around 400-450. So I understand the hardware differences etc. I have seen some people complaining about the lack of updates for the X. I'll be passing this phone down to one of kids, so I have some questions is the bootloader unlocked on these so we can tinker and get the latest updates before waiting for MOTO to release them. Also does anybody have any opinions on the 2 devices preferable if you have some time behind both. Thanks for the advice.

I think that the Nexus 6P is a better device.... But SLIGHTLY. I've owned both phones several times over the past year, and my honest opinion is that the Moto has more functionality than the stock 6P with similar display and speakers. The camera is also great! And by the way the battery was better on the Moto than the 6P for me. There were times that the 6P also felt too big for a 5.7 device, the Moto although same screen size is smaller overall. I also care for the expandable memory, either way you can't go wrong. I'm commenting on here because i was just on the same exact boat. I bought mine (Moto X) from Swappa for $220 with 3 cases and original box, the 6P I could've gotten for $320 but i just don't want to carry around a huge device anymore. I'm giving my Note 5 to my wife and rolling with the Moto X until the Pixel XL drops in price (6 more months). Until then I'm OK with the same specs and features as the 6P but at a smaller form and price. Good luck.

As a Moto X Pure owner, I honestly recommend you to buy a Nexus device. Lenovo is leaving behind the older Moto devices, we don't have the support we used to have under Google ownership... Also, while there are very good developers for this device, ROMs are far away of the ones for Nexus 6P (remember that that's a developers targeted device). Greetings!

moto doesn't bend

Owned both devices for a while, each being a daily driver at the time. Development is great for both, and I do miss the QC 2 on the Moto, but coming from an S5 (and a razr maxx before that), I'm totally a fan of the OLED screen which pulls me hard to the 6p. Performance increase of the 810 vs 808 is noticeable, but neither is a slouch and both handled my heavy load without much protest. If you have any more detailed questions about either, PM me.

Nexus Line

I wasn't sure where to put this thread so I decided to put it here because the Nexus 5x was one of the last devices of the Nexus line. The Nexus line meant a lot to me because I owned 4 Nexus products. A galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus Q. It makes me nostalgic. Does anyone still miss the Nexus Line? I am going to be so sad when they removed the 5x and 6p from the Google store .

I've owned 4 I believe as well. Nexus s 4g, Nexus 7 gen 1, Nexus 6 and currently I swap between a LeEco Le Max 2 and Nexus 5x. There is no experience like what you would get on those devices. Very nostalgic and a very tight community. These devices will definitely be missed when they are removed.

Motorola was the second closest thing to the Nexus line. I had a first generation x and third generation x. The first generation Moto x was like a Nexus. Those were nostalgic times. Lenovo ruined Motorola now. Motorola is inconsistent with their light skin. All of their phones have 7.1.1 and the weird icon pack except for the dialer and you can only enabled the battery percentage next to the icon on the z series and they removed moto maker. I also don't get why they have a 3gb variant in India and a 2gb variant in the states (for the base model 2gb of ram is terrible!!

The moto G5 plus is a great option. I was actually deciding between an ice blue Nexus 5x and a moto G5 plus. I'm consistently able to get 7 hours of sot and it's a great value but make sure you get the 64gb variant. It's nothing to do with the storage but it has 4gb of ram(the base model has 2gb of ram). This device is well supported but I'm assuming that Motorola is only going to push out one update because the third generation Moto g only got on update and the 4th generation wasn't supposed to get Oreo(only the plus is getting Oreo). It's pretty much a Nexus except it won't be getting monthly security patches.

I loved the shield tablet. I got the original one and it beat Google's support. It got a lot of bug fixes and stability updates. It also got updates all the way from KitKat to nougat. Nostalgic times.

I'm glad that Google came up with Android one. The moto x4 android one is like the new Nexus 5x. The Nexus 5x was a great phone but it should have had 2 instead of 3gb of RAM and a snapdragon 810. The ice blue color looked beautiful.

The Nexus line really died with the 5. I bought a Nexus 5X, but even that was when the prices started to climb. It wasn't horribly expensive, but it's clear other manufacturers can build phones with similar hardware cheaper. The Nexus line always had community support, was decent hardware, at a great price point. The Pixel really is none of that, it's Google wanting to be the next Apple, and failing. I've owned many Nexus devices, starting with the Galaxy Nexus, and ending with the Nexus 5X (with several in between). I have 6 Nexus tablets in the house (3 Nexus 7s, 3 2013 Nexus 7). With the release of the Pixel, I went elsewhere. We now have two Huawei phones, neither which I'm really impressed with, but they had official Lineage support. So perhaps next I'll try OnePlus? On the tablets I'm picking up Samsung T813/T713 to replacing the Nexus 7s 2013s as those have Official Lineage support.
I much preferred the ease of Nexus line, and the hardware. However I'm not going to support Google's current hardware strategy, much less there's not much development behind their new devices anyways. I haven't tried a Motorola perhaps I should try one of those, they've been releasing several phones that are affordable with impressive specs, with bootloaders that can be unlocked.

After decidedly poor Nexus 5X phone (with only 2GB of RAM in 2015, bootloop of death, poor charging, and a half broke Oreo update) and Nexus 9 with only 32GB of storage and no expansion card slot, I sure won't miss this line in future. Android still desperately needs a good selection of mid-range devices. Perhaps Huawei Honor or Oneplus will be it in future, but Huawei does have the reputation of using nonstandard skin and less developer friendly.

Don't buy a moto device if you are going to stay on the stock rom. Lenovo has ruined Motorola. I miss the time when there was only the g, e and x series and I remember getting the lollipop update on my first gen moto g a few days after my friend got it on his first gen moto x. Now Motorola is weird. They have so many phones the g5, g5 plus, g5s plus, g5s, e4, e4 play, z2 play, z2 force, x4 and x4 Android one. I don't know why they decided to turn the x series into a mid ranger. Also the z2 force is so expensive, has a small battery and a decent camera. Also all the phones are running different software. They are either running 7.0 or 7.1.1. It's not like they are all on 7.0 or 7.1.1. Motroala intended the g series to get 2 major software updates but Lenovo has decided to give it 1 major update and a few security patches. Lenovo bought moto when I had a g3. I was so hyped to get nougat but Motorola didn't give it. After I saw the g4 I thought it was a great buy but the phone was only supposed to receive nougat. The only reason why the g4 plus is getting Oreo is because it was accidentally written on Motorola's website that the g4 is supposed to get nougat and Oreo. The worst part is it's only the g4 plus and not the g4. I used to like Motorola until Lenovo bought it. The first 3 moto G, x and e phones were good and the moto x4(android one edition) and why did Motorola release the g5s series. I feel like Motorola is trying to make g5 owners feel bad. The g5s has a 5.5 inch screen and a dual camera. I can't say anything on the dual cameras but I wish I had a 5.5 inch screen on the moto g5s plus. Also it costs $400 but no USB C? Honestly a one plus 3t or 5 is a better buy. Motorola is headed down a dark path and the company is a mess. I might ditch moto unless the g6 comes with 4gb of RAM as the base model and has USB c. Motorola is headed down a dark path according to me. I might buy the first gen pixel XL or the next one plus. Is the Nexus 5X your daily driver and what color do you have. Quartz, black or ice blue?

Nexus is my backup phone to my company phone (various including galaxy s5, s7, and iphone). It's sad to see the demise of the nexus product family, but it's not surprising. The quality of the nexus line has been terrible and the support has been terrible. People put up with that because the phones were decent in terms of price and performance. Since google has is going down a different path (a dead-end path), hopefully other vendors like oneplus or nokia will take up where google abandoned nexus.
I'm currently using a 5x that I inherited from my son. It was brought back from the dead by getting a motherboard replacement under extended warranty when the original died due to the boot loop defect. Previously I used a 5, also inherited. This phone recently died due to the boot loop problem caused by the defective power button. The most common phone in my extended family is nexus 5, by far.
I really liked the clean simple design of the 5. I like that the 5X is larger, but the camera protrusion really detracts from the design. The 5 performed okay, but now that I'm using the 5X, I realize how slow the 5 was. If the 5X had more ram and a faster processor, it would be the perfect phone for me.
I can't relate to the obsession with "premium" appearance (i.e., metal and glass). Current flagship phones feel nice in your hand, but if you drop them, they are finished. So you need to put them in a case. In a case, all that matters is the display.
Google has dropped the ball so badly in so many ways. Pixel is a disaster. The phones are overpriced and have too many flaws. Google's quality control is garbage. Their support is garbage. They are mismanaging android, due to the fragmentation. As much as I hate apple and as much as I think ios is a mediocre OS, the one thing they have done right is keep the herd running the latest OS. I have the latest OS on my company 5s. This phone is older than a nexus 5 and it has the same OS version as the iphone X. Google abandoned the nexus 5, yet apple is keeping the 5s up to date exactly the same as an x. Things like this are why apple is eating google's lunch, but google is too stubborn and too stupid to see this. They don't support their own phones, so how can they expect the oems like samsung to keep their phones up to date?

Yes I agree in so many ways. Google used to be great. I remember so many people used to have Nexuses( or nexi?) back in the day but most of the people I know have switched to an OEM like Samsung or LG. One of my friends is a hardcore Nexus fan. He has had all the Nexuses except for the 6p and Galaxy Nexus. He currently has a 5x and I wonder what he's gonna do because he only likes stock Android. I'm not even sure where the pixel is headed. I still have my doubts about the first and second generation pixel. I don't even know why Google decided to add the edge sense feature. In the past the phone, charging cable and charging brick was made by the company who made the hardware of the phone and the software was always stock Android (no additional features) but for the pixel they are adding to the software with unique features. I also hate Motorola. I'm not a fruit fan but I gotta admit they are doing pretty good so far. Their devices are still supported and their geekbench scores are just amazing. I don't know what to upgrade to. I only want stock Android but there's no way I'm gonna buy a pixel(even if I have the money for it) and Motorola is headed down a dark path. Huawei seems like a great company (with their AI and machine learning which is impressive) but their software looks ugly. Their icon pack reminds me of the gingerbread days. I don't like TouchWiz and LG's UX seems sluggish (I still haven't gained their trust after the bootloop issue). I might buy a one plus 5t but I'm not sure. I generally buy mid range phones and I really wished I could have bought the moto x4 android one edition. I want to stay out of Samsung and LG mid rangers because there are so many of them, they have underpowered processors and they are most likely never gonna get any future updates. Also, they don't have a true mid ranger which rivals against other mid rangers like the g5 plus and honor 6x.

If you're looking for a mid-range android phone, there aren't a lot of options, especially if you like a "pure" android.
My son has a oneplus 5 and he likes it, except for the fingerprint reader and the camera, which he doesn't like at all. It's a decent phone and the 5t will be an improvement. The nokia 8 looks pretty nice and the nokia 9 should be an improvement.
Pixel doesn't interest me at all. The 2 XL is too large and the 2 is just a warmed over pixel. It looks like it's a couple of years old, which it basically is. It's a lazy poor excuse for a phone. I'm so disgusted with google, they would have to knock it out of the park before I would buy another one of their phones. Their service and support suck and their products are hardly impressive.
There isn't a lot of love for samsung, but I was happy with the GS5 and the GS7. I could be happy with a GS8 or GS9. The two things I don't like about samsung are touchwiz (which isn't nearly as bad as it used to be) and knox, but you can live with them.

Guess I'll chime in with a little something of my own.
Back before the 5X was released, everybody dumped on it because the 6P coming as well, the "superior" version. And, to an extent, everyone was right to do so. The 6P had superior specs in everyway. But I still went ahead and bought my 5X on launch and I was happy, for a time. Then, the boot loop happened. What's funny about that, is the fact that it was virtually unheard of (correct me if I'm wrong), until the issue became insanely widespread at the same time, more or less a year later. And then, it started happening with the 6P. I think a little less severe than the 6P, but still happening nonetheless. So I got my replacement, which Google honored even though the warranty was way out, and I continued to enjoy my 5X. Because honestly, this device was really good for it's time. But the truth is, that time was very short lived because shortly after the release of these devices, better things started coming out almost immediately and instantly the 5X felt dated. But! It was kept alive by the wonderful dev scene we have here.
With that being said, this phone is just past it's prime, and now we're in the Pixel era of the Nexus line, which just costs too damn much (and even have their own sets of hardware problems) so I'm looking to finally pass this phone on. I've been eyeing the 5T a lot since the rumors about it started. Snapdragon 835 processor, same as the recent flagships of this year, a decent camera that can hold it's own against the competition, a beautiful design (yes, whatever, it looks like an iPhone knockoff but I truly love that design), decent sized battery, fingerprint reader on the back where it should be. The 5T is ticking all of the boxes I'm looking for in my next smartphone upgrade. I don't really care that the screen isn't QHD or whatever because honestly, any screen is gonna be better than the 5X, so I'm truly not missing out on much. The only thing I know I'm gonna be upset about, is the sacrificing of first-in-line Android OS updates. No matter how much a company boasts about how near stock Android is on its device, there's always gonna be a wait for updates, rather than getting it immediately as soon as Google pushes it. That's something I'm gonna have to get used to, leaving the Nexus line. But at this point, the upgrade is well worth it.

Honestly I feel like the Nexus 5x would have been an awesome phone. I don't care if it's made of plastic, if it has a large camera bump and if it doesn't have a qhd display. If Google would have decided to put in the same snapdragon processor as the 6p and 3gb of ram, then it would have been an awesome phone. There's something about the color and design of the phone which I love. The ice blue color looks beautiful and honestly the black and quartz white. If it didn't have the bootloop issue and if it had the same specs as the 6p I would have bought it over my g5 plus which I currently own. The 808 was ok but my friend said that it could barely run Snapchat. I can't believe that the life time of the 5x is coming to an end. It felt like Marshmallow was yesterday. It's going to receive 8.1 and maybe a few security patches. I'm glad that Google decided to extend the time the 5x gets updates for. Honestly I feel like 8.0 is going to drain battery so 7.1.2 is what 5x users should stay on. I still can't understand why I love the design of the 5x so much. It's hard to look for a phone running stock Android and that gets updates first for a mid range(ish) price *cough cough pixel*.

The Nexus support officially kind of ended yesterday. Android P Dev 1 came out and the Nexus 5x and 6p don't officially support it.

Security updates, Nexus 5x and 6p will receive until Nov 18. After 5th Nov 2018 , bye bye official support. Thanks to 3rd party developers to bring us next version of android.
