I know it's far from a Note7 but for those seeking an fire retardant S-Pen phone this should be firmly in the running. If they somehow manage to strong arm me to get of the network with my Note7 I might just consider this option.
They still have a lot of work to do before that happens though.

That is what I moved to.. It's amazing seeing how little people use the pen, that it's so easy to move to another penless phone.. Makes you think and realize that most people probably only used 1/4 of it's functions, and shouldn't have had a note in the first place..

I use the pen a lot not only for notes and such but in general I like scrolling through and navigating pages a lot better with it. It's more accurate and I'm actually faster with it than my finger. It also makes me feel classy and professional... Sort of like when I choose to drink wine over beer lol.

Exactly.. Same here.. But if you decide to try the 5, be sure to keep your 7 pen tips, because they fit the 5 pen, giving a greatly enhanced writing experience..

After having the Note 7 I can't do without a pen. Spent some time with Evernote and Google Keep yesterday. They pale in comparison to the base functions of Note7. I work with my hands, greasy, gritty in all weather conditions except desert, which makes me pause buying the Note5. No choice but to answer the phone when it rings. That freaking Note7 is Boss.... I am a Note7 Clinger for now.

Need some extra convincing

Hello everyone,
As a student in college, I've been increasingly looking for productivity tools for note taking, solving problems, and general studying. While nothing can quite beat a paper and a pencil in absorbing information, I've found it incredibly expensive (and time consuming) to print out pages and pages of assignments and readings. On top of that, pages I printed in the past would get lost and I would also never look back on any of my written notes because everything was so disorganized.
So, as you may see, I'm looking for a paperless and organized solution and I figured some form of digitized tech would do the job. With the announcement of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 and its S Pen, I felt maybe this might be that tech for me. But even after reading through all the positive comments people have been posting about this tablet, I can't seem to be fully convinced to buy it.
To make this easier, I'm just going to number off some of my concerns and questions:
1. I'm afraid this might simply be a fad for such a great tech. I love tech and just judging from all the specs and reviews, it's an absolute powerhouse of a tablet which further benefits from its stylus, but is it really as useful as it seems or is this just something I'm going to use everyday for a week and forget about it?
2. Will this tablet be outdated and forgotten? Without a doubt, this is an obvious trend strongly prominent in tablets and smartphones. I accept the fact that whether I wait or not, this tablet is going to get outdated quickly in terms of raw specs, but there always seems to be that one device that continues to do well even around daunting competition. A good example in my opinion would be the Galaxy Nexus whose raw specs doesn't compare with the GS3 or any recent smartphones, but still has a very strong community support.
3. How do you utilize this tablet in your daily lives in terms of productivity? Any specific stories regarding note taking, studying, and problem solving? I know a good number of you use this for business meetings but I have yet to experience that kind of environment. I'm just a college student studying in a dorm or library.
4. How similar is the S Pen to a normal pencil or pen in terms of feel? I generally use either a normal wooden pencil, a heavy mechanical pencil, or one of those cheap stick pens. How does the S Pen feel compared to them?
5. It'd be greatly appreciated if there's anything else that would convince me to buy this tablet.
Anyway, I know this is a long post that could be answered by simply testing the tablet myself, but there are just some factors right now preventing me from actually going out to a local best buy to play with one.
A big thank you to those who answer! I just don't want to waste my money on stuff I end up not using!
This is a great bit of tech and will serve you well as a student taking notes. The pen writes very quickly with zero lag. There are numerous apps such as Lecture Notes to choose from.
As far being obsolete soon, well you can pretty much count on it. Yesterdays beast is today's slowpoke when.it comes to tech. That being said this is Samsungs flagship product. They are encouraging devs to create for the s pen. Even if something faster comes down the pike this will still work ands that's what counts.
Just buy it. You'll piss away $500 on beer this semester. Spend it on something useful instead.

Exynos Quad/Mali make this the most powerful Android tablet on the market (for now). So even without using the pen it delivers better performance and usability then all the tablets that preceded it. If its a fad, what are they? Its Achilles Heal is that it doesn't offer a 1080P display. Tablets with S4 Pro are coming as is a Samsung 11.6" tablet with a Exynos 5250 chip and retina display (per the trial). If you need a tablet now your choices are quality and performance (Note) or a 1080P display (TF700). Either choice is just as likely to become obsolete.

The pen is amazing. But this isn't a tablet for those with ADD. The learning curve is steep and long. You'll get out of it what you put in to it and there's a lot to get out of it.

It isnt natural if that's what you're asking. I can't imagine writing on a glass surface ever will be. But it's an acquired taste and behaves very consistently so you get the hang of it. Learning to trust palm rejection has been the most difficult for me.

As a student the biggest surprise for me when using this tablet is that the palm rejection actually works and is one of the biggest features of this tablet for me when using the s-pen.
Other things such as performance is great and wht i found very helpful is the extra ram which coming from the OG galaxy tab which has 1gb ram (which is by no means a little on a tablet) is very helpful.
Sure u will need to learn new things about the usage of this tablet to take advantage of its feature but the return should be worth it.
As with the tommorow's tech question, with all tech there will always be something bigger and better around the corner. If you keep looking foreward to see what is coming u wont have time to enjoy what is available now. My advice dont wait too long if ur going to buy thos tablet, get it while its new to not be tempted by the differences between it and what might come a few months from now.
Good luck

I wonder what the next step could be and if further development could significantly increase usabilty and/or productivity.
Well: screen res could be increased but maybe for the sake of batt life ?
Batteries are the bottle neck and for this the SGN10.1 is more than brilliant (10 hrs. + )
For me the SGN10.1 can hardly be topped although I´m an early adopter and crazy for new tech.

Screen resolution is definitely going to increased to compete with the future iPad. The rumored Samsung 11.6 inch tablet is said to have a resolution very close to the iPad's.
They can also put an Super AMOLED screen on there once they can make it more cost efficient.
S Pen input will probably be further improved.
The rest is whatever new comes up. I think the Galaxy Note 10.1 has almost everything a Tablet can have as of now.
Anyway, thanks for all your input. Well, I made my decision actually to not buy it yet. I am going to wait for further announcements as I have a hunch that something might appear soon. Of course, if that thing doesn't come, I'll be hurting myself, but I'll take the chance. It worked well for me with the GNex.
I doubt an 11.6 inch pad with retina display will sell for $500. Also that thing will be MASSIVE. With a case it would be close to 12.5 inches across.
People are so spoiled by cheap tech now. Everyone forgets the fiirst most basic Razor phone was $500 on contract.

I think you misunderstood my post. Those are just possible upgrades that can happen in the future. I'm not saying all those additions will be in the next iteration of the Note nor do I think such a massive price increase would appeal to the general consumer.
I am very aware of cost increases as a result of adding features. I am not refusing to buy this tablet due to its low resolution. In fact, I have never seen the new iPad in my life so I wouldn't know what a high PPI tablet would look like. Furthermore, I have always prioritized a quality screen over a quantity screen. I've done this with my iRiver Clix2 which had an AMOLED screen and my Cowon S9 which also had an AMOLED screen.
There isn't anything wrong with the Note as far as I can see. It's actually perfect for me, but I just like to wait a bit and see how things go. It doesn't hurt to wait, and even if I do wait too long, a new Note will come and I can be sure of it then.
Addendum:
I forgot:
The next step will be the "Google Glasses Project" after an introduction- and maturing-period of 1-2 years (or longer).
Once Google Glasses will be fitted with gesture-recognition and res 720p maybe You can write notes with Your finger in the air and record conversations/lectures in StT (Speech to Text).................. :highfive:
This will definitely come, the question only is: WHEN ?

note 10.1 full of lag? plus ipad comparison

Hey guys...
So I want to love the note and think the spen with a tablet is just awesome. So I went to best buy today to play around. Have any of you played with the note in best buy? I ask because wow it was laggy. Noticeable shutters While swiping home screens; delays after trying to close out multi screen display, etc. Yet everyone on here says its super fast... I even disabled home screen widgets. On the flip side I'm considering a used iPad retina. I'm kinda tired of android. Currently have a nexus 7 which is fantastic but I need more functionality. The iPad just seems so polished from the gorgeous retina display to the more polished apps. I know multitude of people sold their iPad after using the note so I'd love to hear those opinions. Thanks for the help guys... Fwiw I'm an android guy at heart but the fragmentation of android makes me really appreciate apple lately... Their stuff is just smooth.

Don't base off your decision on BB's display model. I tried the same and it was super leggy.. I found gazillion things running and weird stuff people had tried on it or it could be anything but it was just unusable on the other hand iPad was normal (is it deliberate ?!?!) Anyhow, try buying one and play with it for about 2 weeks and then make a decision (you can always return it if you don't enjoy it - within X days policy)

Don't you think there would be a 100 page thread on the front page of the forum if that was true? There's a couple of user-made videos showing transitions, multiview in action, and multiple apps running that are floating around. Check those out. Below is a comparison review to the TF700 made by Lisa at MobileTechReview who's considered pretty thorough and unbiased. Personally I have over 100 apps loaded and have 30 widgets on my home pages and I don't have any lag. I will say when using S-Note in multiview there's a bit of lag when moving from the other open app to it but it's only noticeable because everything else is so fast comparatively. JB should fly on Exynos Quad with 2GB of RAM. Until the Nexus 10 comes out the Note is the fastest Android tablet on the market bar none.
On the flip side I'm considering a used iPad retina. I'm kinda tired of android.

Apples and oranges (no pun intended). If you're only interested in consumption, browsing, and gaming the Note's features probably aren't a big deal for you. An iPad or Nexus 10 would serve you better because of their displays. If all I cared about was consumption I'd probably get the Nexus 10. I'm not a big fan of walled gardens so nothing Apple makes is on my shopping list.
Op answered his own question really. New Ipad is the opposite of more functionality..lmfao you will get way less as IOS isn't as versatile as android. Apple is cool and alot of good apps bit Android is superior by far,IMO. My first tablet was an ipad1. Used it over 2 yrs. Back then Ipad was only real good device out. Android tabs were lacking. Now, Android tablets are tons more capable of various tasks than a mere Ipad. I gave my Ipad to my 2yr. Old daughter. I now have 2 Nexus 7's, Note 10.1, and ipad1. I use to have a transformer prime also. Once i went android, tablet wise, there was no looking back.

Well I love iPads, have had every one usually on release day, same with iPhones, but I can also appreciate Android tablets, and while most Android tablets I've used to date have been disappointing (most recently the Asus Infinity), I have to say the Note 10.1 is a remarkable product. I haven't used the S pen much yet, but it does seem very capable. I'm running straight stock and don't notice much, if any, lag. The browsers could be a little faster at page rendering, but all in all from an overall perspective it's plenty fast.
I have to agree with you about iOS apps being more polished, they truly are, but android apps keep getting better and better. The nice thing I like about android is that it's a lot more flexible and I'm a geek at heart, so all the widgets and stuff are really cool. The Note takes that to a whole new level with the pop up apps, side by side windows and s pen functionality.
I also love the display, I think it's awesome, the front facing speakers are also a very unique feature. It's hard to compete with the audio quality out of an iPhone / iPad, but this Note's speakers are stellar.
My Note is a little on the creaky side, but I'll leave that for nit-pickers So far I love mine and the pro's far outweigh the con's.

Really appreciate the thoughtful replies and not flaming me - started the thread while in the theater waiting for Argo to start (excellent movie by the way), realized I rambled a little bit.
Anyways, Demandarin - I never thought about that but it's really true, the ipad is a media consumption device for the most part while the note's hardware (and software) enable functional tasks to be performed.... So if I want functionality beyond really smart/polished apps (which iOs does have), note is the correct choice.
I had the first ipad, sold it cuase I didn't use it much. Had an OG transformer with dock, sold that cause I didn't use it much. I don't use my nexus 7 much but because it was so cheap I don't feel as bad. The problem is that my laptop is slim and portable so its always on the couch with me and I end up not using a tablet. The note though is advanced enough to where I think I would use it alot - in fact I want to get rid of my laptop (and have a mac mini as the "computer" in the house).
It was interesting as I was in best buy this older guy who had no idea about tablets was looking at the note vs the ipad. I'm thinking man there is no way that guy should get the note, there's just too much going on for the average user compared to the simplicity of the ipad . It's also interesting how the ipad runs in full demo mode practically, everything is locked down and apps are demo's - because of this its smooth and perfect. I figured the note was overloaded with crap as you guys said... its really a shame because if I was a general consumer like that guy, I would've been like man this note is a piece of CRAP (due to lag and the downright CLUSTER of widgets on the homescreens).
I'm gonna go ahead and try the note - the s-pen and split screen is so useful to me (I can see me doing both all the time).

It's just that you have tried tablets three times, and three times you end up not using them.
Aa for the original question: I can confirm there is no lag on a non-abused note. I used apex launcher for two days but switched back to stock touchwiz cause for me apex was laggy

I don't know why some people are having touch response issues when their devices are plugged in. Mine doesn't act any differently one way or the other and it probably spends have the time I use it plugged in via the universal dock. A couple of people on the One X forum where having the same issue but they are way in the minority. It doesn't seem like something with the device itself; if it were I'd imagine we'd be seeing a lot more comments from owners.
I never realized it until it was mentioned here. I thought it was bc i have a screen protector.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
As long as I have unit plugged into a surge protector...no problems. Without surge, it acts differently. Not sure if this would make a difference but maybe try this and see if it helps those who are having issues.
It's really risky to try stuff at stores. Chances are that the device has been used by hundreds of people without a reboot, so RAM may be completely depleted and so much in the cache partition that would confuse the device. Apps in the background can for sure make it laggy. My advice is go back and ask them clear the RAM and reboot if possible. If the iPad ran perfectly, maybe it was because nobody was playing with it and and the most popular device was just exhausted
I've used iPads before and up to a month or so ago I had my iPad2. It's a very entertaining OS, but you get tired of it very quickly; I only had it for 5 months. I bought with the excuse that the apps on iOS have more development that its counterpart in Android. And to a point it is true, but the hype gets dull very quickly.
I will confess that I'm a sort of compulsive buyer and buy things without really needing them. Just this year I've had and sold about 3 tablets beside the 3 I currently possess. If you buy the Note 10.1, I don't think you will regret it. For the first time this year I see myself keeping this one for a long time. You will not miss the iOS exclusive like Infinity Blade and tweetbot, and better facebook and twitter apps. I will not lie to you, the iOS is butter smooth, Android doesn't feel like that yet; but that should not be enough reason for not getting all the other perks...
I'm gonna try to scoop one up on craigslist... however I'm VERY intrigued to see what the nexus 10 pricing will be.
My SGN10.1 was initially full of lag as well.
What I found works is this. If you snap off the back plate you will see what looks like a screw cap. Carefully unscrew that and pour the lag into an empty jar. There is a lot of lag in there so the jar may be about half full before you are done. Once you have poured out all the lag screw the lid back on the jar and dispose of it in a hazmat safe landfill. Lag is carcinogenic so please avoid touching it.
Many people do not realize this but SGN10.1 units which have been manufactured in colder climates actually add the lag as an antifreeze. It is supposed to evaporate once the tablet is exposed to a warmer climate but occasionally it does not and the owner must pour it out manually.
Hope that helps. Once the lag has been removed your SGN10.1 should perform much better.

Hi all, I'm new to this forum
I'm a computer science student and I'm finally switching from old fashioned way of studying to tablets...many reasons for that, but most importantly because of the price of the textbooks compared to PDF and e-book. after many researches, I guess galaxy note 10 is my pick!
I'm mostly looking for a tablet that is good for reading(ESPECIALLY READING) and wouldn't hurt my eyes that much, or is light to hold in hand, can open +500 page PDFs and make notes on them easily...is GN 10.1 the answer?!
I really liked kindle paperwhite tablet(has great light), it looks really good for reading, but it does not have s-pen, and not probably good for note taking...also IPAD would be good since it has a better resolution which helps for reading, but again no stylus...but is GN 10 resolution/lighting really bad as some people mention?! do you suggest any tablet that is really good for the purpose of reading and making notes?!
Does anyone know if there will be a newer version of it coming anytime soon?! it's been a year now...I really need to buy one these days as the semester has already started, but if there be any official news about anytime soon, I'd rather wait for that...especially with all the complaints about the resolution, I guess that'd be the area they fix! do u think I should wait?
thanks guys

I really liked kindle paperwhite tablet(has great light), it looks really good for reading, but it does not have s-pen, and not probably good for note taking...also IPAD would be good since it has a better resolution which helps for reading, but again no stylus...but is GN 10 resolution/lighting really bad as some people mention?! do you suggest any tablet that is really good for the purpose of reading and making notes?!
Does anyone know if there will be a newer version of it coming anytime soon?! it's been a year now...I really need to buy one these days as the semester has already started, but if there be any official news about anytime soon, I'd rather wait for that...especially with all the complaints about the resolution, I guess that'd be the area they fix! do u think I should wait?
thanks guys

Berlin IFA 2013 Exhibition to Be Held on September 6, with Participation of New Products from Samsung so it maybe worth waiting a week or so to see what Samsung has been working on.
.
I agree that you should wait for IFA next week.
But anyway, Galaxy note 10.1 is great. I'm an orthopedic Surgeon, and I read a lot of books and references and articles. and I had chosen this tablet over the ipad for the Spen, and reading large books
After one year of using it, I'm not regretting a bit. I can open > 1GB pdfs quickly. Books over 3000 pages. Also making notes, underlines, highline, adding photos, illustrations, all is easy and enjoying to do. And more than this using application called ezPDF reader, you can save all your annotations and sync them with your smartphone. And voice versa.
About resolution, is totally comfortable for me at less 50%brightness.
I really highly recommend this, especially at its low price currently.

well assuming at IFA Samsung reveals a new galaxy note, how long will it take to release the product?
btw, how much was it when it first released?
The 32gb WiFi (8013) was $550 and the 16gb was 500.

I'm literally on the same exact boat. CS major, hate textbook prices, want something that I can ditch textbooks AND regular notebooks with.
Anyway, I'm waiting a little for the conference in September like people above me mentioned. If they announce something soon and it's similarly priced, then I'll get it. If not, then the price of the current generation will go down once the new one comes. Either way, it's a win-win. I agree that you should wait just few more weeks. Just use your laptop for the textbooks in the meanwhile.
All the talk so far for IFA has been the GN3 SMARTphone and no tablet talk at all. I would have picked up a GN8.0 but the Samsung is too stupid to offer a 32GB version so I refuse to get stuck with limited storage. I may take the plunge and get the GN10.1 but will likely hold off until IFA next week just in case they shock up with some big news. Somehow I doubt it.
There is rumor that there will be Samsung Galaxy Note 12.0 .... but 12 inches ?!?! it's really too big!! and 8 is too small for taking notes for me! if they could upgrade the 10 one with better resolution, I'll definitely go for it...I wish I could get something similar to Kindle Paperwhite screen...my friend has it and it's great for reading!!! but it's kinda too small plus it doesn't have stylus, and not good for note taking! these companies... they can easily make a product that have all the great qualities, but they don't, instead they make different products each with some special feature......keeping people hungry!
btw doesn't the 8 one come with SD card tho?
exactly the price of the books!!! I'm an international student and really the price is crazy for some books...Do they even consider who the buyer of their books are?! students...who are mostly not in a situation to pay 250 for a physics book! lol

The rumor os the 12.1" tablet seems very solid, but at that size it's just unusable for tablet use for that I have a 17.3" notebook. If this is part of Sammy's IFA announcement then my support for the Dev community will go undeterred as I rely on the Devs to fix what the OEM's won't OS Updates.

While it does have microSD it has insufficient internal storage. 16GB is a JOKE, they should never have made it or released it. The 32GB is still MIA for US import and that was announced 4-5 months ago. I gave up waiting for Expansys-USA to get them.
The only reason why I have this tablet is because I got it for free. I would have never purchased it on my own, and here is why:
The price is astronomical for the quality and screen resolution.
S-Pen is really for the most part a gimmick, unless you use it for GIMP or something similar.
Samsung software (TouchWiz) is crap and just lags the tablet down.
Gonna give you the obvious here: get the new Nexus 7. You can substitute the S-Pen for a regular $1 stylus and have it work just as well for most purposes.

I had a Nexus 7 and returned it, it was just to small. When the keyboard is on the screens text window is just to small and the cheap rear firing speakers were also a real turnoff. I also own a Blackberry Playbook and it also has a 7 inch screen but the screen layout was so much better than the Nexus 7 and the forward speakers on the Playbook are the best in any tablet, including my Note 10.1. The feel in your hands of the Nexus was also very annoying to me, it just did not feel comfortable in my hands compared to my other 3 tablets that I own (playbook, kindle fire and Note 10.1).
Remember...... There is always something new coming out and I think people have a pretty good idea as to what they are going to buy before asking question here. A trip to a Best Buy or similar store would be a good idea to see what the devices look and feel like in your hands.

I have to agree the 7-8" tablets are simply too small for real keyboard use. I got an iPad mini LTE 64GB for free and its getting sold after a week. Free is great, but I will take the cash and invest it into a better Android tablet. I feel the GN10.1 is still worthy of purchase and device support ios still strong a year later. I don't plan on running TW anyways, custom ROM's all the way.

Maybe check out their ATIV line of devices instead? I got the chance to use a Nexus 7 today and yeah, it is about an inch short of glory (not meant to be sexual...). It's oddly phablet-ish. Still, this 1280x768 isn't bad, it's just not great. Ultimately, it's all up to the user anyways. Go take a look in a store and see what fits you. Everyone's preference is different.

S-Pen is great for annotating and for taking notes in a class environment. S-Notes imho is the best software for notes which is not available for non touchwiz tablets. TouchWiz itself is pretty good. At least most bluetooth problems are resolved by Samsung before release unlike the nexus 7 2013 that has quirks in Bluetooth. A 7 inch tablet is not optimal in a class or note taking environment imho, the screen is much to small.
I feel like you couldn't be more wrong about everything. All that said i would advise the op to wait a week or so and see what comes. A new unit is inevitable. At that point they will unshelve the old units and the price will take a drop on eBay. Or buy the new model which should serve even better.

S Suite just sucks. I can't import PDFs (S-Note will crash). To me, it is all just a gimmick. OneNote makes it slightly better (but only slightly).
The quirks of the nexus 7 are due to Android 4.3. Bluetooth was already borked in the 4.1.2 to 4.2 transition. Oh well.

yeah the thing is I'm kinda in a hurry to get it sooner since I need it so bad for this semester!
do u have any idea how long will it take for the price to drop if something new didn't come out?! I'm not a constant follower of tech devices so I don't have enough info about when things get cheaper etc etc
I won't go for ebay to buy it! can't really trust it!lol...prefer best-buy...does anyone know if I buy it today and the price drops in a a few weeks, can I go back and get a refund of the difference?! I'm a foreign guy, lol...not familiar with the policies that much!
I heard cosco is selling it for 370 in LA!!!!!!!!!!! have to check that out!
I am a phd candidate molecular biology/virology/immunology.
I use my note 10.1 a ridiculous amount every day. Suggestions if you want to do it without pulling your hair out.
1. Get an aftermarket s-pen. This is not optional if you plan to write, highlight, etc a lot. The one it comes with is crap and sort of a gimmick as someone said. Having a real full size pen makes the s-pen functionality go from "so close" to "works how it should". I use the bamboo stylus feel carbon because I like a heavier feeling pen. There are many other alternatives that are great aftermarket pens too.
2. If you want to do reading and highlighting, use EZPDF reader which is on sale now for reading textbooks and highlighting. Sale is here. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=udk.android.reader&hl=en.
3. Use dropsync with your textbooks or something similar so your reading, highlighting, and notes/work on assignments are not only backed up in the worse case scenario but accessible from multiple devices like a pc at home or a phone on the go when you need to look at something quickly. Use multiple folders and keep things organized.
4. Get a small external keyboard if you have note heavy classes, writing with the pen just isn't fast enough to me, when I can type and have it perfectly legible. I use this one because I can switch to typing on tablet, phone, or home pc with one button http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...SIN=B0099SMFVQ&linkCode=as2&tag=digitren08-20
If you want a cheaper one, I used to have this one and had no issues. http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Keyb...833&sr=1-1&keywords=logitech+keyboard+android
5. For note taking I use lecture notes. I keep the keyboard in my lap to type, the tablet on the desk/table to add illustrations and diagrams or insert an image from my textbook pdf (multitasking for the win). If you have to do math based things the formula recognition is nice but has a fairly unforgiving learning curve for more advanced math. If you can get it done, it's best to do the math in snote with the formula recognition and simply import the math into lecture notes for the pages you need it.
6. Use a custom rom, don't use stock touchwiz. It's garbage. I use android revolution, and designed my own layouts on top of it and my own icon set (this part is not necessary, only the rom is)
7. GMD spen control is great for quick shortcut gestures. This one is optional, but I set one for ezpdf, snote, lecture notes, graphing calculator, periodic table, open currently running apps, and a few other apps I use a lot. Makes stuff very fast. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gmd.spencontrol&hl=en
8. If you're going to be on campus a lot, consider a external battery charger. Let's me charge my tablet from 0-100% once as well as my phone from 0-100% in one charge, simultaneously if need be. When I know I'm going to be using it long term I just plug it in so it doesn't burn down. I use this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008YRG5JQ/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
9. Master multitasking on it. I usually have ezpdf reader open, lecture notes open, and snote open at a minimum at one time and switch back and forth between them by gestures. People watching must think i'm going ape**** on my tablet.
I use to have a giant gaming laptop, so I took my old case from that and bought some foam and cut it to fit the tablet, keyboard, and external battery. It was a really nice case so I felt it was wasted sitting there. Makes carrying my stuff around very easy and it's hilarious how the thing feels like a pound or two compared to 20 like my old laptop. Took all of 20-30 minutes to modify it.
Outside of school I use it to read comics and draw. I couldn't be happier with it. Like others have said, a true 1080p screen would be nice, but I've never had it hurt my eyes or anything. The new one if it is 12 inches is just too big :/
The tablet certainly isn't perfect. There's a lot of suggestions/ways to improve things that I would have for samsung mostly workflow and tweaks to functionality, but enough they would have some work to do. For a first try at trying to get into academia they did a decent job, but their second attempt whenever it is better have a lot of gripes fixed. It could be the number one contender in academia with some work, but I wouldn't trade it for a surface or anything similar that is out nowadays.
I typed this in a hurry, so sorry it's a disorganized mess.

Nexus 6 Thoughts and Review from a former Note II User

I have noticed quite a few Galaxy Note II users online that are close to pulling the trigger on a new phone. I have been in that camp for a few months and finally did. I really don't have and major complaints about the Galaxy Note II but rather small quibbles about the device. So you have a basic idea of where I am coming from I'll let you know what I like and dislike about the Galaxy Note II.
GNOTE II Pros:
Good Specs - The phone has specs that are still considered above mid level and should still be a viable phone for at least a couple more years if properly updated...if.
Camera - I get pretty fair image clarity from the phone and when I need something better I'll break out a DSLR or my Galaxy Camera.
Voice - Very clear and loud.
S-Pen - Oh how I'll miss thee.
Capacitive Buttons/Physical Buttons - Well thought out for one-handed use.
Weight Its a bit heavy but I actually like the weight of this phone and could probably use it as a throwing-star analog to get the drop on somebody if I hit them square in the temple. But that really is not a concern for most people.
Hardware - Its well made and very resistant to drops with a simple TPU case.
GNOTE II Cons:
Updates - I'm on T-Mobile which has taken any chance it has to kill the possibility of future updates. Occasionally an errant voice on a messageboard out of T-Mobile Customer Support stating they have seen this in the works wafts across my screen but I have yet to see it come to fruition.
Samsung Ideology - Samsung products are good for a year then they release a new one as if you really need a new product from them. Samsung makes great products but rarely do they fix glaringly obvious mistakes after a year past its original creation. I currently am working on a Samsung monitor with a color calibration issue that has been reported and known by the company for years but never fixed but they fixed it on the new model of this monitor. My Galaxy Camera, while nice, suffers from insane Touchwiz lag and could use an update on fixing that but we won't see it because they released the Galaxy Camera 2. I am in the game for technology to last a minimum of 3 years running well. I realize the market is bleeding edge but the edge has gotten far less bloody than the G1 days. I shop for phones like I do TV's or computers now.
S-Pen Manufacturing - I've been through four S-Pens. I use it a lot for taking notes throughout the day as it feels more natural than typing on a computer screen. The S-Pen tends to randomly stop working without provocation. Then if you order a "100% OEM Samsung Factory S-Pen" most likely its a Chinese knock-off. I can't find true S-pens anymore which is a concern for owning a new Note.
Lack of Stable ROMS - Nearly everything I have tried causes issues with NFC or Bluetooth. I use bluetooth all the time for music to various speakers, headphones, or my car.
Knox - It does its stinking job too well. SU can run but it can't hide. I have lost SU so many times on this stupid phone it is ridiculous. Let alone the every 10 minutes my phone lets me know that Triangle Away is being activated. I don't do a lot of coding or tinkering but I do like finding ROM's with good utilitarian purposes. I remember swapcache back in the G1 days and enjoyed finding the next cool thing to do with my phone! We are past that time now, honestly, but if it isn't Samsung branded then Samsung doesn't want you to do it.
Samsung Services - "You have started S-Voice" NO I DIDN'T. "Saving contact to Samsung Contacts" Bad Samsung, stop it! I insanely dislike...nay..HATE how Samsung will not let you get rid of its version of things. My contact list was a thing of beauty running in the 100's with every person I needed to work with (I'm a teacher that does coordination work and administrative work for a school of 600+), their room numbers, email addresses, and everything you could think of until I bought a Samsung product. I have some names with 20 duplicates due to the way this beast handles contacts. I eventually just had executive function overload and decided to give up on being organized. I might bring that back to life soon.
Now that you have an idea of where I'm coming from this is what I think of the Nexus 6....
I like it!
The first thing I really enjoyed about this phone was the speed. I'm running it Stock, Rooted, and Encrypted (for now...maybe forever...I work at a school where my kids know how to build robots and get linux running on projectors so I wouldn't mind encryption on my devices) and loving the heck out of it. I was so impressed by simple things at first such as animations from opening folders as soon as my finger touched the screen whereas my Note II would lag for a good time without animations. In fact, turning on the device is so overwhelmingly stupidly simple to turn on. I can check the time by just pulling it out of my pocket without touching buttons where if I wanted to check the time on my Note I would have to wait 5 - 10 seconds after pressing the power button while pondering the ever present question, "Did I press that button?" which inevitably leads to "#$&(*, I pressed it again and turned it off!"
The next thing I noticed was the size and weight. It is a bit harder to use than my Galaxy Note II with one hand. I think if they reversed the capacitive Back button it would be a lot easier to use for us right handers. I may look in to figuring that out. Honestly, I almost feel like this thing is too thin and light. It feels well built and solid. Even with the SUPCASE I bought it still feels a little odd in my hands but that may be due to the weight being very centered in the deep area of the curve opposed to being consistently weighted. As a personal aside this is the first phone I have ever put a screen protector on WITHOUT BUBBLES....I..AM...A ....GOD!!! Well..maybe demigod. Needless to say, Spigen makes a fine screen protector.
Unlocking and rooting this thing was a breeze. Once I get paid in a couple of weeks I plan on donating to @WugFresh for at least a case of beer for his amazing Toolkit that will even walk you through setting up Windows 8 drivers! You can find that at http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/development/toolkit-wugs-nexus-root-toolkit-v1-9-8-t2947452
The camera is better than my Note II by simply being clearer which I'm assuming is to the better camera sensor. I haven't messed with it that much.
The screen and adaptive lighting are by far my favorite thing on this phone. I am probably in the minority on this but adaptive lighting is brilliant. I have seen a lot of people talking about how AMOLED is causing the reddish/purple/yellowish hues to blacks and grays at low light levels. I do not believe that is the fact. It seems like they are using some sort of blue light filtering for this in low light. As an insomniac I tend to send the wee hours of morning which I consider night perusing XDA, Twitter, and various other odds and ends of the internets and am so happy the screen actually gets dark. My Gnote II on the lowest setting was annoyingly bright. I thought I was a genius one day when I thought to use a blue screen filter and made it darker but lo and behold the backlit capacitive buttons attached directly to the stinking hardware on the Gnote II. Its like having someone flash their brights at you when you use one of those programs on the Note. Its annoying. The Nexus 6 takes no part in this and I would 100% recommend it for fellow insomniacs. It has helped me to get sleep a little bit quicker over the last couple days which is a nice benefit. Lets see if that keeps up though. I'm pretty immune to sleep.
Also the screen is really nice quality and reproduces blacks amazingly well. I'm an art teacher and art history buff so I usually check out different high quality images on my phone to see how good it looks. It seems to work very well at recreating the color and light of some of the paintings. My favorite to use for this test is Van Gogh's Starry Night Over Rhone. Eventually my phone gets used in the classroom when a student needs to look up an image and put on an easel (or kickstand case but haven't seen one I like yet) to display when my tablet or laptop is in use.
Battery life and charger! Its great. 'Nuff said.
I think the biggest negative so far is the volume of calls. My wife said I sound quieter than usual. I also can't hear people as loudly as I used to. The speakerphone does not travel as far as the Note when it absolutely should seeing as the speakers are fairly decent for a cell phone. I could see someone fixing this pretty easily in a ROM.
The other negative is the lack of some multitasking programs that Samsung had and of course the lack of S-Pen. I use a Huion H610 Pro at home for digital art and graphic design so I loved the fact that Samsung phones used similar tech but I absolutely abhor using capacitive styluses (styli?). I'll have to figure out something I can carry with me that will work like that with a similar feel.
Anyway, as of right now I'm extremely happy with this phone. I have had no issues as of yet and luckily no burn in however I do not like my phone to cause sunspots when I look away from it so I'm not expecting to have a huge problem with it. If you have some similar issues with the Galaxy Note II (which T-Mobile amplifies) then I would suggest jumping ship especially if you have crackflashing tendencies because there is no Samsung product without a Nexus name attached to it that will be as easy to deal with as this.

Let me go ahead and apologize for the poor grammar and lengthy sentences. I'm sitting home from work sick today (XDA fun time does not happen between the hours of 7am to 5pm at work normally) with bronchitis. The medicine(s) I'm on must really like run-on sentences after I re-read that wall of text. I hope it helps someone after deciphering it, haha.
From one educator to another (I'm a school administrator and former classroom teacher), let me say 'well done!'. Before the Nexus 6, I was a proud Note owner for the last three years - Note 1 and Note 3 to be exact. After finding out that the Note 4 would be even more locked down than the 3, and deciding that I was getting really really tired of TouchWiz and truly loved what Lollipop's UI brought to the table, I made the jump. And I am just as pleased with my choice as you are. No more crazy contacts lists or S-Voice intrusions, amen. ......I do miss my old S-Pen though....
I'm using the Note 2 atm and I "really want" the Nexus 6 (64gb infact, hard to come by in Australia otherwise I probably would have one by now).
Using SlimKat now because the stock ROM was absolutely dreadful!! (Laaag!) The S-pen does not work out of the box on the current rom and I'm not missing it either... I'm ready for the Nexus and looking forward to using "modern speakers" on a phone.

I also came from the note2 on tmobile and like the OP said, there was a lack of ROMs for the phone.
i ended up pulling the trigger on a white 32gb nexus 6 (i was looking for a 64gb but they were hard to find) the other day and like it very much. I think i rooted and unlocked the bootloader within 30mins of having the phone.
just trying to enable tethering on it right now is the only obstacle for me.

I had a Note 4 from T-Mobile for a few days and I didn't care for it at all & I was coming from a S4 before getting the Note 4, So I decided to return it and got the Nexus 6 which is way better. I'll also be paying less then I would of been with the Note 4.
How does the screen brightness compare between the two?
How's the focusing speed compared to the note 2?
I'm trying to decide between this and the HTC m8. I have small kids so I need something with a quick focus and overall good durability. (I'm not really concerned with megapixel count.)
Thanks!

I plan on getting things back to normal now thankfully. My contacts are so much easier to get through now. Right now I'm in the midst of dealing with starting up after school programs for our school and will be editing Google Docs with this thing next week so I'll get a real test of how it works. I work at a charter school (part of the biggest charter school system in Texas: Harmony Public Schools) and since we don't have a bus system our after school clubs tend to be in the hundreds daily. I run around circles making sure everything is going right and people are in the right place so its helpful to be able to pull up a list on a decent size screen to find information on the go. Our school has been around 7 years and I've been there 6 years of that with only 2 people there longer than me so I tend to be the guy to ask about anything.

How does the screen brightness compare between the two?

With adaptive brightness off the Nexus 6 is noticeably brighter with better black levels and a warmer tone (not yellowish.) I keep it on most of the time and haven't had any problems seeing things. It has been raining here in South East Texas since I've owned the phone so if it ever clears up I'll let you know how it compares outside but I'm assuming it will be a bit better than the Note II.

How's the focusing speed compared to the note 2?
I'm trying to decide between this and the HTC m8. I have small kids so I need something with a quick focus and overall good durability. (I'm not really concerned with megapixel count.)
Thanks!

Ok, I did a couple of tests. First from picking it up off of a black countertop and letting it autofocus on its own in a decently lit room. The Nexus 6 won by like less than half a second to a second.
The next test was when I would tap the screen to set white balance and autofocus in a decently lit room. From the tap the Note II won by less than half a second.
The last test was in a dark room looking then picking it up to focus on a computer screen to test white balance setting and autofocus. The Nexus 6 won this hands down by a bit over a second. I think it simply achieves much quicker white balance but autofocus is slightly slower. I'll try to do some comparison shots tomorrow when I get home from work if you want.
Thanks for that. No need for test shots. You answered my question perfectly.
Totally off-topic from the Nexus 6: if you enjoy the extra duties in addition to your classroom, please consider administration! Keep up the good work for our kids.

I thought there were a couple other threads like this already going on. here's one...

I personally love it. it's got its niggles, but it is what it is.

Yes, this is the problem. Most device forums have one roll-up thread for user reviews. We don't need a new thread each time someone buys the device. It clutters the forum and makes finding information difficult.

This thread has an ambiguous title and seems to be only for the OP's benefit, so it keeps sinking to the bottom as people ignore it and start another thread unnecessarily.
I have a question here :
When popping up Aircommand menu does it works with finger while clicking on any app or not ?
But how is it in the hand without any cover? Is it not slippery as....?

The S6 edge is great if you want more looks and it's a better party trick kind of phone. The Note 5 is much more functional, has the S-Pen, bigger screen, a battery that will actually last a full day, and an extra gig of ram (meaning less aggressive app killing). If you want a party trick type phone, get the edge. If you want a functional phone, get the Note 5.

My only real design issue involves point 3 in this thread by @zeesh86. I don't consider myself a fatfinger (maybe just like a little sausagy-fingered), but I was opening, moving, and deleting apps regularly on accident. I'm blaming it on the rear curved sides and smaller distance between the screen and side of the phone. Less bulk means my grip overlaps the sides and my fingers touch the screen. I ended up having to lock the apps (Nova Launcher) because it was such an oft occurring issue; however, since adding a case (and not even a bulk one) it's no longer a problem.
Pros
- big display with good colors
- powerful CPU (altho i read it gets hot and performance is questionable)
- Stylus
- nice camera (http://echostorms.net/camera.png)
- fast charging
Cons
- no removable SD card
- no removable battery
- locked bootloader (verizon and AT&T), making it difficult to root, and prevents fun stuff
- heavy KNOX hardware
- uses 75%+ of the 4GB RAM when nothing is running (just like the Galaxy S6)
- advertised as octa-core, but actually 2 quad core CPUs. Probably because one is at 1.5GHz while the other is 2.1GHz, bigger numbers = higher sales, so hide the fact that one is slower
unfortunate to say, but iOS > Android
I could probably come up with more pros/cons, but these first that came to mind.
i did a camera test earlier today, records at 1440p? - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYu-5LPWPy4
Own it. Love it. I've never been happier in a mobile device.
Screen is gorgeous, sound is loud for a cell phone, the feel in the hand is great as well. The curved back makes it easy to hold. If you don't have your thumb centered the fingerprint scanner won't read. Fast charging is amazing too. Have 15 minutes? Boom Extra 20-25% of juice. I've noticed that this phones battery life is better than my previous Note 4, 3, 2 and any other device I've owned. Coupled with the fast charging and wireless charging it's a breeze. If I don't remember to charge my phone overnight--no problem. Charge it real quick while I get ready for work and I'm usually at 100%

That can be remedied by moving your thumb around a bit when registering your fingerprint. Sure you can't just use the corner of your thumb, but as long as your covering most of the button, it shouldn't matter whether it's centered or not if you've recorded enough of the print.
I didn't want to create a new thread for this but don't know exactly where to express this sentiment.
Today my brother bought an AT&T Galaxy S6. It's still on 5.0.2. That really worries me for my AT&T Note 5. How long does AT&T take to update their devices? How long has 5.1 been available while a flagship device on AT&T is stuck on 3+ month year old software? Will we ever see Marshmallow on AT&T?

AT&T notoriously takes longer than other carriers to send updates. Been like that for ages.
My list of Ps and Cs coming from an iPhone 6+ and Oneplus One
Pros:
-Battery life has been very good
-Camera takes quality photos and video
-Voice calls are clear
-Phone has a relatively small footprint, so the size is not unwieldy
-s pen works very well, no issues
-s pen integration with the note is a very cool feature and high up on my nice-to-haves
-Screen is gorgeous and easy to read in daylight, I've compared to the iPhone 6+ screen for fun and text looks sharper and most pictures and video look sharper.. there are times the iPhone looks better for certain games that I'm sure were not optimized for the higher resolution
-FAST CHARGING IS REAL and is freaky fast!!!
Cons (very small issues):
-Occasional lag when scrolling... after using Oneplus One and iPhone 6+ it's hard not to notice a few glitches here and there when scrolling pages, especially pages with a lot of rich media; but it's hardly noticeable and I've already gotten used to it, disabling some of the bloatware definitely helped, I'm confident of that.
-Bluetooth is inconsistent when connecting to my Samsung soundbar, which sucks because it's the only device in my house that can't connect. I need to play around a little bit to figure out why.
-Bloatware, bloatware, bloatware
Overall, if I was asked to rate this phone I would say 10/10 compared to other phones in the same class.
Some experience about my note 5
I was tempting by the charging cloud
Actually, Samsung do some innovation on Note 5. I love the glass body very much. Fast wireless charger inside was truly a great progress, which made me want more!!

Hey guys! We have a new section here in the Note5 forum, it's kind of experimental. It's a place where you users can rate and review the many different facets of what makes a device unique like maximum (and minimum) screen brightness, app launch speed, speakerphone quality, and more. Check it out here:

My mistake of buying Note 5
Oh Lord how I miss having an SD card.
I've never had problems with deleting old stuff off of my phone this is the first time I had to delete stuff of my phone.
On bright side- it helps me stay on top of things but now I gotta continuously monitor storage.
Even now i'm down to free space 2 gb lol
Apparently S7 has sd card in it again- so I'm guessing Note 6 will have it too. Not sure if I'd get it or not but it's nice to see Samsung is going back on track.
What do you guys miss?
Oh Lord I miss the sunlight, it's been a long depressing winter here.
On the brighter side 110gb on onedrive , 17gb on Google drive, plus you can use a OTG drive. My Note 5 has 64gb too !
I miss my dog too, he died and my wife has left me What am i gonna do now?
