Please help me with device encryption - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear Experts,
as I have already complained in several topics, my N9005 didn't boot after encryption.
Now I'm on the way to try other ROMs. But now I'm starting to thing, how to even test it with other ROMs. I have a backup of the original ROM made with TWRP. BUT, if I encrypt the device and something goes wrong - then how will I restore ? Will TWRP be somehow able to read the encrypted device ? Please suggest on how to proceed ?
I'm afraid, that if I put a ROM and encrypt the phone with it, I'll be stuck with that ROM... Or if not - what to choose in TWRP in order to get rid of the encryption then ?
Many thanks in advance!

Did you use the phone with stock recovery to encrypt?

[Q] Encryption, decryption and root!

Hi everyone. As an obsessed flasher from my old HTC one 7 i couldnt wait much longer to unlock and root my beloved Nexus 6P.
I have a few questions as i keep seeing the words encrypted and decrypted flying around alot. I understand what encryption is, and what it is there for. What i don't understand is how to know when my phone is encrypted or not. For example, i have unlocked, flashed mod boot img. and then had to factory reset my phone to flash TWRP 2.7.8.1 ( which said decryption not needed) i then installed SuperSU for root. I have read that factory reset can remove decryption... but i have no idea how to check.
Do i need to re-encrypt my device, if so, how do i do this? Will encryption stop root or make TWRP not work properly in regards to flashing and backups.? Can i install custom kernels with a decrypted device or again shall i re-encrypt it?
I also see a screen when entering recovery and rebooting phone "Your device software cannot be checked for corruption, please lock bootloader". Is this normal or have i done something wrong?
Thanks in advance for your help!
so ive managed to find out that the message when in recovery or rebooting is normal for marshmallow. Can anyone help me in terms of the encyrption/decryption issue please?

SM-J500F/DS cannot boot

Hi to all,
had root this device on 6.0.1 with TWRP. Now I needed a full reset due to a Bluetooth problem to check if its root/software related. BUT on my mistake I erased EVERYTHING through TWRP (Dalvik/ART Cahe,System,Data,Internal Storage,Cache, Micro SD, Android Secure, USB-OTG)
Tried to install custom rom Aospextended but I don't know the how to and I am lost in forums.. the phone doesn't boot... after zip file installation the screen fades to somewhat yellowish like LCD problem... I can still access TWRP..
p.s. I am an iPhone guy and just tried to fix this for my son... hope for your understanding for probably asking something very common..!
ANY HELP WOULD BE greatly appreciated even to get back to stock rom
Many thanks in advance!

You must go to section Samsung j5 2015 you will find all you need, since restoring to stock, rooting, installing the correct TWRP for your device....and more.
You NEED to READ because too much information for one post, but this is the correct place for you.
Pay attention the correct files TWRP for 601 because there are TWRP for lollipop devices, and when choosing ROMs you MUST downgrade your firmware to Lollipop, that's the reason for artifacts and greenish screen because of incompatibility of TWRP and there are ROMs that you can install with twrp601, others need booltloader and twrp lollipop. Hope you are nota blind anymore

I had the same problem when flashing Lineage 14.1 on my phone (J500M), screen fadding with a green-yellowish color and no boot. That happened because I was trying to flash the custon Rom with the wrong base. I was using 6.0 before flashing and Lineage requires you start from 5.1.
All I need to do was search for my device on sammobile.com , get the right stock firmware and use Odin to flash the rom on my device. From there I was able to flash TWRP again and install Lineage correctly.

You have two solutions, you can restore your phone STOCK ROM with Samsung Smart Switch or downgrade to Lollypop firmware and install any custom rom trough TWRP.
Restore to STOCK:
Use Samsung Smart Switch, see howto here
Downgrade to Lollipop:
Install only Bootloader/Modem [6.0.1/5.1.1]BOOTLOADER AND MODEM FOR J500xx [Downgrade more easy] (Collection)
Downgrade to Lollypop (full ROM) (Tutorial) Upgrade J5 (2015) to 6.0 and Downgrade to 5.1.1 + Rooting

To flash TWRP you need to have OEM unlock enabled in Developer Settings. Otherwise your device will not boot.
There is a guide here
I'm pretty sure if your device is not rooted or anything already beforehand there isnt a way to remove the password without loosing your data. This is to protect a users data incase there phone is stolen or lost.

Hi sorry for slower reply im at work.
This is the same post i linked you.
Yes - you can install TWRP without installing root but you still need to have OEM unlock ticked in developer settings.
Also once flashing TWRP you will not be able to mount data or boot your device unless you FORMAT data which will loose all your files on your internal storage.
i think the solution "so i found solution of TWRP for remove the password.key and/or gesture.key in data/system right"
is only for people that already have TWRP installed on there device before they loose there passwords.

[Stock Pie] Humble Request: Tutorial to switch from stock to custom ROM

Hello dear users and highly appreciated developers!
I reckon I am not the only one who is stuck on stock Pie and would really like to switch to a custom ROM but either don't know how, or aren't sure about it because of all the threads with bricked phones and all that stuff.
If there is anybody who has a complete tutorial/way of doing it - switching from stock Android Pie - January Security Update to any custom ROM, without bricking the phone, losing IMEI, signal etc. would be so kind to share it with us? Step by step would be convenient because there are people who aren't experienced at all with flashing and stuff like that. Especially in these "circumstances".
Very much thanks in advance, any help is much appreciated!

Hotboot latest official twrp using fastboot command "fastboot boot name of twrp.img
Take a backup of efs partition
Wipe system,data and factory reset
Flash the rom of ur Choice
Flash twrp installer by cosmicdan
Reboot>recovery
Flash gapps+magisk
Reboot to system
Thats what i did
And you didn't get any "Your system has been destroyed" messages after hotbooting TWRP or stuff like that?
hot booting twrp is fine, just dont flash it. it mess up everything on pie.
make a efs backup on twrp fist then make a copy of it on your computer.
hot booting to twrp may take up to 30 seconds, dont panic.
@apexashwin
Hey, can you please link me that "twrp installer by cosmicdan"?
Also, if I flash Pixel Experience do I have to still do the steps which'd come after flashing the ROM? (installing cosmicdan's stuff, gapps, etc.)

It's easy to find. Just find it in the rom/kernel/recovery section.
And as they stated in PE OP, it included gapps so you don't have to flash gapps.
I did in fact do what you said and I managed to flash Pixel Experience without any trouble! Thank you very much

Error doing backup in TWRP

Hello. When I try doing a Backup in TWRP, I get the error shown in the attachment.
Can anyone help me with this?
Looks like TWRP never decrypted the data partition on your phone.
You need to include a lot more information if you expect people to be able to help you.
What version of TWRP are you using?
What version of OOS or are you on a custom ROM?
Did the backups ever work before?
Did TWRP ask you for your Password/Pin/Pattern when it booted?
Hello and thanks for responding.
TWRP: Bluespark 3.2.3
OOS: 9.0.13 (I just rooted, no custom ROM installed)
This is my first time trying to backup.
TWRP didn't ask me for a pin/password when I first ran it*
* I think
Thanks for the additional information, it definitely helps to see what could be wrong. I hope I didn't come off with the wrong tone in my message.
It looks like you might be using an old version of TWRP that does not support the decryption of internal storage.
Try the one from this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/on...overy-unofficial-twrp-touch-recovery-t3861482
Use the link that says "TWRP 3.3.1-6 Unofficial Installer by mauronofrio"
If you have an otg cable you can put the file on a flash drive and flash that way. Otherwise you will have to follow the install guide section in the first post I linked.
Let me know if that works for you.
Oh dear.
I followed the install guide here (without issue): https://forum.xda-developers.com/on...overy-unofficial-twrp-touch-recovery-t3861482
And after, when I try to boot the phone normally, it boots to recovery and asks for the pin. After I enter the pin I'm just in recovery. I can't seem to get back to a normal boot.
Ok, I flashed Magick and now I think I'm good.
Thanks for your help! I can now do backups.
