Definitely been waiting for more information on customizations with the HD10. Had one in the box here waiting for more definitive success.

5th generation fire hd8 8gb here running 5.3.1.0
OTA updates shut off and GApps installed and working. Had lock screen ads shut off for a night but they came back...
No luck yet with root (of course) but willing to post results as software develops.

Thanks for this thread. I have a new HD8 and unfortunately nothing (apart from the Google store) really works atm. Not the tools fault obviously, everything will probably work as soon as we get root.

Mine hasn't been turned on yet. . .so I don't know the OS level, but not sure if that helps with regards to getting root.

Hello everyone,
im looking into buying a Fire HD8 (2016). I need it for writing some python code on the go, so I really need a proper ROM or at the very least Play Store. I know that the 2016 HD8 with v5.3.1.0 isnt rootable yet. How can I inform myself about the progress? Do we know that its still possible? I wouldnt like to buy the tablet just to find out that its the first one where amazon did some black magic and made it unusable for the task
So yeah any idea who is working on it, where, any information basically?
And another question: what kind of OS is the new HD 8 running? Is it again an android with some amazon launcher or did they release a full ROM?
Thanks for the support and all!
Regards

only ones that we know are actively working on rooting are the Kingroot team, they are mostly looking for general Android exploits, and don't really give ETAs
Playstore can be installed without rooting
replacement of Amazon launcher should be possible without rooting
Fire OS 5.X.X is a modified Android 5.X.X rom

Thanks. Can do. What I have wondered is if any specific version is more root-able than another. . .mine is probably old. . .had it on shelf for a long time.

Hi sd_shadow, thanks for the quick reply! I hope I didnt come across as entitled, wasnt asking for an ETA or anything but my post reads this way.
I am trying to consolidate all the information I'm gonna need on Friday (when my HD8 arrives).
1) disable OTA updates by renaming apps
2) install play services, store, framework etc; let them update
3) ?
Anything I need to make sure it never ever updates OTA?
--
As of how to do it on 6th gen, so far I found this:
Disabling OTA update (by renaming the releavant apps):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67364134&postcount=12
"Installing Google Play Easy (works on 6th gen)"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=69029147&postcount=88
- thats the best (only?) instruction for 6th gen I could find;
"Install Google Apps Without ADB/PC"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/hd8-hd10/development/install-google-apps-adb-pc-t3314420
- for 5th gen, someone in the thread claimed that it bricks 6th gen, still found the explanation interesting and somewhat similar to the one in the previous thread/link;

Disabling updates requires
a) changing file extension for updater apps e.g. .bak
b) delete update apps
only 4 apps are needed for google framework
google account manager, google play services, google play store, and google services framework
the supertool can install them without rooting

I'm using the new 2016 Fire HD 8 OS version 5.3.1.1
I just used the SuperTool to install Playstore.
any idea when amazon is going to enable Alexa Voice Assistant on this model? Its kind of the main reason I bought it

Official Stock Firmware:

Thank you! I was able to use your link to download the official stock firmware this to downgrade my HD 8 5th Gen/2015 KFMEWI from 5.1.3 to 5.1.2 via ADB sideload and then I used RootJunky's supertool to root using Kingroot, then disabled OTA, removed Ads, replaced Kingroot with SuperSU and installed FlashFire.
Now I'm just waiting for a stable Marshmallow (AOSP 6.0) ROM to come along. I'm SUPER jealous of all the attention the HD 7 (tate) is getting, I foolishly tried to flash the CM13 unofficial tate version using FlashFire and fortunately I just got a blank screen and nothing happened. But I really would love to test some different ROM's... do you have any recommendations I should try?

Asus Zenpad 8.0 Z380C - Any Custom Roms Available?

Hi Guys,
Sorry I'm an absolute newbie on forums so if I'm doing anything wrong please correct me
I have bought the Asus Zenpad 8.0 Z380C last weekend and I really like the tablet but the bloatware on it is absolutely killing me :crying: and my RAM. I was wondering if there is any way to get a clean version of the ASUS stock firmware or any clean custom rom for this device. I can't seem to find any dev working on this. The stock rom isn't bad but it feels like all the unused apps are slowing the tablet which is a shame as it is a good cheap tablet which can do much more.
THanks!
Niels
You need root your Z380C and unintall all bloatware.

This is the second post asking about root that you provided this particular link to and touted it as a resolution to the problem. Do you own a z380c and/or have you personally tried the method outlined in the page you have linked or did you simply google this answer?
That page just lists garbage software that's in Russian and Chinese that requires you to do surveys to download (i.e. scam software) and neither of those programs are able to root the z380. The first clue this page is crap is that the screenshots are for different devices! This is NOT an answer to the question asked.
OP: I'm looking for an answer too, if I find it, I will post it here. Good luck!
Yes I have z380c and now I know my links are bad (I used only google) I am sorry. I think here will be solution: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/intel-android-devices-root-temp-cwm-t2975096
I read about the temp rooting and untill now all have failed with me. I think we will have to wait untill the locked bootloader gets cracked or bypassed. I would love to see the new CM 13 on my zenpad. Just installed it on my note 3 lte.
I am afraid z380c is not very dilated. For CM is not interesting. But who knows.
Any good news?

This ROM is for the Qualcomm version of the tablet, not Intel as the OP requested and will not work.
This method worked for me, remember to rename the downloaded file "root-v2-z380c.img" to "root.img" (without the quotes) before the command "fastboot boot root.img"
good luck

Zenpad 8.0 Z380C (P022) Custom ROM or help with building a custom ROM ??
I'm also searching for a custom Rom for Asus Zenpad 8.0 Z380C (P022).
As I'm not a software-expert I was not able to build a custom ROM for myself, but I'm still trying/fighting. Downloaded the Kernel source from Asus, still errors when trying to make the kernel. And afterwards?
Anyone here who have experience with these things and can help me?
Reason: Bluetooth "bug" (or however you name it) in Android 5, therefore a big wish to go for Android 6 or 7. Makes no sense to scrap the tablet and buy a new one. And I'm still thinking the performance could be way better when disabling/deleting all the stuff you don't need on this device (bloatware is already removed). Maybe I'm wrong...
Zenpad is rootet.

I've managed to root it too!
Which apps can you safely remove?
I'm using Uninstall Master, but if you have a better alternative, let me know.
I've read people using Xposed to get more control (to remove ZenUI), but also people who bricked their devices with it.
Can anyone confirm Xposed isnt working or is working for Z380C?

Hi,
I installed SuperSU, BuxyBox and Root Browser after rooting. Maybe there are better options, I don't know since I'm not so familiar with all these stuff than other users here. I can't tell you what I have removed, but I also deactivated some stuff (see for yorself if this is a good idea):
Android System WebView
ZenCircle...
Asus Browser- Secure Web Surf
File Manager (the ZenUI ASUS one)
Asus SuperNote
Google Fotos
Chrome Browser
Google Text-in-...
Google
In the System Menu "Apps" i have quiete more deactivated.
Afterwards i deleted ome of these folders with the Root Browser.
But as you can see in my post, I'm not satisfied, especially because Bluetooth. And I want to setup a totally clean Android and install all for myself.

It seems Busybox is installed, since I installed Titanium Backup from the Play-store (showing BusyBox 1.19.4-Titanium from app).
Perhaps it's more easy to show what can be disabled or removed, using screenshots.
Take note: I don't use the whole photos or camera stuff, since the camera of this device is crappy.
I use my device for browsing, also speaking to Google to search + Youtube + Deezer for music. That would be all.
I'll start with mine, perhaps you can download the zenpad_apps_all.png and edit it, putting a red X-mark on top of the ones you have disabled/removed.
I've deleted Kindle, Amazon, Zinio, Clean Master, Supernote, Google Maps, and some others, that are obvious to remove.

7" HDX - No Fire OS 5 - Decisions to be made

Hi all,
For those of us who's hopes have been dashed, fire OS 5 is leaving us in it's dust.
3rd gen 7" HDX's - I have one lying here - never been rooted or modified thus far.
What advice would members give. What options do I have other than selling it on or dumping it?
Is it time to return it for store credit (had 2 yr warranty - freezes occasionally) or are there roms out there that make it worth keeping?
I am a newbie - and it's the news that we are to be denied this update that is the cause of these questions.
I think many owners will be looking for options - and will really benefit from a discussion on this.
Any views/ideas/comments welcome.

Best option (IMO) is a rollback to 4.5.2 (via 3.2.8), root, install Safestrap v4 and then flash CM11 or Nexus v4 replacing FireOS v4. Yields a 'pure' android tablet with high end specs and full access to the Play Store. Trumps FireOS 5 but a wide margin which I like too. Possible other Safestrap compatible roms might become available now the FireOS upgrade path is known.
I suspect that sending out the message that the 7" HDX 3rd gen will be getting the fire OS 5 update, then apologising and saying 'actually it won't' - will help (accidentally of course) drive sales of newer units.
Currently my device says - OS firmware 4.5.5.
I have heard that a 4.5.5.1 update has been released. Some are speculating it could be an anti-rollback update - in which case rooting could get much more difficult.
For those of us just getting to grips with the situation - how do we block OTA update to 4.5.5.1. If it has already been downloaded awaiting a reboot to install, how can we block that too?

You can not effectively block OTA updates without rooting which requires a modestly complex (and risky) rollback to 3.2.8 followed by an upgrade to 4.5.2. Safestrap v4 and two non-FireOS roms are also options once on 4.5.2.
I say 'effectively' as there are other methods for holding back OTAs such as IP address blocking or temporarily stopping services via clever use of adb commands on unrooted devices. Neither is convenient or 100% effective.
If an update has been downloaded and waiting to install you *may* be able to see and erase it from internal storage when you device is tethered to a host. Look for a. bin file containing the word 'update'.
Really appreciate the input.
Can I please ask for a list of ip's to block.
We can enter them into our router ip blocking fields.

Amazon rotates IPs. That's why IP blocking is only a temporary solution. I have long since lost track of what IPs are currently being used to distribute updates.
BTW - IP rotation is a common load balancing technique. It has nothing to do with trying to circumvent user blocks.
I would now update to 4.5.5.1, root with Kingroot, add Safestrap 4.01, and load the stable Nexus 4.05 rom. that is what I did with my 7" hdx. all can be done within minutes (just be sure to read over the forums for complete instruction if you have not custom rom'd before). runs buttery smooth and brings new life to an awesome tablet. these dev's here are amazing and willing to share their talents for the community.
I am other thor owners - really appreciate the input on this thread.
It's clear that the community suggest putting a custom rom on this device - since amazon have retired it.
For those of us who are newbies:
1. Which rom is seen as the most appropriate for this device (stability / security).
2. What functions/abilities would we have to give up (e.g screen mirroring or so on) by moving to a custom rom (ignore mayday)?

At present the only (Safestrap v4 compatible) rom choices are CM11 and Nexus v4. Both are mature, feature complete and stable. No Lollipop or Marshmallow variants. You gain much a give up little moving away from FireOS v4 as most proprietary functionality can be duplicated via official Amazon apps. Kindle book lending, Amazon's take on parental controls and Mayday are the only capabilities that can't be immediately duplicated. If dissatisfied you can always return to FireOS.

No. All HDX 7" models (thor) are 3rd gen which will not receive an automatic update to FireOS v5. Whether v5 it can be adapted to run on 3rd gen devices is unknown. Source has only been recently released. Since the bootloader remains locked on the vast majority of HDX devices a 'helper' environment such as Safestrap will be needed. None exist as of this writing.

release widevine rom update for android 7.11 and 4.4.4

Stream Netflix , Amazon and others with 1080 p on your HP Touchpad.
Use streaming Apps what before not works (like MagineTv or Waipu TV and many others)
First sorry for my bad english.
i have many roms tested on my hp touchpad but no one rom supports widevine not over android DRM classic not over android DRM modular.
Yes we can watch Netflix , Amazon but that have nothing to do with supported widevine then the apps access and play the streams over a internal other solution.
you can this test , install DRM info from androidfung over the playstore.
But many newer Stream apps like Magine TV or Waipu Tv will only works when widevine modular is avaiable on the rom and i think that is with netflix , amazon in future the same
so i have search the last two weeks for the binaries what since compatible with the touchpad Hardware and android Version.
i have many files downloaded and tested and change between the files and installed to test it again.
so i found a working combination for android 4.4.4 tested on jscullins CM11
but this solution was not working on newer android Versions so i look again and found universal qualcomm binaries what works on android 7.1.1 to.
Picture say more as words

Thanks for this! I installed on 4.4.4 and tried netflix hoping to get better quality or to enable the new offline viewing feature of netflix but sadly nothing changed for me. I even uninstalled/reinstalled netflix after flashing. When watching Master of None for example, it defaults to what seems like less than 480p.
I was told the netflix offline content requires some really strict widevine so maybe that's why it's not working. I'll give it a shot on nougat soon

Please install drminfo Form playstore https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo&hl=de
You must download the drminfo Version Form androidfung .
Then you can it run before the romupdate is installed and you will see that widevine is not supported in this device.
Then install the Rom update and run drminfo again and you will see widevine modular security level 3 is supported in this device.
Downloading with netflix works in Android 7.1.1 is use the evervolv Rom.and the downloaded streams since 1080 p
And yes you can watch the downloaded streams.
Regards Jan
I
Downloaded, installed, rebooted - works.

Yes it works on android 7.1.1 perfect.
But it works on CM 11 android 4.4.4 to.
Yes you can not (or momently not ) on Android 4.4.4 download offline stuff from Netflix but all the apps what wants widevine works and that is what i want.
I can watch WaipuTV or MagineTV what before not works .
And you have the option to watch Netflix on 1080p over the modded apk.
im back on Android 4.4.4 and look to find the solution to have the download option on netflix to.

Thats a rather simple explanation... Since Widevine never officially existed on KitKat (Android v4.x.x), as witnessed by the Op. (i.e. Device is unsupported!), why?! Because it wasn't a thought back then.
Then along came Lollipop (Android v5.x.x), and suddenly Widevine (On Android), enters the scene. So pretty much everybody running anything post Lollipop, Marshmallow, Nugat, or Oatmeal Cookie will of course all now have some form of Widevine DRM, so what's the deal then?!
Well unlike People, Widevine is NOT created equal. Widevine come in Three (In reality probably only Two), flavors. Google calls these "flavors" Levels.
Levels 1, and 2 can only be set at the Factory, and thats pretty much only if said OEM has bothered to pay up to get these Certs.
So what you, and I, and by that proxy a great deal of People have is the field settable Level 3 version of Widevine. Being filed settable there is no need to have any official Cert. So while this may well be great for some Play Movies, and YouTube stuff. This will have a major impact, for other Services that will demand you to have the highest (i.e. The tightest), level of DRM. (e.g. Amazon, Netflix, or VuDu to name a few). Which will either limit your use of their services at 480p, at best, or totally block you out, at worst.
So this is nothing anyone can or will ever be able to fix. It's also why I'm very interested in knowing more about if the latest batch of China stuff chiefly the 1 Plus 5 even has this level of support.
Any news on how to enable the download option in Android 4.4.4? Besides this feature, it's working great, thanks!!
I'm gonna give Widevine try, I can install it with 4.4 recovery and gapps via tptb right?

Would love something like this for 8.1 since I'm presently using Dirty Unicorns latest 8.1 release and noticed poor YouTube playback support with default setting. DRM Info app reports Google DRM support, but not exactly sure what all that is reported means.

Update: being bored and having free time...I decided to test drive SKZ-tenderloin-kernel-DU-Linaro_06_11_2018 update on top of du_tenderloin-v12.3-20180618-1308-RC and magically it worked and helped with my problems.
1. YouTube now works and performance isn't supper fast, but at least it loads and plays video.
2 . Games like Prime Defender 2 also now load and originally did not get past initial flash screen.
Why would this Linaro 6/11 update make a difference in performance if the kernel updates are already included in du_tenderloin-v12.3-20180618-1308-RC?
Sorry if this is the wrong forum, but you're answering questions and that doesn't happen often in the Dirty Unicorn page. Thanks Sorli...

Best option currently for Fire HD 8 5th Gen (2015)?

Hey guys,
I'm a complete noob here.
Recently was handed an Amazon Fire HD 8 2015. It had Fire OS 5.1.2 installed, and I didn't know anything about it, so when I first connected on my wifi network it updated to the latest (AFAIK) Fire OS 5.3.6.4 (5.6.3.0?).
I really want to install a custom ROM, but as far as my reading in this forum allowed me to know, this isn't possible at the moment? So I guess it never will, as this is an older model, and as it seems it wasn't very popular?
So, considering all that, what are my best options to make this thing more usable? Right now it's very sluggish. Even if it's main purpose is for reading PDF files, and browsing the web also mainly for reading news and stuff.
It seems like the RAM is the main culprit with the stock software? Would changing the launcher help?
Also, is it possible to root it with this firmware? What about TWRP?
I'm really looking for help on what's possible to hack in this model with the latest firmware. Most of what I read is directed to the Fire 7 model, and I'm never sure if the methods presented in many posts will brick my Fire HD 8.
I'm also considering just replacing the launcher and uninstalling Amazon apps that are possible to get rid of, to have a lighter and faster system, but I'm not sure what methods are possible without root for this system, and I'm afraid to brick my fire just trying random stuff.
Really appreciate any help.
TIA!

@Rortiz2:
Gracias por la respuesta!
I just managed to install a new launcher and get Launcher Hijack working (got pass the childish app name block from Amazon). It's a completely different tab now. It's flying!
If I just can get the device rooted to remove some more Amazon crap, and get my simple stuff going, then I can be 99% happy!
Another person is willing to help me to root my device using a hardmod found here on XDA. I'll read the thread carefully to find out if my model is compatible. Crossing my fingers here.
Thank you for your help once again!

A Custom ROM for Fire HD 8 (KFGIWI) 2016

Greetings and Salutations!
I have an Amazon Fire HD 8 (KFGIWI) a.k.a. 6th Generation tablet and I've been recently considering root/unlock in order to install a custom ROM. With no TWRP and/or LineageOS support for the device it's clear my options are limited. I was following this thread with interest
[discontinued][ROM][unlocked][ford, austin] Fire Nexus ROM [26 MAY 2019] but it would seem this thread has since been locked as the developer has moved on to other projects.
I don't see any recent posts in this forum about this device. Has no one managed to "crack" the 6th Generation Fire? Any success stories? I'm about to pay to have someone root/unlock my device for me.. but only if I can get something even as unrecent as Android 7
Please, indulge me with your Two Cents
I too have just picked up a 2016 HD 8 hoping to root/install lineageos, but have seemingly hit the brick wall that it isn't possible for some reason...?!
Anyone able to shed any light on this? Have seen success with the 2015 and 2018 versions... why is this one such a problem?

It's possible to get root, but there's no way to unlock the bootloader and flash a custom ROM that I know of. So, you can do stuff like disable amazon apps including the launcher (so the home button will use your own favorite launcher) and try to make the best of what there is on FireOS, but it's an ancient android version with a lot of crap on it, and it's getting less useful by the day. I would love it if I could make mine more useful. It really is tempting to just sell it and get a different year's version that is more hackable, but part of me doesn't even want to ever buy an Amazon tablet again. Nothing but trouble from these things.
For root, use these.

It is notably missing the line for the launcher, though. If you've got something like OpenLauncher installed, additionally do this:
`pm disable com.amazon.firelauncher`
I recommend getting additional apps from F-Droid rather than adding Google apps and services. This thing has enough spyware on it as it is.
