Confirmed: UFS 2.0 storage (yay!) - Google Pixel XL Guides, News, & Discussion

Having UFS 2.0 storage is going to make this phone behave like a proper flagship. Slow filesystem performance has been my main complaint with Nexus phones and my Pixel C up to this point. This should go a long way towards improving the user experience.
Edit: The Pixel phones also have USB 3.1 Gen 1 (formerly called USB 3.0), meaning that file transfers are possibly going to be significantly faster. Those of us on XDA will be very happy about this, as transferring files to and from the phone will most likely be a lot faster now.

I am excited about this!

I've always looked over the Samsung fence in awe of their UFS, very glad this made the cut. Now to try and find a USB C 3.1 retrofit for my PC :/

Also just remember, too. USB 3.1 Gen 1 is just the new name for USB 3.0. Both are 5 Gbps. If you have a USB 3.0 port, you have USB 3.1 Gen 1. That card I linked is a Gen 2, which supports the 10 Gbps speed.

Thanks, but I only have a Mini ITX with a GTX 1080 filling its ONE PCI Port
Good point about Gen 1, I don't think even UFS will max out a 5Gbps bus though. What I'm really after is USB C PD in a computer which is going to be costly and require a lot of new bits methinks.

Yeah that's a whole other ball of wax. I wonder if there is a USB PD power injector kind of like they have for PoE. If not, there's your million dollar idea

Asus has a unit that fits in a 5.25 slot (another luxury my tiny computer case doesn't have) that connects to some wacky connector that looks like 4 sata slots as well as 2 12v molex that can do USB PD but what do you know, you need a specific motherboard that costs the world.

Most of the new Z170 chipset motherboards have the gen 2 usb c slot.
I know mine does.

Mine does too.

You need SATA express and molex/sata power to get USB C PD on your front panel, I don't think the embedded Mobo ports can push out 30W.

Here's a great post with more info and a video on UFS2.0 vs EMMC5.1 found in the 6P

Cheaper cable for charging only I suppose. 3.0 C cables are much thicker.

Most people don't have a PC that has a type C port, so no need to waste cash on a 3.0. Also, I don't know of any LONG length type C cables that even support 3.0+ USB standard while also supporting fast charge via type C standards. At least they were nice, unlike Samsung, to include a C to C AND a true USB 3.0 A to C (Samsung's are A to C 2.0).

One has to think in the future... if that is available they should have included a c-c 3.0
If this a phone that whats to be compared to iphone 7, they can't cut corners!!!

If only they added f2fs with Moto Z mount options over it and lazytime mount option and dynamic f-sync. THEN it'll be equivalent to a high-end desktop ssd.

The A15 SOC is capable of USB 3.0; whether or on it is actually put to use, I have no idea. If it isn't, hopefully a developer can find a way to make it work.
In theory it should be USB 3.0 since the Exynos 5250 supports it, however it may be a moot point if the CPU and flash memory can't handle 3.0 speeds.
The new ARM based chromebook is also based on Exynos 5520 with 2g of ram etc and is also made by Samsung, so we can expect (??) this chromebook would have similar performance with the N4 (the chromebook does have lower resolution, which does not affect the speed of usb ports). According to Anandtech.com's review of the chromebook
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6422/samsung-chromebook-xe303-review-testing-arms-cortex-a15/2
"The USB 3.0 port is a bit useless on the new Chromebook. I dusted off my trusty Zalman SLC NAND USB 3.0 drive, capable of delivering more than 80MB/s and copied a 2.8GB file to the internal NAND. I timed the process and came away with an average transfer rate of around 12.7MB/s - well within the realm of USB 2.0 performance. Given the Exynos 5 Dual SoC features an integrated USB 3.0 controller, it's possible Samsung just wanted to take advantage of the feature and perhaps test its implementation. It's a nice checkbox feature but it does nothing for the end user as far as I can tell."
See also anand's comments about the hdmi out.
Disclaimer: Chrome OS of course is different from Android and these are two hardwares, so the two could have very performance... But until the devices are actually released I hope that anand's review could be of some use...

Nobody has it, so I wouldn't expect a response for two more weeks.
It should.
I found, sorry I still cannot post links, it should be v2.0
I only hope, it will be possible to attach an external storage without any mods or extra adapters.

Nothing with USB 3.0 and Gigabit Eth?

Hi everyone,
I have a MK808 but I need something that can have gigabit ethernet and USB 3.0. I'm now using a HTPC at home and I have gigabit network at home, so falling back to 10/100 on USB2.0 is not something I like. Same for HDD speeds.
Would there be anything in the market with USB3.0 and GigEth and/or e-Sata etc? I heard about Samsung HomeSync but it seems not available yet (and pretty expensive!)

there's no cheap(ish) SoC with usb3 or native gigabit 3 support at this moment, you'll have to wait at least 2014 for the next generation.
probably your best option will be the new wave of bay trail minipc that will get out next year.
Yeah, looks like. The two boards that came to my sight are the Arndale and Odroid-XU. Odroid-XU is interesting. Both have USB3.0 ports so can accomodate a gigeth and USB3.0 disk. Arndale also seems to carry a sata interface... Both are pretty expensive, but Odroid-XU is tempting

check http://cubieboard.org/tag/cubietruck/ it has native sata and gigabit ethernet - cpu is a bit underpowered (allwinner a20, more or less on par with your mk808) but as those interface arent built over usb2 they should perform nicely.
this too has to be released but it should be nearly ready and pretty cheap, with good linux support if needed.
Thanks. Interesting indeed. However I think we need to check if this CPU really has the sata data lines or if it is bridged through some USB 2.0 bus.

from a20 datasheet:
● GMAC
–Comply with the IEEE 802.3-2002 standard
–Programmable frame length to support Standard
or Jumbo Ethernet frames with size up to 16KB
–Support 10/100/1000Mbps data transfer rates
RGMII interface to communicate with an external
Gigabit PHY
● SATA
–One SATA Host controller
–Support SATA 1.5Gb/s and SATA 3.0Gb/s
–Comply with SATA spec 2.6
–Support external SATA(eSATA)
allwinner a31 got the gbit interface but its missing sata interface, rockchip soc are missing both.
So I add the cubbieboard to the mix as well. I'm not sure if these carry SPDIF output though for optical DTS & AC3 5.1 sound.
I also saw the Utilite. It has dual gigeth, DVI and HDMI outputs. It also has mSATA and SPDIF. Based on Freescale i.Mx6 A9 1.2ghz. But it does not have USB3.0, it's a pity In this case, I would need to make some hole in the case to take out the mSATA port as a SATA port and maybe connect it to some external HDD station.

Galaxy S8 USB protocol

Does anyone know for sure whether the S8 uses USB 3.1 Gen 2, USB 3.1 Gen 1, USB 3.0, or USB 2.0? And what charging standard it uses within that protocol?
Looking at the unboxings out there so far on pre-releases, it looks like the charger is a black versions of the same as last year's phones, which only supported USB 2.0 with QC 2.0, even though the SD820 supported USB 3.1 Gen 1 and QC 3.0
3.1

And to op, its hardly going to be anything less than 3.0 as a minium, even the S5 had that! Whether its 3.1 gen1 or gen2 I haven't been able to find out (much like I havent been able to find out whether it supports UHS-II or UHS-III SD cards either, samsung doing a great job in providing proper specs as usual).

No idea, probably nothing but i'd rather be buying future proof gen2 cables that i can use for anything and everything for the foreseable future than gen1 cables that run at half the speed, and if I get gen2 cables it would be nice to get full speed out of them. Not that bothered but I would have hoped for gen2 out of the very latest high end high priced flagship device.

Thanks! I had been to that page, but didn't notice you could expand that section. At least it's really 3.1 - I was afraid they were going to stick us with something lower for no real reason like they did on the S7.
To everyone who doesn't know, 3.1 gen 1 is the same as 3.0, they just renamed it. 3.1 gen 2 is up to 10 Gbps, while gen 1 is up to 5 Gbps. Realistically, even at gen 1, speeds are going to be limited by the storage of the phone/computer/device, not the usb type. Thus, 3.1 gen 1 (3.0) is more than adequate for almost anything people will be doing with this phone, even tethering.

Not exactly. USB 3.1 Gen 1 added specs to allow a USB-C connector on top of the existing standard, allowing cable backward compatibility from the 24-pin (actually 12-pin reversible) 10Gbit Gen 2 with older 9-pin USB 3.0 devices for charging and data transfer. It's basically a required middle step so that all USB-based USB-C devices can work together.

Fair enough, but my point still stands, there's no performance/speed difference between 3.1 Gen 1 and 3.0.
Ok then if its a USB 3.0 cable (usb c to usb a, i think thats correct) will that allow fast charging as well as data, if its 2.0 Usb it wont correct? I know some Anker cables have had issue with full power charging, do we know or have a clue which ones will work on the S8's??

Not exactly. USB3 and USB3.1 operate at the same speed but to be USB3.1 certified the vendor is held to a higher standard.
Old thread now I know, but let me get this right - the S8 has a C-type with full 3.1 speed, yet they deny you this out of the box by only supplying a basic cr4ppy 2.0 cable. Hardly makes sense for a flagship device, does it?

Dual USB Stick for OP5

Hey guys,
since Thema OP5 is using USB C I can't use my micro USB to USB A dual stick anymore. Is there a dual USB with a USB C Port to use it with the OP5 that you'd recommend.
From what I've read, the sandisk ones are overheating easily and therefore drop massively in writing speed.
Thanks in advance.
Do you mean one of these?

Built for Bluestacks (initially)

A buddy of mine needed me to build him a working PC out of 3 different machines: Dell Optiplex, Compaq Presario, and a cheapo eMachines. My payment was the leftovers . Out of the mess I was able to build his computer, plus assemble one for myself: he got the eMachines and I kept the Dell and Compaq, which also works, since he only wanted one decent PC.
Optiplex 790 mini tower
3.1 GHz intel i5-2400 quad core
7 GB RAM
Seagate 250 GB HDD (later upgraded to 500 GB SSD)
Additional 500 GB and 160 GB HDDs for storage (all drives SATA)
Onboard intel Graphics (later upgraded to nVidia Quadro 600 1024 MB dual display with 1 DVI [adapted into VGA] and 1 DisplayPort [adapted into HDMI] { I dropped the ball on port types, forgot to even look at what I was buying })
2.4/5 GHz dual band wifi network card w/ dual antennas
ATI USB Media Remote
Windows 7 Professional
I currently have 3 pointing devices connected: Logitech Trackball mouse, Monoprice Pen Tablet, and Microsoft Mouse / keyboard combo. I occasionally have a small hanheld trackball mouse attached, and an Apple USB keyboard with 2 USB ports, (like I should need more, the tower has 10 built-in USB ports already.)

Oh yes, I do agree on that, except, I did mention "initially" as to it's purpose; Steam and Epic games are the main hubs I use on it.
Did forget to mention . . . I only spent $60 on the whole system, and that was the price for the nVidia card
