My view & photoshopped pic of what Pixel devices should have been - Google Pixel XL Guides, News, & Discussion

Going from being a Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 6, & Nexus 5x user, this is my feeling of what Google had to do to knock it out of the park....At this point I won't buy it unless the price drops a lot. For now I'm sticking with my Nexus 6. If it dies, I'll probably buy a Nexus 6P and load some XDA roms.
Attached is an image I photoshopped of how I wish the bezels looked and a possible option for a qi charger that would have had a panel to allow for Qi, because I think the aluminum cases interfere with Qi? But just an idea and venting...

IMO ugly sorry. Pixels official design wins who cares if it looks like an iphone remotely. Haters got 2 hate then dont get 1

I would hate the OPs design. I already think the bottom bezel is too small on my 6P to comfortably touch the navigation buttons (I have big hands, long fingers).
Your design would be even worse in that regard.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk

That looks like possibly a better fit for many....

You can't have the top speaker and camera in the same spot unless you want a massive bump on the back.

Front looks cool but the back looks terrible imho. Also what is the huge obsession with Qi charging? I used it with my nexus 4 and it was slow/gimmick at best. I got over it fairly quickly. The new rapid charging standard seems way better. I know google might be embellishing on the claim of 7 hours of battery in 15 mins but even if its close to this in real life I'm with it.

Insanely ugly

You also have to design it with the insides in mind. you can't cram 200+ features into a phone and expect it to have a low profile.

Try this out. Notification on rear glass only active when face down. Slightly slimmer bezels (OP was too aggressive). And of course the pixel light bar.
Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk

I like your idea of a Pixel light bar like the Pixel C has. It does somewhat waste battery, but it gives it a unique identity like a glowing Apple logo.

I will play too. Nothing too drastic, though. I like the phone as is.
1. I added a second speaker grille. I pushed both of them to the edge (similar to the old M9 prototype that never came to be).
2. I put the pixel light bar in the top speaker grille.
3. Shortened the chin.
4. Shortened the glass on the back. Gave it a bit more character.

Would have been awesome to have a smaller, shorter version of that light bar on the center of the bottom bezel and have it blend into the bezel to be unseen when not lit up like the the Nexus 4 notification light. Then have each color light up sequentially when you get notification and have it move to the Google Assistant voice, Knight Rider style.

Why is the Note 4 heavier and less portable?

Can someone tell me why is the Note 4 both larger in size, thicker in thickness and heavier in weight despite having exact the same size screen and virtually the same size battery?
Probably to make it less bendable.

Apple has proved metal is more bendable than plastic. So what is the real reason why Note 4 is heavier and fatter?
Is it because all the conspicuous metal around the side?
so Note 4 is heavier, more bendable and has less reception than the Note 3 and more expensive?

The Note 4 is actually slightly narrower which should make it a slight bit more comfortable in hand as width is the most impactful dimension. The differences are so slight that you'd never be able to notice it hand - though after holding the Note 4 at Best Buy, I do think it's the metal frame along with the larger home button. I'd say all of the weight difference is from the frame as well.
Note 4 153.5 x 78.6 x 8.5 mm 176g
Note 3 151.2 x 79.2 x 8.3 mm 168g
1. The metal frame is noticeably more substantial than the chrome colored plastic trim on the Note 3. And after holding it and trying to bend the Note 4, the huge increase in rigidity and feel is absolutely worth it. The Note 4 actually feels like a premium device - it's very very good.
2. The home button is slightly larger, probably for a more reliable fingerprint scanner than the S5. The home button feel is also much better on the Note 4 than the Note 3 (which had that annoying slack).
3. I don't know where you're getting more bendable (the phone feels massively more rigid than the Note 3) , more expensive (same price in the US - though your market may vary), or worse reception (no test has mentioned this and the radios have no problem with the plastic back - this isn't an all metal phone).
Really once you hold the Note 4 in hand - both the improvements in the body and the screen are impressive.

Yes it does. Are we watching the same video? You see how Note 3 just bounce right back? This level of strength is not something that you will find in iPhone 6 or Note 4.
Plus, no one still have provided me with which the Note 4 is fatter and heavier?
It just demonstrates the Note 3 performs better that the iPhone 6+ in that particular test.
The Note 4 is actually thinner, as Daweet pointed out.

That's an unsophisticated statement - the issue is not a materials problem but a design problem. It's like saying a F1 car carbon fiber monocoque cracked in a 40mph collision where a rally car steel frame did not, therefore carbon fiber is weaker.
A good explanation is here: http://np.reddit.com/r/gadgets/comm...test_iphone_6_plus_followup/ckrzrsi?context=3
The problem with the iPhone 6 chassis comes from something we call "stress concentration" in engineering and this phenomenon is related to the geometry of an object. More specifically, it has to do with the cross section profile that is being bent.
If you watch the bending test video, you'll notice that iPhone 6 bent exactly at the root of the volume buttons. And if you look even more closely, you'll notice that the bending is actually on just one side -- the side of the volume buttons. The opposite side is actually mostly unscathed.
This is because the cross section area of the bending profile decreases dramatically right at that point. They have cut out a hole to accommodate the volume buttons, and when under loading, the internal stresses of the structure are being concentrated at the base of this cutout. So when the structure fails, it fails at that point. The lower cross section area decreases the resistance to bending, and makes it possible to bend the chassis at a lower applied force than what it would take otherwise, had the volume buttons not been there (but of course they have to be there).

Why are all of your posts negatively discussing the Note 4? It is not noticeably heavier.. and the size is better to hold.. and it is marginally bigger. Not much at all.

The difference from note 3 to note 4 is nearly imperceptible. You are just complaining.
Aluminium is a soft metal but apple hiding behind that is a joke they made no shape just a flat bit of soft metal so of course it bends. Htc made their phone with shape. Try bend that. Looking forward to feeling a note 4. Looks solid!

One feature of the heart rate monitor that Im sure a lot of people would use is its ability to take front facing cam pics by tapping it. Much easier than trying to take a pic with the on screen button. Especially if you are a small handed individual.
I do think you are over analyzing the size difference a little too much. These are millimeters in difference in size and weight. Go play with one and you would be hard pressed to believe it is any different than the note 3. It actually feels better to me due to the slightly tapered metal edge and slightly narrower profile. To each his own I guess.

I did, and Samsung reply was
"We are too stupid that is why. We thought it would be cool to fit every little BS features into a tiny phone to compete with Apples on the number of useless features. You know things like heart rate monitor, IR bluster, sandwich cooker etc."
Lol it seems like the op is someone desperately trying to believe his Note 3 is better than the 4. You don't have to upgrade every year but don't be so jealous.
The metal frame and vast improvement in feel, the amazing screen, OIS and improved camera, the improved fingerprint scanner over the S5, and even the heart rate sensor to take selfies easily all make a much superior phone.

Pinstriped bezel

Since this subforum is so dead, I figured I'd make some small talk...
Am I the only one who loves their notification LED? I was very disappointed to see the gray demo units at Best Buy actually have a pinstripe pattern under the glass that noticeably obscures/dulls the LED, and the pattern is even applied over the touchkeys, so they have a weird, wavy look to them. A foolish decision by Samsung, IMO.

Well if they did it for any reason on purpose it is stupid. I usually don't mind software related mishaps with LED because apps and kernel devs usually give us a ton of options to workaround it. But this is the way they designed the phone from a manufacturing standpoint. Blah.

I don't like the pinstripes; period. Last three plus years, the plain black bezel matched to the dark super Amoled native screen gave the black Galaxy a certain distinction that other OEMs with LCD couldn't match with their lighter looking native screen. Not appreciating this look; not so bad under low light but that wasn't the reaction Samsung hoped for. Thumbs down; face Palm. Not liking either of the browsers included either. Why no auto fit? Samsung's response is that natively, auto-fit exists; reset your settings. Nope. Second response: you can manually adjust the screen with pinch to zoom/minimize. Otherwise, I'm very pleased with this phone and look forward to development in this forum.

How big is the air gap of the display?

I always loved the laminated screens, yes even before apple sold it as innovation, and after seeing some videos it seems like the air gap of the Moto x style is pretty big. How visible is it in daily use if you are used to laminated screens for a long time?
Pretty sure it's laminated. If not, it must be a very small air gap because I don't notice much, if any, difference between how close the pixels are to the surface vs my wife's iPhone 6.
Thanks, that sounds good. I can see a gap though on most YouTube videos where the device is shown from different angles you can clearly see that the black edges of the screen disappear or get bigger depending on the angle. Which means there is a gap. But if it's not really noticeable on regular usage it would be fine for me. Still waiting for my ordered 64gb version in Germany. The delay is bad and makes me think about cancelling and getting an nexus 6p instead...

Hm. I haven't seen that, but maybe it's because I have the black front model. Possibly easier to notice on the white front model.
I have a white model and can't see any gap, regardless of viewing angle. If there is a gap, I can't see it.
It could also be from the rounded glass on the edge.
I had a GS6 before this and the gap is noticeably bigger on the Pure. It's not bad at all and you certainly habituate to it but it was noticeable.

Why are u moving from s6 to moto x if u don't mind me asking. For stock Android exp?

Definitely want minimal gap for this phone as well. Makes the screen seem to float.
Doubt there is air gap. Hardly any phones have air gap these days. Usually relegated to the lowest end phones with cheapest components. The 'gap' might be due to the moto x ha ing gorilla glass 3 and not 4. GG3 is thicker than 4. They both have same strength, just GG4 is thinner. It has made nice difference almost touching the actual display. My Motorola atrix is a canyon compared to my recent phones in regards to air gap.

The S6 is my first Samsung device which is not a Nexus. I was hoping that they learned from their past mistakes but I found following issues:
- battery life was good at first and now it's just plain bad. In the morning I unplug the device with 100 %. And it loses 20 percent in the way to the office with only a few minutes onscreen time.
- I don't give a ... that the s6 has great benchmarks. In real life this hardware beast stutters and is slower than my old N5. This may be different for games, but I dont play 3d games on smartphones. I think TW is still the culprit here. Basically Samsung is using high end specs and killing them off with their stupid overlay. Even though the UI is getting better, the Samsung add ons to Android seem to bog down the whole experience.
- I hate the fact that I hit the capacitive buttons all the time when holding the device in landscape. That doesn't happen with onscreen buttons since my hands can rest on the bezel.
- the fingerprint scanner is slow as hell. It's a joke compared to my iPhone 6.
These are the reasons I really look forward to get the Moto x. For me they tick all the right boxes.

Could also be the case. But the result is the same for the users eye. It looks like a gap, I can clearly see the black edges changing their size depending on the angle you look at the device. But as most say it's not a huge thing I hope I'll be OK with it.
I was one of the people really hating the ipad air because of the gap. Back then my colleagues said it doesn't matter. But one year later Apple introduced the laminated screen. And everybody was freaking out.

Mostly that you keep claiming there is an air gap when you haven't even seen the phone in person. I have the phone in my hand and I don't think there is one, thought the glass might be a tiny bit thicker than the Galaxy S6. By the way, I looked at my friend's white iPhone 6 Plus and the black border around the edge of the display also changes size when viewing it from different angles, so I don't think that indicates that the screen isn't laminated.

The thread is a question. So I'm not claiming anything just stating what I can see on HD videos. And one guy with a s6 confirmed my impression. So it might be the screen glass, it might be an air gap. It doesnt matter, if the result is the same visually.
I was just curious to know and some people seem to notice it, others don't. Well my Moto X is already under way and I will see it myself soon.
Honestly the more I see about the Nexus 6p the more I like it. I'll get a nexus 6p as work phone and the style is my private phone. Eager to see which one will wind up becoming my main phone.

This kind of reactions remind me of the discussions I had when the first devices with pentile amoled screens arrived back then (nexus one). It looked like crap, but one of the inventors tried to convince everybody on xda that the human eye can't see the pentile matrix on a hvga resolution.
The point is: it's great if you don't see it. Be happy.

No, that's not what it's about. With an air gap the image on the screen doesn't look like it's printed on the screen (which is more pleasant to the eye). And when you interact with the screen, a small or nonexistent air gap will have a better UX because it feels more immediate to touch an image which is as near to the screen/digitizer surface as possible.
The best example is the first ipad air. It felt totally awkward because the gap was huge. Much bigger than the previous ipads. Apple didn't make a big deal out of the laminated screen with no reason.

Likelihood of screen burn in?

I was wondering if anyone with knowledge on current amoled displays could speak to potential screen burn in issues. The last amoled screen I had on a phone was the S4, and found burn in and color shift to be a bit of an issue. I know Samsung in particular has made some pretty remarkable strides since then in terms of the technology, but with this not being a high end Samsung panel, where does amoled currently sit in regards to burn in and color shift?

Okay cool, that's really good to know. I babied the hell out of my S4, so I was super bummed when it developed the burn in. I know more recent iterations of Android have designed elements with that in mind, so hopefully that coupled with newer technology will mean it won't be a problem.

I had a look at an in store demo note 4 today - severe burn in! Now I know it's an artificial situation - brightness on full and same rotating images but it's still a worry. I wonder if Google would do a 6o warranty replacement for burn-in?

Historically, yes. Even more certain if you get Nexus Protect.
Don't know if you've heard, but just in case you haven't, 6P will have the latest Samsung panels, which I would expect to be similar to the one they put in the Note 5. Hopefully the burn in will less likely. I have a Note 4 and haven't noticed any burn in.

Yep, confirmed: Nexus 6P has the latest generation panels from Samsung. One of things we deeply care for is the quality and accuracy of the display through which all of us connect with the stuff we care about. We created a very tight spec (white-point temperature, delta-E variance, color-space accuracy, etc) for the 6P WQHD AMOLED panel, so it was important that we use the most cutting edge panel technology available.

I'm in Ireland so no Nexus Protect just sky high prices - €700 for a 6p
Newest tech doesn't mean "this is the same screen Samsung uses on their S6 line."
Could simply mean that "besides our Super Amoled series of screens we use on the S6 line, the nexus 6p uses the newest tech".

Yea I agree with the above that it's Most likely not the same as the Note5 screen, as Samsung only uses Super Amoled which is higher quality in their own gadgets, while selling just the Amoled to the Other companies.
Having said that, I personally think the whole Burn out fiasco is really hyped alot more than it should be. Personally I Love super Amoled screen, and once you use it, I think it's an extreme eye sore to go to IPS which unfortunately happened when I went from the GS1 to the Moto Atrix, then back to the GS2 then with the nexus 4 and 5 have hated the IPS panels.
BUT, I kept my GS2 for 2 years, and just at the end of it I started to notice the burn in Only in the status bar, nowhere else. As not only the tech has come a long way since then, but also as others mentioned, there are numerous ways to combat/prevent said burn in so its really not something people should keep complaining about as if every person who uses a Amoled screen gets burn out within a few months.
I would take that risk tho any day to get to use the brilliant colors of Amoled, esp the truly Black Blacks...

I've had the S4 for going on three years and have experienced no burn in. I did recently read this nice little article...

Only thing that bothers me is the solid black control bar in apps and on most screens, why didn't Google make it transparent like on the home screen or Google now on tap

What I would really like is an immersive mode quick toggle for the stock rom.

It's a feature available on a lot of custom roms. Basically it's full screen mode where the status and navigation bars are hidden. Then you can just swipe up from the bottom of top to make them pop up.

LMT launcher worked amazing on the nexus 6 . i removed the bar in build.prop and installed LMT launcher . i have my nexus 6P now (rooted) but have not had a change to try this yet .
swipe navigation works great too. I prefer it to LMT

Looks ugly
Hasn't really changed much. Still too much bezel on the bottom and that stupid notch.

Exactly, I thought the point of the notch was to increase the screen size but seems like some of the manufacturers don't get this and the bezel is still too big on the bottom. I really don't like this whole notch craziness and hoping it will fade away in the next couple of years...

That was the first impression I had, the notch is realy BIG, probably the biggest i've seen in any phone. Its the size of 2 statusbars or more...

Props for posting those images , it's nice to see what it's going to look like , although not liking that notch , had high hopes the p3xl too , sad to see though
A massive notch and a chin. That's horrible
I really really hope that the pixel 3xl looks like this.. coz then i will have no temptation to upgrade
On a serious note, this would be one of the dozens of the 'potential' final prototypes. Just look up the video of how one plus went through multiple iterations before getting to the final design. Google is not that stupid to keep such a big notch.
If they took away the bottom speaker and didn't have any chin, then people would complain about no stereo speakers lol. That notch is kinda big tho

So the back is confirmed to be made of glass?

Yes totally glass. The top part is glossy and the bottom is matte but it's a single part. This way google tried to conserve the aesthetics of pixel 2 but I think it does'nt add any fonctionality.

Assuming you mean functionality, actually the glass back would allow for wireless charging.
It may also allow new/different features with regards to the newly rumored 'pixel dock'.

Yes the glass panel is probably for wireless charging, but I was talking about the fact that this back panel is seprated in two parts, one glossy in the top and one matte in the bottom(it's hard to see in the picture but it's there). This is esthetically resembling to the pixel 2, but what's the purpose as the whole back panel is made of glass while the back panel of the pixel 2 xl is made of metal and only the top part is glass to allow signals reception.

Im fairly certain, its a single piece of glass, with the matte part being applied, or the glass is etched.
and the whole back needs to be glass as wireless charging wont work through aluminum (pixel 2XL), nor would the wireless charging receptors inside the phone fit in the current glass area, let alone the fact it would be very hard to make a pad that would line up properly if they were in the current glass panel.
was this lost and found at a bar ..lol
Hi OP,
If you're willing to talk about the device you have, please reach out to me at [email protected] or [email protected] if you would prefer a more secure avenue.
I run the XDA Portal and am very interested in what you've obtained.

I dunno if I would go that far.
The notch simulator in android P has a notch taller than the one in the pics here, though it doesnt look to be as wide. Obviously this doesn't mean the one on the Pixel will be that large, but with google you never know.
In the simulator, the notch is the exact height of the menu bar background.
Well...I'm a bit disappointed as a pixel 2 xl owner. The bezel is so insane...
But where's the dual lens camera? I mean yes the pixel 2 xl takes the best photos still. But the dual lens setup affords a lot more opportunities for shots. Still 4 GB ram - and google expects to sell this for 800-900?
I don't see a huge reason to upgrade yet. But I didn't see a reason to get the pixel 2 last year. So we will see...
