Samsung Galaxy S5 Marshmallow 6.0.1 - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear XDA Members
I'm new to this forum and this website so please mind my knowledge.
I've been scouting the webs for an answer that I've never found...
I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 (SM-G900F) that I've upgraded to Marshmallow
The baseband version is G900FXXU1CPB8
I've been waiting months to find a guide to root this phone
I found the Chainfire package and I've tried to root but failed resulting in a hard brick
I've upgraded to Marshmallow again in hope to find a correct guide
I have found out that unlocking the Bootloader is the key but when I go into Developer Options, Enable OEM Unlock is not there
I'm trying to find a way to unlock the Bootloader and root my phone... Please help
From: Akhil Hansrajh

Who told you that the unlock the bootloader is in developer options

It's in security option then uncheck on reactivation lock
After that flash the root file with odin

I'm guessing that I need to use my Samsung Account?

The G900F bootloader is already unlocked. The red no need to enable OEM unlock and so such button exists. You can root by flashing TWRP and supersu

Can you guys provide a link for the TWRP? I can't find any reliable links
Do I have to flash TWRP first or do I install the Chainfire package?

@1stcowgirl please make links public and share the source of those links for 2 reasons.
1) Other members might be in need of that very information.
2) Your reluctance to make these assets public knowledge makes it *look* like you are trying to hide something....I'm sure this is not the case but it could be interpreted as such.

[Q] Root and S-OFF phone requirements (kernel?, knox?, build number?

Hi All,
In the past I successfully rooted, S-OFF and installed custom ROMs in my previous phones (HTC Desire, Galaxy 2 & 4 if not mistaken) with the help of this forum, thanks all!
Since last summer I have a Galaxy 5 (I changed homes and Verizon is the only carrier that provides reliable service in my area, so I had to "upgrade" (sarcasm) from my Galaxy 4)
Now I want to root and (if recommended) S-OFF my phone following the instruction provided here, but before starting I want to know what are the minimum requirements (if any!) in terms of Kernel, Build Number, KNOX version... etc to succeed.
I'm attaching screenshots showing the info displayed under the "About phone" menu
If someone that had gone through this process wants to share his/her own experience, please do it. It was quite a long time ago since the last time I embarked in those tasks, so please be as explicit as possible
Thanks in advance for your support.

S-off is only for HTC devices, so it doesn't apply here. I believe you need to follow the instructions in this guide but start at step 4:

I checked that, but it says : "**You can begin the following process from any Build/ROM but you must already have Root Access**"
Mine is not rooted yet, can you direct me to a post with proven instructions to do that?

Like I said in my previous reply, start with step 4. Read step 4 first and go from there.
Now I got it, you mean point 4 in the notes section!
I'll check that when at home, but I checked the link to download the file and it says "Samsung Galaxy 4"... would it be valid for my phone?
Rgds!

Oh, yes sorry. Point 4 in the notes. I read that the file is just improperly named. It is the correct file for the galaxy S5.

Hi Again!
In point number 1 of the procedure (1. Place the ROM onto your device (use either internal or ext-sdcard).), to which ROM does it refer? The procedure ask to download 2 files right before that, both with ROM names on it:
- G900V_OC4_Stock_Rooted_ROM
- G900V_OC4_Stock_DeOdexed_ROM
Which one should I place in my device?
Rgds!:good:
I would recommend the one that say stock rooted if you don't plan on theming or using xposed. If you plan on using either of those choose the deodexed one.
Update - Job done!
Just a quick update
I can confirm that the procedure described here worked for my Verizon SG5 under Android 5.0. Thanks to all that made that possible!
I would just comment that in order to disable KNOX, you can follow the procedure posted here
Now I'm working in removing the bloatware of my phone (hopefully without removing any required component to keep the phone working!). Any advise in that sense will be appreciated.
Rgds!

[MoFo] XT1096 and AT&T XT1097 - Do NOT take the 5.1 OTA if you want to keep root

We can stay on the 5.0/5.0.2 bootloader (motoboot.img) and partition table (gpt.bin) and flash rooted 5.1 images using MoFo as well as the 5.1 kernel and radios using fastboot. Details for the XT1096 are here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61685122&postcount=46
Do not take the 5.1 OTA - flash manually!!!
If you upgrade to the 5.1 bootloader and partition table - YOUR COPY OF MOFO.EXE WILL NO LONGER WORK FOR YOUR DEVICE!!!!
There was a little bit of weirdness when I flashed the rooted image and tried to go into recovery to wipe cache - the dead android kept flashing at me and I couldn't get into the recovery menu. So then I flashed the 5.1 recovery. It is working fine now. I think I will flash back to 5.0 and then reflash it to see if that happens again.

Excellent news! Thanks @JulesJam!
We all learned a lot with our prior MoFo experience, so here's hoping the features are added to the 5.1 ROM with less troubleshooting this time.
Where is the rooted copy you used?
Can the mofo crew just update the binary to read the new gpt?

I am not sure what you are talking about.
MoFo.exe relies on an exploit to trick the bootloader to allow you to flash an unsigned system image. According to maiko1, the exploit was patched in the 5.1 bootloader. Supposedly he is working on trying to find an exploit in the 5.1 bootloader that he can use to do the same thing but only time will tell if he can find one.

I didn't post it anywhere yet b/c of the issues I was having. @mikeoswego has a rooted image that he baked useful features into. When he posts his, I will just flash that and see how it works. He has a thread in the Android Development section of this forum where he posts his images.

I thought it was that it could not verify your device because of the way it read your info on the device. I assumed he used a zero day he had to attack the verification step of fastboot. I had thought about attacking in this manner. I mean, without busybox, can we try normal Linux shell privilege escalation attacks for this kernel version just like a desktop Linux machine? Are there any previous root methods and how they were obtained? I still say at this point, it would be great to be told what the exploit was, even without code.

So it was specific to the bootloader, do we know at which version it became patched?

I think if the exploit has been patched, he should release what the exploit was as there is no harm at this point in releasing that information. Someone should ask him to do that.
The exploit was posted awhile ago according to jcase. What maiko didn't do was post his code for mofo because he owns that. If you want more info pm or tweet jcase.

You can't, A500F is snapdragon chipset, A5000 is exynos so won't work sorry. And Odin detects the exact model of each device when flashing so the only way it'll work is to port it

Telstra Australia Launched SM-G977B S10 5G

I haven't seen this listed anywhere since a search for this model number brings up nothing.
The Australian stock is the model SM-G977B
Its an Exynos version with the old UFS and the model given as part of the free upgrade promo (when you preordered the s10 plus), is a 512GB black variant.
I can't see much development being done for this since obviously no one has this model, but I'd love to be able to root it.
Hopefully more people will get this phone, and some dev can start. If there's anything I can do to get the ball rolling, let me know!
Root
Hey mate, I have already achieved root day one of receiving my device from this offer , I am by no means an advanced developer but technology is my passion. The process was simple due to it being the same process as topjohnwu already published. This is the official page for the instructions by topjohnwu which do work: topjohnwu.github.io/Magisk/install.html#samsung-system-as-root. If you struggle at any point feel free to reply. I will be posting this in the development threat for others so there aware.
As for TWRP, thats a different story, I have tried flashing TWRP from the s10+ and hoping it would work but it did not which was to be expected. So I am attempting my own build of TWRP by modifying the s10+ TWRP to match the s10 5G. Mind you I have never compiled TWRP or Android. I have mainly tinkered with iOS on apples hardware so no promises I'll figure it out nor that it will be bug-free but if I do manage to find it I'll post it for another developer to maybe check and fix.
But root is definitely possible as of now,
Happy rooting!.
Hwy thanks for that.
Do you still get updates? I've never rooted without a custom rom before?
Also, do you use exposed? Edexposed or virtual exposed? It's the main reason I want to root
Lastly where did u get the boot image from?
Thanks
Hey mate, over the air updates I believe do not work. To update you'd need to download the latest firmware and repatch the ap file. But I haven't done this. There is a forum post somewhere outlining the process though so I'll try and dig that up.
As for the exposed framework I haven't tested that out nor have I used it before but it is something I wanna dive into. The last time I tinkered with Android was years ago where exposed wasn't a big thing. But I have seen users state they've got it running from edxposed or something like that from the magisk add on panel. So I'll give it a try now and report back to you.
As for the firmware I cannot upload any links as I'm a new user. But if you shoot me an email [email protected] I'll be happy to send you the link I personally used.
