Yotaphone 2 users in the UK - YotaPhone

Hi guys,
I should be getting a Yotaphone 2 'yd206' next week, and the ebay seller has said it will work with all UK bands including B20 (800mhz) which is on the O2 network.
I thought only the yd201 worked with all UK bands, but can anybody who used the yd206 version clarify if it is working properly on thier UK network, particularly O2?
Thanks

Hi did the phone work with B20 (800mhz) ?
I have just ordered the phone, but have just realised that 4g may not work, unless I change network provider.

He's either lying or mistaken. The YD206 is the Chinese version which has only B1/B3 LTE (2100 and 1800 Mhz). B3/1800Mhz is used in the following countries: https://www.frequencycheck.com/bands/lte-band-3-1800
B1/2100Mhz works here: https://www.frequencycheck.com/bands/lte-band-1-2100
It should work with EE, Three, BT Mobile, Freedom Pop and The People's Operator on the 1800Mhz band. LTE won't work at all on O2 or Vodafone, and 800 Mhz rural coverage on Three (800Mhz) will be non-existent. http://www.4g.co.uk/4g-frequencies-uk-need-know/
I think there's also B41/2500Mhz LTE on the YD206, though I'm not 100% sure.: https://www.frequencycheck.com/bands/lte-band-41-td-2500
Some purportedly YD201 (800, 1800 and 2600Mhz for the whole UK) versions have been coming out of Hong Kong, but I have a hunch they're YD206s which have been flashed to register as YD201s, though they're still missing the 800Mhz band. Here's a new thread on how it's done: http://forum.xda-developers.com/yot...grade-yotaphone-2yd206-running-4-4-4-t3506293.
The one to go for, if you can find one (and they do cost more) is the Russian YD201. They sold out a couple of months ago and the current flood of Chinaphones hitting the market is because Rex Global of Hong Kong bought into Yotaphone with an agreement to pay down $43 million of debt. Dumping dead stock is a classic way of doing this - remember those killer devices the Blackberry Playbook and Nokia Pureview 808?

They don't just cost "more", they cost the same as an iPhone 6. Vastly overpriced is the term for the Yotaphone "russian" phones, actually manufactured in Singapore.
Plenty of British people already own Yotaphone in UK.

Thanks for the info, yeah I bought the Chinese version (YD206) with the snapdragon 801 processor, for 96GBP it was too cheap for me not to.
I will probably get a Three sim once I receive the phone.
Does anyone know if its worth flashing and then updating the devise to lollipop, from the pre-installed kitkat?
I ask because people have said in the past that this phones battery performance was compromised once lollipop was first updated on to the device.
I used to have a oneplus one (before I dropped and smashed it) which also had a SD801 processor, and when it was running kitkat I was literally getting days of standby time. When the phone was not in use, the battery level would hardly go down, but that quickly changed once lollipop arrived. Things got a bit better after a few incremental updates and then finally updating to marshmallow, but the battery life experienced on Kitkat was never to be had.
Does anyone know if this is the same with the Yotaphone, or is battery life with lollipop now just as good as it was with kitkat?

I do not recommend flash the device, because of problems with the e-ink screen, it happened to me, and can't solve this even flashing back to KitKat.

There are plenty of YD201s you can buy in and around Russia, both in stores and online, for around RU20,000, £250/$310. The rouble was in freefall until earlier this year so the US/European price is now much less than it was. Nothing like an iPhone 6.
I also bought a YD206 from Gearbest yesterday for £96, a no-brainer. They're selling hundreds of them until Monday, so I expect to see more community support for custom firmware and hacks. There's already a big Russian following, with a strong consensus in favour of the Lollipop upgrade for better power management etc. I'm waiting until I've owned it for a couple of months before attempting anything too adventurous.

Most people on here have successfully flashed their phones, particularly the cheap Chinese yd206 phones that don't have an option of doing an OTA.
In nearly all cases this is straightforward but if you read here, some have had problems.
My Russian lollipop Yd201 gets 4-5 hours heavy screen time on wifi. You can always go back to older ROM if you don't like the battery life on the lollipop version. There are more widgets, apps available on lollipop. If you go back to an older ROM , you should wipe user data too.
In Early 2015 , just last year, The Official UK Price Of The yotaphone 2 was 555 Pounds 699 Euros , More Expensive Than The Iphone 6 . Yes my Chinese yotaphone was 96 quid too, the dollar price quoted is dropping week on week due to the strengthening USA currency.

Thanks guys,
As long as i'm able to download my main apps, I think I'm going to stick with kitkat for the time being, and maybe in the future think about updating.
Reasons are:
1. I'm not very confident with regards to flashing, and as I'm on my 3rd phone this year due to a serious case of butter fingers, I really can't afford to ruin another phone for at least the next few months .
2. From my experience with my oneplus one, lollipop actually felt like more of a downgrade with regards to performance rather than an upgrade.
It would be great if someone was able to do a side by side test on this device, comparing the latest lollipop update with the YD206 Kitkat.
If Marshmallow or Nougat comes out on this device, I think I may be more inclined to update.
If anyone has any experiences comparing Kitkat with Lollipop, it would be greatly appreciated if you could share your experience.
Cheers

Have just received a YD206 from Gearbest for £96 and all text is in Chinese which I do not understand. Cannot therefore navigate the menu at all to select English language.
Eink screen appears dead.
I have not fitted a sim card. Will that make any difference to the language?

Try getting the correct setting for English language by first flicking down from top, first click on blue user symbol at top right, then click on the white cogwheel next on left for settings. Go through the settings, look for a symbol looking like planet (line 20). This is the language setting, click on the the top setting which is the language selection setting. I guess "English" should be in English language.
Of course it's shocking that they sent you a chinese language one.
Look out for Russian ROMs being in Russian too. Luckily I studied A level Russian.

Why are you defining yourself as a no-brainer? The YD206 just lacks of the 800MHz band, but it's still a Yotaphone 2! I'm asking because I bought one, too.

In English, A "no-brainer" is NOT someONE who is stupid, it means someTHING obvious that you don't have to even think about.
http://www.dictionary.com/browse/no-brainer?s=t
In this case he thinks it's very obvious that the price yd206 is such a good deal and he agrees with you.
I bought yd206 too.

Just got mine this morning from GearBest, so far the only concern I'm having is the fact that the response time is a little off, I type fast on my phone, and sometimes the keyboard doesn't pick up two separate taps and registers it as one, resulting in typos and a lot of backspacing.... Way to overcome this is to use one hand to type, and the speed at which you tap the buttons is not a problem.
Other than that, the phone is great. - Just having a hard time getting a screen protector on it :'(

mine works fine in english, no problem with the e ink screen, no sim card installed yet, sounds like yo might have a dud. Mine also came from Gearbest.

Have any UK users discovered the best radio files to flash? I'm using the Chinese radio but have a really patchy signal on EE. I see there are versions for other regions, worth a try?

Same problem here. Just flashed 5.0.0-HK1.1.66 on a chinese YD201, and now I have not more signal with Vodafone Uk. Should I flash russian version?

Hi guys ive been trying to get an o2 3g sim to work in the Yotaphone 2 YD201 ANDROID 6.0.1... BUILD RU1.1.47 everything works apart from sim card, it sees it as o2 in drop down but no signal and cant find it in carrier search. It sees EE but not 02...
Ive gone into the testing mode but in the UK which is going to be the preferred network type for o2, Ive the following options....
WCDMA, GSM, CDMA, EvDo, LTE, Lte/GSM there are others including unknown..., when I change this and reboot it seems to default back to WCDMA and picking the option doesnt hold.
Can anyone please suggest the best of the networks to pick and also how to save the selection in these settings.
Many thanks

Hi has anyone any idea on saving the settings in the testing phone mode I set it to GSM and reboot but it comes back to CDMA and the GSM option is lost.
Has anyone got 02 to work with this phone as its a good phone Ive got a EE sim to work but I prefer the O2 payg plans.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks

Is it possible to get the Leo working on AT&T in the US?

Is there a custom ROM in development to accomplish this? The Leo looks to be phenominal - just no due dates in the US.
TIA
I bought at expansys-usa.com.
Unlocked.
Regards.
Right on. Ty for the reply. So I should just be able to load up a custom Leo ROM, stuff in my simcard, and use all the AT&T contract features I currently use on my AT&T Tilt 2?
TY again!
Well, just keep in mind, the model being sold at expansys-usa is the Euro model, meaning no 3G service in the US. However, you can still place calls over GSM network (both ATT and T-Mobile) and use EDGE data connection.
Cheers,
S.
instead of rushing on getting one like i did you can wait till tmobile releases their's sometime around march(rumor) and get it unlock for att. This phone would be a lot better with 3g.
Thanks for all the info ya'll!
T-Mo and AT&T do not use same bands !!!
Please note that while AT&T uses 850Mhz band T-Mo uses the 1700Mhz. What will happen, if the T-Mo version will be 1700/2100 as I suspect, is that if it will be unlocked, even if it will show on screen it is on a 3G network, it will be for uploading only, and will not download a thing.
If the advise is to wait, I would wait until Telstra in Australia will start selling HD2, and import it from there, as their 'NextG' network is 850Mhz.
I know cause I just did the same with my HD. Got an aussie unit, and unlocked it. (internet buy)
As for myself, based on my 6 months experiance with the HD, I will get tomorrow my EU version. Yes, will not have 3G, but quite frankly, the 3G is almost useless for me because at leat on the HD it drained my 1350mAh battery pretty quick, being on 3G. I had to install WMlonglife and has been on a 2G network most of the time. Another thing - It is pretty easy to be on Wi Fi at home, at office, at starbucks, etc.. lots of free access points. For emails/SMS the 2G is good enough regardless.. So - I went with the EU version. BTW- I know expansys sells it for $784, but check www.networkingrus.com (hope I do not violate a forum rule, if I do, I appologise) but they sell for far less, and I have purchased 3 phones from them already, got great service and when I was over seas and my phone broke, I purchased one from them , and they shipped it to me there, it got stuck in customs, they got it back, and re-shipped to my other location while I was travelling. Very honest, and price is good.
Would i wait 3 moths? I would say yes if it was rock solid date, and guaranteed to work on the AT&T band. I decided not to wait any more, when SSPL already works (I am a 28014 addict)
Hope i helped here..

I agree....mine is an unlocked euro version too, and I am using mine on AT&T with no problems! It is even pretty fast on the Edge data network..... in addition, I use mine with my Verizon mifi modem for wifi, and it is blazing fast.....I am falling madly in love with my HD2 now that there are some custom roms available.....LOL
Later.....
BTW, I too got mine there.......they are great people to deal with!

Dang! I did not know of that place. I bought mine on ebay. It came with everything and a 8GB memory card instead of 2GB. Bought it for $764 + 8% cashback.
Also using mine on AT&T no prob
I bought a Euro model as well, using it in the US on T-Mo and not regretting a thing: IN fact, I had a HD the year before. No 3G, don't care.
On top of that, I got my wife a TP2 through T-Mo. She used it 10 days, finding the 3G to be disappointing. I didn't do a head to head between the T-Mo 3G and my EDGE, that would just be silly.
My concern about a T-Mo version of Leo, assuming the rumors are correct, is what happens to the T-Mo specific functions, and can it be flashed by one of the magnificent custom ROM's available here on XDA? The only T-Mo specific feature I can come up with is 5 fav.....but I'm not sure that's even offered anymore.
The question is.....just for laughs.....can a T-Mo branded Leo be flashed with a custom ROM?
Agreed with pretty much everyone who went and got their HD2 and using it on ATT or TMobile. I bought mine a week after ATT released the Tilt2. I sold my Tilt2 few days after I got the HD2. I never looked back and the device is sexy as hell. Enjoying it even more now because with custom ROMs the internal storage is sweet (as good as the TP2/Tilt2).
I purchased my Leo in Hong Kong knowing full well that it would not work on the 3G with AT&T. That was not my main concern. It works very well. Love it especially with some of the mods to have 20 shortcuts instead of 9.

unlocked phone is custom ROM ready..

Don't worry, if you get a T-MO leo when it is offered, you can always unlock it and put a cooked ROM on it, BUT, don't ever try to get serviced after, because they will deny any warranty repairs. Even for obvious malfunation you will be blamed it was a result of flashing..
I never buy the hardware from the service provider. as an AT&T customer i was dumb enough to get an iphone to my daughter, paid $199 for it, and got locked for two years with a monstrous 2 year contact of $43/month (text, broadband, $10 family line). Guess what - phone was broken (screen shattered) after 3 months. they say warranty does not cover screen. $200 repair, 2 years clock started again, phone got nroken again (this POS breaks when you give it a look !) so now I am locked with $43/month plan, and no iphone. yes, AT&T will not let you go even when they know you do not have an iphone any more. My daughter runs a LG vue and pays the $43 until 2011 !!! that has taught me the lesson... I get my phone for real hard cash and never lock myself with contracts... PS: $43 x 24 +199 = $1,231. Boy was i dumb, or what? My new HD2 was $717 +shipping...

Droid Pro on Virgin / T-Mobile UK 3G?

Hi all,
I am about to import an activated (with included Verizon unlock code) Droid Pro into the UK so all the essential bases should be covered. However, I saw that some people were having real problems with getting 3G reception on their Droid Pros in Europe. Does anybody have any experiences about using the Droid Pro in the UK, specifically on Virgin and/or T-Mobile??
Many thanks!

Mine has been fine. I used it for a while on T-Mobile, and I was able to pick up 3G or HSPA pretty much everywhere. I'm on 3 now, but I'm thinking about going back to T-Mobile because the 3 signal seems to cut out randomly, and I can't seem to access the internet very much. I went with 3 because they're the only ones that let you use up to 1GB, but what's the point, if you can't access it anyway?
Haha, yes very true. Check out Virgin! I am on a 15GBP/month plan with 500mins, unlimited texts and 1gb of internet, they use T-Mobile's lines thats why I was asking... Best deal I have found around so far! Oh and I should say its a pay-monthly contract.
Thanks so much for the quick reply, I will proceed to actually buying it... would you recommend it generally?

I don't really need that many minutes, so I've just been paying 10GBP. I've realized that I don't use cellular internet that much because my life pretty much consists of being at my flat, or being at school, and I have WiFi at both places. I just need a supplement on the rare occasions that I'm somewhere else, so 500MB should get me by.
I was kind of shocked to find out that internet here is so limited. I always thought Europe was way ahead of the U.S. in terms of speed and bandwidth.
Anyway, as far as the phone goes, I love mine. My favorite phone that I used back home was a Treo, and I fell in love with the front-facing keyboard. Unfortunately they don't have an Android phone like that that I can use on my network back home yet, but as soon as I realized I was going to be here for most of the year, I picked up a Droid Pro, and I've never regretted it. It's not perfect (read about the random reboots), but it's stable for the most part, and the wonderful form factor makes up for any minor faults.
Really? I feel that the internet here was pretty nice... I was using an HTC Touch Diamond2 on T-Mobile US last year and it just wouldnt switch into 3G due to band indifferences. It works on the EU networks like a charm though.. well it did I should say, HTC has no decided to charge me 220GBP to fix Newton rings on the touch screen which should be covered under warranty! I am very very annoyed with them; I was a loyal HTC customer for years.
Well not anymore, I ordered the Droid Pro activated and unlocked off Ebay for about 180GBP, your loss HTC. Have a look in my other thread by the way, Motorola just announced a EU version of the Droid Pro - untouched hardware! I would be very very interested in the ROM it comes with ... ) Might just help you with your reception on 3!

Have you set up the APN properly? I know I had to set up the APN when I switched to 3. I've never tried O2, so I don't know for sure, but that's the only guess that I've got.
Try the APN settings in this post:
http://forum.whatmobile.net/showpost.php?p=292435&postcount=4
Or, you can try entering your number on their website and seeing if they provide any suggestions for the settings:

I would also welcome an untouched ROM - I think with imported phones from the states the lock on the band limits the connection we get here in the UK with our unlocked phones.
My Droid Pro arrived today and I can confirm that it picks up 3G like a charm on the T-Mobile/Virgin UK lines. Reception is fairly good too, was never really strong where I live anyways but still quite speedy. So far now problems with any cut-outs, freezing etc... really stable. Did an OTA update as soon as I turned it on.
The seller fortunately supplied me with the original unlock code by verizon and it was pretty much just popping my card in, entering the code and boom it was ready to go.
Make sure when you want to import a Droid Pro into Europe:
* the seller is in good standing with Verizon
* the phone is not listed as having a bad ESN (impossible to activate!)
* asking the seller to activate it for you before it ships (so you can actually unlock it!)
* in my case, my seller was even kind enough to phone up Verizon for an unlock code, saves u the work of buying one.
Also, as in recent developments, Verizon seems to change the unlock codes OTA that makes it sometimes completey impossible to unlock it with one that u got of the internet, just warning you to consider taking the safe way!
The ESN doesn't matter so much if you're never going to go to the U.S. and use it, but a clean ESN is always better.
It really does suck that Verizon started doing the OTA code change thing. I'm glad I got mine and unlocked it before that started happening.
Yea but if the droid pro has a bad ESN means u can never get it activated, not even on Verizon in the US... I have seen some ways to get around it, but it doesnt really seem proven yet how reliable that is, e.g after an OTA update? Regardless, to have the least trouble getting it over here, recommendation should be to go for an activated w/ orignial verizon unlock code.
Thinking of selling mine
I may be getting a company phone so I might be selling mine.
I'm based in the UK.
Phone is unlocked and comes with extended battery, screen protectors, box etc, and is in EXCELLENT condition.
Asking £300 - meet in person preferred. Based in Birmingham, UK.
Please get in touch if you're interested.
Hi,
I have a Droid Pro in the UK on T-mobile and i find that although i get signal and 3G android only ever displays 1bar signal but under system prefs the signal is strong, apps sometimes say network error. over at the droid forums they have noticed this to be an issue with no fix.
Thanks

Please help with Note 4 purchase!

Hi guys,
Long time lurker, first time poster. I've been following several threads on the Note 4. IT will be my first android coming from iphone, and i've got a couple of questions:
1) I'm in Brazil, carrier Vivo, Band 7, 2600 MHZ. Can I get the SM-N910U instead of the SM-N910C which will be sold here next month? Will SM-N910U work just fine with my LTE network?
2) What online store has a good price for the phone and will send it fast? I'm also looking at a 60% import tax on my crappy country, so it has to be a store that I know will send the correct model.
Thanks!

60% import tax???? You better off getting an airplane and buy it in Europe
Will someone also please help me? I can't figure out what to do, I just want to buy the phone!
It seems the die hard tech guys really love the Exynos version. But it seems the battery life is questionable in Exynos, where it has been proven (so far) in Snapdragon. I haven't found any in-depth reviews on YouTube for example on the Exynos that claim outstanding battery, but I've found multiple for Snapdragon. The second issue is the camera, apparently there is a difference there as well, but I haven't found any direct comparisons.
It seems like the safer choice would be the Snapdragon. But, to further complicate things, it seems like Snapdragon is mainly a US-market part number. I live in South America, and our LTE frequencies are different. I am concerned about buying a carrier phone (Tmo, Verizon, AT&T) because (a) it might be locked and require jumping through hoops to get them to unlock it, (b) it is physically branded, (c) different carrier specific frequencies?
All of this is really a challenge! I simply want to give someone my money! I want a Note 4! But Samsung is making it extremely difficult for someone like me. I live in Ecuador and am on Claro/Movistar.
In the end, I cannot figure out what part number I should be trying to buy! I would rather just play it safe, which to me sounds like the Snapdragon. But the LTE frequencies are the concern at that point!
Please help me.

HTC One M9+ Owners

Hey guys,
I've been using my M9+ for quite a while now and its incredible, I have been using the CleanSlate Rom and its kernel. The picture quality is amazing and the 2k screen is beyond beautiful. The fingerprint scanner is very responsive. I am from the UK and its working perfectly for me here. The lady in the HTC Chat told me it wouldn't work here and no point buying it. But I knew it would work as the bands are mostly the same as the M9 and is covered by the networks in the UK.
Do you have the M9+?
If you don't have it will you be getting it?
Where do you live?
Whats your view of the phone?
Looking forward to your replies
HTC One M9+
I'm from India and I have been using M9+ for about a month now. Its not rooted (yet). Its an incredible device but one glitch I have noticed is that the camera app doent load sometimes. I'm running Android 5.0.2 with Sense 7.0. Also the device tends to heat quite a bit on moderate usage. Other than that it's a beast!
Do you have the M9+? - Yes
Where do you live? - Hungary/European Union
Whats your view of the phone?
- I'm pleased with the experience, I was turned down by the Camera reviews on the net, but I gotta tell, on the long run, I got used to how it works, and while I might have to take 2 pics instead of one because of the focus capabilities and lack of OIS, BUT those images that goes well are Superb.
- The heating is like it is supposed to be on a metal chassis
- Battery life is like average high end phones, I wish it was like on Sony's, but nothing worse than it was on my previous phone (OPO)
- I could live with a little bit less bazel because of the look of the phone, but the screen is gorgeous!!
- The price is a bit over the edge (especially if you have to pay import + VAT in EU from China like i had to, bah), but hopefully it will get cheaper, and more people can get this
Also as a developer, I'm pleased that HTC released the kernel sources relatively fast. Developing AOSP like ROMs for this phone is tho' a big no, MTK + HTC is double pain in the ass, so for now I'm skipping developing AOSP based device tree for it.
Do you have the M9+?
-- Yes
If you don't have it will you be getting it?
Where do you live?
-- Shanghai, China / Taiwan
Whats your view of the phone?
-- This is a pretty nice phone overall, and I love it, especially after breaking the chains and bondage the original China version laid. Thanks to @tbalden again!!
-- The Duo Camera could have been smoother though.
Do you have the M9+? YES, MY SISTER GOT IT FOR ME FROM ABU DHABI
If you don't have it will you be getting it? N/A
Where do you live? UK
Whats your view of the phone? VERY GOOD, WORTH WAITING FOR AS I UPGRADED FROM THE ONE M7
Do you have the M9+?
Yes, Bought it from HK as my M8 had a mishap.
If you don't have it will you be getting it?
N/A
Where do you live?
Sydney, Australia
Whats your view of the phone?
Nice phone. I have had it about 3 weeks, running CleanSlate Rom still getting used to M9+ compared to M8. Only real complaint so far with the phone design is the position of the power button - not to touch the button and turn on the screen. unnecessarily. Managing the battery life is continuous problem.
HI guys, just a quick question for those in UK - does the 4G work on Vodaphone & EE?
Thank you

I got this from a seller
Hello. this item doesn't supporting LTE 800MHz, can't work on Vodafone LTE network. only work on EE LTE. and remind you SIM 2 slot only supporting 2G network
so you can use the SIM slot 1 for the EE LTE network. and the SIM slot for the Vodafone 2G network
Allan
Have you tested it on Vodaphone mate, thanks

You mention the the device was E9+ (E9pw),not M9+ (M9pw).
If you want dual SIM devices, choose E9+ or ME (M9ew).
hahaa...... So many devices confused your users , hTC ........

I said E9+ because that what a seller in UK has, but he says it WILL not work on 4G in UK not seen any M9 E's for sale here - is it the same as the + or is it missing things (I ask because the + is missing) :/
EDIT:
Fpound one in Germany but it says:
Network Technology LTE
Band GSM 800/900/1800/1900 (Quadband) CDMA 800/1900 UMTS 850/1900/2100 LTE 1900
Vodaphone uses LTE 800Mhz so it wont work either :/
These phone companies REALLY need to get their acts together and simplify things for the markets, we are a global market now, the country divides are useless
Thanks for the input guys
UPDATE:
I bought the E9+
works great on EE 4G so I am happy
I saw a post on here somewhere about a dial in code #? to unlock 4G on SIM 2 but I cannot bloody find it :/
Do you have the M9+? Yes
Where do you live? Adelaide, Australia
Whats your view of the phone? It's sexy and love it expect the camera and battery life otherwise everything great.
hi guys, this is my first post so go easy. I'm wanting to buy the m9+ though im not sure if the 4g/the phone in general will work on o2 in the uk? can anyone clarify this for me? o2 use 800mhz as their band and i dont think the m9+ works with this.
however according to willmyphonework dot net when i select the m9+ it says it will work?
finally there are seemingly two m9+ models listed on there, the m9pw and the m9pt- will either of them work or should i just give up trying to get this?
cheers in advance!

Nexus 6P in Shanghai

It's early but I'm possibly relocating to Shanghai and currently have an AT&T phone I'm considering picking up at 6P but not sure my options in regards to sim cards and such over seas and there's no better place to ask than XDA. Thank you in advance for helping!
Hey, in case you still need info: I read that Huawei partnered with AT&T and China Telecom on the 6P, but you might want to double-check if there were separate releases. China Mobile and China Telecom often use a China-developed variant of network standards. In my case, I got China Mobile SIMs that stranded me on only EDGE networks, on my Nexus 7 2013 (LTE) tablet and an older Motorola Defy+ (3G/HSDPA). China Telecom even told me to go to China Unicom. You'll find most foreigners using China Unicom, partly because you can use your imported mobile no problem.
That said, if you buy a 6P in the Huawei store, or directly at one of the service providers, you'll of course have no problem.
I'm editing this to put the important thing I wrote at the top as well:
go to willmyphonework.net and select all types of nexus 6P (only 2 types) and all types of networks (only three types). You will see what sort of network coverage you get - I love that site so much.
I am by no means an expert in this area.
But I am using the 6P in Beijing and I am quite happy with my choice. However, I don't find visiting Phone stores etc easy - perhaps Shanghai will have more access to English speakers than Beijing... I have heard that some of my colleagues (non-tech) are now finding success with Xiaomi, one plus, and Huawei directly putting google services on their phones. I still end up assisting most who can't afford the iphone option and need google flashed onto their android devices.
2 things I have noted.
1. I was warned about it prior to buying, but did not fully understand. You need to follow a couple of processes to remove the problematic exclamation mark/wifi issue. You will have wifi, but it will be annoying each time to manually enter new networks each time until you do this.
2. If you root and flash new ROMS - unless you have internet access that has been redirected or vpn'ed (I don't know correct terminology, sorry) at the router level, you'll get stuck at the scanning for networks stage of device setup. You can't skip the network set up either. You just stare at a 'this will take 2 minutes' for eternity.... The fix is to find a network - like starbucks or some other western type of router set up. Then it allows you to skip the network initial set up.
I don't use China unicom, but that's because when I arrived in China 6 years ago, they sucked in terms of phone coverage. They are much better now apparently, but I have my china mobile number, and I don't really feel the need to change my set up.
If you have any worries about your phone working and which network to use, go to willmyphonework.net and select all types of nexus 6P (only 2 types) and all types of networks (only three types). You will see what sort of network coverage you get - I love that site so much.
Have fun in Shanghai! and you know ... Don't get Shanghaied
You will not get China Mobile and China Unicom LTE access with the US variant of N6P because of the lack of bands. With the international variant I have, you are free to roam the country and nearly all bands are covered. Sadly, no mainland China store will sell the N6P, unless you're willing to go to the chaotic imported phone market and seek for one - it's recommended that you get it through your US importers.
And yes, like said above, you need to root and do some (easy) steps to prevent the WiFi exclamation mark from showing up, otherwise your phone will refuse to automatically connect to WiFi even if the hotspot does have internet access.
Andy, thank you again for your advice and help in regards to the wifi problem.
USF guy, as for buying from taobao (online store) or markets, it might be fraught with difficulty for non-Chinese. My suggestion is to buy from as official as you can. Buy in HK is a good option.
The reason is because you just don't know what your getting from online sellers. For example, on my last travel to Guanzhou, I stumbled accross a phone market that was six blocks wide and long and sold every imaginable mobile phone internal and external. I very much doubt it is the only market of its kind in guangzhou and China. Simply, I don't think it would be too difficult to buy and make and sell counterfeit devices - and honestly, you might find it best to just pay the extra 400 rmb that gives you peace of mind.
You're very right about that kind of market - they might not sell fake devices these days, but the source and originality (i.e. not disassembled or no replaced parts) are questionable at best.
However, buying from HK will give you a charger that's unusable in mainland unless you purchase an adaptor separately. The only genuine option is from Taiwan, where an int'l variant is sold with mainland-compatible charger. If @USFguy is willing to arrange a trip there this would be a feasible solution. If not, then the only partially reliable one is to try and find one through US importers - at least they're more reliable than Taobao.
P.S. My own Taiwan N6P is bought on Taobao. There are many trusted importers out there, and for a device this new and this unpopular in China, there's no motivation for counterfeit.
Well, not exactly. There is one band working.
Tried Project Fi (using China Unicom) and China Mobile, most times you can still get LTE outside, otherwise, Edge you know.
I was in Shanghai last Christmas and purchased a pre-paid SIM card from China Mobile, it works fine. I also tested UniCom or China Telecom using my friends' sim card, Nexus 6P works fine with all of them: 4G LTE.
