Root? without bootloader unlock? - Moto G4 Play Questions & Answers

Any developers interested in creating a root for the Moto G4 Play? Especially the Verizon variant due to the fact it seems that the bootloader can't be unlocked?

There won't be one. They're considering it the same as the moto g4 Amazon prime exclusive version and neither Amazon nor moto will be releasing a bootloader unlock for the 1607.
As for the 1609, though, you could call their support line and request a bootloader unlock code, since the chart says nothing about the Verizon variant, so it's assumed that it counts as any other non-plus 4th generation moto g.

Yea I tried calling moto but they were not helpful and said they did not help with bootloader unlocks. Which is just absurd. I'm really at a loss cause I've tried everything available but I can't get the 1609 rooted or bootloader unlocked.:crying:

Yep, I went the same route too and thought I was getting somewhere. After 5 or 6 emails with support, they told me to call and ask for a bootloader unlock. I thought that meant it was going to happen, when really it was just them passing the buck and letting the phone support people tell me no.

May need the help of a some one experienced in cracking bootloader's and or rooting. I'll keep digging for a root solution and as soon as I get success I'll post here. If anyone else can help in the search or actually crack the code (as I like to say) and post it here, that would be great.

It's part of Lollipop, part of the security measures. And no, it won't mean that we can unlock our bootloaders. Unless Verizon and Motorla change their stance on unlocked bootloaders.

I had a feeling that's what it was. But we can always hope.
I tried to unlock it just for shiggles, and of course it didn't work. It even gives you a finished response, but alas, was still locked.

thats for device protection, a function like apple iphone lock,

http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/0...evice-protection-feature-and-how-do-i-use-it/
if you disable that option, you can flash things on the phone leaving the phone unlocked and open.
Here's a screenshot from mine. It's kind of strange to me that they're talking about security and locking features but it clearly says allows bootloader to be unlocked. But I'm skeptical, unlocking a bootloader in my experience has never been as simple as a flick of a toggle.

My Moto Maxx/Moto Turbo XT1225 has unlocked bootloader, as does the U.S. Moto Maxx XT1250, which is the device IDENTICAL to the Droid Turbo XT1254 (same FCC ID). The XT1250 runs just fine on Verizon with Verizon LTE SIM card (like a non- Verizon Nexus 6).
Speaking of which, the Motorola Nexus 6 has unlocked bootloader.
My point is, it's Verizon that is obsessed with locked down bootloaders, not Motorola.
Sorry, but

Sorry, I don't believe you.
Install TWRP and root and post screenshot. If your bootloader is unlocked, that will take 5 minutes.
Another reason I don't believe you is because if this were true it would be all over the Droid Turbo 2 forum and over there they are still complaining about locked bootloader and no root. So, you really don't know what you are talking about.
_____
The Moto X Force (KINZIE) is the International version of the Droid Turbo 2 (KINZIE). It does have unlock-able bootloader, and has TWRP and root. When the Droid Turbo 2 bootloader actually is unlocked TWRP and root for KINZIE will work on it, just like TWRP and root for QUARK works on the Droid Turbo XT1254 (Quark) with all the other Quarks.
And over there, they are still ONE forum, just like all Quarks were one forum until a couple of months ago. So, it's easy to keep track of what's happening with all Kinzies.

Sorry to bust your bubble, but that slider...yeah, it was on the Turbo when we got the 5.1 update. I could slide it to the "Unlock" position until I was blue in the face, but it had about a snowball's chance in hell of actually unlocking the bootloader. As @ChazzMatt suggested, try to flash TWRP and if you can, I'll eat my words. But the days of an easy unlock on VZW phones are long gone.
So, I just bought a Moto X Style.
And on the Developer options, also have the slide saying OEM Unlock.
It said that, meaning, during the process, the system/ tool will need the permission to unlock
and that slide allows that to happen

Not relevant whatsoever for the Verizon locked down bootloader Droid Turbo XT1254. I wish people wouldn't keep digging up old threads that have been refuted.
The only thing that works with the XT1254 is paid Sunshine fueled exploit. Other Quarks (XT1225/XT1250) can be unlocked via Motorola website for free.

At least we' re doing something,no matter what' s a result.
Verizon isn't going to let Motorola bl unlock these phones until they stop selling them like the X
But there is a new unlock exploit coming very soon that *will* work on the 8960/pro, so most of us will at least get 5.1 via cyanogenmod, it should breathe new life into these devices for at least the rest of 2016, maybe longer.
Maybe there is a chance to even get 6 via cyanogenmod eventually if the drivers can be ported from 5.1 ? Or is that an unrealistic expectation?
Let's hope this new 8960/ pro exploit is real for the sake of those who have not had the pleasure of running LP and MM on their machines. My MAXX and OG Moto X have been on LP for over a year now and it ran much better than KK other than the cell standby bug. I just flashed CM13 on this phone and it is even better. Testing out doze now, seems to be pretty good on the battery. This is a great phone, if it is bootloader unlocked!

root exists on the (verizon) mini/maxx/ultra (same phone internals) because of work done by crashxxl to bypass the bootloader and write over the rom via qload driver mode - basically he writes the changes needed for root and SU
I believe he figured it out by studying the developer edition of the device which is bl unlocked
it works quite well, we have root and xposed but wp=1 of course
laginimaineb's next announcement will open the device for everyone but I don't think he is releasing a proof of concept, at least not for this phone model, so if you are willing, we could probably really use your help when that happens
I'd be happy to send you a mini (to keep) if that will help motivate you

it's kitkat 4.4.4 - the only option right now unless you have a developer model or paid for sunshine so you can use cyanogenmod, etc.
SU6-7 rom was built December 2014 (sunshine cannot unlock this one)
SU4.21 rom was built June 2014 - sunshine CAN unlock this version but if anyone has accepted the OTA, it's too late because now the phone is SU6-7.3 and fuse blown
I can send you either SU4 or SU6 to play with

SU4 hasn't been available for a year now, maybe longer and you cannot downgrade these phones
verizon now ships all of them with SU6, so no sunshine, and verizon refuses to let motorola unlock the bootloader like they did with the X

RESOLVED: Root for Moto G5 Plus Amazon Edition

Question: Can I root the Moto G5 Plus Amazon Edition?
Answer: The Moto G5 Plus Amazon Edition is rootable via initroot so long as you have not updated the firmware. A bump here... I have the same question. Have things changed since November?
Bump again... Just wondering where this device stands as my mom needs a new device and I was looking at getting this one as none of the new / current Moto devices from Verizon have root methods... She uses the unlimited hotspot on her old droid turbo at the moment...
Bump..I would surely like to know also...
The answer is the same... No, it cannot be rooted EXCEPT if you happen to have an old one that was never updated, so December 2016 (?) security patch... I don't remember the exact date but it was late 2016 or really early 2017, then it was rootable by initroot.
Any update after that, or one that shipped after about May 2017, does not have an old enough version to root with initroot.
The bootloader is still not, and never will be, unlockable... Even if you purchased the ad removal, or later got your ads removed for free, this will not change.
I have unlocked the bootloader and successfully rooted this phone and am currently running ViperOS.

Amazon E4 Bootloader Unlock/Root?

Is there a way to root the amazon ads version of this phone or are we stuck in the same boat as the verizon version?
Bump
I've been reading up on the Moto G4 Play forums and I am wondering if initroot is possible with the Moto E4. I've run the sunshine APK and it says the pretests have passed and that temproot is needed to continue. So would initroot + sunshine = unlock? Or are sunshine and initroot patched. Do I have this all wrong or??? Would love some input, thanks.
EDIT: Appears SunShine doesn't support the E line of devices, may still work though...

Not a chance. Zero incentive for Amazon to change the status quo.
its been a few months since ive tried to unlock my amazon e4's bootloader, so i tried it again... IT WORKED. I bought this phone on Aug. 26, 2017...so not quite a year old, but i was able to unlock it following the instructions on motos website.

I am truly shocked! The cost/effort to maintain an exclusion list of device identifiers must have outweighed the business benefit (Amazon ecosystem lockin) assuming it was not an inadvertent disclosure. That leaves Verizon (XT1767) as the only major that can't be bootloader unlocked.
I noticed the price gap between 'prime' and 'standard' variants has narrowed of late - perhaps in recognition of revenue loss due to lack of lock screen ads (Amazon policy change) and/or more freedom to root and remove Amazon exclusive content - aka 'bloat'.
got excited, but sad to report it didn't work for me.
