RAM comparison for different Android versions - Honor 5X Guides, News, & Discussion

With every Android version, we expect them to be more feature rich and user friendly and also to deliver the better performances with more battery life but sometimes this may go the other way as with every Android version instead of lighter android experience, we get something which consumes more RAM and thus leaving lesser RAM/memory for user to utilize them for multitasking or heavy gaming.
In this post, I will be comparing the available RAM/free memory for the user with different android version. Being a user for multiple android versions, I have seen them all and experienced them all.
Android 2.3 (Gingerbread)- I used the android 2.3 version on my Samsung device which had only 256 MB RAM but still I was able to perform the tasks and still around 50-60 MB left as free memory. Yes that phone did not support any kind of heavy gaming of old times like even temple run and was able to perform the basic tasks like Facebook, WhatsApp etc.
Now let’s talk about only with respect to Honor phones and the widely used android version i.e. Kitkat, Lollipop ad Marshmallow.
Android 4.4 (Kitkat) (HONOR 4X) -This is still my favorite android version because this is feature rich android version yet provided optimal performance and better battery backup compared to other version. Out of 1.8 GB available for the user, when I boot the phone, I still get 1.36 GB of free RAM this being the highest I have noted so far in any 2 GB RAM phone and phone does pretty well in terms of performance, multitasking etc. I liked the RAM management on Kitkat so much that I even though of flashing the Kitkat ROM on my Honor 5x but unfortunately that is not avaialble as Hnor 5X was launched directly with Lollipop.

Android 5.0/5.1 (lollipop) (HONOR 5X)-This is feature rich and provide some additional feature over previous versions but when it comes to free available memory, it does lag behind the Kitkat version. I have seen the maximum free RAM up to 1.21 GB on boot and when I really compare this version for battery, it does pretty well but not as good as Kitkat
View attachment 3876212
Android 6.0/6.1 (Marshmallow) (HONOR 5X) - one of the major changes that Marshmallow brings in is Doze effect and battery optimization but when checked for the available RAM, its lags behind the Lollipop version. You read it right, Marshmallow free RAM is less than 1 GB on boot and sometimes phone lags while multi-tasking. (Still a beta version or stable one that is not fully optimize) but I have seen battery improved compared to Lollipop version

The battery improvements on the 5x are more because of EMUI 4 than MM

Hi
I´m kind of new here but still haven´t found an answer why my Nexus only shows 1097 RAM instad of 2000? Even tried different hardware checker and they all tell me the same. Have I made I bad flash?

The 2GB ram on the device must accommodate both the operating system and graphics Ram before any apps are loaded. So what you see is normal. This is no different for laptops. Also the 16 or 32 GB internal storage shows less after formatting and Android OS plus Google apps (Gapps) are installed. At least with the Nexus 10 you have much less bloatware compared to other Tablets (eg. Samsung).

Thanks for you answer 3Dsammy.
I understand that you use RAM when things are installed, But I still dont get it. When I was on stock it showed in settings 2 gb RAM. And now Hardware info (app) System RAM 1097?. Same with Clean sweeper.

Nexus 10 has never shown 2gb available, I've had it since launch and I believe the most I've ever seen was back on 4.2 was about 1400MB or so, and it has gone down from there on each update. You never get what they advertise on the box, every single one of my devices has less than whats advertised, my Note 3 is supposed to have 3gb available, but really its only 2.38 after its said and done..
1098 is normal on 4.4.2 for N10, I've attached a shot from mine ... I can only assume most of it is being reserved for the GPU and its super high resolution.

Hi,
As already stated here, just clearing a little the information for you .
The Nexus 10 has a huge screen resolution, therefore it requires a more powerful GPU, even having a pretty powerful graphic processors which is the MALI, it's not powerful enough for the 1600p screen, so they allocated ≈1GB to the graphic unit to prevent any possible issues.
Also, there are some apps running in background, so it takes some RAM too.
Hope this clarifies a little ,

Thank for your help:good:
I did notice that with slim kat 4.2.2 I have 1647 ram available and with 4.4.2 slim kat I had 1099.
so I thought that Kit Kat uses less RAM but I don't really see it with those comparisons.

Is there a way of having the 3GB of RAM?

I saw this phone has 2.5 GB of ram and i read that it is because it has the other part for the system but i have also a Nexus 6 and it runs smoother.
This phone doesn't have better multitasking and i think it is for the missing part of RAM memory.
Moto X Pure has 700MB of Android OS
Nexus 6 has 478MB...
I have tried CM13 and Stock and truepure.
No.
That is not...
Just no...
Our phones have 3gb Android pre allocates as much RAM as it can the best solutions to your issue is just load a custom ROM if you go with asop based 6.0.1 it will mostly make this phone a Nexus
One way to look at it...
Why does your GB variant (16, 32, 64) not actually have that much available storage? The system is allocated some of this storage. RAM is no different.
As far as system allocation differing between different phones, there are potentially several reasons. Remember that the MXPE is not pure vanilla with Moto having some of their stuff baked in. This can make the difference. Also differences in Android version can be a culprit along with differences in any custom ROMs.
Some is likely allocated for the GPU, also there is zram (think swap in RAM or compressed VM, much faster than disk r/w), etc...
yes , i am with stock rom and just rooted , there is 2.5gb ram and free available always around 350 to 500mb maximum available , it does restart apps in 5 or 6 apps multitasking

How much RAM are you using?

The biggest selling point of the OP5 for me was 8GB of RAM.
I know everyone says we'll never use that much, but according to the Memory settings, my average use is 4.7GB, and when I check running services in the dev options, my free RAM has been as low as 2.7GB free (using 5+ GB)
This tells me, for my uses (many tabs, lots of video calls and multitasking while on calls), 6GB is appropriate today, and 8GB future proofs me. for 1-2years.
I don't think 4GB is sufficient for a flagship Android phone, and that's why I didn't even consider phones like the Essential phone.
With about 9 apps open right now, I've used up 4.5 GB. Not too bad I suppose!

P10 Pro - RAM question (after Oreo)

Hi everyone
As you all probably know, the P10 Plus has 6GB of RAM.
Having looked at demo's instore, of the Plus model (running Nougat), it only shows 2.95 GB available, from the 6GB installed - with only Phone/Contacts running in the background.
(Personally I'm VERY dissapointed by that):crying:
QUESTION, after the Oreo update, how much RAM is available then?
2.87 with inly xda running. Why is that so important? Tge phone is lightning fast
free RAM is waste of RAM
what poiny of having big RAM when not fully utilized?

Back in die days of the 1st Galaxy S, I used to run out of RAM quickly.
Eversince then, RAM is important to me, especially in a flagship.
Utilization isn't always an option, hence lots of RAM is important (in my opinion) & is required.
in my opinion as i already use p10 plus and OP3T. both has around 3GB free RAM. Here i attached my device RAM. noted that i have many unclosed apps. i hope it help you. device not even fill sluggish although i open lots of apps

Great, that's what I'm looking for. I'll be uploading the photo's I took in-store to show what I mean.
Apparantly, one can use Huawei's HiSuite Windows program to restore your firmware after an update, in case Oreo doesn't play nicely.
I've attached some photo's to my post, have a look

Do I really need to get 4 GB RAM or will 3 GB RAM suffice for my usage?

I'm thinking of getting the Zenfone Max Pro M1. My usage is quite lighter than most people. I never install Shopping apps, Payment apps, gaming apps and social networking apps. I do all these things through the browser. I will have a selected few apps installed that includes ticketing app, live music app, parcel tracking app, internet radio app, banking and mail app. That's all.
The only requirement I need is that my browser should be as smooth and snappy after 2 years, as the first day. I often browse with desktop version of sites and those should be snappy and have almost zero lag after 2 years and after upgrading to Android Q.
Do I really need to shell out 2000 rs more and get the 4 GB/64 GB variant? Or will the 3GB/32GB be sufficiently fast even after upgrading to Android Q? Will Android Q be a resource hog and eat up all 3GB RAM, leaving no room for heavy browsing?

If you are lite user then you can go with 3gb variant. You can purchase 4gb variant in 3gb variant price in Flipkart Diwali sale which is starting from 1 November.

Thank you for your suggestion. That's a good idea to get 4 GB at the price of 3, but then the 3 GB will be even cheaper. I was wondering if getting 4 GB is even justified for my usage, because most of the RAM "might" remain unused. But I was unsure if newer Android OS es need at least 3 GB to even operate.

Do you think Android 10 (Q), which is promised for the Zenfone Max Pro M1, will be a huge resource hog that it'll need 3 GB RAM minimum to even run the OS?

The fact that android is getting more optimised and i am pretty happy with the ram management, 3gb seems good enough for me. But if you want more apps running in background then extra ram will be appreciated. Rest is your wish. 6gb certainly feels overkill
I suggest you'd get the 4GB version on diwali sales.. Its better to have more than to be stuck on less. Your usage would just be okay with 3GB but if you are planning to use it for a longer time..get the 4GB version..1GB extra ram would give an advantage on the apps that are always increasing the ram demand.
I have seen minor lags with 3GB version while using chrome and few other apps, but this never happened on 4GB and 6GB..currently using the 6GB version..
And if you would want a big price cut..get the superb or very good condition refurbished ones from 2Gud. Worth the price.. Even the good condition is just like new.. Good experience so far..returned 4 times for upgrades..wasn't satisfied till this 6GB version haha. You could also get just unboxed condition there
Get the 3 GB varient...
It wont lag...
More ram means more applications can run/stay open in the background and it should not affect the performance of your foreground app
4gb in diwali sale..
Future proof. 64gb double storage. Its not that costly

Max Pro M1 should get 2 major android updates P and Q
Edit: i missread, i taught u were saying "is it promised"
Go for 4gb. Not lower or higher.
just my 2 cents
Although 3GB is enough, 4GB will ensure better performance for long usage, because apps update usually get more and more resource hogging.
You can't browse too much tabs in desktop mode withous closing some background apps.
So 4GB or 6GB is better.
