Getting the Most Out of the Built-In Phone Manager App - Honor 8 Guides, News, & Discussion

Getting the Most Out of the Built-In Phone Manager App
You may have noticed the Phone Manager app on your Honor 8. If you've never bothered to mess with this app, I highly recommend it. There are a lot of ways that the app can help improve the way your phone operates. Here are some of the best ways to use this app.
System Optimization
The System Optimizer will scan your phone to find apps running in your memory. You can select individual apps to be cleared making your phone faster. You can make this process faster by whitelisting the apps that you don't want to be cleared. The next time you need to clear your cache, you can simply hit "clean" and all the apps that aren't on the whitelist will be closed.

Traffic Manager
Monitor the data used by each app to see which ones are using up the most of your 4G allowance. This section will also have the option to setup a portable Wi-Fi hotspot.
Harassment Filter
Harassment Filter is a very smart way to sort out all the incoming communication that you don't want. You can add phone numbers and contacts to the sms and call blacklist. Not only that but you can add keywords to be blocked as well. Any message sent to you with one of the blacklisted words will be blocked.
Head into the settings in the top right corner to adjust your notifications for the harassment filter. Your phone can be set to notify you every time a message or call is intercepted.
Notification center
The notification center gives you complete control over what apps are allowed to push notifications and where they're allowed to appear. Go to an app and toggle status bar, banner and lock screen to determine how the notifications for that app will show up. You can also assign "priority display" where a notification can interrupt whatever you're doing at the time.
App Lock
Set four digit passwords for specific apps. I've got a lock on my photos, hangouts and snapchat.
Protected Apps
When you turn your screen off, many apps are suspended to save battery time. When this happens, data will not push to these apps so many times you wont receive notifications from them. By default, many apps are already protected so they don't get suspended when the screen is off. Go into this menu to see what apps are on the list. Add or remove apps as you see fit.

There seems to be a much deeper depth in the phone manager than what i first expected. Thank you for the write-up. +1

Thank you for this in-depth explanation, much appreciated

Is there very similar app for the non Honor devices in playstore?

Multitasking the Android Way

My apologies if this is a repost but I came across this yesterday and thought people here might be interested. Anyone that has ever been confused by the way Android multitasks (let's be honest, we all have) should read this.

Interesting. And the author certainly has a cool last name.
Definitely a good read. Thanks.
I'm still TOTALLY confused between what a process vs service is and how everything works together. what's the difference between an app I just sent to the background vs its associated service or process? are they one and the same?

A process is any task that the CPU has to perform. For example, say you open a text file. That's a process. Once the file is opened, the process is done.
A service is a long-running task, often launched by a process. More specifically, services are A) for tasks need to run in the background, B) usually for long-periods of time (or indefinitely), and C) most importantly, independent of user-input. Instead, services usually respond to changes in the system (ie Battery Indicator, see below), or periodically checking the internet for something.
- For example, the Battery Indicator app, which puts the battery percentage in the status bar (see picture below). Whenever the battery changes in the system, the Battery Indicator service is alerted, and the percentage in the status bar is changed.
- Another example is the Google Talk service, which is running whether or not you launched the app. That's because it needs to stay open in case someone messages you.
Without services, nothing could run in the background for long periods of time. For example, without the Google Talk service, if you wanted to receive a message, you'd have to have the app open and in the foreground 24/7. Once you opened another app, you'd go offline. (coughiPhonecoughcough )
You can view your services in Settings -> Applications (on Sense UI anyway).

Very informative, thanks for that.
Excellent blog post! Thanks!
This would definitely seem to support the "No task killer" philosophy.
Good stuff to see...thanks

I wish I could agree with that but without some type of task manager, my N1 does not run smooth at all. =\

Notification Settings (FIX)

For some bizarre reason they have decided to omit Notification Settings in the Settings Menu. If you have an Android Wear watch and you want to change Notification Priorities for certain apps, this is a must, as well as many of the other Notification Settings.
Anyway the short term fix is to install an app called QuickShortcutMaker from the Play Store, then open it, search for com.android.settings.Settings$NotificationSettingsActivity and create a Shortcut for it.
There are others shortcuts that may be useful, another post has mentioned it to get rid of the 2nd sim icon. If I find any others, I'll let you know, and if anyone else finds other useful ones, please post.

Is that any solution to change Notification fonts and colour as I it's unusable to read Gmail Notification ?
Nope, only way to improve that is to play around with the Themes - try changing them using the app that is included called Themes.

I use honor 7 and the problem appeared notifications do not work, but I know half the solution, when you click on the box in the bottom of the screen Close all programs from the bottom up, do not close every program alone
many other things you can get with "QuickShortcutMaker" at your Honor 7 you will find here:

This is very confusing for typical android users, as this phone tries to save battery by closing all apps, which is a good thing for battery, but not for notifications, so it is very important for the apps that you want to receive notifications, you must protect them - go to Settings, Protected Apps, and turn on the ones you want to protect and stay alive.

Disable test message preview

Is there any way to turn off the preview of text message content on home screen and notification pull down? I don't want to see the content until i choose to open it? I would still like be notified that received a message. I just want to get rid of the preview.
I have the default messaging app installed and when I follow: Messaging App > Menu > Settings > Notifications, the only options are Block, Silent, and Priority. There are no additional options and I don't see anything related to the preview.
This would be a setting in the texting app itself, not a system setting. You can disable the "preview" in the texting app and just get the notification only.

Don't ya just love dumb noob posters. Nearly always with a whinge too.
Had to Google whinge! You must be one our neighbors across the pond? Condolences on the recent tragedy to our British compadres.
No silly questions. Never know how tech familiar someone is.

Haha.
Google indeed. A pity more didn't do that before expecting to be spoon-fed.
And yes, I'm in Liverpool, 30 miles from Manchester.
Your support is appreciated, thank you.
How to hide msg content of all apps on the notification bar
Hi
I want to hide all previews for any notification I get on on my notification bar, be it text, email or whatsapp etc. I just want to see which apps have a new notification and how many new notifications. Many of the apps on the LG G6 do not have a 'PREVIEW' setting so I can't disable that within the apps themselves.
Thank you

Have you tried "partially" swiping to expose the settings for the notification?

Still doesn't help
Thanks skyfox99 for the response. Unfortunately, that doesn't help because that controls the notifications in its entirety. So changing the settings that way controls if I get the notification and what sorts of notification settings I get it with. I just want to hide the content that comes with each notification. So that it just says for e.g.. Whatsapp 3 new msgs from xyz
If anyone can help with this, it would be greatly appreciated!

Unwanted popup

My phone is stock, no changes other than a few apps have been disabled.
I am getting an unwanted popup after I receive a call. It wants me to install Instagram, or another program. I have scanned with Malwarebytes but it finds no viruses.
Any help in getting rid of this appreciated. Please see the attachment.
Thanks.

Do you have ES File Explorer (think I see it in the background)? Try uninstalling that app and see if the ads persist. ES File Explorer may be presenting adverts and popups.
Thanks, but that did not work. Onto the next guess!
are you using a custom launcher? some of them provide ads on your ohone.. also try removing any apps that are known for showing popups
Chinese apps tend to have overlays like that, especially those cleaning/boosting apps. Get rid of those and see.
When it pops up, do you see anything more in the expanded notification bar? If yes, then press and hold on it and tap on "app info/detail". From there you can see which app is displaying these pop ups and disable notifications.
Thanks, Using ADW. Removed and still there.
Don't have any of those, but good guess.
No way to expand the notification nor any way to get more information. Talked to Motorola support and they had me clean the cache and that did nothing either.
Last case resort, start uninstalling apps one by one with the newest one first. When the pop ups stop, you've found the problem.

Prior to using the last resort method provided by riggerman, you can view how much data/wifi each app is using that is currently installed on your device. This can be done by navigating to network info in your settings. Then simply compare that data to which app is eating up your memory at the time of the pop up. A more in depth method would to use an app that is designed to gather in depth data on installed apps specifically for the user, such an app would be Android Addon Detector available in the Play Store (link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.denper.addonsdetector). I wont write up the way to do it cause I don't have that kind of time at the moment, and it'll do you good to teach yourself given the internet and the app FAQ and developers site because knowledge is power, and knowledge also helps to quickly deal with little piece of bull**** that land on your path in life, such as annoying popups
Removed 2 backup apps and seems to have gone away, thanks.
Had the same popup problem. I said STOP in response it has gone away.

Best Privacy Features on the OPPO Find X5 Pro

With Android's open-source nature, it is not difficult for an app to sneak something malicious into your phone, in an attempt to violate your privacy or steal your data. Smartphones contain some of the most sensitive personal data that we have, so it's important that all companies are constantly responding to privacy concerns. With the latest few releases of ColorOS, OPPO has made privacy a big priority. Now with the OPPO Find X5 Pro, you have more control than ever, over your privacy features.
The latest update for ColorOS is ColorOS 12.1, based on Android 12. Users can expect to find features like the Privacy Dashboard, microphone and camera indicators, and Smart notification hiding. These are some of the best privacy features that you should check out on the OPPO Find X5 Pro.
Smart Notification HidingSmart notification hiding is a smart feature that prevents the people around you from snooping into the notifications on your phone. Whenever you receive a notification on your lock screen, the contents of the notification will be hidden till the time the phone detects that it’s you who is looking at the phone. In simple terms, the phone scans for your face and displays the contents of the notifications only if the correct face is detected. If someone else’s face is detected, the phone will hide the notifications. It’s quite an effective and smart way to protect users’ privacy.

}
System ClonerOne stand-out feature that’s been around for a while on ColorOS is the system cloner. This feature creates a dual system or a secondary space on your phone that can be accessed with a separate password. You can even assign a different fingerprint to quickly get into the cloned space directly from the lock screen. This has been a good solution for anyone who leaves their phone unattended or often shares their phone with other people.
Private SafeOPPO developed Private Safe as an option for you to store your private files. When you add images, videos, audio, or other types of files to your private space, they will only be accessible via a password. This makes your files unavailable to applications that read your media.
Privacy DashboardStay informed about what apps are using your sensitive permission with Privacy Dashboard. At a glance, you can see what permission is being used the most in the past 24 hours. You can select a permission to see exactly which apps are using them, and at what times.
Camera and Microphone AccessThe worst privacy breach would likely involve an app accessing your camera and microphone with malicious intent. If you're someone that worries about your camera and mic being used by unknown parties, simply toggle them off in the privacy menu. This will disable these sensors across your system. If you try to use your camera, a notification will remind you to toggle your camera access back on before you can use it.
How have you been using the privacy features on your OPPO Find X5 Pro? Let me know in the comments.
