locked or unlocked BOOTLOADER?? - LG V20 Questions & Answers

I'm on T-moble I guess there getting this phone. There track record for locked bootloader are becoming more and more prevalent... Does anyone know???

Wish it would be, but highly doubt it'll be unlocked. Need to get hands on one...

The V10 and G5 both had unlocked bootloaders. I currently have both. But still cannot push any fastboot commands.
Not saying the V20 will be Unlocked but the chances are high.

I really don't have issues with my G5 other than after the latest 10D my fingerprint reader sleeps/doesn't respond as well as with the initial software. But the V20 apparantly to me is the G5 part 2. I can imagine what the G6 will be like.

LG V10 has been out a year now?
And there isn't a single good ROM for it.
How's that for track record.

The T-Mobile G5 only has a modded stock ROM...so its in the same boat.

New devices come out too frequently these days, there's not enogh time for rom to be cooked....

That's to bad about the roms here. I'm spoiled since there are so many roms, kernels, mods, etc. over in the Nexus forums...

Speaking of root, G5, V10 (6.X), and V521 (G Pad X 8.0) have fastboot flash/boot commands disabled. However, all we need is pre-rooted .tot or .dz file flashed with LGUP. @tungkick may help us on this. If so, I will get it and trade in my V10.

Yes my G5 is Rooted but I'm sure the V20 will get cracked the same way.

The T-Mobile V10 has a few Roms. Including CM.

Since I'm with Verizon, the chances of their V20 being able to be rooted or unlocked is pretty slim since they always lock their stuff down. But there is root on the Note 7, which is shocking.

It depends on which CPU.
If it was Samsung, it has better chance.
If it was Qualcomm, it's hard to tell.

Both the V20 and the Note 7 in the US are using the SD820.

I believe it is a true root method, not an engineering kernel with with the S7 root method. But since the Note 7 still has a locked bootloader, can't install TWRP or a Custom ROM.

It is only Root using leaked Sprint firmware. It is specific to that leaked firmware version so you can't upgrade to a new release unless a leaked version of that new release is leaked again. It is better than nothing but not a great option either.

Thats not true. Devs gave up on samsung and lg for the most part. If you buy a nexus or moto, even a oneplus the development is stellar.

I didn't go with the Note5 last year due to no memory card slot. Then looked at the Moto Z Force, but since it lacks a 3.5mm headphone jack, and since my Note 4 still takes better videos, I didn't go with it. So I waited on the Note 7, tried it out a few times in the stores, felt fragile to me with the glass back, and now with the battery issues, I decided to wait on the V20 or whatever else is coming out later this year.

XT1609 - No Root, Now What?

I'm satisfied with this phone for the most part. From what I've read so far, getting this phone rooted seems out of the question. Just what can you do, if anything, as far as customizing your phone like what's possible with Xposed (or even Gravitybox)? I'd prefer not flashing if the rom isn't rooted.
Any suggestions or answers?
Thanks!

Unfortunately for the xt1609 you can only use the stock rom as there is no root method for it. You cannot flash any custom roms or recoveries or use xposed.

There acually may be a way... if someone thinks hard enough about it, like with the Desire 526 Verizon model. If enough Devs and Senoir members get together, it can be done, nothing is impossible hardware wise

@classic757 statement was true when posted and remains so today. Finding a root solution (identifying a vulnerability and then developing a viable exploit to leverage it) has nothing to do with hardware unique to the G4P XT1609 varient. It is hard (increasingly unsucessful) work that fails to attract the critical mass needed to mount a coordinated effort. The puny market for this model almost guarantees no such effort will be undertaken.
If you truely want/need root consider a XT1607 which is bootloader unlockable and works fine with CDMA networks (specifically Verizon).

Actually, all you need is $100. The G4 Play unlocked xt1607 is on sale at B&H through tomorrow 6-23-17 for $100. If you want it now's a great time to purchase it.

DISCUSSION THREAD: Root for Snapdragon USA Variants of S8 and S8+ (G950U/G955U)

User "elliwigy" doesn't want non-pledge comments on their bounty thread. So I figured we could set up shop here and discuss all of our crazy root rumors. If anyone is wishing to pledge for root, please go here instead: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8+/how-to/bounty-thread-snapdragon-usa-variants-t3598271
Awesome thanks for creating this thread hopefully we will have root soon.
So I heard lasts years S7 snapdragon root wasn't that great is that true? I had the 935F which had roms, kernels, custom recovery etc.... Root was achieved on the snapdragon S7 in a different way... Did they get twrp and roms or just root?.... Definitely keeping my fingers crossed watching these threads

It had a bunch of overheating issues and i think some features may have been mia. the same exploit isn't available here, yet, because it relied on an early build of the 935u model, and there is no such build found for these phones, yet.

It used a special engineering kernel. That is purchased by certified Samsung repair shops. It was basically worthless. It made the phone run so poorly.

K... Thanks for clarifying.... So if by chance we do get root most likely a bigger challenge to unlock the bootloader/add custom recovery ... I guess the thing that pisses me off is the "U1" got lumped in with all the carrier "U" varients... Both have locked bootloader... I've always used exynos Galaxys on my GSM network never had connection issues... Mostly my fault cause I didn't get the international....Any recommendations for youtube ad blockers I've tried adclear but can't downgrade my youtube for some reason...

I actually think if we get either root or bootloader unlock we will get both. With how Samsung has the device locked down it is going to take someone finding a new vulnerability that allows to unlock the bootloader or root the device. But it could take a long time to find. Too many lines of code to even count.
Other option is the someone at Samsung releases the kernel source code or some sort of bootloader unlocking software. Right there is a group of debs working hard at it but they are not close. I'm rooting for them but I would not hold your breath.
Also most of the new phone will never get root anymore. LG, Motorola, Google, Samsung, HTC all are going to be completely locked down this year.

I've seen the term "temp root" going around. What is that exactly? I want to move a user app into my system folder to make it a system app, and I believe I need root to do this. Is there any way this is possible to do without a full root and bootloader unlocked?
No. "System" is read only.

Even funnier, I am doing a 24 month payment plan for my device, with 1 gig data (always on wifi, so it works for me) and my monthly bill is 26.42 lol.
With a unlocked bootloader, you can do an official CF Auto Root right now.

Do they physically touch the device and do it in front of you? Or does it come out of the box unlocked? I'm trying to see what I can dig up.
Edit. It seems the device came shipped with a eng bootloader. @elliwigy do you think we can use this to our advantage?

LG V20 Development Health

OKAY so
I'm very late to the party, everyone is already settled in and or leaving.
I'm wondering about how is the ROM/Recovery/Kernel development going for this phone? Is it still going? do aspiring developers and geniuses still work on this device or have they already moved on? Do we have daily-driver worthy AOSP ROM? Does anyone still maintain a stock custom ROM?
Basically, i'm about to get a V20 to replace my Z5 and I want to know how fun this phone to satisfy my flashingitis

Hopefully your device will come with an older security patch that will allow you to root. Shut off auto update in developer mode when you get it until your sure of what you've got. And don't install any system updates until also or you may lose the opportunity to root.

I honestly don't know how much development is "healthy", Manufacturers have released too many phones too quickly and devs switching to new devices.

They do for the unlocked US996, and the H918 can be unlocked with fastboot, but no flash command, so it is pretty useless. The H910 is the only carrier branded model that can still be rooted on the latest firmware version. Well, more to the point, it can be rolled back to a version that IS rootable because AT&T hasn't incremented ARB on it yet.

AH, so if i want to flash custom ROM on it, i will have to find US996 variant, or H910. Otherwise, not much we can do.

the official one released in my country, Indonesia, is the dual sim H990DS one, i should avoid that and find for second hand US996 variant instead.

Quad dac is a beast. A shame how little of support it got. It still compares to the new phones coming out now. Imo

I'm happy as long as i can get root, and flash different ROMs, I dont mind complicated method involving command lines. It reminds me of good ol' Desire HD days with S-OFF.
I guess development is not very lively but some people do work on interesting stuffs.
Good enough for me.
I guess this is one of the few phones the verizon version has a slight advantage. Almost all the KDZ files are available, and all downgradeable (for now). Personally I have bounced back and forth almost daily between full un-root, to root access, etc. Don't ask why, no idea.
Development is pretty minimal, which is a bit sad. But it seems to work great, rather than the ole days when development here on XDA basically was a must for a phone to function.

Is there really no root for Galaxy s8 950U snapdragon running Oreo build U2CRB9?

I own a galaxy s8 tmobile 950U which I just manually updated to Android 8 using Odin. Now I discover I cannot root this phone (yet?). Will I really have to downgrade back to Android 7 or is there a corner of the universe where someone has rooted oreo on s8 snapdragon 950U?

Chances are there won't be root for Oreo on snapdragon. Unless we get ENG files for Oreo, which so far is unlikely. There is a row though that has Xposed running without root, so there's that at least

Yeah Samsung have been doing this on a couple of the previous iteration of the devices, think from s6 or something. My advice and something I do personally as I have always ran modded phones for over 10 years and I plan to play around with is just do a little research, it's something that I find people tend to look over, not to take a poke at you or anything like that, I just see it happening a lot. But anyhoo, if you're looking for a phone which you can customize, having an unlockable bootloader is important and aslong as it has a snapdragon bootloader you more than likely will find working builds, I suppose the pixel is one route, or the one plus series of phones.
Thanks. I missed both s6and s7 . I went through 3 S5s lol. Liked the fact that I could swap batteries instead of having to plug it in to charge and the dimensions were more ergonomic for me. But even with the s5 I remember the Att version was not rootable.
Product managers think people will put up with the most personal gadget they own being turned into a cheesy invasive marketing vehicle. All that desperate bloatware and "personalization" settings turn what could be a beautiful product into something obnoxious.
Shame. I guess I'm done with Samung.

Never going to happen, you bought the wrong phone. Sell your snapdragon and buy an exynos.

These devices have signed bootloader they cannot be hacked if you dad was such a good programmer he would've told you the they use Sha 256 encryption 3 keys and totally unhackable by modern day PC's. You are just being rude with your comment or question as stated if you want a custom room or root on Oreo either by a device which is known to support root on Oreo or in this case ask your dad to hack it and become world famous

Why not try something that doesn't touch the bootloader at all?

Where and how do I start my rom installation process?

I have an LG V20, thats the sprint version. I'm on the March 1st 2018 security patch. Id like to install a custom rom to increase game performance, but i have no clue where to start. Can someone give me an idea what to look for? Any good roms?

You don't. Thank Sprint for making the LS997 the most locked down variant and unrootable past the very old version ZV7 with a negligible chance of ever becoming rootable again.
For all the other v20 variants, which are still rootable, there are several guides for different variants, just search xda for the thread for your variant.

It's probably legit but the key is in the first step, you have to unlock the bootloader. Currently there is no way to do that therefore it's a no go.

No, their guide on unlocking the bootloader is wrong and won't work on any v20. It's a joke, they took the generic steps and assumed they worked.
