Root Moto G4 Play - SuperSU prerequisites - Moto G4 Play Questions & Answers

Thanks to @acejavelin and his thread about rooting the G4: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4/how-to/how-to-root-g4-fix-bootable-attempted-t3417592
If you follow his steps rooting of the G4 Play is not a problem.
Thanks @acejavelin!

Ah, so this applies to all G devices of 2016. Great find, thank you!

Didn't work for me
TWRP don't boot.
When I try to enter to the Recovery option from the Fastboot Mode this appears:
Error: failed to load kernel
Boot up failed

This link served me well. You must download the firmware corresponding to your device - in this case the Moto g4 play - and install it all over again.

I also had problems with root, but by reading this post from @mx597turbo, following that four steps, I was able to solve my problem and get system-less root.
Cheers.

I finnaly rooted my G Play XT1603, i have used for frist the SuperSUFixer.zip after this i flashed the SuperSU Binary and kabummm rooted without bootloop.

Hello,
after installing TWRP, what's the difference between flashing SuperSU (like in the method linked in the first post) and Magisk? Just two different options or one is better for general use?

In vaguest sense the two are equivalent. Dive into details and there are notable differences. SuperSU has been around for several years and withstood the test of time. Magisk has some unique capabilities (eg: avoiding root detection) that appeals to certain communities. Not easy to switch between the two; choose your poison wisely.

Any working recovery yet (twrp, cwm, etc.)??

Tried twrp, but always says I don't have busybox and says loading, but never does, then on install recov, it DL's, but then comes up with an error: Flashing recovery was unsuccessful.
Gives partition as: /dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/recovery
No such partition on LG Leon LTE (h345, flashed from MPCS to T-Mob h345d, only way to get a working root)
Anyone else having this issue?
SOLVED: had to set "OEM Unlock" to enabled in Developer Options..., DUH!!!
This is off-topic, but as you wrote you've flashed a kdz from other variant: is it safe to try flashing different kdz'd just to try? I have a lot of possibilities, but i have only flashed the one from my country and exact same model and v10a. But it's impossible to root. Thanks!

I had to downgrade to an h345d kdz variant in order to get a working root. That worked, but it was a MPCS phone (on Tmo network) flashed to a Tmo kdz. Worked. I'd think if you Sbrick it, you could still re-flash with stock from recov., so not that big a deal.

Are you using the correct twrp? We've got a basic yellow guy which won't flash cm12 and then we've got a blue guy which does.
Why did you use kingroot though? There are better methods for attaining root on your phone.

Rooting LG Leon H34510e
I'm a newbie when it comes to rooting however I successfully rooted my H34510e using KingRoot. I verified root and BusyBox installation using Root Checker Basic. I installed TWRP but found that my device was not supported so, I uninstalled TWRO and installed CWM Rom Manager and that's where I'm at today. I'm looking for a custom rom but am not sure CWM is the right manager for my phone.

Take your phone, open your internet browser and go to http://www.kingroot.net/
Download the app, open it, follow the steps and you're root!
I have the same phone H340AR v10a ROM, from Uruguay.
Try that, it worked for me.
About TWRP I tried c50 version of TWRP Team, but it doesn't work.. You install the image and when reboot it shows the android robot opened up and nothing comes up.. I installed the TWRP using the "dd if=/dev/ bla bla bla" command..
Some help it wouldn't be bad.
Thanks!

Have you tried the manual systemless method?

Lol... I don't even have a G4, I currently have a G3, its the same way on that one, I just came here to check out the community when I saw how cheap they were on Amazon... I will do a quick tutorial making some basic assumptions about the G4 and it's similarity to other handsets
BTW, the systemless method is not new or exclusive to Moto... The info is out there if you know what to look for.

I know it isn't, but if you don't do systemless on the G4 it fails to boot. I'm seeing a lot of people saying to flash new firmware or a system partition. All you need to do is run your code in the TWRP terminal and reflash superSU and it boots fine.

will it erase all your data after rooting using this method?
i got twrp recovery, then use it for long time (or long enough to have filled so many files). if the root will erase all internal, i have to think about it. another question is about the OTA. can we get any OTA updates in the future after TWRP/rooting?

Quick question, did any of you on XT-1640 manage to safely root your phone?
You know, without losing wi-fi, data etc.? Which method did you use.

I was just trying to flash the stock rom. Had some glitches in my phone. While I was trying to flash via adb, couple of steps failed and then I was not able to boot my phone back.
Im sure that I'm using the latest version of ROM. However, it's the one before the latest security patch. However, the boot image and recovery image should remain the same.
Here's the version that I'm trying to flash.
XT1641-XT1643_6.0.1_MPJ24.139-13.1_cid50_subsidy-DEFAULT_CFC
No matter what I do now, I just cannot get my phone to boot in recovery mode or just boot normally.

LG G4 Root for Marshmallow on V20G. How to do it?

Hi!
I recently updated my LG G4 from V20A (I think) to V20G. My bootloader is unlocked and I had TWRP/root prior. Now, my TWRP and root seem to be gone. I've tried a number of things, but nothing seems to work. All root solutions seem to involve a pre-rooted kernel V20A. I presume I need V20G to match the software version - is that correct?
Where do I start?
Thank you! :good:

Which version of TWRP and SuperSU have you used?
I assume you updated to V20G with LGUp or some other tool by flashing a KDZ. You cannot root any MarshMallow version, you must downgrade to a Lollipop version and root it.

You're wrong. In MarshMallow, if you have bootloader unlock, you can flash a Custom Recovery and then, from this recovery install SuperSU. But you must use some lastest version of SuperSU (it can autopatch BOOT before install).

My bad then. I do not know why everybody kept saying that you cannot root a Marshmallow stock Rom. I guess they were talking about all G4s. It makes sense that unlocking the bootloader could allow writing a custom recovery.

Yes, that's what I understand as well - but there's so much conflicting information out there, and not a clear step-by-step guide on what to do. My bootloader is unlocked. How do I proceed? It seems that flashing TWRP only works by first loading it from fastboot and then flashing it - but I'm not sure. I'd really appreciate some guidance. Thank you! :good:

I've a LG G4 (H815), but I use TWRP Recovery for LG G4 T-Mobile USA (H811) because for some reason, the first don't let me boot with it. Anyway, with the smartphone ON:
Connect it to Computer
Copy to internal memory a SuperSU
Reboot in bootloader/fastboot mode:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
Boot with TWRP Recovery:
Code:
fastboot boot twrp-3.0.2-0-h811.img
From TWRP Recovery, accept to allow it make changes, and 'install' the SuperSU
Reboot smatphone normally, and that is all.

Hi!
If you're rooted, the OTA update does not work and won't install. I'm not sure if it works via LG Bridge - I think it won't wipe anything. My device was wiped because of incorrect TWRP installation. Good luck!

He should have used H815 one... Using H811 on H815 can make you a lot of problems like system partition might be on bootloader or so, so it's risky to do anything in recovery not designed for your specific model

Hello all!
I'm having problems with Windows 10 and all the programs to deal with my P880... Yesterday I tried
to unlock the bootloader on my new G4 H515 but didn't worked.
The original software was verizon (at least it looked like), I downgraded to lollipop (V10b and V10d, both euro open) but, using the LG official method to unlock the bootloader didn't worked.
In adb the first command didn't do nothing, the second one reboot the phone but only shows a guide and how to reboot the phone, when I tried to go for the third one nothing happens.
The device is detected only for a few seconds, even by the original LGMobile Support Tool, after force the detection by disconnecting and connecting the cable the phone reboot in software upgrade
and its not detected anymore...
Anyone have the same problems and/or any solution?
Install Win7 is not an option, processor is not supported by Win7.
Thank you

Solved!
Everytime we need to reboot the bootloader (or give another command in cmd) we need to uninstal the standard "kedacom usb device" driver and install manually the LG adb drivers.
BTW, was UNLOCKED running V20G-EUR-XX
I have an LG G4 815 which never rooted and I am not sure about bootloader (probably locked). I am on latest MM v20g. Is there anyway to root my phone so I can install apps require root? Without of course wiping my data?

I did factory reset my Moto G5 Plus, and now I am left with custom ROMs only. Where can I download the stock Motorola ROM for the Moto G5 Plus?

Thanks a ton. I will surely backup everything right after installing TWRP from now on.
I'm on stock ROM NPN25.137-15, rooted with TWRP installed. Can I just upgrade it to NPN25.137-35 by downloading the zip from above link and flash it under TWRP?

No Stock ROM can not be flashed via twrp, only the OTA zips can be flashed via stock Recovery. This is the link to the fastboot ROM.

As I mentioned above. Moreover you can flash UnSU and then root using Magisk. Magisk allows hiding root detection for Safetynet.

Assuming that you have set up adb/fastboot drivers, extract all the rom files to that folder and type in the commands mentioned here :

Is there a way to relock the bootloader?

I unlocked the bootlader and rooted the phone before giving it to my wife. During that whole process, fastboot had no problems recognizing the phone (obviously). Then my wife tried to update via the OTA which got her stuck in TWRP. I'd like to reflash the stock ROM, but the problem I have is I can't use fastboot to do commands line by line (as shown in the link above) since "fastboot devices" doesn't show my phone anymore. I was able to get her going on a custom ROM for now, but I'd like to put her back on the stock ROM so we won't encounter this problem again. I've reinstalled the Motorola driver several times, but no luck. ADB has no problems recognizing the phone when in recovery. One thing that happened recently was a big update to Windows 10, but I'm not sure if that is the reason for my fastboot issues.
I intend to give it a go on another computer once I get the phone again from the wife, but any advice until then would be appreciated.
Thanks. I've installed a custom ROM but im not happy with the results (specially the poor camera performace). Will this "undo" everything? I mean, stock apps, stock widgets, etc etc? (don't care if the bootloader stays unlocked and the warning moto message while booting). I know this may be a stupid question, but like Homer would say: "it's my first day"

Just a follow up to my previous post, I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the Motorola driver and ADB on the original computer, but for some reason it still won't "see" the phone in fastboot. I was able to install ADB/Fastboot and the Motorola driver on a separate computer (also Windows 10) to get fastboot to recognize the phone so I could issue commands to reinstall the stock firmware. I noticed, though, that the following commands FAILED when I entered them:
fastboot erase customize
fastboot erase clogo
I'm not sure what those were for, but the phone seems to be working fine on the stock firmware now.
I flashed the one in the retail folder and it says ret-EU in the settings so flash that one
