Redmi Note 3 Pro/Special Edition (MM ROM ONLY) - Unlock your bootloader in seconds! - Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hi guys! I found a way to unlock your bootloader unofficially in Marshmallow ROMs in seconds without the Mi Unlocking Tool and even without the Approval from XiaoMi and I want to share with all users here. This works fine with Redmi Note 3 Pro Snapdragon and Special Edition versions under Marshmallow ROM.

Latest Special Edition Global Stable. Works 100%.

I tried it 3 days ago with the Global Stable MIUI 7 and if I flash the modified bootloader my Kate does not boot anymore.

Are you sure it will work for redmi note 3 pro snapdragon (kenzo)? Since there is no official marshmallow rom for Kenzo. Or could you direct me to the marshmallow rom for Kenzo.

This is the same as the old method on Lollipop MIUI, replacing emmc_appsboot.mbn with a hacked copy and flashing. I wouldn't call it a new method.

SURELY friend! I post things only after test it. I have some devices here including 3 Kenzos and 2 Kates devices. Works great and some users already used it and works. Look:

Guys just follow the instructions, it works for 100%. I have done this already like three times with my "kate" device with global beta rom installed.

Can you all post the exactly version ROM version, with wich you archived this?

You can use latest Stable (V7.5.2.0.MHRMIDE) fastboot or latest Beta (6.9.1) fastboot ROMs.

Is it possible to just flash the modified bootloader via:
fastboot flash aboot emmc_appsboot.mbn
fastboot flash abootbak emmc_appsboot.mbn
Greetings
im0nKeY

Can I use this emmc_appsboot.mbn file from that MM thread to install miui_6.9.9 recovery zip in safe_twrp recovery (I know,I'll have to flash SuperSu and lazy flasher after I flashed the MM recovery rom and after first boot) ?

Hi @andersonaragao,
Can you please update your tutorial on the miui forum? I'm stuck in the middle.
First, the latest MI Flash Tool from the link you provided does not have an Advanced button. Also, it can't find the device after reboot edl; one has to boot the phone into fastboot manually for it to be recognized.
I downloaded the one you used from http://obigota.d.miui.com/tools/MiPhone20151028.exe, which works as described.
Further, the ROMs provided by on http://en.miui.com/download-301.html#449 are zip files in which I can't find the .bat, .mdn and .xml files needed to configure MiFlash. Please explain or provide a link where a proper ROM can be downloaded.
Hope you can help me out here!

To answer my own question: Fastboot ROM can be found here: http://en.miui.com/thread-328019-1-1.html

when I tried to flash, it got stuck on patching system image unconditionally. and nothing happens. any idea how to solve this? I have tried flashing with TWRP, ALKA, Cofface, still no luck

I've tried this guide loads of times now and I'm always stuck with "FAILED (remote: oem unlock is not allowed)".
All the info regarding the problem mention to boot into the system and turn on oem unlock in the developer options. But I can't boot with the modified emmc_appsboot.mbn I only get the Mi logo flashing. I didn't enabled before, as written in the guide.
Any ideas?

If you are using a newer version than DEV 6.11.3 It's not going to work as the bootloader lock control has changed,
downgread first and than procced with the unlocking proccess

Nice suggestion. But, will the bootloader stay unlocked if we update to the latest dev rom via twrp, once it is unlocked unofficially with dev 6.11.3 or an older version?

There are two ways,
1. Flashing Fastboot rom from mi forum will relock your Boot loader.
2. From the above mentioned tutorial, backup the original "fastboot flash aboot emmc_appsboot.mbn" file and it will relock the bootlader. optionally, you can try "fastboot oem lock" command as well.

On POST 3, I have given the link to the complete process and it works perfectly.
So, barely, its like, flashing 7.1.7 or 7.1.8 version with CHANGED MBN file. (MBN file is the main file which will allow unlocking from Fastboot command)
After flashing with changed MBN file, run the FASTBOOK OEM UNLOCK_GO command to unlock the file.
Then, u can check FASTBOOT OEM DEVICE-INFO to check the status. Then, flash other OS like CM12/13 or Qualcommn rom.
If u want MIUI os then, use FASTBOOT command to flash TWRP and reboot to TWRP. Then, download RECOVERY ZIP file and with WINZIP replace MBN and Changed BOOTLOADER (TWRP) file and then flash that file in TWRP. These steps are like an overview of the process, if u want more info, u can google it or check, MI forum
Hey guys I'm thinking of buying this phone the 32gb/3gb SD650 version to be specific and it's nice it's getting a custom roms just like the mtk version. How's the CM12/13 roms as for now overall? Stability, battery you know.. are these roms suitable for daily use? Btw now I have a K3 Note.
Custom ROMs are at very early stage and are not suitable for daily usage. As the kernel drivers are already out, we hope stable version will come soon... Qualcomm factory ROM is stable but feels slow...
Subbed and rated. Thanks for updating ^^
Direct Link to OTA for 7.2.3 is updated in first post. If anyone didnot get the OTA, download 190+MB zip file and put zip file in folder: /internalstorage/downloaded_rom/ Then, updater to update to new version of stock.

Nope, u ll not brick your phone. I have done that and it works flawlessly... I have unlocked bootloader and installed Qualcomm and CM12 roms and again flashed stock OTA via MI updater app. I didnt have any problem.
Although its not for novice users, in most of the cases, hardware bricking a phone is almost not possible, unless, u try to play directly with hardware. And, softbrick will easily be recoverable(Well u need a PC and drivers for sure)... its just like, when u r not able to run the OS in your phone, then, repair shop guy will just flash the stock rom and will give it back to you.... Just, thats what we are doing with MI updater. As mentioned earlier, this may not be for normal user...
Anyway, Thread 2 updated with new tutorial on How to flash OTAs without relocking your phone...

Mi Max Helium 3gb/64gb - first review (and ROM flash tips)

Hi,
guess this will be more of a review as it is hard to say which feature i like BEST:
Got my MAX 3gb/64gb (helium) delievered yesterday. Since it came with the 7.3 MIUI first thing i had to do was read up on how to install the MIUI8 China dev rom to the device. After a bit of fiddling and translating chinese / indian websites i came up with a workable solution, even with the bootloader locked. So since yesterday evening i got MIUI8 6.6.23 running on the device - weeded out some apps i did not understand (chinese) and installed Play Store.
So far i must say - this phone is glorious. MIUI8 is fast and seemingly stable, i did not come across any big bugs and there doesnt even seem to be the typical micro-stuttering. Im really happy i bought the phone and hoping there will be a multilanguage (i.e. german) MIUI8 for it. For now im perfectly good with the Dev Rom and english localisation.
Thanks Xiaomi!
To anybody interested - flashing the China Development ROM (MIUI 8 6.6.23) with the locked bootloader was not exactly easy, here is how to:
- get the rom image from here: http://en.miui.com/thread-299033-1-1.html (be sure to download the Mi Max Pro fastboot image - 1418mb)
- get MiFlash Beta from here: http://xiaomitips.com/download/new-miflash-beta-one-click-install-miui-fastboot-rom/
- extract tgz fastboot image - keep folder structure!
- enable developer options -> usb debugging in additional settings then turn off phone
- boot phone into EDL mode (phone off, press simultaneously vol+&vol- then connect usb cable)
- open miflash beta - there should be an entry with "id 1" and "device" something like "COM10" in the bottom table now - SEE ATTACHED SCREENSHOTS!
- select the folder where extracted image is located
- tick "clean all" in the bottom right
- hit flash
- enjoy.
First of all, thank you for sharing this. I went step by step (vol up and down didn't work for me, tried power and vol up and device didn't show up in fast boot, did vol down and power and it showed up) then I flashed the image and it successfully flashed, when the device booted it still showed the 7.4.16 global stable Rom the vendor installed : /, I did it again and the same thing, the rom didn't change. could you please help/?
Sorry, I followed the steps exactly as described and it worked out perfectly, thank you very much, its just that when I pressed vol + and - I didn't see anything on the screen so I thought it wasn't working, miui 8 is nice indeed, could you explain how you installed the play store, the one on the Mi store is crashing on me.
it's a little tricky but there is a thread on here that should get you started. you have to use the Google installer and then update some Google components before you restart your phone.

6.6.23 is older (june 23)
6.7.7 is the newest sofar (July 7)
I use the weekly multi rom on my MI Max since its better tuned with translations and the china apps that I don't use are removed

the process for installing the new Version does not change with the newer miui8 6.7.7 so you're good to go with the same Instructions from OP.
Meanwhile on my Max I have boot loader unlocked and root. Works flawlessly with the new MIUI weekly Releases.

Thanks a lot for you experience sharing,
I was wondering maybe you solved this: i can't get whatsapp to run on this rom, even with all permissions given, whatapps and skype cant access my contacts. I got my contacts on the system using the old google installer apk which worked wonders except now i can't get past the looking for backup screen in whatsapp.
If anyone has ideas pls let me know and in the meanwhile i will try to flash other roms to see if one works..

Thanks heaps for the tutorial about installing Google Play services
By the way, can this rom you're talking about be flashed following the instructions by original poster?
Do I need to flash in first place the rom from original poster (MIUI 8 6.6.23) and then flash your new one (MIUI 8 6.7.14)?
Or can I flash directly latest one?

I can't tell you for sure but i think you have to use the instructions from the muiu site if you want the lastest dev rom.
1- I used OP instructions and links to install muiu 8
2- updated to last china dev rom following muiu site instructions.
3- installed all gapps stuff
PS if you want to ROOT, do this between 2 and 3: (unlocked boot loader)
1-Download SuperSu to root Xiaomi Mi Max and copy it to your phone sd card from this site: http://www.stechguide.com/root-install-twrp-recovery-xiaomi-mi-max/
2-Download xiaomi twrp flasher and use it to flash from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-max/development/tool-xiaomi-twrp-flasher-mauronofrio-win-t3405207
3-Follow instructions from step 9 : http://www.stechguide.com/root-install-twrp-recovery-xiaomi-mi-max/

Man I already did it many weeks back.
You know I have gone tired of telling this simple fact to everyone, but no one understands that this is the easiest way to installa custom recovery. Even a modified boot image or any modded file can be flashed before flashing the ROM. Only that for APK's, the MD5 checksum is mandate.
So,looks like no need to unlock officially or unofficially then lol.
Spread this post like virus bro, people are trying so hard to unlock their phones officially and at the end of process unlocks unoffiially and gets so much problems because of xiaomi's worst policy of unlocking.
this is really easy and intelligent stuff!

You can flash ONLY official MIUI Stable/Dev ROM using Mi Flash Tool
Has anyone confirmed this?
based on http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Bootloader you need to unlock bootloader since the bootloader will verify (and boot) kernel and recovery.
If this does work, can anyone provide an explanation why?
Wow. Can I use this method for flashing this recovery on Snapdragon device? http://forum.xda-developers.com/red...wrp-install-twrp-flash-supersu-t3462448/page1

Hi @supercowz, could you please edit the original post?
I don't think official TWRP will work. From the guide, ZCX TWRP was used and you recommended Alka TWRP, which is cofface TWRP based. The common factor between these TWRP is that they are able to bypass dm-verity (built in in settings of ZCX TWRP, cofface based TWRP's flash cracked boot.img automatically). Also, it is important to boot to recovery after flashing the modified fastboot dev else it might cause bootloop. Also official TWRP might cause bootloop.
To all:
I'm still looking for the reason why this method might work. Based on concept, bootloader starts first before recovery so the bootloader will verify if correct recovery is installed before it boots the recovery. Only explanation I can think of is that MiFlash tool and/or fastboot DEV rom is able to fool bootloader that the flashed recovery is acceptable.
To those that have tried this, can you check if your bootloader is still locked? Thanks!

TUTORIAL - Installing CM13 on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro Special Edition 'Kate'

I recently bought myself a Redmi Note 3 Pro Special Edition (Kate) for its ability to run an official build of CM13 and, importantly, because Kate offers Band 20 support - a major advantage for UK usage.
As you may realise, getting CM13 onto Kate is somewhat more complex than getting it running on Kenzo. This is due to both the bootloader not being able to be unlocked officially and also because the Radios in Kate are different to those in Kenzo.
After figuring everything out over the weekend, I managed to flash the Official Nightly CM13 onto my Kate device & everything ran perfectly!
I wrote up the process in my Blog in quite a bit of detail, so feel free to have a read if you wish to install CM13 on your Kate edition of the Redmi Note 3.

My tutorial is very thorough - every step is taken into account, taking a phone as it would be out of the box running MIUI to having a fully working CM13 installed. If it wasn't complicated, I wouldn't have written a tutorial .
Thanks for the info though - the text and the ROM is all in Chinese but may be of use to someone.
Thank you for work. I will trying it till my kate comes. Doesn't band 20 and 8 work?

I don't believe is only in Chinese. Usually CM is multilanguage.

A very well written and comprehensive guide, thanks! I've been seeing so many support requests all over the place that i'm still a bit hesitant to flash CM13. Have you noticed /ANY/ issues with hardware support? Dual sim, cameras, FP-reader? Is there anything that works worse on CM than MIUI7 stable?
Thanks again for a good guide, subscribed to your blog too

The Special Edition (Kate) phone supports the following bands:
LTE B1/2/3/4/5/7/8/20/28 ( 2100/1900/ 1800/ 1700/ 850/ 2600/ 900/ 800/ 700MHz)
Kenzo does not support Bands 2, 20 and 28.

I must admit that the Note 3 is not my main phone - a Xiaomi Mi Max contains my primary SIM at the moment - so I have not tested it as much as I would like.
At this point (only having had the phone on CM13 for a few days) I have experienced one bug where I used the fingerprint sensor to unlock & the device unlocked, but to a black screen. Turning the screen off with the power button and then unlocking again with the fingerprint resolved this. I have only seen this once, but I did see it.
Generally, everything seems to work well - performance is great (smoother than MIUI) and both cameras and the fingerprint sensor work as expected. I haven't tried Dual SIM, or indeed a MicroSD card in the device, so I can't comment on this.
The bottom line is that it is a little too early for me to say whether I would use CM13 on the Note 3 if it was my primary phone. A safer bet is to use MIUI and set the phone up to turn off some of the oddities of MIUI. I posted about how I set up my phone here:
http://mikestechlife.blogspot.com/2016/10/guide-to-setting-up-xiaomi-miui-phone.html
On my main Mi Max I use Xiaomi.eu weekly on MIUI 8 with it set up as outlined above. CM13 only has partial supported on the Mi Max, so I don't want to go down this route with my Max.
That's quite the tutorial! Lots of good information there.
1. Xiaomi only support bootloader unlocking on Chinese Developer firmwares. There is NO Chinese firmware available for Kate - only Global ROMs. It is therefore impossible to officially unlock a Kate phone.

Not true, at least in my experience. I've officially unlocked my Kate using global dev MIUI8 v6.10.13. Followed these steps.. This particular MIUI release comes with a setting in the dev menu to check for unlocked bootloader and other things.
Now, I'm hoping I wasn't an exception, and officially unlocking Kate has now become just as easy for everyone.
Also, there's a ROM that's quite CM13-like and officially supports Kate and its radio. I come from a 2013 Moto G running CM13 nightlies and I don't miss CM13 after using this for a few days in my Kate. The experience is almost the same, and at least on my Kate, everything's running fine.
Too bad that Xiaomi is playing part lottery when making the phone, seems they can't be bothered to update their sources for all the part providers they're using. I guess we can't complain much when a phone of this caliber is so affordable.
I noticed that Xiaomi.eu have produced a build for Kate this week:

Cheers bud great tutorial.
I was using the latest Global Dev Rom and after the first boot loading TWRP it gave me a prompt for password. I could not access storage. Just fully wiped the device with TWRP/Advanced/Wipe Data and did the install. CM13 just booted on my device with a locked bootloader.
Biggie ups!
Does this work with cm 14 too?

There is a developer ROM for kate? Would this not work for official unlock?

Kate bootloader can be unlocked officially, I did it with mine on official global dev rom.

go to en.miui.com/unlock/ and apply to unlock
Use updater to flash global dev rom
Settings -> additional settings -> developer options
enable OEM unlocking
mi unlock status -> register phone
enable usb debugging (not sure if necessary)
reboot into fastboot mode
use mi unlock tool to unlock bootloader
last time i tried the "mi unlock status -> register phone" it faild (and i tried many times and did allot of restarts). i tried it on 6.10.13, what version did you use?
Thanks for the Tutorial. When i flashed the rom with Alka Recovery, i had the error message Encryption was interrupted and can't be completed. With the ZCX Recovery it starts normally.
Has anyone tried this with CM14 or a 7.0 rom?
